BEST OF 2009: Kid Products

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products 1It's weird. For the longest time, my firstborn was my BABY. Then, she was a toddler. But now...now she is a full-fledged kid. She rides bikes and chews gum and picks out her own clothes. She is a beautiful, bright little girl with a heart of gold - so different from the tiny baby that was placed in my arms 3 years ago, yet I know her through-and-through just the same.

I reviewed my fair share of kid-related products this past year and quite a few of them were really wonderful, but I narrowed down my picks to three OUTSTANDING, AMAZING, YOU-WON'T-REGRET-BUYING-THEM products.

Here goes...

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products 2the Nora Boot by Eleven Collection

Soft. Sturdy. Stylish. Sweet. All of those words perfectly describe the Nora Boot by Eleven Collection. Our 3-year-old has been wearing them all over the place this winter - around our neighborhood, at Disneyland, the park, the grocery store, etc. She always gets compliments on them because they are fabulously fashionable, but they must be ultra-comfy too because she always picks them over her tennis shoes and sandals. Because they provide extra coverage, they're ideal for hiking and splashing through puddles...but they're equally well-suited for city girls.

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products 3On sale for $45, the price is a little steep, but it's actually a small price to pay for something your child wears every single day...on their feet. My preschooler uses her feet A LOT for running and jumping and hopping and spinning and bike pedaling...so good shoes are important. That's the way I see it.

Eleven Collection is a Portland-based company that specializes in shoes for 3-8 year olds. They retail for between $30-58.

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products 4Clothing from Tea Collection

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If I could dress my girls in only Tea, I would. Tea Collection offers beautiful, global-inspired, modern pieces that are both playful and sophisticated.

My 3-year-old isn't much into frills and lace and zippers and buttons. She likes easy, no-nonsense pieces - preferably with elastic waists and no buttons. I don't blame her a bit.

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products 5That said, I DO like her to be cute and put-together too. Tea Collection solves my conundrum because the clothes are gorgeous and outstanding, but they're also soft and super simple. Go check out the pieces for yourself. You're bound to fall in love.

These designer kids clothes are highly durable and undeniably unique. Don't forget to peruse the Sale section for the latest bargains. I'm just a-waiting for the day they have a big 75% off blow-out sale and I'm going to go in and scoop up a new wardrobe for my girls.

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products 6"Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch" by Eileen Spinelli

I'm kind of a children's book nut...meaning I totally love them as much as my girls do. I get SO EXCITED when an illustrated book arrives in the mail.

Every once in awhile one arrives that stops me in my tracks. "Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch" (published by Simon & Schuster) is like that. The illustrations are lovely and captivating. The story is mesmerizing and emotional. The message is heartwarming - and I often end up a little teary-eyed when I read the triumphant last page.

I certainly don't want to "spoil" the joy for you, but - in a nutshell - the book chronicles the life of a lonely old spinster whose life is completely revolutionized when he receives a special gift in the mail. I sort of get goosebumps just writing this because the story is awesome. Your child's bookshelf wants a copy.

  21. Please enter me in this one too! Our little #1 gal love loves her shoes that I have splurged on from See Kai Run and her boots are her favorites. I had to sort of hold her off of wearing them all summer- she always picked them over sandals, etc- now we find any excuse to wear them before they are outgrown. 28. I wouldn't be browsing the aforementioned clothing/shoe stores: too pricey, so this giveaway is perfect. But in face of such stiff competition I still wouldn't have entered if it wasn't for the book. We saw this book being read on video, and my, what a book! I do covet that!

  29. I like the shoes styles at Eleven Collection.

  35. I was a fan of Eleven (and See Kai Run) shoes already but just now I got done picking out the clothes already. :) My daughter would look so cute in the Sparrow Double Decker Dress.

  36. I have one thing is true. If there is a 3 year old in the room, there are never enough books to read to them. This looks like a charming book to add to any collection.

  37. Since I have 3 boys, I just checked out the Tea Collection clothes for little boys. The clothes are adorable! I would love to dress my boys in them!

  41. I also love children's books and it delights me when I find a new one -- well written with a meaningful message -- to read to my daughter.

  42. “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch” sounds like a wonderful book, I'm going to have to check it out the next time I'm at Barnes & Noble. The shoes & clothes also looks quite nice, time for more online shopping! =)

  45. Mr. Hatch looks sweet, I recently got "I Love You Forever" and that definitely tugs at my heart strings. So many good books out there to find!

