GIFT IDEA: a single cupcake or muffin

So...

  • your best friend just got a new job
  • your sister is going to be published for the first time
  • your coworker won an award
  • your child's teacher did something extra special

You want to do something fun, but you don't have a wad of cash or a lot of time.

Instead of sighing hopelessly and doing nothing, bake up a batch of muffins or cupcakes. Then, follow this great step-by-step, no-fail system.

1. Reach for a snazzy cupcake box ($3.19/pk. of 3 from Wilton).

  59. I really want this. I have been into baking and just started taking a cake decorating class. This would be a perfect birthday present to myself!

  60. I really like your ideas of how to package baked goods so they're like a real gift rather than just baked goods passed on. I like to give stuff like cupcakes as presents but I'm always concerned that they don't look like they're presented in such a way that they are nice gifts. I really like your ideas.

  61. This could be the start of new business venture. 1 cupcake at a time.(Hope I don't eat the profits.)

  62. Who doesn't love cupcakes? They are the universal good food for everyone. I love the idea of making them really personal as special gifts.

Those crumble top muffins you gals made look so yummy.

  79. I love new ideas for my grandkids, they love cupcakes and think when they come here they will be waiting for them

  80. I know cupcakes are kind of 'trendy' right now - but I can't help it, I'm totally sucked in! I see all the adorable cupcake-themed goodies in places like Target and Michael's, and I can hardly stop myself from squealing "oh my gosh, so cute!" in the middle of the store! I love cupcakes for gift-giving and get togethers. They're much more group-friendly than a full cake. Plus, there are so many adorable baking cups and decorations to choose from!

  81. this would be great for a birthday party. i'm a horrable baker. i can make cupcakes but not cakes. i have nothing to make cupcakes though

  82. I love cupcakes! My kids do, too, naturally, but it seems like I never have time to make dessert. Just getting a meal on the table is time-consuming enough! Maybe if I had this kit, I'd get some inspiration.

  83. I love to make cupcakes and have a hard time sending one with someone. These boxes would solve that problem.

  84. I love the individual cupcake boxes. Thats the perfect way to send those "no dessert, im too full's" home with a special treat!!

  85. I love making cupcakes and muffins. I would love to have your recipe for the crumble top muffins you and your little one made. Looks delicious!!

    thanks for the generous giveaway!

  87. I love cupcakes! For holidays, the kids don't really appreciate the pies that are a tradition in my family, so I make cupcakes and put them on that Wilton thing that looks like a Christmas tree and has places to put cupcakes on it. That's a big hit!

  88. Awesome Idea. I love the single boxes. I had to go get the recipe for the pumpkin muffins too. delish.

  89. I love cupcakes. The perfect way to enjoy cake in my opinion. You can do so many creative things with them and everyone loves them. Plus they are the perfect size for my kids

  90. For Special Occassions We Make Cupcake Cakes (Say that five times fast). This would be perfect for the upcoming birthday party we have.

  91. Love the little boxes. As someone else said, it's all about the presentation! Nice muffin pan, too -- mine are skanky :)

  92. My mother started teaching me to cook and bake (on my own I might add) at four years old. I love being in the kitchen. I prefer making chocolate chip muffins.

  94. That looks fun! I love baking for people, and the girls love to help by pouring things in and mixing with me. It would be a fun project, and cute to boot! :)

  95. Making a pregnant girl hungry! I love cupcakes, we have a couple of pans but that's it. I need to become a better cook. These look like a great idea though. =)

  96. Oh, I LOVE this idea!

And you have great suggestions for when to use it. It would be perfect for those "little" times when someone deserves big congrats but not necessarily a big gift.

I love baking, and I especially enjoy giving baked goods as gifts. This would make it so easy to give a cupcake!

  97. I love making cupcakes for my friends' birthdays. We usually go out to lunch and they are so easy to serve and eat. Plus they are cute and festive!

  98. A few years ago I became the victim of a brutal crime. Friends and family disappeared from my life. One morning a former co-worker {former because I could not work post-crime} brought me a box of goodies while on her way to work. In it were comfort-foods, and a specially decorated banana chocolate chip cupcake. I hardly knew this co-worker because we worked in different parts of the company building. Nontheless I shall always remember and cherish her thoughtfulness. Thank you for letting me share this memory with others.

  99. What a fantastic gift idea for friends and family who have a sweettooth or love to bake! I want my own! lol! Thank you for the contest!

  100. That is such a cute idea! Individual cupcakes would be a sweet (ha!) teacher gift, too... especially when your child has a bunch of teachers.

