Homemade Bread: One of My Favorite Things

Homemade Bread: One of My Favorite Things 1If you check my "Favorites" page, you'll notice that homemade bread right out of the oven is one of my favorite foods. There's something about that yeasty scent, the way the butter (butter, not margarine, mind you) melts inside a freshly cut loaf.

As a busy mom with a blog, a business, and a baby to raise, the whole baking bread from scratch thing isn't extremely realistic. Pre-baby, I did make bread that way occasionally, but it always seemed like a daylong affair with all of the rising and kneading and rising some more.

Homemade Bread: One of My Favorite Things 2But, ah, the beauty of living in the modern era. My family enjoys warm, homemade bread several nights a week thanks to my Zojirushi Home Bakery Mini.

From the website: "The Home Bakery Mini Breadmaker's 1 lb. loaf is the perfect size for smaller households to savor the taste of freshly baked bread everyday without waste."

Not only does the breadmaker allow me to make a wide variety of breads (Basic White to Honey to 100% Whole Wheat to Pumpernickel to Seven Grain to Chocolate), it also has the capability to make pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, whole wheat buns, cookies, cakes, and pasta.

Homemade Bread: One of My Favorite Things 3This little machine is ridiculously easy to use. Just add a few ingredients and hit "start." About 3 1/2 hours later - ta da! - a fresh bread loaf. My favorite part about the bread is that I know exactly what ingredients are going in. No preservatives, no ingredients I can't read or pronounce. I love having that knowledge and I rarely buy other loaves now that I have this handy little contraption.

One minor critique: Although the 1 lb. loaf *is* the perfect size for 2 adults and 1-2 little ones (In our house - we gobble the loaf down in no time!), there are some situations when I wish I could make a larger loaf (if, for example, we are entertaining).

The Zojirushi Home Bakery Mini can be purchased online or at a store near you for approximately $180.

  1. We used to have a bread maker but it broke. I miss homemade bread! I think I will have to see if it can be fixed, or buy a new one, or make it the real way.

  2. Hi Steph!

Just made a loaf of home-made bread this weekend... Used 2 parts white flour/ 1 part wheat - and threw in some rosemary and raisins. It made a tasty Sunday morning breakfast :-)

This handy maker might cut down on some of that legwork though, I'll have to look into it~ Thanks for the tip!

  3. My dream as an older girl was to get married and bake bread. I've gotten married but have fell behind on the baking bread part. I too love fresh baked bread, there's nothing like it. I have a KitchenAid mixer which makes the kneading easy but it still is a little work having to remember to punch down and heat the oven and a couple extra things to wash too. I've been thinking recently that I'd love a bread maker. I'm even thinking of putting it on my Christmas wish list.

  4. I loooove homemade bread! I dont have a bread maker though, so I always request it of my mom when I go to her house for dinner. Mom does everything best though, right?

  5. We make the dough in our bread maker, remove it and place it in a loaf pan or make rolls out of the dough (make whatever you like) and bake in regular oven; then you can start another dough batch in the maker. We like the look and crust of an oven baked loaf. Enjoy!

  6. Mmmmmmm, bread. I love it, but I've never had a maker OR the time to make it by hand (except once in high school), so store-bought it is for our family. Thanks for making me drool on my new laptop...shoot.

  7. I love homemade bread!! I have a bread maker, but the only time it comes out is Christmas Eve:) We love homemade raisin bread for Christmas morning!!

  8. This is great. I always wanted a bread maker but didn't want the big one. This would be perfect for our family of 4. Thanks,
I will look for it in the stores.

  9. Mmmmm....That first picture of bread got my mouth watering. Now I'm going to have to bake some bread. I have a great recipe for no knead bead in a cast iron dutch cooker that comes out like a delicious European treat - crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Bread-baking is definitely on the list for this week now!

  10. Oh to have homemade bread that readily available, dangerous for me! I would be eating it everyday!

  11. Love, love, love homemade bread. The stuff out of the machine isn't quite as amazing as the hand done stuff but oh so much easier (and more reliable...always rises) so I'm always willing to overlook the slight difference. The whole reason I don't have a bread machine anymore is that I started eating too much of it. It is irresistible!

  12. I love my bread maker. It's nothing fancy but it works. I usually use it to make dough because I'm terrible at kneading. My favorite thing to make is homemade sweet dough for monkey bread.

  13. I used to love to use my bread maker before I had kids. now it is just one more thing to take up space on our ever shrinking counter. I may be inspired to get it out again now.

  14. Now I want some freshly baked bread!! I LOVE bread but have never made it myself because it seemed like so much work but this sounds easy!

  15. Wow, I really want one of those! I've been holding off trying a breadmaker because of the waste aspect but this looks super practical for us.

  16. How cute! We actually do have a bread maker (a full sized one) but I never use it. For me, the process of actually doing it all by hand is half the fun! Of course, the other half is the delicious fresh baked bread ;)
