books + bed = a good combination

books + bed = a good combination 1I am tired.

Uncharacteristically tired.

Every night for the past week, as I lay beside my 1-year-old at 8:00pm and wait for her to drift off to sleep, I almost fall asleep.

Selling everything and planning a cross-country giving trek is exhausting (to say the least). We have so many things in limbo - it's hard to keep up.

Even now, my eyelids are drooping and I'm wondering which e-mails can wait for tomorrow.

I want to tuck myself into bed w/ a big glass of water (water is my favorite drink) and a book. My library bin has the following books in it: Healthy at 100, Now Discover Your Strengths, The Hunger Games, and The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. Which one should I read first?

What book(s) are you reading? What time do you typically go to bed and wake up?

  1. I so wish I was reading a book, I just haven't had time. My days are so full of work, running the girls around, doing homework and then working some more. If I had a book to read right now I'd have to read the Hunger Games series and then the Girl with the Tattoo and everything else. My husband just read all of them and liked them all.

Get some sleep - good luck.

  2. My husband is a night owl, and I have adjusted to his schedule (kind of). We usually end up staying up until midnight, 1 am every night. (He would prefer to stay up until 3am!). The kids don't wake up until about 8am, so normally we all still get enough sleep.

Right now I am reading a few books...

    1) In Defense of Food- which has already made me want to change how I feed my family! (I blogged about it: http://sobrakseaton.com/krista/?p=946)

    2) The Man Who Loved Only Numbers- a story of Paul Erdos, a mathematician

    3) And I am about to start: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, reading for the book club I am in!

  3. I usually read every night before bed...sometimes for hours, sometimes for a few minutes before I doze off. I am more of a novel reader...right now I am reading a book called Tara Road. We are usually in bed between 10-11pm and up way too early. Our kiddos insist on waking up before 7am every morning. Time change was wonderful prior to birthing some early risers :-)

  4. The Hunger Games! And then Catching Fire, and then Mockingjay. But definitely The Hunger Games. I couldn't put it down, and I am not a fantasy person!

  5. I love the Strengths Finder books. My results showed things I knew about myself but hadn't necessarily been able to articulate. And, if you're super-tired, it's a fast read!

  6. Hunger Games was the only book that caused me nightmares. Seriously. That said, I had to read all three and since I finished the trilogy I cannot seem to find a book that captivates me the way these did. I would wait on it until you can read the trilogy and not have interrupted sleep (either from reading late, or the disturbing images it will cause).

Have you read The Princess Academy or Goose Girl? I enjoyed those very much. YA genre, which appeals to me, and they were both charming fairy tales.

    1. I haven't read either of those two, but I just looked them up on Amazon and they're now on my library list. Thank you for the recommendations!

  7. If you have The Hunger Games sitting by your table, how can you NOT devour that book immediately!!!! It is hands down one of the most exciting, entertaining YA fiction books to come out in a long time. I taught 7th and 8th grade for the past 5 years and kids are ravenous for that series like I've never seen!!!
Read it. But the other commenters are right. You won't get any sleep! :) haha... can't wait to hear what you think!!
Do you use GoodReads.com by any chance?

    1. No, I don't, but it looks like fun! I just can't afford to add another social media site to my life right now...even if it does revolve around one of my very favorite topics: BOOKS. :)

  8. Hunger Games is fabulous. It is a bit disturbing in concept, but so well written that you will find it enjoyable.

I am reading The Keys to the Demon Prison book 5 in the Fablehaven Series and I always have to read before bed! I can't seem to fall asleep without reading to wind down.

  9. From reading the title I thought this post was going to be about kids+book=bed for me. HA! I'll explain: My almost 4yo sometimes falls asleep in the afternoon after a particularly busy morning. Unfortunately that means it's difficult for him to fall asleep before 10 or 10:30 at night. So if my husband and I are feeling like we need some Z's we let him pick out a few books, turn on his nightlight and we go to bed. At some point he drifts off blissfully.

I always feel tired this time of the year. I think it has to do with season changing and my body's circadian rhythm readjusting to less sunlight. But obviously the moving thing probably factors in greatly in your case!