  101. My granddaughter ans I love to bake and we love to share our creations so we would love to win this. We have several wilson products but not the muffin pan.

  102. I would love these! I always make cupcakes for my BF's parents, but never have the proper cupcake holder. I usually just put them on a plate with tin foil on top. By the time they get them, the icing is all over the foil :(

    Good luck everyone :)

  103. I just tossed my old bent and dented cupcake tins bought when I got married in 1963! I could use a nice new one to make treats for the grand/greatgrandkids.

  104. How fun! I love muffins and I've been cooking lots with my 4-year-old daughter. I think she would have fun giving these away to her friends. We homeschool and cooking is a great way to teach early math skills.

  105. Cupcakes are so precious -- fun to make and fun to eat! It's not as calorie-laden as a boxful of cookies, either. :)

    Thanks!

  108. Cupcakes are one of my favorite ways to eat cake. :) I could practice my decorating skills too!

  109. What a cute idea, I know a whole bunch of people that would love a cupcake. It would be such a nice surprise for any occasion. Also, those pumpkin muffins that you made look really tasty, I may have to try those, too.

  110. i love how you categorized this post under "changing the world". i never really considered 'individual' cupcakes...i usually think big and bake a whole batch. but just think of all the people i could give one too if i separated it like that.
    the wheels are turning.

  111. I am about buy a House I would love these for my new kitchen so I can make cupcakes for my open house......

  112. I saw this post and immediately thought of my sister-in-law who loves making, eating, and giving cupcakes away. One of her dreams is to open a fun bakery. Then, I thought how neat it would be to win this and give it to her as a treat! Her husband passed away in February so I am trying to always find little things to just brighten her day or moment! I will have to keep all of this in mind! Thanks for sharing!

  113. These are super cute- my 16 year old daughter has gotten interested in baking & she would love these!

  114. I was just thinking about how many cool ideas these supplies could be used for. They could be used for my son's teachers or for the ministry at church where we bring meals to the sick and shut in. I only wish I would've though of this first.

  115. I have three kids and we love to make both muffins and cupcakes. Right now I have just one muffin tin and it only makes six, so it would be nice to win the one that makes twelve.

  116. My 10 year old is skilled at making awesome cup cakes. She makes some beautiful red velvet cupcakes that are super good.

  117. Oh my...you just totally appealed to my inner baker!!! I LOVE to bake, especially for other people. I used to send my grandmother cookies in the mail around Christmastime, but I never thought about giving treats as gifts to others. This is perfect!

  118. I bake cupcakes and muffins pretty often, either for my family or for my son's class at school. His class is always having a party or celebration of some type. Thanks for the chance to win!

  119. I bake all the time but never have any clever ideas for giving my baked goods to family and friends. This giveaway is so beautiful for such special baked goods. I would love to win this.

  120. Do you have that pumpkin recipe? That would be great! I have a small cakes cookbook that has recipes for just 2 or 3 at a time. I like it cause you dont have a ton around the house!

  121. I think giving a friend or loved one a special cupcake you made yourself as a gift is much bettr than giving them a whole big cake, especially if you know they're dieting. I mean this way they don't have a big temptation around, or a big cake that will go to waste. Your hubby and kids can eat the rest of the cupcakes you've made and not be grumpy that you've made and gave away a cake they've been staring at all day. It's a win, win situation, especially if you're on a tight budget.

  122. I recently found a recipe for Bananas Foster Cupcakes I really want to try. The plan is to buy cute packing, send them to loved ones & distribute them to neighbors, and only eat one of them! I have no will power when it comes to cupcakes. :)

  123. Great giveaway & thanks for including the recipe for the Crumble-Top Pumkin Muffins -- this is one I'll try for sure!

  124. What a fun idea! I'm sure between my kids and husband, the rest of the baked goods that don't go to friends would be eaten at home.

    Good job with the muffins!

  125. cute! I guess I'd rather receive the cupcakes than make the cupcakes...but putting them in such a cute container would make it fun and would definitely bring a smile to the lucky recipient :)

  126. Yum! We are HUGE cupcake connoisseurs at this house! Our favorites are red velvet and Sprinkles cupcake mixes!

  127. Too cute! I have friends who have been diagnosed a year ago and now again with breast cancer. What adorable thinking of you gifts these cupcakes would make. Many thanks.....Cindi

  128. Oh my gosh these are so cute! I love making things and giving them to people...even just for fun not an occasion. What a cute idea this is and I love the packaging. Also your pumpkin muffins look delicious, I am going now to take a container of my fresh pureed pumpkin from the freezer so I can make these later this week. Yummy!!

  129. Cupcakes have become very popular lately - although I've been a fan for years! I love all the recipes and ways to decorate them that are out.

