GIVEAWAY: $30 to Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill

On a recent day trip to Phoenix, we stopped in at Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill on Baseline and 23rd Street.

The fast casual restaurant has a west coast flair with island decor. Wear your flip flops and your slouchy sweatshirt - you'll be right at home.

On the menu? Fish tacos of all kinds, plus seafood tacos & burritos (pick your filling: atlantic salmon, mahi mahi, tilapia, shrimp, or lobster). If you prefer above-water fare, you can choose chicken or steak tacos/burritos or one of four salads.

Whether you're dining in or on-the-go, be sure to stop at the salsa bar, which features an assortment of red and green sauces, mild to jalapeƱo hot. You can also spritz your tacos with a fresh lemon or lime.

In addition to ten sodas, there are three craft beers and four Mexican beers on the menu. Or you can be like our family and opt for water (my favorite drink!).

Kid's meals at this locations were $4.49 and included choice of entree (cheese quesadilla, bean & cheese burrito, fish taco, chicken taquitos, or chicken bites), side (applesauce, pinto beans, black beans, rice), a mini churro, and a drink.

I ordered the Original Fish Tacos - scrumptious, though not particularly healthful, I'm sure. Tim opted for the Grilled Gourmet Tacos with Steak. "Do you like it?" I asked. "Of course! It has steak, bacon, and cheese." Ha!

The girls had Cheese Quesadillas, which seemed better than what Chipotle has to offer in that category (Chipotle's burritos are decent, but their tortillas stink).

Our family of five (the two of us and three tiny girls, 6 and under) ate for less than $30.

Would I eat at Rubio's again? Yes. It's certainly not gourmet, but it's a good choice for fast-casual at a moderate price point.

Established in San Diego in the early 1980's, Rubio's now has 200+ locations in five states: California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado.

Have you ever dined at Rubio's? What was your experience?

  9. We ate at Rubio's a few times when we were dating and newly married. Always liked the fish tacos. Then we moved to Texas, where there were no locations. We recently moved to a new city in Colorado, so I just looked up their locations, and they've got one just a mile or two away from us! Hooray!

    1. As I was writing this post, I noticed the nachos on the menu. I think that's what I'll order next time we go. Thanks for the recommendation.

  10. I love Kneaders here in Utah. THey make fabulous salads, soups and sandwiches all on fabulous fresh baked bread.

  11. We are usually Chipotle fans but would love to try Rubios. It is not authentic Mexican food but good in a pinch and great for families with kids.
