FitFlops: Phony or Phenomenal?

I'm not big into fitness gimmicks and magic tricks - products that promise results with just the simple pop of a pill or a 5-minute investment.

The fact of the matter is I don't really need anyone to tell me "what works" when it comes to getting fit, losing weight, and being healthy. I already know that the solution is regular exercise and nutritious eating. Period. No DVDs, weight machines, fitness apparatuses, diet cookbooks, or gym memberships needed!

FitFlops: Phony or Phenomenal? 1That said, it is kinda fun to get a little extra assistance from a product. Take, for example, The FitFlop. According to the website, "FitFlop midsoles incorporate patent-pending micro-wobbleboard technology, to give you a workout while you walk."

Supposedly, these wonder shoes help tone and trim your legs, thighs, and buttocks - just by walking in them! The testimonies of dedicated FF wearers are numerous and quite positive. Some wearers proclaim that their muscles ached after just 30 minutes of wearing these babies. I wore my sandals around town this summer - for much longer than 30 minutes - with no aching muscles. Maybe I just have strong leg muscles...or maybe the FitFlops can't do exactly what they promise.

That said...

  • FitFlops are much more attractive than other fitness-inspired shoes I've seen on the market. The FitFlops actually look pretty normal and - dare I say it? - cute.
  • FitFlops are comfortable with a spongy base and wide straps.
  • FitFlops retail for about $50 (which isn't much more than your average sandal).
In Sum:
FitFlops: Phony or Phenomenal? 2Do I think your legs will look like the ones pictured after wearing FitFlops? Nope - not without exercise. Sorry to break it to you. Do I think that the sandals might add a little extra umph to your step (especially compared to a regular flat-as-a-pancake flip-flop)? Yes, I do. Do I think such an investment is worth it? I'll let you decide that for yourself...
WIN IT! One winner will receive a pair of Silver/Black FitFlop Walkstars in size US 6* (sorry, gals, I only have that size available). To enter, leave a comment on this post prior to Monday, October 20 at midnight (don’t forget to follow the rules). * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.
* A quick word about sizing: FitFlops are "designed to fit a standard-width UK foot" and this posed a bit of a problem for me. I typically wear a 6.5. I found that the 6's were too small, but the 7's were a bit too big. Hmmm...
*UPDATE* The winner is #130 Patti Sherman. Congratulations!

  1. I love fitflops, but even I have to admit that they're phony. They're very comfy, but they don't tone a thing! I still bought another pair this summer :)

  2. So I've heard so much about these and of course am really intrigued. I think of the seven benefits I'm most interested in challenging those hard to reach muscles. I'd try them! : )

  3. I'd love to try these, they're just my size! They're a bit out of my price range right now but I think they're really cute.

  4. These would be great! I am certain I will have gorgeous legs in 5 minutes of wearing them! :-)

Seriously, these sound like something I would love to try...and they are just my size! Thank you for this opportunity.

  5. These are the right size for my daughter and I know she'd wear them as she walks a lot and is concerned that she needs just a little extra help in the exercise department these days.

  6. I've recently lost alot of weight and at 48 my body doesn't bounce back into shape like it once did. I could use a pair of FitWalks to tone my calves. Besides, flip flops are about the only shoes I ever wear. They are SOoooo comfortable.

  7. I am dieting............. and reluctantly exercising too. Would love to show off some great legs SOON!!!!!! Please pick me!!

  8. I live in sandals and flip flops, which causes problems when you have to put your foot into regular shoes as I feel my feet are being cooped up. So wearing sandals or flipflops have really no support. So would love to try these.
Thank you again for another contest and a chance to win a great prize. Also without you and the hard work the contest would not be possible so a hats off to all your hard work.
    Thank you.

  9. I've seen these advertised and am very curious about them! I would love to try them and see if their claims work for me (I'll NEVER look like that picture, though -- not even surgery could do that for my short, fat little legs!!) Every little bit of muscle-toning helps. :)

  10. I have a client that wears these around the house and loves them. She looks great! That's enough for me to want to try them. :)

  11. Awesome! I saw these on TV and wondered if they really worked. I walk ALLLL over my Uni campus so I could really use that extra "something" in my step!

  12. I would love to get my hands on them and see if they help with the backs of my thighs....we all could use a little help.

  13. I have 2 pair of FitFlops and absolutely love them! Unfortunately, I'm a size 7 in them, but my mother-in-law would fit in the 6's and I know she would love a pair.

  14. These would be perfect for my sister! She has been wanting them. I like them too but they are not my size. I would be happier if she got them anyway.

  15. OMG, I was just saying how awful it was to have size 6 feet when every in the world has size 6 feet! Wait.. that might hinder me here too, oh well!

Hooray for size 6 and getting fit!

  16. Although I could not wear them, my feet are too big-my teenage granddaughter could wear them and she loves silver.

  17. These are so cute and are actually my size! I need all the motivation I can get to get excited about exercising and these shoes just might do the trick.

  18. I bought a pair 7s this summer and they are too big for me - I'd love to trade them for a pair of 6s. Then I can have a giveaway on my own blog!

I find them quite comfortable and spongy, but didn't really notice any sore muscles.... The workout came from trying to keep them on my foot due to the weird sizing.

  19. Some wearers proclaim that their muscles ached after just 30 minutes of wearing these babies. I wore my sandals around town this summer - for much longer than 30 minutes - with no aching muscles.

  20. I've heard about these before, and wondered what a real woman thought. I'm so glad you tried them out and let us know.
I'd love to have a pair, but, honestly, I won't be dishing out 50 buckaroos... BUT! I'd love to give my sister-in-law a that little spring in her step :) It'd be great for her back! And I'd score big props :)
