If you've perused my "Favorites" page with all of my favorite blogs and websites, then you know that I'm a huge fan of the Sears family of pediatricians. They're "naturally-inclined" and not afraid to question the status quo...and they dole out medical advice that I can feel good about taking to heart.
In preparation for this post about the Exergen TemporalScanner, I decided to bring you some basic information about fevers - what is considered a "high fever," when to call the doctor, etc. - courtesy of the Ask Dr. Sears website:
ARE FEVERS DANGEROUS?
No. Many parents have a misconception that fevers are a bad thing and a sign that there is some serious underlying illness. This simply is not true. Fever is a normal and healthy response of the body to an illness. The body's immune system releases chemicals that raise the body temperature. This is part of the normal infection-fighting process.
WHAT TEMPERATURE CONSTITUTES A FEVER?
WHEN NOT TO WORRY
WHEN TO PAGE YOUR DOCTOR

To take your child's temperature quickly, painlessly, and comfortably, consider investing in an Exergen TemporalScanner. It's a "a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements." Just swipe the scanner across your little one's forehead (or your own)...and a temperature will appear in seconds (In fact, this method is so gentle that you could probably take your baby's temperature in his/her sleep). I just took mine and the display screen promptly told me that my temp is 98 degrees. I expect that the temperature is correct since the scanner has been proven to be more accurate than ear thermometers by a Harvard Medical School Study.
The scanners retail for between $30-$50 (depending on where you shop) and are available at Walmart, Babies R Us, Costco, and other big box shops.
WIN IT! One winner will receive an Exergen TemporalScanner. To enter, leave a topic-related comment on this post prior to Monday, February 16 at midnight (Don’t forget to follow the rules…all generic comments like “Enter me!,” “Love it,” and “Cool stuff!” will be disqualified.). * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.
*UPDATE* The winner is #148 Bess. Congratulations!
This is the one we use and I love it. Caneasily take her temp while she's sleeping. And if I can't get to her forehead I just put it behind her ear and hold down the button likeu would when swiping the forehead until it's done beeping. Not quite as accurate but def still let's me know if she still has quite a fever or not.
Would love to have the Exergen TemporalScanner when my 2 grandsons spend the night. Thanks.
The Exergen TemporalScanner sounds very nice! I could definitely use this great prize!
What a great idea to get an accurate temperature without having to put something in a wriggling kid's ear. I would love to have this. It would also help my husband who has trouble keeping a regular thermometer under his tongue.
easy as pie to use
I embarrassed myself once at the walk-in clinic because my faulty thermometer said I had a 106 degree temperature. Maybe next time I have fever issues, I'll be able to save myself from that...
My daughter cries just at the though of having her temperature taken.
I would love to win this thermometer especially since I don't even have one to take my temperature right now. And I have always wanted one like the one you are giving away especially since it is so easy to use. This is a great giveaway. Thanks.
I have never used a temporal scanner, but I would like to try it.
My sis just had a baby. She'd love this!
This sounds great, I'm sure my son would appreciate it more than a rectal thermometer!!
I have been using the ear on and would love to try this kind. My 5 month old is not fond of having is ear messed with. I would love something more accurate for his age.
I have never used a temporal thermometer!
I have bben hearing alot about them & really would love love love to try it!
The kids always throw fits when I try to take their temp. They bite it or spit it out. I bought the Ear one but it did not work well.
Hello .. I like that the scanner is supposed to be more accurate than an ear scanner , so thats neat and would like to be entered, ty. skyxsky27(at)gmail.com
I would love to have this. We still use an oral thermometer and my daughter just cannot seem to sit still or keep her mouth closed when we are trying to take her temperature.
We used to have one of these, but it broke. Thank you
I really like the non-invasive aspect of this... plus those darn ear thermomators can be a pain as well!
Thanks
I would use this for the whole family. Nobody wants to try to keep a thermometer in their mouth when they are sick. This is a great improvement.
rlgrady[at]yahoo[dot]com
This would be great for my new goddaughter. I have a hard time taking her temp and this would be awesome to have. Thanks for the chance!
sherri419 at gmail dot com
that looks like a really nice thermol scanner i have never tried these type but i hear from a friend they are great :)
Goodness... Lil kiwi has had her temp taking so many times at the hospital and dr visits that it's a BATTLE now... She knows as soon as she see the thermometer what is going on... I have thought about getting a different thermometer so that maybe it won't be so difficult for her ok or me...
