Campground Spotlight: Bull Run Regional Park Campground

Bull Run Regional Park Campground is tucked inside a massive 1,500-acre park in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia.

This pristine campground, which is steeped in history, allows you to be out in nature while also being conveniently located to area attractions in Fairfax County and in Washington DC.

Our family recently spent five nights in late June at the Bull Run Regional Park Campground in Centreville, VA - and we all agreed that we would return to this campground in a heartbeat!

Bull Run's campground is one of those rare gem of a campgrounds which make you feel like you are "away from it all" in a natural paradise - while also being close to restaurants, shopping centers, museums, and city amenities.

Travel With Kids: Fairfax County, Virginia 58

Some places you vacation once and then blow a kiss good-bye, knowing you will likely never return again. Other places, like Fairfax County in Northern Virginia, have more sticking power. In fact, when our family pulled away after a 5-night vacation in Fairfax County, we couldn't help but wish we had at least five MORE nights to spend in the area.

To put it simply, you won't be bored in Fairfax County. On the contrary, you'll be inspired, educated, entertained, and delighted.

Fairfax County is the perfect intersection of rich history and modern amenities. On the one hand, you are walking in the footsteps of some of our country's greatest leaders and, on the other hand, you experience the very best in innovation in architecture, science, technology, and the arts. Fairfax County also offers breathtaking views and over 400 parks, gardens, and reserves so that you can enjoy all that nature offers while also having access to hotels, restaurants, and cultural venues.

WEATHER IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA

GETTING TO AND AROUND FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA

Fairfax County is conveniently situated between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), which means you have flight options. During our visit, we experienced very little traffic, even during rush hour.

THINGS TO DO IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA

Smithsonian Air & Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center

Here's a fun trivia fact! Did you know that there are TWO Smithsonian National Air & Space Museums? You probably are most familiar with the one in Washington DC (as were we prior to this trip), but there is a second Air & Space Museum in Fairfax County. The biggest surprise of all is that it is MASSIVE and, in typical Smithsonian fashion, very well-done. In fact, we would probably argue that we enjoyed it MORE than the one in DC! This gem-of-a-Smithsonian offers interesting exhibits, an impressive number of aircraft on-display (300+), and an observation desk where you can hear LIVE audio from the airport within view. One of the best things about the Steven Udvar-Hazy Center is that it tends to be less crowded than its sister museum, which makes for a more pleasant and personalized experience.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • As is the case with all Smithsonian museums, admission to the Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center is free.
  • Parking is convenient and plentiful, accommodating even large trucks and buses.
  • Be sure to marvel over the awe-inspiring Discovery Space Shuttle (which is on-site at the museum).
  • There are LIVE Video Docents on large screens where you can interact and ask questions with scientists and aeronautical experts (they are at home in their living rooms or in their offices - ready to chat with you about the aircraft in front of you).
  • Although IMAX tickets are an added expense, we found that The Dream is Alive film added much context to our visit because we were able to learn more about how astronauts trained and lived aboard the Discovery.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • HOURS: 10:00am-5:30pm, daily
  • COST: Admission is free. Parking is $15.

Great Falls Park

DO go chasing waterfalls at Great Falls Park! At Great Falls, the Potomac River gradually builds up speed and force, cascading down steep rocks before eventually flowing into Chesapeake Bay.

Our family completed an easy, shady 1.5 mile riverside hike that began at Riverbend Park and linked us directly to the three lookout areas for an impressive view of the thundering waterfalls.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • George Washington was born in and spent most of his life near the Potomac. Additionally, many of the Civil War battles were fought alongside or near the Potomac.
  • If you park at Riverbend park and hike in to the falls (approximately 1.5 miles each way), you can park for free. If you park at Great Falls, you will need either a Great Falls annual pass or an America the Beautiful pass.
  • Remember that if you have a fourth grader in your family, you can get a free annual Every Kid in a Park pass (which grants you access into hundreds of parks, lands, and waters across the USA).

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • HOURS: 7:00am to 30 minutes after sunset, daily
  • COST: A vehicle permit is $20. Alternatively, you can purchase a Great Falls annual pass ($35/year) or an America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80/year).