  46. It is truly amazing how fast their little feet grow isnt it? My 8 month old nephew is already in a size 4 shoe! He would look adorable in some cute little Eleven shoes.

  50. I live 1200 miles away from my young grandson and have not gotten anything for him for christmas as of yet I was told he needs cloths bad and with growing so fast its hard to choose. This way he would have want they wanted him to have and not something from walmart but be dresses in style.
The book would be great since I live so far away when my son reads the book to him they can say its grandma who loves me.

Thank you so much for giving me a chance to be a winner

    camper223[at]live[dot]com

  51. Oh my, I love the Tea Collection! Those clothes are the cutest. And of course I love See Kai Run. I haven't gotten a chance to try the Eleven Collection yet, but my daughter just turned three and I've been wanting to get a pair for her to try.

  52. I love all the vibrant prints on some of the boys' tees at Tea Collection - I've got 3 boys, always looking for cute boy clothes.

  53. I'm totally in love with the clothes at Tea Collection! Some of them are a bit pricey, but others are right in my price range. The varying Asian-influenced collections are right up my alley, since we are a multi-cultural family.

  54. I absolutely LOVE the Tea collection! I would dress my girls in it exclusively - and have secretly wished that a couple of their beautiful things came in my size!

  55. I know for certain that the Eleven Shoes and Tea Clothing is great, so I'll take your word about the book as well. This is an excellent set of prizes and I'd love to win.

  56. I have to leave a comment about he book "Somebody Loves You Mr.Hatch" !! lol I don't have kids yet (JoHanna will be end of feb, first of March) But Hatch is my Maiden last name!! 57. The clothing is adorable and love the look of the shoes. The Satori Stripe Sweater from the tea collection would look cute on my son.

  58. Your review on the book has me wanting to go out and buy it right now! It sounds like a beautiful story. Thanks for the opportunity to win some fabulous items for my children =)

  59. I love Children's books too. I buy 2 copies: one for home and one for work!

And Eleven shoes are my all time fav for my son. Love them!

  60. I absolutely adore this book and would love to own it. I have a picture book collection and this would make a lovely addition. Thanks for the chance at winning this prize package.

  61. Awe Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch sounds like it would be sweet and would make a great Valentines present. I've also heard great things about the Eleven Collection.

  62. I love childrens books too. There a lot out there with great stories and illustrations and this sounds like one too. semtaylor(at)yahoo(dot)com

  63. Your favs of 2009 in the kids' department are wonderful! I, too, love the Tea Collection...so special, yet appropriate for a child's life. The book sounds delightful...I thought to myself when you blogged about it earlier this year that I needed to look it up...it would be even better to win it!

  64. My one-year-old daughter would LOVE those boots and clothes (okay, actually I would LOVE to see her in those boots and clothes!). That book sounds wonderful too!

  65. I actually found a few tea clothing items at the thrift store for my daughter.. they are soo cute and they have a nice fit! fantastic stuff they have :D

  66. My favorite outfit my daughter wears is a Tea Collection top and bottom. They have such classic, well made clothing!

  67. Kids are so funny when it comes to shoes. Last year our 2 year old grandson had to wear his sandals everywhere - even when they got too small. When the cold weather hit he finally gave up wearing them outside. His sister is the same way with a pair of pink tennis shoes. We've had to hunt down the same pair of tennis shoes in a bigger size. I think it means they will be major shoe buyers when they grow up.

The book would be great for my grand daughter to read. She always worries when we are out together and she see "old people" without grandkids. She thinks they are lonely so she always talk to them.
I think I'll get her that book.

  68. my favorite shoe from Eleven is Josef and my favorite and from the tea collection I love the Seoul Plaid Shirt.

  69. I'm always on the look out for cute boots and clothes for my two girls. These look comfortable, functional and absolutely adorable. A win, win , win! I am also a children's book nut, it's somewhat of a weakness of mine. :)

  70. I am addicted to cute shoes and clothes for my little girls! I love them... a great outfit makes me feel like my kids are well put together. Are they always dressed nice? Heck no... most of the time they look like small homeless children. Dirt on their faces, hair in disarray, and shoes on the wrong feet. But at least they are dressed right?

  71. My daughter has the same fashion ideas yours does, easy to put on and take off. I love cute clothes like the Tea Collection. Crossing my fingers...