Fevers always scare me....the only time my son really had scary fevers was when he was little and he had a vaccine reaction and when he had roseola. Yikes! And trying to take a proper temperature on a fussy, sick baby is no fun!
i would love to try the temporal thermometer. my 2 yr old hates having her temp took
I love that this is the kind they use in the doctors office. I always wondered how it actually worked.
madamerkf at aol dot com
They used this on my mom at the hospital the other day before her surgery and I thought that it looked rather handy. Wasn't sure I wanted/needed to spend the money on one, though. But I DO need a thermometer. As I posted elsewhere, the only one we seem to have left right now is an old mercury rectal....
I'd like this for my sister in law!
Excellent device and very easy to use, especially for the new mom and she'll be the one very soon!
Thanks for the chance :)
This would be very useful to tell what my son's actual temp is....too often we use the feel his forehead method which I know is not good! Thanks for the chance!
I would really like to own one of these. Right now, I have two under the tongue thermometers - one regular and one digital. I've owned them for probably 15 years and I've been wondering if they even read the temperature correctly any more.
I struggled so much when taking my children's temperature with a rectal thermometer when they were little! I wish I would have had this, but at least my grandkids can have one!
I would love to try the Exergen TemporalScanner. It would make it so much easier than the rectal one I have been using. It would also be more accurate.
Thank you!
janetfaye (at) gmail (dot) com
my dd has the flu right now and it is so difficult to take her temperature with the traditional under-the-arm method...this would be so much easier in the future:) thanks for the info on the product AND fevers:)
[email protected]
thanks!
Thanks for this information. I need to replace my thermometer. This looks like a good one to try.
this would be wonderful...getting my kids to sit there patiently, can well stress my patience...what a great giveaway!
This would be so helpful to take an infant's temperature.
ohhh i would love to have one of these. my two year old hates thermometers. however, my doctor uses these on him and he doesn't mind at all!
I can never figure out any thermometer. One try it says 75 the next 108. I'd love one that works!
What a great invention. I won't have to struggle anymore trying to take a child's temperature.
Nice! Thanks for the offer!
Sweet
I remember years upon years ago I saw one of my husbands friends use it on her daughter and I thought..wow how nice...I think I would love to try this, it would certainly be easier than trying to keep a thermometer in the 4 year olds mouth or putting it under his arm and the rest of the children refusing to use that thermometer.
I still have the old ear thermometer that I bought 18 years ago. I'm afraid it no longer works very well. This would be great for the family.
We haven't bought a new thermometer in eight years! I'd love to try a temporal one since we have a new baby on the way.
My four and 7 year olds hate to have their temp taken orally, it always seems to gag them. I have resorted to underarm which I know isnn't very accurate, so this would be great!
This would be perfect for our baby. I would love to win it.
I've seen these thermometers in the hospital and they are so convenient especially for kids.
I love the temporal scanners. They are great thermometers.
These are great facts. THanks
I have seen these electonic thermometers before and always wanted to try one. What a great opportunity!
Oh wow, how much easier that would make taking temperatures! A lot nicer for the poor sickie too, to not have to be poked at or hold a thermometer under their tongue.
This would make taking temperatures so much easier. Thank you for the giveaway!
They use these in the ER here I would love to have one
I'm a nurse. I'd call the doctor if the fever was over 101 especially in a small child-just my opinion as I was very cautious with my children
This looks great have 3 boys under 10 here and a worried mom so would be great to win
I've loved our Exergen Temporal scanner! It's absolutely awesome for when the kids are sick and you're paranoid when they're sleeping! You don't ave to wake them and you don't have to poke them in the ear!
I am always having to fight with my youngest son to take his temp so this would be so wonderful!
I have never heard of this before! Very neat though! We are anxiously preparing for baby #2 to arrive. The scheduled csecton is Feb. 23
I never heard of this before today. My son has a developmental delay and is orally sensitive. He would so welcome this over me trying to keep a thermometer in his mouth.
This is the coolest and best! Baby even hates when we put a thermometr under her arma dnt he screaming is so upsetting. This would take care of that and relieve the baby of stress which would relieve me!
I think that this would be such a simpler way to take the temp of a young one. They never like to sit still with a stick under their tongue.