George Washington's Mount Vernon

George Washington, the first President of the United States, lived at Mount Vernon for much of his childhood as well as his adulthood (when he wasn't away due to his presidency or the war). In fact, he even died in his home in December of 1799. Unsurprisingly due to the vast amount of rich history within its doors, Mount Vernon is the most visited historic home in the United States.

The 500-acre property, which is privately owned and operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, includes the stunning mansion (which is right off the Potomac River), restored gardens, outbuildings, and a working 1700s farm. You'll see the slave quarters, the icebox, the salt house, a massive 16-sided barn, and the tomb of George Washington, among other things. Costumed docents sometimes make an appearance as well, giving you a glimpse of what it may have been like to live in the mid to late 1700s.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Parking is free and plentiful. There are also spaces for RVs in the east parking lot and overflow parking lot.
  • Don't miss the air-conditioned Education Center and Museum, which are wonderfully executed and well worth a visit. Be sure to catch one of the showings of the 4D Revolutionary War Film (one of our highlights!), where your kids will be enchanted by flurrying snowflakes inside the theatre. The Be Washington interactive theatre was also a thoughtfully curated experience wherein you consult various advisors of Washington's day and then decide a course of action as if you were Washington himself. You then compare your decision with other players in the room.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • HOURS: April through October - 9:00am-5:00pm. November through March - 9:00am-4:00pm.
  • COST: Adult (ages 12+) $28, Youth (ages 6-11) $15, Child (ages birth to 5) FREE

Mosaic District

Mosaic District is an outdoor, upscale, picturesque shopping center with plentiful restaurants and adorable shops with appealing window displays. Enjoy this trendy and posh urban neighborhood where polo-clad men meander next to women and small children, who look like they are fresh out of Ralph Lauren catalogs.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • All garage parking and street parking at Mosaic District is free!
  • Young children will enjoy going up and down the escalator to Target.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • HOURS: Each shop/restaurant has its own hours.
  • COST: It's free to window shop and walk around. The shops and restaurants tend to be high-end.

Perch Putt at Capital One Center

Brand new at Capital One Center in 2022, you can now miniature golf on a rooftop (11 stories up!) at Perch Putt! I'm generally not one to spring at the chance to go miniature golfing, but I can unequivocally say that this is the best miniature golf experience our family has ever had. Imagine playing on a pristine course with the breeze in your hair, a drink in your hand, and sweeping views of the cityscape from atop a modern hotel!

Perch Putt is part of a larger area called The Perch, which is home to an amphitheater for live music, hip food trucks, and trendy seating under twinkling lights for a perfectly instagram-worthy experience. Well-dressed business people congregate here after work, but families are also more than welcome to enjoy the space. Even dogs are welcome at the rooftop dog park!

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Kids will love playing miniature golf and oversized chess, rocking back and forth on the porch swings, and dancing along to live music.
  • At night, check in at the airstream entrance of Perch Putt and ask to play with a neon glow-in-the-dark golf ball for added swankiness.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • COST: It's free to go up to The Perch. There is a fee for dining, drinks, and miniature golf.

DINING IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA

Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant

When you visit Mount Vernon, we highly recommend that you dine right on-property at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. The experience is beautifully thematic (the interior looks much like the Mount Vernon mansion) and the food is delicious (Kudos to the chef!). Our family ordered Szechuan Salmon, 10 oz Tea Brined Pork Chop, Tavern Cobb Salad, and Triple Decker Club Sandwich - and we all remarked at the tastiness of the dishes. By the end of the meal, our palettes were very satisfied and the meal remains our favorite dining out experience from the Virginia/DC area. Note, too, that the gluten-free desserts are exceptional. I'm still dreaming about the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • If you have a preschooler, order the Loaded Baked Potato as a main entree - creamy, cheesy goodness at exactly the right serving size!
  • To keep costs down, consider having dessert and coffee at Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant instead of a full meal. Did I mention the carrot cake was delicious?
  • Brunch is only offered on Saturdays and Sundays. Menu items are in the $10-$16 range with two children's menu options for $6.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • HOURS: Sunday (10:00am-5:00pm), Monday (11:00am-5:00pm), Tuesday-Friday (11:00am-8:00pm), Saturday (10:00am-8:00pm)
  • COST: $10-$30 per entree

Travel With Kids: Silver Dollar City 162

Located in southwestern Missouri in the bustling city of Branson, Silver Dollar City is a 100-acre amusement park with 12 stage venues, 40 rides and attractions, 18 restaurants, 60 shops, and 100 resident craftsmen.

