Make-It-Yourself Dinner Franchises - Are they worth it?

Make-It-Yourself Dinner Franchises - Are they worth it? 1As a mom, I'm always on-the-lookout for ways to make easy, delicious, healthy meals...

So I've been thinking about trying one of the local dinner franchise establishments in my city: Simple Dinners, Dinner My Way, The Dinner A'fare, My Girlfriend's Kitchen, Dream Dinners, etc.

My research indicates that the cost per meal ends up being only $3-6 per person (not bad). It's a lot of money upfront, but it seems like a fantastic idea that will save us time and money in the end.

I'm looking for your feedback:

  1. Have you been to a make-it-yourself dinner franchise and, if so, which one?
  2. Was the establishment clean and sanitary? What was the environment like?
  3. How did the food taste?
  4. Were the serving "sizes" accurate?
  5. Was it worth the money?

Mom Blog Spotlight: Ode to Umbrella Moments 3If you're looking for a blog with a beautiful design, heartfelt writing, and updated content? Check out "Ode to Umbrella Moments."

It's the featured blog this week on Light Iris' "Popular with Moms" eNewsletter...and for good reason. I check it daily - and am often inspired and encouraged and humored by the "mom musings" that I find there.

Poll: Is it Cheaper to Purchase Baby Stuff Online or In-Store? 4Today I went baby shower shopping for a good friend of mine.

My original plan was to buy her gift online for the sake of convenience on both of our parts - I wouldn't have to venture out to Target or Babies-R-Us and she wouldn't have to worry about lugging her gift from the shower house to her house.

So, I added my items in my online shopping cart and went to check-out. I was shocked to see that the shipping & handling was HALF of the price of the item I had put in my basket. Yikes!

Needless to say, I emptied my shopping basket and went to Babies-R-Us in-person this morning instead.

My question to readers is this: Is it cheaper to shop for baby items online or in-store? If you shop online, do you have any tips to help a frugal mom?

Big-Enough, Babyproof Showers 5Mom Inventors, listen up!

Here's something I'd love for my house:

A shower that is big enough to bring my baby in with me - without her getting wet. Picture this: a little corner with a comfortable, rubbery seat and some appropriate playthings. That's for the times when I need to take a quick shower, but I don't have time to give the baby a bath too.

There would also be in option to convert that little seat into a baby tub and - you guessed it - there would be a little shower head that you could use to control the water flow. This would be for the times when I want both me and baby to freshen up.

Somebody, go invent this. Oh, and don't forget to give me the credit and a percentage of the profits if you make millions...

Promotion to Motherhood 7For those of you who don't know, I work from home for the local school district in my community. It's an amazing district - lots of competent, intelligent, and innovative people who are committed to helping students and families.

I have many "wow, I am so incredibly fortunate to be working with so many brilliant people in such a family-friendly environment" moments. Today was no exception.

All of the principals and superintendents in the district met today for a leadership meeting (a twice/month event). One of the principals is nine months pregnant and is planning to stay at home with her baby after the birth. We celebrated her impending birth by providing her with a gift certificate to a local spa for a massage - and the superintendent gave a little speech.

His speech left me speechless. If you know me personally, you know that I'm a huge fan of the superintendent. But today solidified my admiration. He didn't simply say "congratulations" or "we wish you well."

He said, "we're here to celebrate Heather's promotion [to motherhood]..."

Well-said.

1st Birthday Wishlist 8My little girl will be 1 in a month. I can't believe it.

It all seems so surreal. She was inside of me. Then, she arrived and turned out world upside down. And, now, she is a happy little "mover and shaker" - crawling, standing, giggling, babbling, winning our hearts every minute of every day.

As her birthday approaches, I thought I'd post an informal "wishlist" of items that I would love for her first birthday (this idea came from Ode to Umbrella Moments).

* Books (she loves them!)
* Gift Certificate to Snapfish.com (we take gobs of pictures on our digital camera and they need to be developed from time-to-time)
* Robeez shoes (or the Target brand or Preschoolians) - 12-18M size
* A bathing suit (no "baby bikinis", please; one-pieces preferred)
* Gift certificate for maid service (less time spent cleaning means more time with my little girl - the gift she'll appreciate most)
* Gift card to Simply Dinners (same as above - insert "cooking" in place of "cleaning")
* Scrapbooking supplies and albums in "little girl" themes and colors
