1st Bday: Planet Wise & Softbums

:: The Cloth Diaper Report ::

You may recall that we were contemplating switching to cloth a few months ago. Well, we never officially held our noses and jumped off the diving board. Cost was prohibitive - and timing - and then...there is the fact that the whole thing is overwhelming (so many choices + the need to buy different laundry detergent + the snafu about cleaning #2!).

1st Bday: Planet Wise & Softbums 1That said, I am hoping to reduce our use of diapers by pulling out the little potty soon - pretty quickly after my baby takes her first steps...which will be soon (Oh My!). I started my older daughter on the potty in the early walker stage as well - nothing pushy, just positive opportunities. She was pretty much potty trained by age two. We'll see how it turns out this time. I'll let her set the pace.

I'm also slowly adding to my cloth diaper collection because, eventually, there will be a baby #3 and - as they say - three's a charm, right?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Check out these two mom-owned companies that I recently discovered that will likely be of interest to my readers who use cloth diapers  -

1st Bday: Planet Wise & Softbums 2Planet Wise sells Diaper Pail Liners, Wet Bags, and Wet/Dry Bags in a variety of sizes:

The Diaper Pail Liners are sturdy, leakproof, reusable, and available in an assortment of bright and muted colors to match any room's decor.

The Wet/Dry Bags are two-compartment bags that allow you to transport your wet clothes/diapers in one pouch and your dry clothes/diapers in the other pouch. Perfect for swimmers, dancers, cloth diaper-ers, and potty training tots!

1st Bday: Planet Wise & Softbums 3Softbums is home of the "best-fitting one-size diaper of all time!" I haven't used enough cloth diapers to substantiate that claim, but I CAN say that these diapers are super soft and stretchy...and they appear to be a cinch to use. I especially appreciated the demonstration video on the website - that dad makes cloth diapering look like a piece of cake!

YOUR TURN: Do you cloth diaper or are you considering it?

WIN IT! One winner will receive a Diaper Pail Liner and Wet/Dry Bag from Planet Wise and an organic bamboo solo pack ($30.95-$32.95) from Softbums. To enter, leave any topic-related comment on this post prior to Tuesday, March 9th at 11:59 p.m. (Don’t forget to follow the rules…all generic comments like “Enter me!,” “Love it,” and “Cool stuff!” will be disqualified.).

  1. I'm definitely planning on it, once my newborn is about a month old and the stump has fallen off and I've exhausted the disposables that I've received as gifts. I'm all ready to go with the covers and diapers!

  2. I have been cloth diapering since my son was 4 months. I've never tried softbums but i'd love to and heart planetwise silenttributary(at)yahoo(dot)com

  3. I am expecting #3, I too kept thinking about switching but never did, I hope to at least try harder this time at giving cloth a chance!

  4. I really like the wet dry bags, they are a really good idea and would work for wet swimming costumes after swim lessons too!

  5. I just had a baby boy 4 weeks ago. I want to cloth diaper, but I'm afraid it will be too hard. This would help get me started!

  6. I tried it about 12 years ago and gave up pretty quickly. I have always used wash cloths as wipes though. I'd like to give it a go again since I now have twins in diapers.

  7. We have been cloth diapering our 1 year old since he was about a month old and we love it! We use mostly all-in-ones at daycare for simplicity's sake but at home and on the weekends, we use a BumGenius bamboo fitted with a cover because the bamboo is sooo soft. I'd love to try another bamboo diaper. We're big planet wise fans too - we currently use their pail liner in our Diaper Dekor at home and their travel wet bags in the diaper bag. Great products!!

  8. I just started using cloth diapers with my 6-month old. I think I will probably still use disposables for the convenience when I am on vacation or out for the entire day, but when we're around the house or going on short outings, cloth seem to be perfect! I'm excuted about this giveaway :-)

  9. My kids were babies a long time ago,and cloth diapers have come a long way since then, baby! I'd like to give these to my neighbors who are curious about cloth diapering, but hesitant about the set up expense.

  10. I have not yet tried cloth diapering, maybe winning this would push me to try cloth diapers. It would be nice eto be a little more environmental friendly and probbaly overall would be more cost effective.

  11. We recently started cloth diapering - but have not yet reached full-time status. We're still buying disposible diapers from Costco, but have a stash of almost a dozen built up (five all-in-ones and five fitteds with covers). I haven't been brave enough to use a cloth diaper at night yet, so we only use them during the day/evening while we're at home. I also purchased a dozen prefolds, but they are still too large/bulky for my four months/12 lb daughter. Cost is a huge factor for us, the start up is expensive - so we've only made a few small orders and I've been lucky enough to win a few diapers along the way.

  12. My sister is using cloth diapers on her daughter and has had a very good experience with them. If I were to win, I would give the items to her to expand her collection.

