8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss

Last week, I was inspired by Michelle's post, entitled "My Favorite Romantic Movies." I liked her post so much, in fact, that I'm listing my eight picks from that genre this evening.

P.S. I was equally impressed by her movies that tried to be romantic but weren't list because romantic comedies actually aren't my favorite genre. Usually, I prefer action (not graphic or violent) or psychological thrillers (see disclaimer from action category).

That said, there are some romantic movies that I absolutely love to pieces and here they are in no particular order (except for Anne; Anne is definitely #1).

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 11. Anne of Green Gables/Anne of Avonlea

This is my favorite movie of all time. Anne -a spunky, dramatic, kind-hearted, and intelligent redhead - is wooed by "Gil" (Gilbert Blythe). I love every minute of these movies. If you haven't watched them, you need to watch them. Tonight.

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 22. Pride and Prejudice/Emma

Is it cheating if I put both of these movies on the same line? Jane Austen's stories are all the same (I'm now hiding from the virtual tomatoes that are being cast in my direction by Austen diehards), but the movies are likable just the same. The unconventional, intelligent peasant girl and the handsome, rich nobleman argue flirtatiously, passionately, and with firy decorum...and then fall in love.

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 33. A Walk to Remember

This may be a little juvenile, but I found the story to be sweet and tender and the romance was so pure. Plus, the soundtrack is memorable and marvelous. "There's a song that's inside of my soul. It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again..." I know you want to sing along...

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 44. Fools Rush In

The story doesn't start out all that well (two strangers meet in a bar, have a casual encounter, and she ends up pregnant), but the rest of the story plays out beautifully. I love this quote..."You are everything I never knew I always wanted. "

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 55. Enchanted

I can't help but add this new one in here. What a fun and fantastical story - don't you just love it when he sings to her at the end on the dance floor?

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 66. High School Musical

Does this really deserve to be here? Yes, it does. The music, the actors, the corny realism...perfectly orchestrated. I was entertained (so was my 10-year-old neighbor, but still...).

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 77. One Fine Day

Two working single parents trying their best to be good parents meet up on one fine day. My favorite scene? Towards the end - in the kitchen -her in that ratty t-shirt and spaghetti sauce - him leaning over: "What would you do if I kissed you right now?"

8 Romantic Movies You Don't Want to Miss 88. Just Like Heaven

This story is sort-of serious and bittersweet. I love how both people come to the table with their own "issues" and then work their way through them...to each other.

Lately, my husband and I are running "dry" on good movie options when we go to rent one. If you have suggestions in the romantic category or in any category, please do leave them in the "comments." If you're a blogger and you feel inspired, create your own recommended list and leave the link below. I'd love to stop by over at your place...

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting Anne of Green Gables as your number one romantic pick. This is also my all-time favorite book and movie. Infact, my husband took me to Prince Edward Island (where the book and movie take place) and proposed to me by "the lake of shining waters" and the dunes where you see Anne writing one of her stories. It was my fairytale come true. I just love your blog. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Oo, lots of great titles. I definitely have to second "Return to Me" as an all time favorite. Also love, "You've Got Mail" and adore "P&P" and "Anne", and all Austen movies, really. "Wild Hearts Can't be Broken" is a great flick from awhile back. We just finished watching BBC's "Our Mutual Friend" and it was very interesting & worthwhile. Some great family movies that we really like are "Secondhand Lions" and "Remember the Titans". If you enjoy classic comedies, Danny Kay movies are great, especially "The Court Jester".

  3. Amen to the Annes, etc. Great list!
I always think of "Return to Me"- one of my all time favorites. The story is very well written and the movie is full of beautiful performances (and a great soundtrack).
We also love "The Other Sister"- very sweet and suprising.
I agree with the "Serendipity" and "A Lot lLike Love" fans as well.

  4. Is there any other movie out there worthy of #1, doubtful. The only one that might fall into the romantic category that I love but haven't' seen in years is Princess Bride. As for other recommendations, we watch a lot of movies and they all run together in my head. We did just see Juno and I liked it, oh, and I surprised myself by liking 3:10 to Yuma.

  5. Gosh, great list. You've hit some of my favorites too (I like that you posted the A&E version of Pride and Prej). Here are a couple more goodies for you:

    * Sliding Doors (Great romance for both guys and girls. If you liked Just like heaven and A walk to remember, you'll love this one too. With gweneth paltrow)
    * Love Actually and The Holiday, fall into the same category for me. Good romances, definite chick flicks.
    * I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, but The Last Samurai was pretty good.
    * I've HEARD 'p.s. I love you' is good (but I haven't seen it yet)
    * Hitch is a great movie - although I haven't liked re-watching it as much. Making the pizza!
    * Stardust was pretty good. Sort of a romance, adventure, fantasy in one.
    * Action movies that my husband and I seem to be captivated by: All the bourne series, all the oceans movies, and Ronen.

    Happy movie watching!