Wouldn't this save a lot of hassle. What an awesome product. I hope that I win this. Thanks so much.
I just bought a new thermometer last night. My son has trouble with a regular under-the-tongue thermometer and a temporal scanner would be really helpful for us.
What a great product!
I'd love to Try the Temporal Thermometer! With a squirming and squiggly 21 month old it's hard to get an under the arm reading, and there's no way she'd allow a rectal reading! This would be easy and I can cuddle her while doing it! Thanks
It is so challenging to take the temperature of a baby-toddler with a regular thermometer. It would be so nice to just instantly read the temperature by going across the forehead. Non-invasive and little-one friendly!
My sister is such a hypochondriac I'd love to give this to her were I chosen as the winner! She's always thinks she has a fever when she falls ill, esp. during the winter months. Feeling hot is one thing, but a persistent fever is another. This tool would put her worries to rest. Maybe she could use it for her future children as well! Thanks for the entry!
sounds like great technology!
[email protected]
I would love to try this!! My son tends to run high fevers and I always feel really bad about taking his temperature rectally when he already doesn't feel good!
chrisandamyward(at)comcast(dot)net
Thanks for another great giveaway! I would love to give the thermal thermometer a try! it seems like such an easier way of getting the temp of the lil' ones. Though i do have to say, after all these years of using regular thermometers, one has to wonder, if this one really is as accurate. I think this will be something great for someone who might be like me, and just a little unsure about the accuracy thing still.
I think these are a great advancement. What person of any age wants a typical thermometer stuck anywhere?
I would love this. I could have really used this a couple of months ago when all of my kids got sick.
When my five year old son was a baby, I brought him to the ER once for a bad case of croup. At the time they were in the process of testing the temporal thermometer as it was not available yet for retail. I thought it was such a great idea and so uninvasive and I still do.
I would love to own one!
My younger son is autistic, and can be violently sensory-defensive about being intruded upon or held down. When he was in the Trauma center earlier this month with a broken arm, he didn't even blink when they swept one of these across his forehead -- which bodes well for future use and acceptability.
I would love to have this thermometer. It looks easy to use and very accurate. Anything that helps my LO be healthy is something I need.
This thermometer sounds much easier to use than the others. I hate under the tongue - children just cannot hold it there. Rectal is horrible to use for me and the kids. I love that this one is proven accurate too.
Sometimes I find it hard to take my child's tempature- under the tongue(they can't leave it there long enough & in the ear is ok-but not when they always have an ear infection...I would love to try this...
smh13033atyahoodotcom
I would love to try this! It seems like it would be so much easier than trying to use a rectal thermometer on the baby!
I would really like to try a temporal thermometer. I still have an old fashion one - in fact I think my thermometer is about 20 years old.
I could use this thermometer in our family. Our cheap digital ones don't work very good and the kids get fevers from time to time.
terrific giveaway
I never heard of this kind of thermometer, but I would like to try it.
this is so much more fast, accurate, and convenent
I've always used an armpit thermometer. The Pediatrician thinks that it is the most accurate. I would like to gift this to my sister in law, who has her first child.
Acurate and easy to use thermometer
I would love to try this product
This would be awesome. Our third baby is due soon and that would make it so much easier to take temperatures - when they're sleeping?! Love it.
This would make life so much easier when my childen are sick. Sounds like a truly wonderful product.
What a great product. I like that it takes a child's temp painlessly and quickly. Thanks.
I'm confused at the comments, you can't purchase mercury thermometers anymore. All of them at least have digital output or are comprised of the single use disposable strips. I'd love to have this - you can never have enough.
Wow, no struggles over a rectal thermometer? What a great idea! And the price is surprisingly low.
I remember when they started coming out with these and those ear thermometers, they were $80 - $100. $30 sounds like a great deal to me.
Sounds easy to use.
This would make temperature-reading so easy! Very handy.
This would be so great to have-I hate wondering if the armpit read is accurate, and of course in the mouth of a 22 month old is not accurate, and I just cannot take her temperature any other way, so I would really like this-thanks for the chance!
this looks like a great contest, please enter me.
thank you.
Seeing as I have 4 kids, I could put this to good use. Taking my youngest son's temp is horrible. He hates to be held down so I can try taking it under his arm.
It's difficult to tell a baby "Hold this under your tongue until I take it out."
