How We Keep House: Magic Bumpers

How We Keep House: Magic Bumpers 1When we first bought our 5th wheel, our 4-year-old ran right to the master bedroom and declared, "I'm going to sleep right here with my little sis!"

Tim & I had a good laugh about it.

Guess where they're sleeping now? Mmm-hmm. The master bedroom. But...it was our choosing.

Here's the reality of RV living. Quarters are tight. We wanted to be able to put our little ones to sleep and then stay up to talk, eat a snack, clean house, watch movies, work on our laptops, and do...ahem...other things.

Thus, we tuck our girls in bed back in the master each night, close two separate doors, and we have the rest of the place to ourselves. Genius.

Because the bed is so high in the back, we use magic bumpers to ensure that our tiniest one doesn't take a tumble in the middle of the night. Magic Bumpers are firm foam wedges designed to go under the bedding (mattress pad, fitted sheet) as a safer and easier alternative to traditional children's bed guards. You can see pictures on the Magic Bumpers facebook page. The bumpers are a no-brainer to set up and they're super economical.

  1. Our 2 oldest daughters sleep on bunk beds in their own room and then the baby sleeps with us in our bed. These bumpers would be really nice for when the baby gets older and moves to her own bed!

  2. I think this is a great idea, I need in my room when they come get in my bed that is on risers so is pretty high and with hard wood floors it makes me so nervous I always try to make a barrier with a blanket or pillow

  3. When I was three I fell out of bed and broke my collarbone. So I am cautious when letting Elizabeth sleep on her own! She sleeps on a thermarest at the beginning of the night. Then comes to our bed after getting up to pee. I nurse her (she gets hungry!) and then I put her into her crib which is attached to my bed. In the morning she climbs back in for another nurse, which sends her back to sleep for an extra hour or so.

  4. Because I am such a hands on grandmother to my 6 grandchildren this would be a great thing to have. My crib owning days are over and so when my babies come over for sleep overs, I find myself making them "camp out" beds on my bedroom floor because I am always afraid they will fall out of my guest bedroom bed. These would ease my worries!

  5. Mu husband works third, so my baby sleeps with me and sometimes my three year old does too. He makes me nervous, because I don't want either of them to fall off the bed(which has happened with the three year old). The older two sleep in their own beds, but still like to climb in bed with us to watch tv or a movie or just talk.

  6. We live in a small place. The kiddos share a room and we have our own room. Analise was in a big bed (our full size futon) at 21 months and Jameson decided that he wanted to be in a big bed at 18 months! Not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a longer time of containment :) They love sharing a room though. They are great friends and always go to bed at the same time...talk a little...crack jokes with each other (knock knock jokes are the only thing in their line up right now). We let them have a bit of talking/silly time before we put the kibosh on it and insist that they quiet down and get some sleep :)

    1. I'm impressed that go to bed at the same time...and then drift off to sleep in the same room. Our girls do sleep together (and they do quite well), but our 2-year-old still insists that I lay down beside her at bedtime...which I [usually] do gladly. This season will be over in the blink of any eye.

  7. These would be perfect for my 2 year old grandson who doesn't want to sleep in a toddler bed, so is sleeping with his parents.

  8. Wow I have never heard of those. What a great product. I am in awe of your family and what you are doing. God bless you and your family.

  9. We call Mo the inch worm sleeper. She creeps & creeps until she bonks her head on the edge of her bed. Then, she cries, of course! These could make for a softer bonk!

  10. These do look really neat! Are they comfortable to sleep up against? Right now we are totally all FOUR of us sleeping in one bed CRAZY!! That king bed was a blessing, thank you. ;)

  11. our 6 month old starts the nite off in his crib but often ends up in my bed and I definitely need this bumper to keep him safe!!

  12. We used a co-sleeper in our room until our children were about six months. They now have their own rooms and sleeping is much easier as I am a light sleeper and would wake at every little noise. These bumpers would be great for traveling. I'm already worrying about how we will sleep with our busy little ones on vacation this summer. These would be great to take along for peace of mind!

  13. This is genius! Our son sleeps in his own room at our regular home, but when we are in our vacation home, he sleeps with us (we just have 1 bedroom) for the same reasons you stated. He's too big for a pack and play so he sleeps in a bed. He moves around a lot so we need these!

  14. This is amazing! My little one won't stay still for even a minute and this includes when she is sleeping. I've been worried about when we transition her to a toddler bed because a regular side rail just wouldn't cut it since she moves around so much. These would be perfect!

  15. I'm thinking we would like to be entered into this one too. I am pretty sure our little one will be climbing out of her crib pretty soon and I am hoping to have them room together possibly in bunkbeds in the next couple of years.

  16. Our son shared our room for quite a long time and moving him into his own room seemed impossible. But we finally discovered, it wasn't sleeping alone in a room, it was moving rooms that scared him. So we gave him the master bedroom and we moved into a smaller one. It has worked out so well for us and he loves having the "big" room.

  17. I would love this for co-sleeping and also for when we camp!! Like some of the others, I too am curious if they take up a ton of space on the bed?? Oh and our two older girls share a bedroom, while our youngest gets her own room or co-sleeps with us. Once she is sleeping thru the night, she will join her sisters in their room!

  18. Interesting! This is a great invention, though I'm sure you need some pretty deep pocketed fitted sheets to fit over these?

  19. These would be great to use when my little grandson comes to visit. I worry about him rolling out of bed. I've considered getting rails for the spare bed, but these would be much better.

