I write

I write 1

I have 17 drafts ready to go, but I hesitate to hit publish.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure where I "fit" in the blogosphere anymore.

I'm not a craft blogger, though I do love creating beautiful things.

I'm not a food blogger, though I am passionate about making and eating good foods.

I'm not a fitness blogger, though I seek to stay strong and care about the state of my body.

I'm not a travel blogger, though I've been on a yearlong cross-country roadtrip and adore international travel.

I'm not a money blogger, though we live simply and without debt.

I'm not a product review blogger, though I find great value in trying new items to share the experience with others.

I'm not a business blogger, though I am a business woman.

I'm not a book blogger, though I read-read-read.

I'm not a "mom blogger," though I cherish the role of motherhood.

I'm not a "social issues blogger," though I care deeply about advocating for the poor, the orphans, and the elderly.

I'm not a "Christian blogger," though Christ is the center of my life.

I don't have time to have that many blogs. So I just have one. It's here. I'm me.

I write.

I write about crafts, food, fitness, travel, money, products, business, books, motherhood, social issues, and Christ.

(I also write poetry). (I write from my heart). (I write to encourage). (I write to remember). (I write to learn). (I write to make money). (I write to make change). (I write to my kids). (I write in the morning). (I write in bed).  (I write in my head). (I write for magazines). (I write for myself). (I write because it's who I am, what I do).

From now on, when someone asks what kind of blog I have, I should probably just say, "I write."

  1. Ditto and ditto and ditto. You totally captured my thoughts on this very topic. And though I haven't quite made peace with it, I'm happy to know that I'm in good company. And also? Lifestyle blogs--as Jo-Lynne succinctly put it--are among my favorites to read for the same reason she noted: variety. I also appreciate the familiarity I feel with lifestyle bloggers. When I first started reading blogs and blogging, I felt friendships forming and that's what kept me blogging. I do have food and craft blogs that I read, but I certainly don't feel the emotional connection to those bloggers that I do with lifestyle bloggers.

    Great post!

    1. I'm not sure I've "made peace with it" yet either. Some days I want to say sayonara to my whole blog and start from scratch.

But then I remember that my favorite blogs are written by real people about their real lives. I like blogs with writers behind them, writers who know how to tell a good story...writers like YOU.

  2. I can really relate to this. I've been writing since I knew how to spell. It's why I studied journalism in college and loved every second of my studies. Unfortunately, as of late most of my writing stays in my head and rarely makes it to a published post. But, by my husband's insisting, we're trying to find ways to rectify that.

    1. I wish I would have taken a few more journalism classes in college. I majored in English (which was great because it required me to read-read-read), but I like the pithy style of news writing too. :)

Did you ever work for a newspaper/magazine? I can't remember.

  3. I'm amazed that you still find time to write! I enjoy your perspective on big issues, day-to-day things, the products you use and the little glimpses of your family that you share with us. I miss writing regularly, but can't seem to fit it in right now. It's ok - but one of these days, I'll be writing again.

  4. There is a movement in the blogosphere towards niche blogging, and you are made to feel like a second class citizen if you don't have one. I don't have a niche either. I blog about all of the above. I made peace with this fact a LONG time ago.

You are better off keeping it in one place anyway, and keeping your traffic in one place too.

People like variety, and this way, there's a little something for everyone. If somebody doesn't like my content on Monday, there will be something different on Tuesday. Works well for me!! :-)

Keep up what you are doing. You have a voice that people want to hear, no matter what you are talking about.

  5. I can completely relate. I have several blogs in the attempt to organize my various types of writing but it still never quite can "compartmentalize" the way I write on a variety of topics in a variety of genres. I just call myself a creative mom blogger... I never believed in the whole " you have to find a specialized niche" for blogging... I am sure it is beneficial if the only goal is business/money....but for those of us who also write for self discovery and expression and communication, having to label the kind of writing we do is very self limiting,

Just keep writing...you don't have to define it, we will enjoy it all the same!

    1. Thank you for saying that, Jan. So encouraging.

I'm still getting in the groove of having three kids and a fledgling business..but I hope to post more frequently again soon.

  6. This is so perfect! I always struggle to put my blog in a "niche" when asked even though "they" say that's how you make it. "Find your niche". But I am who I am and I have interests that cross lots of lines! And life changes too, how can you be one thing forever?
I love your blog because it's you!

  7. Love this post. I think there's a lot of pressure to be a certain type of blogger, but I think the blogger's I enjoy reading most are those who simply write what they feel and about what's going on in their lives. Thanks for having the courage to do that.

  8. This is exactly how I feel! Although I am obviously relating myself to my profession with the name of my blog, it is such an eclectic mix of topics that I don't really fit in anywhere. Note to self, "I write."