  72. I just love those little boots! Think my boys would mind wearing them, or should I wait for my one year-old to grow into some? LOL.

Love that your little girl is riding her bike! My 5yo still hasn't got the hang of it, mostly because we have to drive to the park for him to have a place to ride. Mountain living is nice, but I'd love to have a flat spot for him to ride on!

  73. Tea Collection has some really cute clothes. And I love the styles that Eleven has to offer in shoes. Thanks!

    braaisjo at gmail dot com

  74. This is one of the reasons I love your blog so much. You have some wonderful products featured. My 4 year old would love all of these. Thanks!

  75. The Eleven shoes are so stylish and look very well made. I'm sure my nephew would love a pair, maybe the Josef or Caper styles.

  76. LOVE eleven shoes, the best quality and best selection around. The only shoes my son will wear, he says all the others are too heavy or too uncomfortable.

  77. I am a big book fan. Somebody Loves you, Mr. Hatch is new to me. I'd love to read it with my kids.
I have gotten the Tea catalogs in the mail, but your site is the first I've heard of their 75% off sale. I'm off to check it out!

  78. Love those boots! I'm thinking my little girl would love them as well...she is all girl and LOVES shoes! Another great giveaway. If I don't win I might have to buy that book myself!

  79. This may be one of my favorite giveaways ever!! My daughter's feet just outgrew See Kai Run sizes and I can't wait to get her into a pair of Eleven's. And if I could only have all the money in the world, my girl's would own every item sold from Tea Collection. If for no other reason than I could walk into their closets and stare at the beauty every day!!!

  80. My god-daughter would love all these items. They are adorable and she is such a girly-girl. The boots especially are so chic!

  81. Tea collection and Eleven shoes are among my most favorite kids stuff sources EVER!! I rave about them to everyone. I would love this!!

  82. i knew right away when i saw the picture of your daughter (not with the bike, but in the chair) that she was wearing something from Tea Collection and i recognize See Kai Run/Eleven shoes anywhere. i love them. i bought my daughter the same shoe two years in a row because i loved them so much (she outgrew them) and did the same with my son.

  83. Cherish those moments with your daughter. My oldest is 14 now and I still can remember those milestones of his life. I still call him my baby, and all I get back is "Mom!!"

  84. that tea collection stuff is so cute. I always hate buying kids' clothes (we get handmedowns from relatives) because they outgrow them so quickly, but I have to splurge every now and then and this stuff would be a good choice for that!

  85. The Eleven boots look so comfy...too bad they don't come in my size. One of my 3-year-old's favorite dresses comes from Tea, and she and her older sister are crazy for books, so this is a GREAT giveaway for this family!!

  86. Tea clothes are the best! And this shoe brand is new to me! We'd love to check them out. And this book is precious! Great taste!

  87. What a wonderful set of prizes! The clothes on Tea look fabulous. I adore the Chinese Jacket and the Ava 4 piece set.

  88. I like the Carlo slip on loafer from Eleven but they are all nice.If I'd win I'd be giving the prize to a dear old lady friend for her great grandchild, Im sure she'd be thrilled.

  89. I would love to get some Tea collection cloths for my son. We have had some in the past and they are great. They are very sturdy and look great. Thanks for the giveaway.

  90. I first stumbled upon this contest about an hour ago and clicked on the link for the tea collection hoping to get insperation for a comment. I fell in love with everything on the site! I just now got off the site and remembered to enter!

  91. Aw, what a cute giveaway package! The books sounds especially sweet - the description reminds me a little bit of the movie Amelie.

  92. I am a HUGE fan of those Eleven boots as well. I bought my daughter the black ones and she has word them over and over. She says they are comfy and I think they are cute and stylish best of both worlds!

  93. I am always on the lookout for things that would be appropriate for my grandson, and this giveaway would hit on several counts.

  94. My 6 year old son is a read-a-holic. There is nothing that can keep his eyes out of a book. I love it and I am constantly looking for new books with a good message. This one sounds really nice.