I love this! Modern technology is so amazing! It would be so much easier taking temperatures with this instead of trying to shake down a glass thermometer.
braaisjo at gmail dot com
I'm pretty good at guestimating my kid's temperatures by hand. Comes from lots of practice, but I'd love this thermometer, to make sure of the results!
Not having to put something in a body oraface would maybe eliminate a lot of screaming around here.
Totally fabulous product! It is so annoying to have to sit with a regular thermometer in your mouth forever when you have a cold or the flue, with your nose stopped up so you can't breath right. Eeew.
seattlevess at gmail.com
Wow! This Exergen TemporalScanner would be an excellent tool for my family. Thank you! :-)
My kids are always trying to play sick. This would help prove that they are not.
My kids would really thank me for using this type of thermometer! Anything that makes being sick a tiny bit more fun is a great idea.
this seems so easy to use would love to win it thanks.
we have an ear one and I never seem to use it right, it takes a few tries and most time I end up using a regular one under the arm
I have never even heard one of these. I have always been of the notion that most fevers should not be treated with any anti-pyretic. Fever is the body fighting some kind of bug, it is counterproductive to tamp down that immune response.
Handy to have - please enter me.
Enter me please
My youngest had a low-grade fever this week -- and though it never developed into finite symptoms or a trip to the doctor (they don't consider it a fever till it's above 100.4), I still took her temp around the clock. I had to pin her down in my lap in front of Dora to make the thermometer to stay under her arm for 3-4 minutes -- one of these would make things so much easier!
Thanks for the chance,
Megret
I have wanted a temporal scan thermometer forever but the budget has never allowed it yet. This would be great to win.
I never thought that the ear thermometers were very accurate. I would love to try this one.
This would be amazing to have with my 1 year old who will not be still enough for me to take his temperature the old fashioned way! Thank you for the giveaway!
how nice to just swipe the scanner across your forehead, great idea for sick kids
This is so great. Big improvement from the originals, haha. I have a 4 month old and it's not the easiest thing taking his temp so this would be wonderful
I've heard so much about it. I'd love to give it a try.
This is the thermometer we use, I love it. My sister has a new baby boy and I'd love to get this for her (just haven't had a chance to) so I'd be thrilled to win it!
Great contest, please enter me. This would come in so handy.
My daughter's pediatrician uses this, and I always thought it was so cool! No more rectal or under-the-armpit stuff. :) Thanks for the chance to win!
This would be great for my godson
Please, enter me, great prize!!! I would love to win this.
I am expecting my first child this year, and I would love to use a thermometer like this.
This would be fantastic, my little guy refuses to sit still to get his temperature taken.
I use these at the hospital, it's not very reliable
It would be great gift to give my daughter for her newborn to be. Oh the ways of telling a babies temp. Been there, done that.
Girl, can I just tell you how many thermometers I've tried?! I never seem to find one that is easy, quick and ACCURATE! Nothing bothers me more than a thermometer that gives me different readings back to back. I would like to give this one a try. Maybe it'll finally be the one that works.
My granddaughter just had a baby boy, and as far as I know, does not have an infant thermometer as yet. We were actually discussing different types a couple of days ago and she said she would like to have one of these--so, would love to be able to give it to her!
Our doctors office uses these for the kids. They are awesome! I would love to have one!
When my son was in the NICU, we had to take his temp. using a digital thermometer in his tiny armpit. I have never had to take a reading rectally. (phew!) But, now my son is 4, he HATES the ear thermometers and we can't get an acurate reading when we put one in his mouth. This would a great tool to have! Thanks for the giveaway!
I love that it is quick AND accurate. The one I currently use is an ear one and my kids hate it.
I agree, fevers are a body's healthy response to illness, but they still make me nervous . . .
My daughter is terrified of the thermometer for an unknown reason, but this may actually be able to come near her without screams!
So yeah, this would come in handy because sometimes I can get my son to hold the thermometer under his tongue... and sometimes I can't!
These are the best thermometers. When children are sick the last thing they want is to be poked and prodded at. Thanks for the giveaway.
Very great review. It is so hard to take a child's temp. Trying to keep a thermometer under their tongue to get a accurate reading is a pain. I love the fact that the Exergen TemporalScanner still gives you a accurate reading without the hassle. Thanks for the giveaway:)
My grandson is autistic. Trying go get him to cooperate with an oral or aural thermometer is never successful and I'm afraid he will be hurt in the process. This is an extraordinary tool that would make all of us more comfortable taking his temperature.
i would love this for my grand kids
I wish they had something like this when my kids were litte. How much more accurate and calming a good reading can be. My niece has just announced she will be having a baby in August. I would love to give her the top of the line themometer for her baby. Thanks for a great giveaway!