  130. That is a great, thoughtful fun gift to give someone... and as a bonus, you will not clutter up their house with 'junk' since it is a consumable.

  131. I think gorgeous cupcakes are a great gift. When it's not summer and I don't want my house hot, I bake often for friends. Thanks for the giveaway~

  132. I think that homemade gifts are always special, but how much nicer it would be to have special packaging for the gift's from one's kitchen! Lovely idea!

  133. I absolutely love cupcakes and cannot wait for Sprinkles, the cupcake bakery, to expand to Chicago. In the meantime, I will have to bake my own!

  134. Okay, this is just PERFECT! I recently got a copy of the new Martha Stewart Cupcake book and have been drooling over the pictures and recipes, trying to decide what to try out first. This would be wonderful to put my creations in and would make my daughter's upcoming birthday a blast, I know she'd really enjoy getting mom's special creation in a box with a sweet handmade sticker ~ what a NICE giveaway :)

  135. I love to bake mostly because I love to share my creations. I am always looking for a cute way to package up my baked goods - the boxes and seals are very cute and would travel well. Also, I've not seen the cute baking cups before, those are really nice. Thanks for sharing this idea!

  136. I LOVE it, so cute, who wouldn't want to receive a gift like that!?! Stephanie, do you read Jaimee Rose's blog (from the Arizona Republic)? She is so crafty, does lots of cute things like this and just did a fun article on anm ice cream party that a mom of little girls would love!

  137. One of my favorite passtimes in the winter is baking. I love the Christmas season and all the opportunities it brings to bake for friends and family. There is NOTHING better than filling your home with the warmth and aromas of fresh baked bread, muffins, cookies, pies... the list goes on. I think I can smell it now! :)

  138. What a great idea! It is so easy to have the idea of a little gift but to get overwhelmed by logisitcs....

  139. Wow! My tot LOVES cupcakes and I have yet to make any for him bcz I don't have all the stuff (tray etc)! This would be perfect!

  142. Hi Stephanie,

Great idea for gifts. I remember these cupcakes that we used to make when I home-schooled my two older daughters. They were, of course, healthy and very tasty as I recall. Lots of bran but the kids loved them.

I actually miss doing all of that baking. I was a real "pioneer mom" who made everything from scratch. Not so much anymore. My husband does most of the cooking around here. He enjoys it.

  143. Who doesn't just Love cupcakes!!! This is a fabulous gift idea bit i would probably just keep it because i love to bake.
    thanks for the giveaway

  144. Cupcakes are so easy and so fun and I just don't make them enough. I can't wait until I'm all settled into my new house so I can start baking some more!

Those homemade seals will be perfect for Christmas when I bake up a whole bunch of different cookies and deliver them to neighbors and friends.

  145. That really is a wonderful idea! Your pumpkin crumble muffins look fabulous - looks like a good use for the pumpkin I still have in my freezer from last fall!

  146. My son loves pumpkin muffins. The recipe you posted looks delicious- might have to make those to take on our beach trip later this week. Love the cupcake boxes- adorable. Great idea!

  147. Cupcakes are the "new" got to have dessert- and I love to both make and give them as special treats. The adorable wrapping is perfect to dress them up as a house gift and also to send them to my kids in college!

  148. What a neat and special gift idea. I love cupcakes! My kids do, too, but I rarely make them because I only have one 6-cup muffin pan. A whole batch of cupcakes takes FOREVER! That's why it'd be really nice to win this prize. :)

  149. Oh my your pumpkin muffins look delicious! I am better at baking than cooking so this little gift pack would be perfect for me. Or I could give it away as a gift. Decisions decisions ha ha

  151. I love this idea! Cupcakes are one of my favorite things and I definitely have a lot of special occasions coming up (bridal shower and wedding)! These would make great THANK YOU gifts! Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  152. This is a great idea for a cute thank you. I would love to keep those boxes on hand too.....it's all about the presentation!

  153. That's a fantastic set! I sometimes miss the oodles of time I used to have baking up goodies for friends and family, but the fact that I now have a sweet little boy to bake them for definitely makes up for it :)

  154. What a cool idea, and a neat set, too! Homemade treats are always so fun to receive, and if they're all dressed up like this? Sounds unbeatable. :)

  155. I like to give baked goods for special occasions, but it never occurred to me to make them extra special by dressing up the packaging. It's certainly more impressive than generic plastic wrap! I wonder if the boxes would work for a stack of cookies (my specialty)?

  156. What an awesome idea! These would also be the perfect "pick-me-ups" for someone who may be sad... It would look so professional!
