It’s common to see book reviews, but I was recently thinking that it might be nice to see a magazine review every once in awhile. There are so many magazines out there to choose from – what’s a mama to do?
(Well, for starters – you could subscribe to American Baby and BabyTalk…for FREE. No need to consider the pros and cons, just sign up and you’ll receive free issues every month.)
For this review, I looked through the June, August, October, and December 2007 issues of Kiwi Magazine.
According to the website, “KIWI features the latest in everyday natural and organic style, geared towards helping moms and dads raise their families in the healthiest way possible.” And the magazine seems to accomplish that mission. Kiwi is a niche magazine and they’re focus is obvious – from the ads to the articles (recipes feature organic foods, ads spotlight healthy snacks, even the book reviews revolve around diversity and healthy living). I like that clarity.
The target audience appears to be families with toddlers to school age kids, although I was surprised to find a fair share of articles about infants and teens as well so it covers a wide spectrum.
My FAVORITE parts of the magazine are…drumroll, please…
(1) The Buzz: Oh, how I love to be “in the know.” In this section, Kiwi highlights brand new info, products, events, and announcements that relate to healthy parenting.
(2) Kiwi Bookcase: These are kids books that don’t feature same-old, same-old cartoon characters. There are beautiful books by lesser-known authors with amazing illustrations and important lessons.
(3) One-Page “tear-out” articles: I despise “run-on” magazine articles that spill over on to the next page. I want to be able to “tear-out” an article for my scrapbook or my “read later” folder…Kiwi offers plenty of these. I especially appreciate that the recipes are “one-column” recipes, which makes for easy cutting and moving to my recipe box.
If you’d love to “do” something right now as of result of this post (I’m a big fan of “action items”)…