The park's theme is centered around the 1880's, which was a period of economic growth and prosperity in many parts of the world, especially Europe and the Americas. Many modern cities emerged during this time as did the construction of the first skyscraper. In fact, brush off your history books and you'll see that this decade was a part of the Gilded Age (1874–1907) in the United States and the Victorian Era in Britain. The feats accomplished during the 1880s were truly remarkable and changed the world forever - including the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower, the first movie, and the first automobile. If you were to travel back in time to the 1880's, you might meet Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, Robert Loius Stevenson, Mark Twain, Fyoder Dostoevsky, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, Wyatt Earp, Buffalo Bill, or Billy the Kid.

Prior to our visit this summer, we had never even heard of Silver Dollar City and we were pleasantly surprised when we walked through the entrance gates to find a clean, beautifully decorated, expansive, and thematically immersive experience. Costumed employees were friendly and well-trained. The park's designers and architects especially deserve kudos for their careful selection of fonts, posters, and decorative elements that can be admired throughout the park.

TICKETS AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Theme park tickets start at $74 per person per day for ages 12-64. There are ticket discounts for ages 4-11 and ages 65+. Young children (ages 3 and under) are free.

If you are visiting when the weather is hot and are able to spend several days in the area, you can purchase a ticket bundle that includes tickets to the adjacent White Water park.

Since our family only had one day in area, we were not able to visit White Water so this guide will focus exclusively on Silver Dollar City.

PARKING AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Parking is close, convenient, free, and plentiful at Silver Dollar City (compare that to Disney parks, which charge $25-$50 per day). You will park in a sprawling lot and then hop on a complimentary tram that will pick you up and take you to the admission gate.

Although there are two paid parking options (Preferred and Premier), we did not find this to be a needed amenity since trams ran continuously and the park was nearby. In fact, at the end of a full day in the theme park, we ended up just walking to our cars instead of taking the tram - an easy walk (even for our 5-year-old) wherein we could see our vehicle from the exit gate of the theme park.

ROLLER COASTERS & DARING RIDES AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Our entire family commented that we were surprised by the quality, variety, and number of rides at Silver Dollar City. We have been to Disneyland, DisneyWorld, HersheyPark, Universal Studios, Knott's Berry Farm, SeaWorld, and LegoLand - and Silver Dollar City held its own!

The daredevils in our group rode Time Traveler on-repeat. This $26-million, record-breaking ride features three inversions, a 95-foot vertical loop, and two launches at 50+ miles per hour. Riders who have a need for speed will also want to try Outlaw Run, PowderKeg (which has an explosive start), The Giant Barn Swing, Thunderation, Electro Spin, and WildFire.

KIDS & FAMILY RIDES AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Don't worry if you have little ones with you! There are MANY attraction options for young children.

Our 5-year-old had a ball on Hugo & Mary's Carousel, Ladybugs, American Plunge (a log ride), Elephant March, Fire-In-The-Hole (an inferior Pirates of the Caribbean-ish experience, but in cars), Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train, Tom & Huck's RiverBlast, FireHouse Play Place, Grandfather's Mansion, Half Dollar Holler, Mystic River Falls (an 8-person whitewater rafting ride that is always a favorite for groups, families, and teens), and - his favorite - Grand Exposition Coaster!

If your group isn't prone to motion sickness, you will find a whole host of other options for your child as well - Fire Spotter, Fireman's Flyers, Happy Frogs, Lucky's Dizzy Dogs, and Royal Tea Party, among others.

Since our party had a wide range of ages (5 to 44) and varying levels of tolerance for spinning, high-flying rides, we were grateful that there were a number of rides and experiences that could be enjoyed by all.

While we are on the topic, it is worth noting that there is a good mix of rides for family, kids, and older teens/adults so that every member of your party can enjoy the day.

DINING AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Dining at Silver Dollar City appeared to be standard theme park fare at standard theme park prices. We had lunch at Rivertown Smokehouse, a barbecue joint featuring smoked chicken, beef, and ribs. One fantastic part of Silver Dollar City is that you can order and then find seats (often indoors or in the shade!).

