Favorite recipes are meant to be shared

chicken-enchiladas-place-settingWhen I plan out my meals for the week, I typically first consult my trusty blue recipe box (it's nothing special - just a plastic little filing box with index cards in alphabetical order).

Inevitably, I opt to include at least one of our "top three" on my menu:

For sides, I usually choose roasted red potatoes, roasted zucchini squash, a garden salad, steamed veggies, dinner rolls, a loaf of homemade bread, canned fruit, or fresh berries.

Other easy meal favorites include: grilled chicken or salmon, angelhair pasta with basil, tomatoes, and avocados, baked potatoes, beef and bean tostadas, or a big garden salad with plenty of veggies and cheese. "Vegetable Night" is also a favorite in our house, where we cook up and eat - you guessed it - LOTS of veggies.

allrecipes.com logoWhen we tire of our favorites and I want to find a new recipe, I typically go to AllRecipes.com. It's really a terrific site because you can search for recipes by "category" (soups & stews, slow cooker, kid-friendly, etc.) or by "rating" (thousands of users rate recipes as they are submitted). I especially love the "Top 20" bar, which allows you to view the top 20 recipes in any one particular category. You can also "modify" recipes easily on the site to accommodate different size groups (choose your number of guests and the recipe will automatically refresh with the correct amount of ingredients).

We've discovered quite a few favorites on that site over the past few month...like this mouthwatering and ridiculously easy Grilled Salmon recipe (we ate this once a week for two months straight after we discovered it...it's so tasty and crumbly...you're gonna love it).

Or this Chicken Tortilla Soup recipe - warm, flavorful, and delicious.

And I musn't forget the chili recipes: we can't decide if Debdoozie's Blue Ribbon Chili or My Chili is better.

YOUR TURN: What "source" (website, cookbook, TV show, foodie blog, etc.) do you consult when you're looking for a new favorite recipe?

  1. It is funny you mentioned chicken enchalidas since I just asked hubby to make them tonight! I really LOVE his chicken enchalidas. I have also been blessed with a husband that loves to cook and it is his nightly job! But I can and do cook - I love to plan a big meal with friends and do everything myself. I use foodtv.com - I find about 90% of my receipes there.

  2. make sure you try their beef curry for the slow cooker (minus the jalepanos (sp?) yummy. I made it last night but since I was out of canned tomatoes I put carrots in instead and and everyone loved it

  3. I use Allrecipes.com website all the time. I really find it helpful to read the reviews of the recipes.

  4. When I want to cook something new, I buy something I don't normally cook and look up what Alton Brown would say about it. I also check thekitchn.com

  5. I have more cookbooks than I could list here because I love to cook and bake! Allrecipes is just great. I also enjoy several from the Food Network -- Paula Dean, Emeril, Rachael Ray especially! Thanks for these wonderful recipe sites! :-)

  6. I have used the allrecipes.com and recipezaar.com sites, but I also find some really good, easy recipes at bettycrocker.com and pillsbury.com. Those 2 are especially helpful for working in reverse. Meaning you know you have some chicken or hamburger, but don't really know what to make with it. You can enter in the ingredient you have and see what pops up. Very helpful!

  7. I like allrecipes.com and myrecipes.com. I have a subscription to Sunset magazine and a lot of the new recipes I try come from there...they happen to be affiliated with myrecipes. My other favorite source? Friends! I am forever asking "can I get your recipe?"

Here are a couple favorites that I think you might like.
-Peasant Stew from Cooking Light (we have made many variations of this...using chicken breasts, even ground beef. It can also be made on the stove by cooking it until the chicken is done ~1 hr:

-Spaghetti with white clam sauce from Sunset (quick and easy, but very elegant):

  8. I'm a total foodie, and I love to cook. One of my favorite go-to cookbooks is Everyday Food: Great Food Fast. It's a compilation of recipies from Martha Stewart Living. What I like best about it is that it is arranged by season. Since I try hard to cook seasonally - when produce is the freshest - this book makes it easy to get ideas. Most recipies are easy, fast, healthy, and contain only a handful of ingredients.

I also love getting The Splendid Table's e-newsletter (NPR) once a week. Lynne Rosetto-Kasper sends out a recipe along with variations on the theme. Since I am not what I would call an intuitive cook, I appreciate the suggestions she offers.

I could go on and on, but these are just two recipe sources I am enjoying right now.

  9. I am a huge food network junkie :) allrecipes.com is one I like. My mother in law of course :) I have Spain's most popular cookbook that I use a lot it is like their Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. but mostly we just eat fish and roasted veggies. amazon.com has the best whole grain couscous you can buy in bulk that we eat tons.

  10. Oh yeah just a tip, don't know if you already know this or not but pie pumpkins are super hard to cut, If you want to though, just put them on a cookie sheet in the oven on 350 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour and then cut them, they will be super easy. Stupid me did it the hard way first and cut them into sections put them in a bowl with a bit of water and in the microwave for 15 minutes, would have been so much easier if I had just known that before.

  11. Allrecipes.com is nice and I also go to Rachel Ray's website sometimes. Sometimes from other peoples blogs. If you want to make the best apple pie you have ever tasted though go here: http://www.myhomecooking.net/apple-pie/

I didn't know I could make something that tasted so good before I used this recipe! The pumpkin pie on her site is also very good. I haven't tried her other recipes yet though.

  12. I made your beef fajitas tonight and they were excellent.

I've been a member of AllRecipes.com since 2004. It's almost a joke now that when a friend asks me for a recipe, I direct them to this site. I also like http://www.MomsMenu.com.

Sometimes for menu planning ideas I take a look at Organizing Junkie's Menu Plan Monday carnival. (www.orgjunkie.com). Not everyone posts recipes but I still get plenty of ideas.
