Do you hear what I hear?

Do you hear what I hear? 1

It's the sound of two little girls, safe and snug, tucked in their beds after a day of picnicking at the park.

It's the whhrrr-whhrr-whhrr of the dishwasher running in the kitchen.

It's the sound of pages turning in a book.

I have three books that I just checked out from the library that are calling my name (FYI - I haven't started reading them yet) - The Woman Who Attracted Money, The Dream Manager, and Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages.

What books are on your nightstand?

  1. I love reading. I read novels over informational books. I just finished reading Francine Rivers' Mark of the Lion series....and while I typically don't like Christian fiction, these books really captivated me...especially the first one. I am now reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. People keep telling me I need to read it. Before that was Pride & Prejudice (again)...that is one of the few I will read and re-read. Before that was Gone with the Wind. I typically read before I go to bed...it's how I 'wind down'.

  2. Do audiobooks count? My iPhone has A Sting of Pearls (Finding Humor in Life's Daily Challenges) and A Woman After God's Heart just waiting for me. I'm reading Leadership and Self-Discipline with my team at work, and I have a few Carol Higgins Clark mysteries sitting on top of my bookcase in the office.

  3. Those are some beautiful sounds to hear. I hear the click-clack of the baby swing, my little guy's tiny snoring, and soon to hear the sound of my microwave telling me my tea is done.

  4. I just finished reading FIREWORKS OVER TOCCOA, which I loved! This morning I started KNIT THE SEASON from the Friday Night Knitting Club Novels.

  5. Stephanie,

Let me know what you think of The Dream Manager. I was so inspired by it. Just the other night, my son picked up his dream journal and added to it..."Be a state wrestling champion." He's only nine and just started wrestling. It was great to see him dreaming.

Right now I'm reading Grooming the Next Generation for Success by Dani Johnson. Can't put it down!

    Hugs,
    Genny

  6. I'm reading the bible right now. The kids need new books, so this reminds me I should take off to the library today!

    Your Friend,
    Nell

  7. Right now the only book I have on my nightstand is a very under-opened Bible. I really need to open it....badly.

  8. A new book about motherhood by Amy Wilson, called "When Did I Get Like This?" Hilarious so far. I'm also reading Jill Savage's "My Heart's At Home."

  9. I just picked up The Unprocessed Child (Living Without School) from a friend yesterday and am also reading through Better Basics for the Home(Simple Solutions for a Less Toxic Living). Happy Reading! :)

  10. I don't have a night stand... but a basket by my bed with about 10 books I want to read! Never enough time. But right now I'm working my way though Tosca Reno's clean eating for families book! Love it!

  11. I just picked up The United States of Arugula: The Sun Dried, Cold Pressed, Dark Roasted, Extra Virgin Story of the American Food Revolution" by David Kamp for book club next month but haven't started reading it yet.

  12. Ooo...quiet reading time. Now that's a nice sound. Mostly I've got pregnancy books on my nightstand....Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, The Thinking Woman's Guide to Childbirth, and The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.

  13. I'm in the midst of several books -- Henci Goer's The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth, a guide to hiking with children in New England, and The Likeness by Tana French. I just purchased a pile of books at my local library's booksale, and have quite a bit of reading to lookforward to. Happiness is a tettering pile of books waiting to be read!

  14. Ooh, I love posts on books, I am currently reading So Long Insecurity by Beth Moore. About half way finished with it, it's exactly what I need to be reading right now!

I recently finished The Help, and then I read Precious (Push) by Sapphire in one evening. I love to read and I'm always looking for something new to read, thanks for the ideas, they all sound really good!

  15. I just finished 'The Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins, and thought it fantastic in that Harry Potter-fast-page-turning-exciting-prose way.

Also plugging through Silvia Plath's poetry for our April book club selection. It's poetry month!

Also, my hubby is into graphic novels all of a sudden, and we both read 'Blankets'--a fantastic illustrated memoir. Anyone who grew up in the evangelical church might relate to it.

  16. I have to admit....sheepishly....that I read through the Twilight series within a week, a few weeks ago....

I am taking a break from reading at the moment, to catch back up on my laundry and other things that were neglected:)

  17. The OED book sounds really entertaining. I've requested it from my library.

On my bookshelf right now: David Nasser A Call to Grace, Enid Blyton The Naughtiest Girl is a Monitor, Shapes by Philip Ball, Causing Chaos with Jeremy James, Crossing Stones by Helen Frost, Dr. Sylvia Rimm's Smart Parenting, Discipline without Distress by Judy Arnall.

The last book is driving me crazy. I really love parts of it but completely disagree with at least half of it. And also I keep reading things where she gives an analogy that I relate to so poorly that I can't concentrate on her point. For example: How would YOU like it if you called your friend to complain about your marriage and she gave you a timeout? My response? You shouldn't BE complaining about your marriage to your friends in the first place and if my friends started doing that I would be so, so uncomfortable with that.

    Anyway...

  18. Sounds like a wonderful night! We had a weekend mixed with playing outside, seeing Grandpa and Grandma, volunteering for kids with special needs, and for some reason, my 16 month old took super long naps. He isn't sick so I'm wondering if it's a growth spurt? Anyway, I was trying to get into Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout but couldn't get interested. I figure my reading time is too limited to try reading something I don't enjoy, so I'll be trying something else out tonight.

  19. Nothing on the night stand this week. Need to make a trip to the library this week.

My oldest is at school (after last weeks spring break) and the littles are playing/watching a DVD while I do some work.

  20. I have so much stuff next to my bed...the most current book I read was The Silent Gift. My mom and Michael Landon Jr. co-wrote it and it was great! I also have a woman's devotional that I read every night!
    Loving your blog still!

  21. I used to gobble up books like one would drink water. But after my little Lucy was born it's been put on the back burner a bit. She's not a great sleeper at night so whenever I have the chance to read before bed I can't help but think I should be resting instead.

That said, I'm trying to be better about reading during the day. Especially during naps. Right now I'm about halfway through The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. It's good but it's taking me FOREVER to get through.

  22. It's morning so I'm hearing the sound of two sweet little ones eating breakfast together and sharing their "bities"

The furnace is running, the radio is silent, Hubby is still sleeping (works 2nd shift...) and I'm enjoying my cup of coffee with the computer on and getting ready to start the day.

I'm avoiding books for right now because I have some sewing projects I'm trying to finish up - if I start reading I don't do anything else, but I am going to the bookstore one day this week so I'm sure I'll pick up a new book for myself too!

  23. I love those kinds of sounds...the hum of a satisfied, happy household.

I just finished Buddhism for Mothers and am planning to listen to an audio book (The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova) soon. I like the idea of hearing a story before bed, even as an adult.

  24. No books on mine - I'm finishing up with my last grad classes & working on my thesis --- so my room is a book FREE zone!

I love reading but I'm getting burnt out!

  25. I loved Reading the OED! It's a fun read, and I enjoyed learning many quirky new words.

Currently on my nightstand: Missing Joseph, by Elizabeth George (good so far), and The Happiest Baby on the Block (haven't started yet). Current audio book: All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque.