  20. ingenious. We are blessed to have a large Cape Style house with 3 bedrooms. And since we only have 1 baby right now - space is ample. We found we got NO rest or peace of mind with the baby IN the bed, so he slept next to the bed in a bassinet for the 1st 6 months and then he moved to his own crib in his bedroom next to ours .... he has been fine with this, and we are all better rested for it. We used to try to have him in bed with us but to him, that ALWAYS meant "playtime" - even at 3 am when I would TRY to sneak his sleepy body in - nope, he would immediately pop right away and start crawling all over us and laughing. LOL. :) My husband who had to get up at 5:30 to go to work did not find this very amusing! :)
Still, I would love these bumpers for when he transitions to a toddler bed, or even for if we travel and have to use a bed to put him to nap. :)

  21. Our sleeping situation is me and the baby in one queen size bed and my husband and 2.5 year old in the other queen size bed. Sometimes my older daughter ends up with me and the baby. Was it easy to get them to sleep together and not wake each other up? We are hoping our girls eventually sleep in the same bed (our older daughter needs a snuggle buddy at night). This summer the baby will be about 18 months and I'm hoping maybe then we could put them together. I think we will probably need to get some sort of rail type thing since the bed isn't right on the floor (box spring is on the floor).

    1. Our 2-year-old still wakes up in the night, but - fortunately - her older sister just snoozes on when I come in to comfort her little sister.

  22. These are a great idea! I would love to try them out with our 3 & 4-year-olds, who have fallen out once or twice (their beds are low, though). Wish I had thought of this!

  23. We have a gated thing, but this looks much more comfortable should you roll towards the edge.

  24. We have one of these from a different brand
    http://gobedbug.com/

I love it! We take it with us when we travel as well. It's great to have an option that works in any bed. I also used it as a prop for my back when side-lying to nurse when Eli was tiny.

    1. Bed Bug and Magic Bumpers are actually the same brand...and I think I originally heard about the product from you!

  25. Right now our sleeping arrangement is me in our king-size bed with our three youngest, ages 4, 2, and 7 months. My husband is a good sport about it and doesn't mind sleeping in the boys' bunk bed - we know it's just for a season. I'm just glad my 7yo is happy to sleep in her own bed.The Magic bumpers look great - much better than bed rails, I'm sure!

  26. We are about to move our son to a big boy bed in the preparation for baby #2, and I have been looking into guards. These look so much better than the rails! Would so love to try them out!

  27. Where do you find these products? I wish I had known about this a few months ago when we were looking for a bed guard for a youngest when we moved him into his big boy bed. He's done okay, but these would have been great. We couldn't find something that would work on a bunkbed. I'm assuming this would work. Pretty cool!

  28. Our 3 y.o. sleeps in a twin bed with a rail on the side of his bed his own room. When our newborn outgrows his crib the plan is that they will share a room and the little one will sleep in a trundle bed. These bumpers would be a great solution for guarding the one in the lower bed.

  29. I actually put our matress on the floor to feel more comfortable cosleeping with my little one. We are a working family so I feel like cosleeping is a way that we can get extra time together as a family. Oh, and she just started spooning back - nothing in the world feels better!

  30. I love this idea. I actually put our matress on the floor to feel more comfortable cosleeping with my little one. We are a working family so I feel like cosleeping is a way that we can get extra time together as a family. Oh, and she just started spooning back - nothing in the world feels better!

  31. Very interesting. I like that they go under the sheets. I'm curious as to how much of the actual sleeping space they take up on the mattress. I currently have our crib in a sidecar arrangement with the bed and the extra elbow space is nice - plus it helps me keep little one away from my husband. Hmm, these on a king would be ideal for us for our next little one - now you have me thinking.

  32. I'd like to try these for when we take the side of our daughters crib off soon. We could also use them for co-sleeping with the new baby!

  33. Wow that is genius! I love that it goes under the bedding. We use a traditional side rail for our two and a half year old's bed. She uses it as a spring board for her acrobatic adventures in her bed!!! Her bed is pretty low to the ground so we could actually probably do away with it now. I love this idea though, much less tempting to climb on and launch off of!

  34. When I moved my oldest to a regular bed we didn't use any guards and once he did fall out. Ouch. My youngest is still in her crib and she LOVES her crib. Seriously. She never even cries when she wakes up. She just snuggles and in and talks to herself until we hear her and come to get her. But we will probably move her over to a regular bed this summer and maybe even do bunk beds. I'm a little nervous about the going-to-bed routine though. I feel like they will NEVER fall asleep if we put them to bed at the same time. What is your routine? Does your youngest go to bed first? Do they ever wake each other up?

    1. Our "routine" is actually a little crazy right now...certainly not perfect. We're still getting used to our small living space and the 3-hour time change.

Usually, I lay down with the girls in the back until they fall asleep - and then I sneak out to the main living space to work, blog, read, and be with Tim. This is a pretty good system...except when I fall asleep. ;)

Our 2-year-old still wakes up in the night sometimes, but our 4-year-old doesn't seem particularly bothered by it. Sh just snoozes on when I come in to comfort her sister.

  35. Those seem super useful. Thanks for the info. We have to have our bed pushed up against a wall right now and these bumpers might help to make our life a little better.

  36. I've been trying to find something to help our little one sleeps and this may just be it. We're now a family with two little ones and it is a lot more challenging than one so we are looking for products that can help us. Thanks for the suggestion.

  37. We have three bedrooms upstairs. Originally we had each child in their own room. But in preparation for bringing a new little brother home, we've moved my son into my daughter's room. They are in twin beds in there, but he still takes naps in the crib in his "original" room.

What do you guys do about naps? Is your youngest still taking them?

    1. Our 2-year-old typically takes 1 nap in the afternoon - between 1:30-3:30pm. I lay beside her in the back "room" on the queen bed (with the magic bumpers on one side) until she falls asleep.

  38. Wow, I haven't seen these before. My little one moves around a lot in bed. This looks like it will stay put because it's under the sheet.