  10. I try to be in bed at 10 but it's usually closer to 11. My alarm is set for 6:40, but would like to set it for 6 so I can exercise in the morning, but I too am always exhausted. Right now I'm reading Siblings Without Rivarly. A wonderful resource for anyone with siblings. I'm intrigued by the Hunger Games since I hadn't heard of it.

  11. I cant even imagine how hard it is to plan your big adventure. It took me three months to pack all four of us to go to Russia for two weeks.

Since I had kids I realized that tucking myself in bed with a book and a drink is the biggest luxury I have :)

  12. I'm interested in your thoughts on Hunger Games. It is on my nightstand too. I started it, and honestly hated the beginning. Not that it is poorly written... not at all. The content is horrifying and depressing and a little nauseating. Keep in mind I am a big baby too. I honestly couldn't continue it. BUT I hear how many people love it so I debate "pushing through" and getting to (hopefully) some good stuff. Honestly let me know what you think about it when you read it.

My bedtime? Most often by 10 I crawl into bed to read and wind down. Usually out by 10:30. Now an then I get caught up doing something and find it to be much later, but I pay for when the alarm sounds at 5 am!

    1. Chelsea, You're not alone! I haven't even started Hunger Games because of what I know of the premise. Lots of people assure me that I'll love it, but I'm not certain I want to allow that story into my psyche.

      1. Now, I'm intrigued (and a little nervous?). I don't even know what the premise of the book is. I picked it up at the library because it seems like "everyone" is talking about it...

  13. I finished NutureShock a few weeks ago - Amazing book! I am currently reading The Undaunted, an historical fiction book about the Hole In the Rock Expedition of the Four Corners area. Great stuff! Historical fiction is my absolute favorite. I also reading Selected Short Stories by Anton Chekhov. Russian literature fascinates me.

We are pretty consistent with sleep around here unless it is Golden Bell season ;-). Kids go to bed around 8 or 8:30, and my husband and I are in bed usually no later than 10 p.m. on weekdays as we are up at 5:30 every morning.

    1. You're the second person to mention NurtureShock here! As a result, I just added the book to my library list. Thank you.

      1. You are quite welcome. The chapter on why kids lie is particularly interesting. I have tested out some of the strategies there and WOW - did these authors ever hit the nail on the head with it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

        1. I'm only a short way into NurtureShock and I'm fascinated by the topics. It's a great read! I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. :)

  14. Hunger Games!

No matter what time I go to bed I have to read my book. Right now it's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But my eyes usually tell me that I can't read for long. It takes me forever to get through one book now where I used to read multiple in a week and miss that!

  15. I've not read any of those you listed, so I don't know which to pick.

Right now, I'm reading a Mary Janice Davidson book, can't remember the title off the top of my head.

I aim to be in bed by 11, most nights its closer to 12. Up at 6:30 to get Big C ready for school.

  16. I need to go to bed by 10:00, but usually stay up working past midnight. We get up around 6:30.
I'm currently reading two fiction novels (Another Fine Myth and Sincerely, Avery) two non-fiction (NurtureShock and Innumeracy) and several vegan cookbooks. Our library has an amazing collection of cookbooks! It takes me quite a while to get through a book. They are scattered all over the house and I keep one in the car. I read a page or two whenever I get a chance.

  17. Don't read Hunger Games! I staid up till 3 too to read it and then read the next one the next night and the next one two weeks later. Each in one sitting! They are too good to put down.

  18. If you're really tired and need to sleep, I wouldn't recommend starting "The Hunger Games." Once you start reading that, its hard to stop. I blame that book for several 3 am bedtimes! During the schoolyear, I'm mostly reading books to keep myself current in my field and the classes I teach, so I'm not reading anything that's likely to extend my bedtime too far if I start it before going to sleep!

I'm a total night owl, but I'm trying to start going to bed earlier, so tonight it will probably be around midnight. I usually get up whenever my girls get up, which is anytime between 8 and 9 (although this morning was 9:30, bless their little souls!) But tomorrow I teach, so bed should be earlier and I'll be up at 7:30. I realize its ridiculous to think of 7:30 as getting up early, but it is for me. :)

    1. Our sleeping patterns are very similar. Tim & I usually go to bed between midnight and 2am. Our whole family wakes up around 8:00am.