From perusing the menus, I noted that on our next trip to Silver Dollar City, I think I'd be interested in trying the jumbo corn dogs on Hugo's Hill Street or the Calico Potato & Sausage Skillet at Hatfield's Tater Patch.

Those with hearty appetites may enjoy the all-you-can-eat lunch or dinner buffet at Molly's Mill Restaurant. An all-you-can-eat Ozark Mountain Breakfast Buffet is also available from 8:30am-11:00am seasonally at Molly's from March through October.

SHOWS AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Who knew that Silver Dollar City was a mecca for live music and performances? Be sure to check the schedule prior to your visit to allot some time for concerts, magic shows, and circus performances.

HISTORY AT SILVER DOLLAR CITY

In hindsight, we wish we would have had time to wander through the various historical buildings and replicas at Silver Dollar City - including Birdle's Cabin, McHaffie's Homestead (which features live music!), Oak Trail School, and Wilderness Church (check the schedule for the Hymn Singalong).

SILVER DOLLAR CITY WITH A BABY

Silver Dollar City is one of the most baby-friendly theme parks in the USA! Since I nursed babies for a total of 8+ years, I am always on the lookout for companies that offer amenities and quiet spaces where parents can care for their little ones. Silver Dollar City is a stand-out in the number of clean, comfortable spaces they offer in this category. If you need to change a diaper, breastfeed, or spend some quiet time with your baby, there are four nursing stations inside Silver Dollar City!

WHAT TO WEAR TO SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Wear breathable, quick-dry clothing since you may get splashed (or soaked!) on Mystic River Falls, American Plunge, and Tom & Huck's River Blast. Athletic shorts and a t-shirt or long-sleeved sun shirt are a good pick for a summer day.

When you reach for your shoes, opt for comfortable, supportive footwear - preferably shoes that are waterproof, mesh, or quick dry.

Last, but not least, don't forget to slather on the sunscreen. Note, though, that the planners of Silver Dollar City deserve an award for the amount of shade throughout the park. Large trees are thoughtfully planted to ensure that guests don't have to fight for shady spots.

TIPS FOR VISITING SILVER DOLLAR CITY

Want to maximize your experience at Silver Dollar City? Here are seven tips to help you make wonderful memories with family & friends:

  • Make note of the closing time. Silver Dollar City closes early (6:00pm or 7:00pm) during some parts of the year, which will make for a more time-crunched experience. If you have flexibility in your travel dates, select a date with a later closing time (9:00pm, 10:00pm, or Midnight).
  • Arrive early. Line rides are typically the shortest right at park opening and in the early morning.
  • Buy your tickets in advance to bypass lines on the day of your visit.
  • Download the Silver Dollar City app to keep track of your location, get the lowdown on ride wait times, and see the show schedule.
  • Request water/ice at any restaurant. Don't forget to hydrate! You can request water and ice at any dining venue.
  • Beware of motion sickness at Silver Dollar City. Some of the rides at Silver Dollar City spin, twirl, or are dizzying due to other factors. Follow the basic rules to prevent nausea if you are prone to motion sickness: (1) Eat enough, but not too much. (2) Drink plenty of water the night before. (3) Know your limit and take a break.
  • Beware of motion sickness around Branson and in southern Missouri. Roads are very windy around Branson and in the surrounding area. See above tips, plus pack vomit bags, mints, cinnamon bears, or potato chips for the car ride.

What to Pack for Summer Vacation: Games, Activities, & Gear 262

We've been going on r*e*a*l*l*y long road trips since our kids were babies. In fact, we once sold or gave away almost everything we owned and went around the USA for a year by RV with a 2-year-old and 4-year-old. True story.

Now that our kids are older, we still love taking road trips both near and far. When we travel, we try our best to be intentional about our time in the car and at our destination(s). We prefer tech-free entertainment, whenever possible - audiobooks, drawing, journaling, reading, board games, bike riding, hiking, visiting national parks and local sites of interest, etc.

Below I've compiled a list of activities, games, and gear to help keep your kids engaged, learning, and having fun - whether you are spending time at home or going abroad this summer. Enjoy!