Our cheapo thermometer just recently broke and I had no way of telling my fiance's temperature. I never bought a new one, so we could really, really use this! Thank you so much for offering this giveaway! eyeslikesugar [at] gmail [dot] com
Could use one of these here at school to self diagnose.
Would be great to have one of these to help care for the physical well being of our family.
These are fantastic!
These are soooooo neat! We would love to have this for our family
These look faster, easier and much more convenient than a traditional thermometer! I would Love to try this!
[email protected]
Wow this is cool! I didn't even know they had something like this. I like that the scanner has been proven to be more accurate than ear thermometers by a Harvard Medical School Study. Thanks!
THis seems like the way to go, fast and easy without the fuss or muss. Just what a Mom needs when a little one is burning up with fever and is fussy and miserable. Especially since I am usually trying to take the temp in the middle of the night while groggy and worried and frazzled.
This looks alot easier than a regular thermometer.
This thermometer looks easy to use, which is great when you have a fussy child. :0
Sounds like a great idea - we could use this!
This would be the thing to have when you have little ones around... enter me too plz.
My 3rd grader hates school and is always trying to play sick. This would help proving he does not have a fever much faster.
so great!
This looks so much easier and more comfortable then the old method of under the tongue. I wish these were around when I was sick as a kid.
This would be very useful, especially during those times when I suspect my child my have a fever but don't want to disturb or disrupt him by undressing him and undiapering him in order to take it rectally.
one of my colleagues used this in the outpatient clinic and i was instantly coveting one. i'm still using the old fashioned oral/anal probes which wear out of battery juice in less than 6 months. anyway, i have a 16 month-old who frequently sports fevers (teething and colds...which tend to happen simultaneously), and I could really use a working thermometer...and this one i might actually get an accurate read instead of fighting with my toddler.
I saw this advertised in a magazine just the other day and once again thought it would be nice to try. My favorite thermometer right now is the digital rectal thermometer I have which, for some reason, makes me feel like I get an accurate reading for my son. Your little reference chart for temps was nice, too...I'm always forgetting what is "normal" when in the midst of a mini-crisis with a crying baby!
I'd love to try this the next time a fever pops up! I think all the new technology is so interesting.
I've seen these and they seem like such a great thing for a new mom.
I've always wanted one of these. My kids are getting a bit older, but they still aren't keen on taking their temperature when they don't feel well. I'd love to just scan them and know.
THanks!
My neighbor has one of these. It works really nice - just like it says. Swipe across the forehead and in seconds you know the child's temperature. Unfortunately, I'm still using the old style bulb type.
This would be great. I can never get an accurate temperature reading from my two little ones.
[email protected]
This would be great for when I need to take Gracie's temp when she is sleeping. Thanks for the chance.
The school that I work at has a thermometer that is very similar to this one, and it is so handy - and very acurate, too! I'd love to win one of my own for home! Thanks so much!
Nice giveaway. Count me in
Ohhh, I have to win this for my daughter and my grand children. My daughter always complains that her readings are always off.
I also wanted to add that I remember my first daughter getting a high fever around 9 months to a year. It was super high but we handled it. At this time she also had a blocked tear duck for many months. When she woke up after the fever her tear duck had opened - I truly think the fever caused it to open.
I would love a thermometer like this one. For babies I do the in the butt but now both kids are too big for that so I just guess since they won't hold it under their tongue and under the armpit is not very accurate.
Really need this!
good one no muss no fuss
I have always wanted a temporal but never gotten one, the ear ones don't work with my infant and you try to get a 17 mth old to stay still long enough for an armpit reading. I would really love to try this product
[email protected]
This is wonderful. With three kids, it seems like this would be a lot more sanitary than sharing a thermometer that goes in their ears. Plus, no squirming for this one. Thanks!
My kids HATE having their temperatures taken. My 12 year old is ok, but my 7 year old and 2 year old make it seem like torture. LOL
This would be fab to have around the house.
Thanks!