I have never bought any tea collection clothing for my daughter but I do know it fits my son to a T. I love how his clothing always looks tailored when he wears tea

  95. How adorable are all of the gifts; Eleven is such a great gift all the way around, they have the cutest styles for kids; The book, well a book, is always the greatest gift and that pick looks so interesting, even if I don't win I will go to the library and borrow a copy. The tea collection just completes it all, adorable clothing!

    angelaa @ labi.org

  96. Our daughter has a pair of the "Eleven" shoes, and I just love them (so does she!). I was amazed at how soft the leather was and the high quality of how they were made. I highly doubt she will even wear them out before she grows out of them! :(

  97. I love the prints for the clothing at the Tea Collection. The quality looks really nice. I've gotten their catalog before and love their styles.

  98. Ive always been a fan of Tea Collection but never been willing to pay the price for something she'll wear for a few months.

I'm a children's book fanatic as well as my daughter loves to read. Thanks for the suggestion. My daughter gets her favs & I get stuck reading the same book over & over, so I have to coerce her to read something else :)

  99. I love Tea Collection clothes. The newborn girls clothes are so adorable! I have 2 little boys and I always drool over little girls clothes so I buy them for my niece. I have purchased many tea Collection things for her over the years.

  100. Eleven shoes are absolutely wonderful. My son has a pair and they are all he wants to wear. The quality is fantastic.

  101. Been drooling over eleven shoes and tea clothing for my little boy awhile now. And those kid feet grow so fast!!
    tvollowitz at aol dot com

  102. This would be quite the win. I love Eleven shoes. My youngest has a pair and they are holding up so well. She wears them every day and they still look great.

  103. It's funny when children (especially little girls) get to the age where they begin to dress themselves and pick out their own clothes. You'd think that their personal style would be a mirror of their mom or dads but this is so not the case. When my daughter started dressing herself and picking out her own clothes I found she has a style so different from me (I mean her favorite color is neon green for goodness sake!!!!)
Anyway I love the styles of shoes from Eleven and the clothes from Tea..a little of my taste mixed with my dauthers so this would be great!

  104. Kids do seem to grow up so fast. I'm so surprised that my God-daughter is going to be six this year. It doesn't seem so long ago when I witnessed her first word and crawl attempts~ And my God-nephew's going to be 2 this month! My goodness!

This giveaway prize would all be great for my God-daughter. I've always wanted to win her a pair of Eleven shoes.

  105. I love love love the Josie's from the Eleven collection, they're so adorable and would fit my little sister's "punky" style! Thanks!

  106. All of these things look great - but I think I would be most excited about the book. If I don't win, I will definitely be looking to get a copy of my own!

  107. Eleven shoes are definitely high quality. Like you said, they cost more than some others might but for the amount of use they're going to get, it's worth it.

I only recently heard of Tea, but from what I've seen, they make gorgeous clothing! Combine them with the Eleven shoes and we'd be totally set!

  108. My daughter has one pair of shoes from the eleven collection and we LOVE them. They are super comfortable and durable. I'd love to add another pair to her collection. The other prizes are great, too! I would love to try out some new products.

  109. We just bought our first pair of shoes from the Eleven collection and are loving them already!

The book looks great too. I'll have to check it out.

  110. I've been wanting Elevens and Tea Collection clothing for a while now, and the girls would always love a new book! These are a great trio of gifts.

  111. Since I watch my grandkids everyday we read a lot as well as go to the library a lot. Since Thursday is our library day we will see if we can get this book. It sounds great.

  112. We just got Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch for Christmas - I agree, it's an amazing book. When I win this collection (haha) I'll just have to give the new copy to my nieces and keep the shoes/clothes for my daughter!

  113. That book sounds fun. I have been thinking about finding a good 'chapter' book to start reading to my almost 3 year old. She loves reading and being read to. I often times leave out words or sentences while I read to her and she fills them in! I mentioned this before, but with my daughters chubby little feet, See Kai Run are the only shoes that used to fit her feet. I have yet to try a pair of Elevens.

  114. Those boots look so cute! Gotta check out the book, haven't heard of it, but will definately check it out for my little girl.

  115. I love that your favorite kids products aren't loads of toys! I'm a children's book nut too! Levi gets more books than anything else, and I get just as excited about new ones as he does.

  116. Too cute! Children's books that are fun to read that have a life lesson in them are delightful!
Tea Clothing is some of the daintiest that I have seen available. Thanks very much!
    Cindi

  117. The eleven shoes are so adorable!! I love kid books - maybe I'll have to check to see if they have that one at our local library (if I don't win) =) We got our son "I'm Your Peanut Butter Big Brother" for Christmas and he loves it and so do I --- amazing book for bi-racial families expecting their second child!

    autumn398 @ yahoo.com

  118. I love kids books too. And I especially love ones that leave me teary-eyed at the end. :) I'll have to look into that book! (unless I win it!) And I'm still in love with the Tea Collection clothes. They are too pricey for our budget but I adore them....so cute!! And those boots.....adorable!!

