Christmas Gifts for Children

Christmas Gifts for Children 1

We're convinced that many children get far too many toys at Christmas. Far better for the imagination would be a wonderful book. Other good gift ideas are clothing in the next size up or arts & crafts tools that encourage creativity.

Following are some excellent picks for kids (ages 3-12).

Boxcar Children Boxed Set

Christmas Gifts for Children 2

Originally published in 1924, this classic series holds timeless appeal. Starring four orphaned children who are polite, industrious, intelligent, and kind, the stories especially good for early readers (grades 2-6). The author intentionally uses simpler vocabulary to ensure comprehension by children reading on their own. Though the scenarios are highly unlikely and the children are almost inhumanly pleasant, the books retain a certain charm all on their own. Young children will enjoy reading about the adventures of other children who are faced with difficult situations and meet them with hard work and hopefulness.

A Child's Garden of Poetry

Christmas Gifts for Children 3

Originally produced for television in 2011 by HBO Studios, this 30-minute film is a wonderful celebration of poetry. Watch as classic poems like "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "Hope is The Thing with Feathers" by Emily Dickinson are read aloud and set to animated illustrations. In between each poem is commentary by a child (ages 6-8). A stunning piece of work. I'd love to see this concept expanded into a series.

Thank You Notes by Meri Meri

Christmas Gifts for Children 6

What better way to inspire a grateful heart than to provide some super fun thank you notes under the tree? Meri Meri offers ultra-cool options with great embellishments. The Pretty Princess one is sure to win the hearts of any little girl. Boys will probably appreciate the playful scariness of the Skeleton Pirate cards.

Tea Collection Clothing (Newborn - Size 12)

Christmas Gifts for Children 7

ANYTHING from Tea is a good pick. The clothes are soft, comfy, modern, unique, and global-inspired. The SALE section is an especially great place to browse around. Our three girls are wearing pieces from the Flora Fest collection in the above photo: Flora Fest Twirly Dress,  Flora Fest Romper, and Sparkle Stripe Leggings.

Coloring Books by Dover Publications

Christmas Gifts for Children 9

Kids who love putting crayons to paper will be thrilled by the detailed pictures in the educational coloring books by Dover. Learn about Musical Instruments, America's First Ladies, American Presidents, Art Museums, Great Composers, or a number of other topics. Each page features one picture and text with additional information. Grown-ups will want to get in on the fun too! (Note: We wish the illustrations were a bit more detailed and artistic, but...we love the concept in spite of some of the less interesting drawings).

  1. I LOVE the Child's Garden of Poetry, and we used to have the wiki stix and I forgot about them in the move! I have no idea what I'll be getting my kids this year- they have everything already it seems. Probably more Legos and maybe a laptop for the boys to share? Not sure yet!

    1. Isn't that DVD outstanding? I enjoyed watching it right along with the girls. Beautiful words read by beautiful voices. :)

We also recently checked out "Classical Baby: The Poetry Show" from our local library and enjoyed it immensely: http://amzn.to/Ve912F. (Same producer).

  2. We are also big fans of building toys that encourage lots of creativity like legos, wedgits, snap circuits jr, etc. We've found books by Sean Kenney encourage different structures- they're not step by step books, but rather encourage your child to use what legos they have to build different things.

  3. Thanks, I am going to pick out a couple of the sticker books. We limit the Christmas presents to 3 (wise men) and try to select fun, learning ideas, and games. I have been trying to find some sticker or magnet books so these will be great. And I just ordered Annabelle a couple of tea collection dresses yesterday. Lastly, I ordered a microscope from DiscoveryKids that comes with 12 slides of insects. It might be a good idea to order a nicer one to view your own discoveries from outside. For boys, the legos (duplos for toddlers) are always great for building, magna tiles also might be a good idea. Sometimes, I purchase the colorwonder markers or paints, a little cheap and disposable, but fun and no mess / stains if you are at a relatives house!

    1. Wonderful picks! I bet Annabelle will love the microscope. Kayla is really into science these days so that kind of present would be right up her alley!
