7 Things about me...and holidays

Ann from A Latte in the Morning recently tagged me and asked me to list 7 things about myself.

Because holidays have been on my mind lately (it seems like they're all scrunched together in the fall and winter!), I'm going to "change the rules" a bit and write 7 facts about me and holidays.

1. I am not a very "commercial" person...during the holidays or otherwise. Don't expect to see me at Target buying decor, accessories, doo-dads out of the $1 bin, etc. Instead, our home and our festivities are modest and more "homemade." We prefer to focus on our family, our friends, and creating memories (that don't necessarily involve money).

7 Things about me...and holidays 12. I am undecided about "traditions." Sometimes they're nice, but oftentimes they're overdone and it can get tiresome to do the same things year-after-year. I think I prefer doing new things...something fresh for each new year. For example, last year we rented a cabin in the mountains with two other couples and their kids over Thanksgiving. We didn't have turkey or stuffing or cranberry sauce, but that non-traditional way of celebrating was lovely. Something about the crisp air, the refreshment of being away, and the merriment of being with friends made it remarkable.

3. Halloween is a spooky holiday. I really don't care for it much. So much of the decor and so many of the costumes are depressing and disturbing. I wouldn't want my daughter around goblins, witches, devils, axe murderers, and skeletons any other time of the year. Why should October 31 be any different?

7 Things about me...and holidays 24. I think that "opening" stockings is more fun than opening big gifts on Christmas day. It's so fun to pull that big, decorated sock down from the fireplace and to take out the little things one-by-one...scrapbook stickers, chocolates, tangerines, and lipstick.

5. I have never understood the tradition of sending out blank Christmas cards that just have a solitary signature and that's all. It seems like such a waste of paper and resources. If there is a personal note, an update letter, or photos...I love that. But just a signature? Hmmm...

7 Things about me...and holidays 36. Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. The combination of somber remembrance and celebration is truly spectacular. I love the barbecuing, the national anthem, the fireworks, and wearing red, white, and blue. America is a wonderful place to live.

7. Holidays are so much more fun now that we have a child. Children just have a way of infusing everything with such joy and wonder, don't you think?

I'm tagging 7 people to "play along" (if they want to, that is). These are 7 people that I'd love to get to know better. Feel free to go with the holiday theme or to just write 7 facts about yourself (you can read the full "rules" here):

Everyone else: Feel free to chime in about my 7 facts or to share your own thoughts about holidays.

  1. Your quirks are always interesting to hear (or read as the case may be) Stephanie. I love that you cut straight to the point; I do that too!

Your Thanksgiving escape sounds tempting. The cooking and clean up is WAY overrated!

  2. Thanks for the tag. I'll do my best to figure out 7 things LOL

I can tell you that I had the WORST nights sleep last night with terrible, terrible nightmares and I blame halloween for that.

The people dressed up handing out candy, the sppoky decor...all of it made me feel so gross last night and it showed up in my dreams.

  3. I am totally with you on #4 and #5 (and of course #7). But I love tradition. I even carry out some of the traditions my mom started - like new pajamas for Christmas morning. To not have turkey on Thanksgiving?! Gasp!

  4. In 2006 we moved from Oregon to California, leaving both me and my wife's extended families behind. Now holidays are much more about personal family time for us, instead of big extended family get-togethers. Our new Thanksgiving tradition is to go to the beach!

  5. I am very much with you on #5. It's really lame to get cards like that each year.

I enjoy Halloween, the trick or treat part and dressing up but I hate all the gory and slutty costumes. Trying to make it a horrific or skanky holiday just upsets me.

  6. I would take stockings over big gifts anytime! My husband didn't quite understand the concept at first and put a big gift in my stocking our first year celebrating together and I had to explain to him that you just put little things in it. That is one tradition that I have continued on with our daughter from when I was little.

I also don't like the spookiness of Halloween either, but I do enjoy dressing my daughter up in cute costumes just for the fun of it :)

  7. Thanks! I'll have to put on my thinking cap.

We are probably 50/50 with the traditions. Some things are nice to do every year, but I agree -- it's great to do something new and not feel like you're in a rut or that the holiday will be ruined unless you do x.