My friend was at the hospital for an outpatient thing and they used one of these temperature gadgets! I'd never seen one before - very impressive, and a great tool to have around the house!
I would love to try this! A swipe of the forehead would be so much easier. I've tried the ear thermometer and haven't been impressed by the accuracy.
this would be perfect for when my niece is sick, she doesn't like to sit still long enough or keep the thermometer under her tongue. she'd rather spit it out and hide under pillows.
I have never SEEN a temporal thermometer! My littleone would love you for this!
how awesome my son hates the thermometer i have
I like to take the temperature under the arm and compensate.
...and here I thought the ear thermometer was the greatest thing.
with two little ones it would come in real handy
Must have! Definately could use this!
geat to use on my grandkids.
Where can I purchase a TemporalScanner?
They are available at Wal-Mart, Babies R' Us, http://www.babiesrus.com, Walgreens, http://www.walgreens.com, Toy's R' Us, http://www.costco.com, and http://www.baby.com presently. Contact Exergen at 1-800-422-3006 or [email protected] if none of these are convenient for you.
This would be great. I have the ear type and my son screams when I use it. This would be much easier.
As a nurse, I think this is wonderful. Great for my grandchildren
I had never heard of this and it sounds wonderful. It reminds me of those infrared food thermometers that food inspectors use. This would make things so much easier with babies and small children who freak every time you try to do anything to them when they're not feeling well. thanks!
never used this but it looks simple
This would be great to use on my little grandsons.
lgrieser(at)sbcglobal(dot)net
currently my 3 yr old and 2 month old are running fevers. the TemporalScanner sure would be easier than armpit thermometer that i am having to do right now.
I saw one of these used in the nursery when our son was born a few weeks ago. It seems like a miracle after using that rectal thermometer on my daughter for so long. I'd love love love to win one for our personal use.
We've had the kind you stick in your ear for years which is easier than an oral thermometer. But still you're not sure if you've stuck it in your ear just right or not. A temporal scanner would be much easier.
I have never used this type of thermometer before. It would be great to have one. Thanks for the contest.
susan dot lockhart at gmail dot com
Oh this would be great. The old thermometers take forever and the kids get all antsy.
My kid's pediatrician uses this (or similar). I would love to have it at home so that we can really get an accurate and quick reading.
A good example of how technology can make life easier. Thanks for the giveaway.
I've never seen this before, but I would love to try it out!
great contest
This would be great. It is so hard getting my youngest to hold a traditional thermometer under his tongue long enough to get an accurate reading.
This would come in handy. I always have to fight with the kids to get them to leave the regular thermometer in their mouths long enough to get an accurate reading!
With the Exergen TemporalScanner you can get a fast reading to see if you have a fever.
we are seniors this would be great.
This would be a fantastic new baby gift.
These are so much nicer especially for babies!
Thanks for entering me! Great Contest!

Schweet!! I have never seen anything like this! We have tried the ear one, arm one, mouth one, forehead strip - nothing gives a reliable temp!
autumn398 (at) yahoo.com
This would be so nice to win. I currently use an in the ear thermometer and it is a fight to get my daughter to use it. I think this would be much easier to use.
Another great giveaway from you! I just seen this at the store the other day, and I thought that I would like to have it! lol! Thanks for the chance!
I can't help thinking of Star Trek's medical tricorder! Truly a neat gadget. I hate all kinds of invasive devices, and am thrilled that we now have an alternative to at least one.
This would be so much easier than the "old" way. Thanks!
great prize... many hospitals are using this
With 8 grandkids, this would be great to have! Kids hate regular thermometers and don't like the one poking in their ears, either. This one is so easy!
I'm always looking for a thermometer. It would be great to own this one.
This sounds like something we can use here. :)
Wish they had these when I was a kid. The last thing I wanted when I was sick was something stuck in the back of my mouth gagging me.
I always wanted one of these
I'd love to win!
We are so in need of a new thermometer. I keep wondering which one to get (many choices). Thanks for this review and contest.
We'd love to try one of these. We just went through a week of cold and fever with my little one and since the only reliable way to take a temp is, well, you know, it wasn't fun. I read that these are very accurate and would be a godsend the next time we are feeling bad.
I've recently heard about those thermometers and wanted to try one out. Thankfully, Levi has yet to run any really high fevers. I generally let the small ones that he has had just run their course.