  6. I love the Notebook! I also really liked A walk to remember, and just recently watched Enchanted I also really like that one.

  7. Steph - As a young girl I was quite obsessed with Anne of Green Gables (both EVERY book and the movies!) Also loved her Emily of New Moon Collection don't think that ever became a movie. I memorized a poem from the book when I was about 12 and I still know it by heart today. Love your list. Did you ever see Serendipity? That popped to my mind right away. Love the movie. Love the word. Love the meaning behind the word too.

  8. Of course, I love the Anne movies, P&P definitely, but I'd have to throw Sense and Sensibility in there instead of Emma. The scene at the end where the Emma Thompson character (trying to be vague so as not to give it away in case you haven't seen it) breaks down is priceless and captures one of my favorite emotions. My husband and I also love, love, love Fools Rush In; in fact, Isa is named after Salma's character! My favorite quote from that movie: "Love is a gift, not an obligation!"

As far as romantic movie recommendations, I'd have to second "Serendipity." We also like "Return To Me," sad in the beginning, but like "Fools Rush In" it is all about family and has a lot of heart (no pun intended!) Speaking of great family-based romantic comedies, I'd have to add "Moonstruck."

And now I've gone on so long, perhaps I should make my own list...

  9. I LOVE Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea too. My sisters and I would have movie marathons watching these - and the whole Avonlea series when I was growing up. Such good memories. They are the types of movies I can watch over and over.
I also love Enchanted and had my husband watch it too - he liked it. ;)
One of my favorites is Hitch. Have you seen this one? I think that it is funny and is also a little romantic.

  10. Don't tell him I told you but my hubby LOVES Fools Rush In. Hehe...

I love When Harry Met Sally - it is my all time favorite. I just watched 27 Dresses the other day and while I don't think it will go down as a favorite, it was better than most I've seen recently.

  11. You know I really liked Fools Rush In too, which kind of goes against my reasoning in the movies I didn't like list but I think it's because they try so darn hard to make things work which I can respect. Mistakes happen but an honest try to set it right goes a long way. Plus I thought she and her family were just a hoot.

  12. I could watch Fools Rush In a million times. Also, love Just Like Heaven. I would tend to agree with Allison, I like a lot of the classics. I love When Harry Met Sally!! But then again I haven't seen an adult movie in a long time. I should put that on my To Do List.

  13. Great list! I love Pride and Prejudice. Have you seen the recent remake? I enjoy that one as well.

I agree with mattie: The Notebook is wonderful. I'm a bit of sap, though...

This isn't romantic, but have you seen Charlie Wilson's War, yet? It's unbelievably good! Another juvenile romantic comedy is Juno--but from the reviews I've read you really can only enjoy it if you are under about 25 (which I am, so I LOVE it!).

I loved Enchanted! Probably way more than I should have, but it is just so cute.

What about some "classics:" When Harry Met Sally, While You were Sleeping, My Best Friends Wedding, Pretty Women? I love all of those...I'm sure I could go on. I'm a huge fan of romantic comedies!

  14. I love Anne! Love the movie and the memories that go with it...it's something Grandma and I used to watch together.

Definitely the Notebook. Also I'm not a big Ashton Kutcher fan but "A Lot Like Love" was really good in my opinion. How about "The Thorn Birds" for a way back choice...

Received P.S. I love you for mother's day, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. After seeing the comments, I can't wait!

  15. I recommend P.S. I Love You, as well! Oh, how I cried! My husband and I watched it together...we thought it was such a beautiful story.

I also recommend Miss Potter...Renee Zellwegger and Ewan Mcgregor are paired up again...and again, I cried. I did a paper on Beatrix Potter for my Children's Literature class in college...so, I loved the movie.

Don't forget The Notebook...again, more tissues! Such a fabulous love story...but sure to shed some tears.

    Enjoy!

  16. I love Girl with A Pearl Earring and I just rented P.S. I Love You; the movie itself is not all that spectacular but the concept....what a dreamboat! I'm also patiently waiting for The Other Boleyn Girl to come out on DVD.
My all time classic favorites that I can watch over and over (whilst eating bon bons I might add) are Audrey Hepburn flicks; Funny Face, **Roman Holiday** and of course Breakfast at Tiffany's.
    Great choices, yours

    ta ta!

  17. Have you ever seen 'Benny and Joon'? An atypical romantic comedy that I love to bits. Stars a very early Johnny Depp. Usually pretty cheap to buy or rent too. Made around 1994.

A hard to find but also great comedy is the small Canadian film 'The Wrong Guy'. I actually just tracked down and bought a copy. It stars Dave Foley and was made in 1997. Very funny in a quirky, dark or situational humor sort of way.

One that is out in theaters here right now is 'Run Fat Boy, Run' Don't be put off by the title, it's actually a really sweet movie. Stars Simon Pegg.

So there are three off the top of my head. All rather unusual and quirky, but you just may like them. :)
