Book Review: ABC’s of Breastfeeding

May 2, 2008 By Stephanie

Book Review: ABC's of Breastfeeding 1It’s unfortunate that “The ABC’s of Breastfeeding: Everything a Mom Needs to Know for a Happy Nursing Experience” (AMACOM, January 2008) ended up with such a bland title and ho-hum cover because this book is really a jewel. In this case, you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

Author Stacey Rubin provides an accurate and honest portrayal of breastfeeding, from preparing for it to weaning from it. As an experienced nurse and certified lactation consultant (and a mother of two), Rubin has witnessed and helped hundreds of women turn their nursing experience into a blissful one.

Rubin speaks with compassion and authority on everything from how to prepare for breastfeeding before your baby is born to building a healthy milk supply to how to continue breastfeeding after returning to work.

This is one of the top three nursing books I’ve read and I sincerely recommend it to new moms and moms-to-be.

In fact, a fantastic gift idea for a pregnant or “new mom” friend would be to make up a “breastfeeding basket” with:

  • a nursing camisole or pajama set
  • a Bebe au Lait nursing cover
  • a tube of Lansinoh Lanolin
  • a few healthy snack items, and
  • a copy of this book.

No matter what book you choose, I think it’s a good idea to have one or two breastfeeding books on-hand after you have a baby. Questions are bound to pop up and it’s good to have a trusted resource to turn to.

WIN IT! One winner will receive a copy of “The ABC’s of Breastfeeding: Everything a Mom Needs to Know for a Happy Nursing Experience” by Stacey Rubin. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post prior to Friday, May 9 at midnight (don’t forget to follow the rules). The winner will be announced and contacted on Saturday, May 10. * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.

*UPDATE* The winner is #11 jen g. Congratulations!

I’d love to have this resource. I initially struggled with breastfeeding because of eczema & my baby was a frequent feeder, but now I absolutely love it. I always have questions, though, and would appreciate a great book to turn to

I have inverted nipples and just couldn’t breastfeed my first. I am going to try everything possible to breastfeed my second. I would love to read this book!

I’m really thankful that breastfeeding for me wasn’t a “nightmare” as my sister-in-law described it to be when she had her kids (she told me this before my first child!). I think it’s important to provide lots of support for new moms as they are learning about the whole process with their newborns! This book would be a great gift!

I love your idea for a BF basket. I’d maybe add some nursing pads and some nursing mother’s tea. The best ones were from Lansinoh. Invaluable! : )

Oh if only a book would help me. lol I read every one under the sun. I’m going to pay for consulting with a LLC leader after the baby is born. I’ve been told that if you go in with your baby and get that one on one time witg a professional it will greatly help you. I’m hopeful that this time around will go better and last longer. (I don’t need to be entered, just wanted to add my comment on this topic.)

I’d even add a bottle of water to your “gift list” for a new mommy. Breastfeeding is more of a workout than you think sometimes!
Great giveaway! Thanks again for all you do with this blog!

okay, so obviously I’m catching up on your posts backwards :) I’m wondering if she has any info in this book on things like serious chronic low milk supply, and adoptive breastfeeding, or induced lactation? I’m prayerfully considering that for baby #2… I’d love to have a good read on breastfeeding, as I hope all will work out better with our next baby by birth.

Thanks for the recommendation. I love your book reviews!

My baby is due in June, so this would definitely get lots of use. I have one breastfeeding book, but more is always better! Thanks.

I’ve been nursing for months now but still come up with new questions every week. This looks like a great resource. Thanks for the chance to win!

I’d love this. My baby is 5 months old, but my best friend is due in July. This book would be perfect for her.