GAMES, TOYS, & ACTIVITIES

BOOKS & TOYS BY AMERICAN GIRL

I distinctly remember poring over the pages of the American Girl Magazine and reading through stacks of AG historical novels when I was about eleven years old. Almost 30 years later, American Girl still produces excellent resources for young girls (particularly in the 7 to 12 age range). For time at home, check out the new doll clothes and accessory sets. For road trips or airplane adventures, pick up a few of their activity books or guided journals.

16-INCH PRO BELT-DRIVEN KIDS BIKE BY BELSIZE

What to Pack for Summer Vacation: Games, Activities, & Gear 277

If you are a bicyclist, you know how important it is to choose your bicycle with care. The same loving-care ought to go into a search for a bike for your child...and we've done the legwork for you! Take a look at the specs on this 16-Inch Pro Bike for ages 3-7!

This 13-lb bike is lightweight, yet built specifically for preschoolers. You and your child will love the grease-free and rust-free rubber belts, upgraded hollow bottom bracket, integrated crankset, cassette-free hub for easier pedaling, and front and rear v-pull TEKTRO hand brakes. Our son is 5-years-old and loves zipping around our porch, our neighborhood, and our city on his cookies & cream colored bike. We recently completed an almost 8-mile family bike ride and this bike performed perfectly - a super smooth ride all around!

POOL FLOATS & TOYS BY BIG JOE

If you're having a staycation of sorts this summer, make it extra fun with new toys and floats for the pool! Big Joe makes an assortment of options every year - from hammocks and loungers to slings and floats!

Pictured: Kona Hammock and Pool Petz Small Turtle.

BRINKMAN ADVENTURES RADIO SHOW

We just discovered Brinkman Adventures and can't wait to listen to this "exciting radio show that tells true, modern, missionary stories through the fictional Brinkman family. Each twenty-six minute episode contains a Biblical theme, lesson, and compelling drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat."

Using modern sound effects, original music, and superb writing, Brinkman Adventures have been described as ‘Movies for the Ears’.

CHARLESBRIDGE MATH ADVENTURES

Hooray for book publishers who put out enticing stories that have engaging educational themes! Charlesbridge publishes super clever titles that will draw admiration from any mathematician - whether young or old. The book titles and included puns are sure to draw a smile from anyone who loves numbers.

Pictured: Sir Cumference and The Fraction Faire, Sir Cumference and The First Round Table, Sir Cumference and The Viking's Map, Sir Cumference Gets Decima's Point, Multiplying Menace, and A Place for Zero.

BOOKS & DEVOTIONALS FROM CROSSWAY

When our family embarks on a road trip this summer, we've planned ahead to go through the book of Matthew together. To make it a more engaging and interactive experience, we're bringing along six art-filled copies of the book of Matthew - which are designed for journaling and highlighting. We'll take turns reading the chapters and then discuss. Simple, easy to pack, and beautiful too!

Additionally, we're going to work our way through the New City Catechism. "What's that?" you may ask. To put it concisely, it is "a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith via 52 questions and answers." It's a bite-sized way to discuss theology together as a family and we're excited about these resources as a way to jumpstart conversations about basic truths of the Christian faith.

Last, but not least, I remember staying up late in middle school to read "This Present Darkness" and then the sequel by Frank Peretti. I look forward to re-reading these titles and sharing the suspense with my teenage daughters!

LEARNING GAMES & TECH BY EDUCATIONAL INSIGHTS

Educational Insights makes products that make learning fun! I love companies like this that turn mastery of concepts into a game - especially during the summer when I want my kids to have a relaxing break from their rigorous course load at the classical school they attend while also "sneaking" in some review in an exciting way!

Many of the games by this company are easy to take along with you too for easy use on road trips, camping trips, and at hotels. Instead of handing over a phone, give your child Hot Dots or Multiplication Slam instead!

Pictured: Multiplication Slam, Hot Dots Let's Learn Kindergarten Reading, The Playfoam Game, and Playfoam Sand Ice Cream Sundae Kit.

AUDIO ADVENTURES & ENTICING BOOKS BY FOCUS ON THE FAMILY

I have fond memories of listening to Adventures in Odyssey as a child so it's been a delight to introduce my four children to these captivating theatrical audio adventures.