My Wife would love this!
please enter me
I have never been good at reading the rectal thermometers or the ones that go under your tongue. This would come in handy as my son is a bit hyper.
my son refuses to take a thermometer in the mouth...leaving little other options until now.
would love to have one of these. My poor little guy hates the rectal temp taking and so do I!
hi, please enter me i would love to win this for my brats
Oh this would make things alot easier. With 3 children it seems we're always checking temperatures in this house.
this should be easier to read
Tristan doesn't understand how to use an oral thermometer and he's scared of the kind you put in his ear. Maybe this is just the type of themometer that would be right for me to use.
I would love to be able to take my baby's temp without having to wake her.
What a practical and kind way to read a family member's temperature. Wish they never got sick but they do sometimes and I try to help in the gentlest way.
Thank you for the contest. Your little girl is adorable and won't she have a lifetimes of happiness when her sister arrives!
I"ve seen this used in the hospital, and it's amazing!
Huh, never heard of it. But sounds like a useful and easy product :-)
I've never seen these before, but I think that this is great. I love that you only have to use it on the forhead and not insert it into the ear. What a great and very easy thermometer! Thanks for this giveaway.
I really came here becasue I didn't know what a temporal scanner was...neat. I could see this would be great to have.
My daughter gags with oral thermometers; this would be a good alternative.
I am definetaly a fan of the Sears'.
Anyway, just today I was thinking I really nedd to pick up a good thermometer. All I have is one that can be used rectally, under the arm or orally, but who wants to use one in other places after it's been used rectally!
I think temporal thermometer would be so much easier to use than ear ones.
Over the years, I've gotten pretty good at just 'knowing' the girls' temperature, based on touch and disposition. Still, when I have to take a temperature, I dislike both of the thermometers we have.
I've been resistant to buying something like this because I wasn't sure whether they were all that accurate and because the cost was prohibitive. Then, this fall, when we had to take Ina to the ER, they used this type of thermometer, and I figured, if it is good enough for the pediatric trauma unit, it's good enough for me! I would welcome the chance to win this and give it a try!
I have never used one either but it looks like it is a lot easier and I would love to try it.
I mostly use one that you point into the ear, but it is not supposed to be very accurate, so I use it just to get a base idea. If there is a fever, then I use a cheap digital one in the rear end... with a cover. And it is only used for that purpose.
I registered for the Exergen TemporalScanner this time around (due in 5 weeks) but didn't receive it at my shower, so I would love to win one.
Every time one of the kids gets sick (1 adn 3 yrs old), I think, we need a better thermometer. The readings on ours are so willy nilly. So, here's to hoping for this one. Looks like a great product.
As much as my daughter has been sick this winter, we could really use this.
I have probably three or four different types of thermometers. Last winter my son had like 7 ear infections and he always ran a super high temperature, around 105 under the arm. That made me incredibly paranoid about temperature and even now I'll find myself putting my cheek to his forehead just to be sure he's not hot. When he does have a temperature I like to use all methods to check it then. Unfortunately the one that should be the easiest (in the ear) is the one that works the worst. This sort of thermometer would be awesome for my paranoid temp checking self.
I've never used this type of thermometer myself but my pediatrician does. I think they're great.
I've never seen of these, but they look neat. It sure would be a lot easier to use on a squirming little tot instead of the old fashioned thermometers.
I would love to win this. My thermometer broke about a couple months ago. It was a plain digital one that you put in your mouth. My 3 year old wouldn't even sit still so I could take it under his arm. Thanks for the chance.
My newly married daughter just informed me (after a very nasal "I think I'm running a temperature" that they don't have a thermometer in their house, so obviously, this would make a great gift for her. Thanks for the giveaway.
I have never heard of this kind of temperature reader--where have I been? Thankfully fever free, but it would be nice to have.
This gizmo sounds a lot like those temperature scanners that the weather guys love to shoot at the frozen ground during winter to show us how cold it is outside and how brave (or stupid) they are for standing outside and broadcasting to us. All in all, I like the idea of it. I had putting that glass thing in my mouth, and the digital ones don't always work for me.
We have an Exergen temporal scanner and absolutely LOVE it. You just can't beat the speed and ease of use. I especially love that I can easily take J's temp when she's sleeping, if I'm worried. Since we already have one, I'd love to win this one for a baby gift for a friend who's expecting. Thanks for the chance to enter!
