Family Movie Review: Magic Flute Diaries

Family Movie Review: Magic Flute Diaries 1From the acclaimed director of Anne of Green Gables...comes a new film meant to entice and captivate the musically literate. Based on the opera "The Magic Flute" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sullivan's newest movie release - "Mozart's Magic Flute Diaries" - tells the story of a young singer named Tom who falls in love with the mysterious woman who is cast opposite him in The Magic Flute. Tom's imagination carries him back to the 18th century to the grandeur and glory of Mozart's time, but he soon realizes that his "reality" holds just as much as suspense, romance, and intrigue as his daydreams.

Mozart's Magic Flute Diaries recently was awarded Best Family Film at the Staten Island Film Festival in Canada.

Family Movie Review: Magic Flute Diaries 2My husband and I watched the film after our daughter's bedtime several weeks ago. Although it certainly is clean and refreshingly devoid of sexuality, violence, or language, I wouldn't necessarily categorize it as a "family film" because the plot is a bit too serious and "grown-up" for young ones. The genre would best be described as "drama" or simply "opera." This film is truly for the classical music aficionado. Brimming with elaborate costumes, operatic humor, and a full dose of Mozart's musical masterpieces, The Magic Flute Diaries is not your latest blockbuster hit. What it IS is a tasteful piece of culture.

  5. "His reality holds just as much ... as his daydreams"... sounds like it plays off multiple layers of Mozart, the Magic Flute opera, AND the underlying performing arts group presenting the performance -- which means this should be quite a cultural stew!

  6. I have never heard of this DVD. It won an award in Canada for family films. I would love to see a good family film for a change.

  18. Anything Kevin Sullivan puts his hand to turns out wonderful. I've followed the production notes on this project from his MySpace page and am looking forward to seeing the final cut.

  19. Woah, the costumes look awesome in those stills. I really enjoy movies with cool costumes and if they have great music, they get super double plus points.

  20. I have always been curious about this opera, but since musicals are definitely not hubby's thing, I haven't had an opportunity to see it. Maybe if I bring it home in movie form it will be a little more palatable for him... or maybe it will just give him the opportunity to knock it out loud. Hmmmm... worth a shot anyways!