Focus on the Family also produces professional radio theatre adaptions of a number of classic books. On our road trip this summer, you'll find our family listening to Adventures in Odyssey American History Compilation and Radio Theatre: Oliver Twist.

Focus on the Family has great book options to engage your child(ren) too - including Captain Absolutely (a comic that "attacks" relativism) and Young Whit and the Traitor's Treasure (based on the life of the much-loved character John Avery Whittaker from Adventures in Odyssey).

ONE-PLAYER AND MULTI-PLAYER GAMES BY GAMEWRIGHT

For tech-free fun, our family typically turns to active pursuits (walking, hiking, biking, swimming, cornhole, ping pong) followed by...board games (which are a particular favorite activity for our 10-year-old). Gamewright offers a variety of board game options - such as Logic Land (a one-player game which challenges the player to use deductive reasoning skills to solve problems), Forbidden Island (a strategy game set in a magical kingdom for 2-4 players), and Think 'n Sync (an easy-to-pack, travel-sized game for 3-8 players).

BOOKS BY HARPER COLLINS

One of the most pleasurable pastimes of summer is reading stacks of books! We visit the library all summer long and tend to consume books of all kinds. If you're looking for book ideas for your kids this summer, my first recommendation would be to not neglect the classics or forget your childhood favorites. There is a reason why these two categories have been loved, studied, discussed, and quoted for years!

For lesser known titles, check out the Unsolved Case Files series by author and illustrator Tom Sullivan. Interesting, real-life stories with accompanying retro images. Very fun!

For younger children, consider the Let's Read and Find Out Science series. If your kids love to ask you "why?" this series will help answering puzzling questions in a simple and clear format.

Pictured: Jailbreak at Alcatraz, The Chronicles of Narnia Hardcover 7-Book Set, Fireflies in the Night, Henry and The Clubhouse, Henry and The Paper Route, Henry Huggins, Where Do Chicks Comes From?, Why I Sneeze..., and Escape at 10,000 Feet.

ACTIVITY KITS FROM MADE MODERN

Arizona summers are hot so we tend to spend our summers either swimming, reading, or doing lots and LOTS of arts & crafts projects. Although all four of my kids do their fair share of imaginative art projects using whatever supplies we have on-hand, they are always delighted when presented with a readymade kit to try.

Pictured: DIY Card Making Kit and My Photo Journal.

HELMETS & SAFETY GEAR BY NUTCASE

Now that our youngest child is 5, we've taken a keen interest in family bike rides. This was sparked when we biked through Yosemite National Park last summer - such a perfect way to see the park! Our 10-year-old is an especially good rider - frequently frightening us with her daring stunts!

When we ride, we all wear helmets and have especially appreciated our smartly designed Vio helmets, which come with a removable vizor and an adjustable spin dial for a customized fit. Ideal for riding at dusk because the lights offer much-needed visibility on the road!

DRAWING BOOKS BY PAIGE TATE & CO

Have you seen these How to Draw books for kids by Alli Koch? They feature lots of items that kids love to draw (cats, dogs, cameras, dolphins, penguins, horses, etc) in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step format.

What games, activities, and gear do you pack for your kids for summer vacations?

What to Pack For Summer Vacation: Clothes, Shoes, & Accessories 334

Some parents dread summer. I adore it.

What a treat to sleep in, to drive less, to read books lazily all day long, to go on long walks in the early morning and before sunset, to strap on our helmets and go biking, and...to travel!

Whether you're traveling near or far this summer (or even staying at home sweet home), I'm happy to present some of our family's favorite clothing, footwear, and accessory options for summer vacations!

Bon voyage!

CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR, & ACCESSORIES

SUNGLASSES BY BABIATORS

As parents, we slather on sunscreen to help protect our children from sunburns - but we often forget to protect their eyes as well! Babiators’ award-winning sunglasses for children "protect against 100% of UV rays and are virtually indestructible." These glasses are also polarized (reducing harsh glare) with UV400 lenses that will protect your child’s eyes and surrounding skin from UV rays. All Babiators frames are BPA-free. There are three sizes to choose from: ages 0-2, ages 3-5, or ages 6+.

