Books for Kids That Fit in Stockings

Trying to think of something worthwhile, educational, and entertaining for your child's stocking? Look! A book!

I've put together a short list of SMALL BOOKS that will fit perfectly in a stocking, but also have plentiful appeal.

There are obviously countless books that fit in this category, but I have selected just a few options with an emphasis on newly published books, books we have recently discovered, or favorite books that have new (small) editions.

BabyLit Alphabet Board Books

Take a look at these boards books by BabyLit, with delightfully vintage illustrations by the very talented Greg Paprocki. "A is for Atom" is a mid-century alphabet with one word for each letter. "S is for School" includes adorable illustrations that celebrate the joys of learning in a classroom along with friends. "L is for Love" is the newest release in the series and it would be perfect in a Valentine gift box for a toddler. Can't wait to see the rest of this series.

Imagination Station

If your child enjoyed Magic Tree House, then he or she will likely enjoy this Christian version, published by Focus on the Family. Two cousins travel back in time to various momentous events in history or to Bible times - and have a variety of adventures along the way. Recommended for ages 5-10.

Heroes for Young Readers (YWAM Publishing)

These introductory biographies of heroes of the Christian faith are small hardcovers, which are written in verse and feature color illustrations on every page. Heroes to choose from include: Amy Carmichael, Gladys Alyward, C.S. Lewis, Nate Saint, Nick Vujici, Ida Scudder, and many others. I would have preferred these titles in regular prose and with greater context for each story, but they are still a good starting point for learning about people who have made a difference in the world. Best-suited for ages 5-10.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Canterbury Classics, 2017)

Young readers will enjoy getting lost in this wild and whimsical tale. As a double bonus, this delightful version by Canterbury Classics includes the original illustrations by W.W. Denslow, as well as brand NEW illustrations by Cherie Zamazing. Consequently, you are able to experience nostalgia as you read, while also imagining the story in a brand new way.

Bea is for Business

I haven't seen many books to inspire entrepreneurship in young children so this series caught my eye. The first two books ("Bea is for Business" and "Bea is for Business: The Party-Planning Venture") are early reader style books that will appeal to 1st through 5th graders. Bea is a persistent, smart, and likable protagonist with a supportive and encouraging family. The two subsequent books in the series are chapter books (which are not as winsome as the first two). I can't wait to see what business ideas my girls come up with after reading this upbeat series.

Will you be adding any books to stockings this year? Which ones?