  13. I just recently started cloth diapering in the home and we truly are loving it. I am still working on building my stash as the diapers are quite expensive! We did get a wet bag a local baby boutique but it doesn't keep fresh...meaning, I can smell the poops and I am looking for a good wet bag/pail liner that will keep in the smell! I would LOVE to win this pail liner! Thanks for the chance to win!

  14. Cloth diapers have really come a long way since I was a baby -- they're all I ever use on my kid, too. I love how much better they are for the environment!

  15. I cloth diaper my 21 month old. We have tried lots of diffent cloth diaper and softbums is definately near the top for favorite. I could really use a wet bag as we don't have a good one now and I have not tried planet wise yt. I have done some potty training with my little guy. He shows lots of interest and loses it quickly. Thanks for hosting this giveaway and I will cross my fingers. Good luck with the potty training.

  16. The third time was a charm for us! The first two kids both used disposables, but for #3 I was determined to give cloth a fair try. I started when my daughter's cord fell off at 2wks old. she is now 12.5mos and I've never ever looked back. I love not buying disposables and I love love LOVE how CUTE cloth diapers are now days. Planet Wise wetbags are by far my favorite and I've been wanting to try a Softbums because the mama who makes them is local to me. Thanks for hosting this great giveaway. I do hope you give clot a chance some day! :)

  17. I've really enjoyed reading all the posts about successful cloth diapering, especially with no leaks. This is encouraging. We'd really like to cloth diaper our baby to be too, but I get overwhelmed with the choices. It would be nice to have a small trustworthy stash to start out with.

  18. I have 3 children and am pregnant with our 4th. We used disposables with our first three, but due to a much tighter budget and our growing efforts to do our part to help our environment, we've decided that we'll be using cloth diapers with this baby. Looking forward to the new adventure!! =)

  19. We use cloth diapers and overall we've had a good experience. It's slightly more work than disposables but when we travel and use disposables I feel sick throwing away diapers that are still going to be in landfills in 500 years!

  20. I have been curious about reusable diapers for quite some time now. I go thru insane amounts of diapers with twin newborns and a toddler, so thanks for the review!

  21. We've considered cloth diapering however we haven't built up the courage to give it a try. But thanks to mommy blogs it's given us the tools to give it a try!

  22. I am a cloth diapering mama who hasn't tried softbums yet! They keep tempting me though :) This giveaway would be great to win :)

  23. The more I think about it, the more I want to try it. for 1, it would sure save money in the long run... and for 2, cloth against my baby's skin must be more confortable than a disposable... right? Now just need to figure out which ones to try... oh the choices are endless!

  24. I have wanted to cloth diaper our first, but find it so hard to start. It's breaking a routine I've gotten into and am comfortable with, and trying something new. Seems so daunting, but I love the idea of cloth diapering. I'm still wanting to try it with #1, but if I dont get there, we're definitely giving it a go with #2!!

  25. With baby #3 on the way, I would love to win. I borrowed a diaper bag for baby #2 and I think I should have one of my own! We cloth diapered both kids and will do the same for this one on the way

  26. I'd love to cloth diaper when we have kids. My mom cloth diapered all 8 of us! She's pretty amazing. For the younger ones we did disposables at night.

  27. I would love to try cloth diapers for my second baby, I just dont know which ones to choose. I have seen G diapers and thought about trying them these are very similar and very cute!

  28. I cloth diapered my boys and all in ones are such a blessing for traveling or at home of course. I hope with future babies to have a few more.

  29. We just found out we're pregnant with #3 and cloth diapers is something I have been wanting to try this time around. This would be a great start!

  30. My sister has a wet bag and she says she never leaves the house without it; she things every new parent should have one.

  31. I adore G diapers with flushable inserts and plan on using them until my daughter is potty trained. My wet bag is from my son before her and has seen better days so I could really use a new one. Cloth diapers are really worth it and truly are not much that more work especially since I can't stand diaper genies and their foul smell. :)

  32. I am more than considering cloth diapers for the future. Currently don't have any in diapers. The wet bag would work wonders for those little accidents while out and about, spilled on clothes, peed in panties, muddy clothes, etc.

  33. It's never too late to switch to cloth! And it can help kids potty train earlier because they feel more than in disposables.

  34. I tried using some cloth diapers for my last son. I just found out that I'm pregnant again and I'd like to do mostly cloth this time around. There are so many good reasons to move away from disposables!

  35. We've been going back and forth between cloth and disposable too. Haven't made the switch yet for the same reasons...

  36. I'm trying to decide whether or not to cloth diaper. My sister is not, but my sister-in-law is. I'm so torn when I hear positive arguments on both sides.

  37. Well, technically I don't cloth diaper yet, because my little one is still just chillin' in my womb. But I do plan on CD'ing, and I'm starting to build my stash. I haven't bought any accessories yet, so I would surely put a liner and wet bag AND most definitely the Softbums to good use!