UPF PROTECTION & SWIMWEAR BY COOLIBAR

Coolibar has been a favorite brand in our house for YEARS! This innovative brand offers fashion-forward designs in incredible color schemes every single summer. Best of all, their pieces offer top-notch sun protection while still being supremely stylish. For 2022, we're especially in love with the neck to ankle swimsuits for kids. Perfect for a day at the beach! No sunscreen needed! Pair with a matching hat for extra protection - and cuteness!

GOLF SEPARATES BY GOLFITINI

When it comes to summer clothes, my teenage daughters and I love to LIVE in golf clothes. They're stretchy, stylish, and perfectly preppy - while allowing for movement for any kind of athletic pursuit (walking, running, tennis, golf, hiking, volleyball). In other words, we can look put together without having to sacrifice comfort. No itching, pinching, digging, or squeezing!

AFFORDABLE AND CHIC STYLES FOR THE FAMILY AT H&M

If you prefer a laidback, beachy, west coast vibe for your clothes, you will go crazy at H&M. The styles are mostly casual; super easy to wear for every day adventures at home or on-the-go. If you head to your nearest mall, you can find pieces for babies, kids, teens, men, and women - most with a price tag between $10 and $25. H&M is an especially great brand for tweens and teens because they offer items that are exactly on-trend without breaking the bank.

Pictured: Printed Tshirt, Knit Sweater, Belted Twill Shorts, Sneakers, and 2-Pack Sports Tops.

FLORAL DRESSES BY JANIE & JACK

As you know, I adore the Janie & Jack brand and I visit their website every single season to ooh and aah at their preppy, chic pieces for ages newborn up through size 18. Their clothes are posh enough to wear to English riding lessons, to an afternoon tea party, or to a music recital - but they also offer everyday pieces for at home and in the backyard. If I could dress my kids exclusively in Janie & Jack, I would.

Pictured: Gemma Ruffle Button Down Blouse, Catherine Boyfriend Short (Animating Wash), and Jasmine Printed Blouse.

FRESH STYLES FROM LUCKY BRAND

Lucky Brand offers fashion-forward pieces for both men and women (teens too!). Wide leg jeans are currently en vogue, which is a refreshing trend compared to skinny jeans and jeggings. Pair with a crisp, classic white button-up for an outfit that can go so many places!

FOOTWEAR BY SCARPA

SCARPA is a family-owned company that has been making shoes since 1938. Today, they are especially well-known for high performance shoes for climbing, hiking, running, skiing, and any number of other athletic pursuits. These well-made shoes offer plentiful cushioning, impact absorption, water protection, and great traction for wherever your next run takes you. The Golden Gate ATR (pictured above in black and pink) are among the most comfortable tennis shoes I have owned in the past decade. (If you're 40 or over, you will appreciate the extra support for your knees, arches, and joints).

TODDLER & PRESCHOOL SHOES BY SEE KAI RUN

See Kai Run shoes have been part of our family for almost 15 years. In fact, we were part of helping to launch the brand into the spotlight! See Kai Run debuted in 2004 and we had our first baby two years later (the same year Metropolitan Mama was born...I birthed both a baby and a blog!). These shoes remain a favorite with our youngest child, who is five. They are supportive and stylish - made with durable, breathable, lightweight materials that kids love. See Kai Run offers shoes, sandals, and boots for babies up to size youth 3 (approximately age 8).

FASHIONABLE SWIMWEAR FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AT SNAPPER ROCK

We've loved every item we've ever tried from Snapper Rock. To put it simply, Snapper Rock has both design and fit down to a "T." If you're into matching as a family, mother/daughter, father/son, or sibling set, you will LOVE Snapper Rock because they offer coordinating colors and outfits for your whole crew.

VTECH ELECTRONICS

Wearing a watch is a helpful way for young children to learn to manage time. The KidiZoom® Smartwatch DX3 also features dual cameras for pictures, one- and two-player games (like Monster Catcher, Crazy Dance, Find the Diamonds, and Tic-Tac-Toe), and an option to set daily reminders. Plus, the light on the watch doubles as a flashlight! Best for ages 5-10.

What brands are you shopping for your next summer vacation?

Our youngest child will be heading to Kindergarten this fall.