This would be a great way to tell temperatures instead of the old fashioned thermometer that goes in orally. Hard to read those as well. This one looks much better and easier to read. Hope to win. Thanks for the contest. Have a great day.
My daughter's pediatrician uses this type of thermometer. It appears to be pretty effective. I would love to own one. The tympanic thermometers are seldom used properly causing inaccuracy. When working in the hospital there were several times I got a temp of 102 or higher and the aide got 97 something a couple of minutes earlier. I know. . . scary!
I am also a huge fan of the sears website, very helpful articles. My daugter has had a febrile seizure before, I have seen the scary side of fevers, I would truly appreciate one of the thermometers! Thank you as always!
My granddaughter gets a lot of fevers, she always has. However, taking her temperature has always been a big in the you know what. This looks fab! Thanks for the chance to win!

We have an ear thermometer and I HATE it. Whenever my little guy is feeling down and I try to take his temp it gives me a new number each time. Lately I've just been using my own intuition on deciding whether or not we need to go to the doc -- most times not. In fact, the thermometer has been known to make its way into the toy box. That's how little I trust it. So I would love to win this more reliable version!
I am a pediatric emergency room nurse and we use temporal scanners for all our patients (with the exception of infants who get rectal temps) they work FABULOUSLY and I have parents ask me all the time if they can buy one. When your child is sick and fussy and generally miserable the last thing they want is something stuck in the ear or under their arm!! Every parent should have one of these thermometers!!!
Heard this advertised on the radio. I like the idea that you can take the child's temp even while they are FINALLY sleeping.
Finally, a thermometer that would actually be useful. My husband and I have gone through 3 thermometers in the past 3 years because either the battery does not work or we cannot bring ourselves to buy the "mercury" because of their toxic waste. Fevers have never caused me much worry (probably because I am not yet a mother) because I know they are the body's way of healing. Although, fevers that last longer than 2 days after home remedies, do worry me. Thank you for the Dr. Sear's website information, it's EXACTLY the type of webpage I am looking for!
my pediatrician uses this type of thermometer and it is so great the price of one has put me off from purchasing and I have been blessed so far that my little one hasn't been sick with anything other than the sniffles but one of these would be great to have around for the biggest baby in the house, yes I'm referring to the hubby!
I really get frustrated with the digital stick-them-under-the-tongue thermometers we have in our house. On the very rare occasions that I want to take one of my childrens' temperature, they hate it, and it's hard to get anything accurate. But I've never wanted to shell out money for something like this one, that I'd use so rarely. Still, I know it would save me a lot of trouble when it did come time!
There's only been a single time in my childrens' three lives so far that I've consulted a doctor for a fever. It was when my son was about 6 months old and on his second day of being really cranky with a fever. He was diagnosed with an ear infection and immediately prescribed antibiotics. I didn't feel quite right about it, and took him home to think about it before filling the scrip. Four hours later, he was completely back to normal, no more fever, no more crankiness. Like nothing was ever wrong. I've lost a lot of faith in consulting with doctors, since then.
I know it's uncomfortable to be sick, but I definitely believe in the ability of the body to heal itself under normal conditions. Since reading up on fevers, I've taken to watching the mood and temperament of a child with a fever before ever touching a thermometer. I probably only end up using a thermometer about once a year, now!
Ive never used one of these thermometers before but have seen them on tv and they look simple and easy to use! I d love to win this!
I have never used one of these before, but they have been used in the hospital on my son. It takes the extra ouch out of being sick
I've seen reviews on these before, and I just saw one at the new Walgreens the other day. I've never tried one, but I'd love it for its ease and non-evasiveness. The girls have had fevers in the middle of the night before, and it would have been lovely to check it while they slept. Right now if we have to check it, we jam something in their ear while they're sleeping. Needless to say, not their favorite. Thanks!
I would love to have this thermometer
We don't own this type of thermometer, and I guess I'm living in the Stone Age, because I really should get one. Hope I win it.
I just saw these at Walgreens. I wonder what kind of technology they use? I could really use one. I keep meaning to get one and then only really need it when I have to take a temperature....
Hey there - thanks for stopping by my place! I love my Exergen (so you don't need to enter me...) and my kids love it too - unusual for a thermometer!
I have never used a temporal thermometer. I've always gone under the tongue, in the armpit, or in the rectum. Even in the hospital. This is a new technology I'd love to try.
