Someday (Athenuem Books, 2007), written by Alison McGhee and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, is a nostalgic picture book from a mother's point of view as she watches her baby become a child, then a young woman, and then a mother. The book's tone is sweet and serious, gently reminding parents that time passes by in the blink of an eye. It is, in many ways, a picture book for adults.
Reynolds' illustrations are charming and fit well with the tender tone of the text. Even the font - the scribbly, almost-cursive handwriting - reminds the reader that the book is really a heartfelt letter from a mother to her daughter.
81 Amazon reviewers give this book a solid 5-star rating and I can see why. It's sentimental and moving (but, I should add that it might be a little too tragic/frightening for wee ones since the book ends on a rather sad note).