As you know if you have been reading my writing for any length of time, I believe in hefty doses of nature, play, and reading in the early years. I'm generally a huge fan of boredom, tech-free space, the outdoors, nurturing relationships, and creative play for preschoolers. Come to think of it, all of the above are an excellent recipe for an intentional life for adults also.

It might strike you as odd, then, that we enrolled our youngest son in preschool this semester. Indeed, he is the first of our children to attend preschool of any kind. We've always done our own thing at home - Kumon workbooks, alphabet wall posters, artistic flash cards, catchy songs, and thematic picture book reading.

This semester, however, we enrolled him in half-day preschool at a wonderful Reggio Emilia, Christian preschool to help prepare him for the rigorous Kindergarten he will attend in the fall.

When we had the admissions interview at the preschool, the director asked me to describe our son. The very first word that popped in my head was, "delightful." He is kind, gentle, tender-hearted, and obedient. An old soul. A tiny gentleman. Resolute in his convictions. Subdued and observant. A perfectionist like one of his sisters before him.

He can write his first name in capitals, write the alphabet in uppercase (A-Z), write numbers up to 20+, name basic colors & shapes, identify his right and left hands, and pinpoint beginning sounds for most (all?) of the letters. Thanks to preschool, he can also show you basic sign language letters.

Overall, half-day preschool has been a good experience and I am thankful that he has this opportunity to learn and grow before Kindergarten.

This post is brought to you by Carter's, one of the first brands I turned to when we decided to enroll our son in preschool. Carter's has soft, well-designed, quality clothes at affordable prices. I've been dressing my kids in Carter's for over 15 years, since I brought home my very first itty bitty baby from the hospital.

For kids who are 8+ and/or reading proficiently, Quiddler is a stocking stuffer sized game, which is receiving rave reviews. The publisher describes it as a "short word game." Emily Dickinson notecards

Poet Emily Dickinson was a talented writer, a master of prose and meter. It only makes sense that her poetry would end up on lovely notecards in autumnal colors with pressed flowers on the envelopes. (Fun fact: Emily Dickinson actually had a hobby of pressing plants and flowers!)

BOOKS, BOOKS, AND MORE BOOKS!

Missionary Biographies by YWAM Publishing

Start the year off by reading aloud the courageous stories of men and women of the Christian faith who gave their all (including, sometimes, their lives) for the sake of the Gospel. Written by Janet and Geoff Benge, there are currently 50 books in the "Christian Heroes: Then & Now" series. Be ready for tears & inspiration!

Anything by Illustrator Bernadette Watts

I first discovered illustrator Bernadette Watts at a thrift store many years ago and was instantly smitten. In fact, I wrote to Bernadette to see if she might be interested in collaborating on a picture book with me (and she wrote me back (!), explaining that she was advancing in age and no longer working with collaborators). If you haven't been introduced to her magical art, it is my distinct pleasure to do so now.

Short Treatises on Life by Douglas Wilson

If you are immersed in the classical education world, then you are likely familiar with the work of Douglas Wilson. A pastor at Christ Church in Moscow (Idaho) and a faculty member at New Saint Andrews College, he is a prolific writer on many topics and I am eager to begin working my way through these slim paperbacks. Watch my goodreads account for reviews of each title.

OTHER CLASSICAL ED BOOKS BY THE CIRCE INSTITUTE

Classical education is making a resurgence across America...and for good reason! Classical education promotes the pursuit of the good, the true, and the beautiful through a return to great books. Classical educators thoughtfully and elegantly engage their students in three stages (known as the trivium: grammar, logic, and rhetoric). Want to learn more? The CiRCE Institute is a good place to start.

Barnes & Noble Exclusives

I've been collecting titles from Barnes & Nobles exclusives collection over the past few years. These classic books range in price from $10-$25 and are beautiful to behold. The handsome spines, intricate covers, and shiny exteriors make these books particularly gift-worthy, even without wrapping paper.

ILLUMINATED BIBLE, ART JOURNALING EDITION

This may, in fact, be the most beautiful Bible currently on the market. The cover is navy with exquisite, hand-lettered gold ink illustrations. The interior pages are works of art in and of themselves - with plentiful space to add your own musings, questions, and prayers.