  119. You've got three of my favorite things here, as a librarian I am all about books, as a shoe lover-you've got those covered and I love Tea clothing!

  120. OMG...I have a girl now! That means I can enter the contests where you give away all the girly stuff. I love it!

I just checked out Tea and notice they have boy stuff too. But the girl stuff is to die for. :)

  121. I've definitely admired the eleven shoes & Tea collection when you've posted on them in the past - so many cute, stylish things! But we haven't yet found a copy of that book, and it sounds so fantastic...must add that to the library list!

  122. I love Tea! But loved your "why we don't spank" post even more. It is such a hard topic to discuss and you did such a good job. It is also so so hard to know what the best way to discipline is, specially the more your kids grow.
and now I want this children's book too!!!

  123. As a mom of growing girls we always need new clothes and these boots and the Tea Collection are so cute! I am excited that Lily is finally into reading books. She brings them to me all of the time and says "wead" "wead" She trys so hard to make the r sound but right now it sounds like wead.

  124. The Nora boots are too cute! I feel the same way about my three year old daughter...she is growing up so fast. We'll have to add your book pick to our list of things to read.

  125. I would love some Eleven shoes. I 'm waiting til summer to use the last Tea certificate - so tempted to buy long-sleeves, but they get so little wear!

  126. Ooh that book looks great, as do the clothes! I'm going to have to check them out, regardless!
Everything you post is just my style! My poor credit card bill....

:) Keep the great suggestions and recommendations coming!

  127. I'm in love with Tea Collection. They have the cutest stuff for kids! I've never heard of Eleven, bit those boots are adorable, and my 5 year old could definitely use some. I've also never heard of that book, but it sounds like a keeper. My daughter likes feel good books, like the The Giving Tree. I'll have to check this one out.

  128. I just heard about eleven shoes the other day. For as much playing outside my almost 3 year old does they would be perfect, esp. when it gets rainy and damp! She is pretty hard on shoes, so it is definitely something I'd like to invest in!

  129. I also love books for my kids. That's nearly always my response when friends or family ask what they should give them for birthdays and holidays. My 2.5yo loves them too, and goes from favorite to favorite. Lately she loves to "read" I Love You Through and Through (that we received from a giveaway here) to her nearly 1yo brother.

  130. My daughter has a few pairs of See Kai Run shoes, and they're such nice quality. With the Eleven Collection being a sister company to See Kai Run, I imagine they're just as great!

  131. I can't agree with you more. Tea + eleven = to die for cute. We love getting tea outfits for our girls, but have to save them for special occasions. I just love them so much!

  132. I am a school teacher and a book nut also!! I read to my daughter every chance I get. I am going to have to go find that book, it sounds great.

  133. I love that story...I always get so touched when I read it. My little one is still a "baby" but in the not so soon future that won't be the case. They do grow up so quickly however it is so exciting to see them explore and learn more and more on their own. I look forward to it!

  134. I have won 2 pairs of Eleven shoes for my oldest son! They really are super hip and comfortable shoes! The Tea collection is always fun to peruse dreamily, a bit on the steep side for us! I'm very curious about that book now, might have to see if the library carries it! Thanks!

  135. I love See Kai Run, and the Tea Collection looks just beautiful. I love children's books too. Thanks for these reviews. :)

  136. How adorable is your little girl posing with her bike? I think the same thing about my oldest daughter being a KID now. Good thing I have a little baby to love on still as well as my grown up girl!

  137. Sugar received a bookstore gift card for Christmas... now I have another book to put on the list of things to look for when we go spend it!

I love the Tea Collection too - those clothes are awesome and as far as boots go - I picked up a pair for Sugar at the fall JBF Consignment Sale and they are all she wants to wear. Of course right now we have 8 to 10 inches of snow so... boots are an excellent choice! :)

  138. You have great taste because those are my fave pics for my daughter too! I love See Kai Run shoes (eleven collection family) and tea clothes. I would love to read somebody loves you Mr Hatch to my daughter. She loves loves loves books and we read them all day long!