  38. We love cloth diapers here. At first, I wasn't real thrilled when my wife wanted to switch but I soon realized we were saving a lot of money and they weren't that bad.

  39. We cloth diaper our almost two year old son and it is super easy. I love all of the cloth diapering choices available, from all-in-ones to prefolds with wool covers. Always looking for opportunities to try a new brand. Planning on continuing to cloth diaper with future children and I highly recommend it to all families.

  40. I cloth diaper and like not having to run out to the store if/when you run out of papaer diapers or to get a good sale. I'm always looking for some new diapers to try.

  41. I have also been thinking about switching to cloth for a long time, but not having a washing machine is holding me back. I'm hoping we'll have one by the time baby #3 comes along.

  42. being pregnant with twins i am still considering using cloth diapers because i really think using cloth ones will be cheaper! this is great

  43. I dont have any children but one of my best friends is pregnant with her first - his name is Jack and we cant wait to meet him - I would love to win this and give it to her for a baby shower gift

  44. I'm always testing out new cloth diapers (I am an avid user) and those look great! I also think EC is worth looking into...it's not for everybody, but it sure does shorten the "potty training" phase.

  45. We considered it but like you said - cost was an issue at the time and I was concerned about how breathable the diapers would be. We live in a tropical climate and during the summer (which is now since we're also in the Southern hemisphere) it gets quite hot and humid. But I'd love to have some as back ups to try on my little one.

  46. We're a cloth diapering family. Have been for almost 5 years now. We've had two in cloth diapers at one time, twice. Now I'm a little sad because we only have one in diapers, because she's our last baby due to medical reasons. I would totally recommend cloth diapering to anyone. It's definitely NOT as scary as when our parents and grandparents were cloth diapering. We have also used cloth training pants twice and will when it comes that time again.

  47. I have been considering it with my first one and then with the second one but never actuallt done it and regret it. I would like to try a cloth diaper on my little one.

  48. We've been cloth diapering for over two years now -- since we came home from the hospital. My son's in cloth over night, when we go out, even on short trips away (two or three days). The only time we use disposables is when we've gone away for a week's vacation and had no access to laundry facilities. Honestly, laundering is really no big deal, and takes so little extra time or effort.

  49. I know the whole laundry and #2 thing is scary but it shouldn't be. We have been cloth diapering for about 9 months now and it is super easy - all of it. We use a natural laundry soap for washing and a diaper sprayer to take care of the poop. It very easily (I was able to hook it up in about 2 minutes)attaches to your toilet and you just spray the poop off. My sprayer broke and I was without it for a couple of weeks while I got the replacement part in and I tell you I would not be cloth diapering without my sprayer. It is a life saver.

  50. With our son I have been using disposables... and now that he started walking 2 months ago (at 9 months old)... I am getting ready to start suggesting potty training, slowly, to get him used to it... so probably no cloth for him. But with baby #2, when that time comes... I definately want to switch to cloth diapering.

  51. We use planet wise liners and LOVE them. I have tried others, but nothing is as good as they are. And the diapers look great, too... always looking for ways to add to my stash.

  52. I have been cloth diapering for 2 years (almost) and LOVE it! So many cute choices to make your child's booty adorable! :)

  53. We have been cloth diapering since bringing Audrey home from the hospital. But, I don't wash cloth diapers!!!
We have a diaper service. They come once a week to pick up the dirty diapers and leave us nice clean ones.
We buy the diaper covers (there are some CUTE ones out there!).
It costs about the same as disposables and it makes us feel a little more green plus a little better on baby.
I use a planet wise wet bag when we are out, it really holds all the wet and stuff! No leaks. It's also perfect during the summer for bringing home wet clothes from the beach or pool.
    would love another!

  54. I decided to cloth diaper with my first baby and I LOVE IT! It's definitely intimidating at first with all the options available but I found out quickly that the hardest part was figuring out which cute diapers to buy! After that, it's a cinch. I love it! And I love the way my Lil Man's bum looks so cute and cushy in his diapers.

  55. I'm done with having babies so we don't need to win this one... but I have to say I hope your second potty training adventure goes as well as your first did. Sugar is 2 1/2 and we're still struggling with the whole potty thing. I think though that maybe I'm starting to make progress... we'll see.

  56. I started cloth diapering when my little guy was about 2 months old, he's now 5 1/2 months old. I slowly began cloth diapering as I had no stash built up so it really was a good way to decide if it was for me and my family. I used disposables and cloth when I could. I now have a day's supply and I'm adding more and must say I'm addicted! The Softbums you were speaking about, I LOVE!!! We don't have issues with diaper rash or leaks and I think cloth contains messes better-jmo.
Good luck on your cd journey!
