If my house was burning down and I could only grab 1 thing...

If my house was burning down and I could only grab one material object, it would be my laptop.

Of course, I would be saddened by the loss of clothes, books, furniture, and other electronic contraptions...but I would be devastated if I lost our pictures (which are almost entirely on my laptop). To me, pictures represent memories. They capture milestones and moments that can never be re-lived or reenacted. Unlike other household items, photographs are irreplaceable. Once lost, they are gone forever.

Photographs remind me of what matters most: the people that surround me and the time that I have with them.

If my house was burning down and I could only grab 1 thing... 1Because photos are so invaluable, I don't bat a lash when it comes to the cost of our digital cameras (and, for the record, I'm a major "super saver" - my husband just was joking yesterday that he could give me a budget of $5/month and I probably would still have some left over at the end of the month). I don't want to look back and wish my photos were clearer and truer to the moment. For this reason, you will never find me with a disposable camera or even a cheaper digital camera.

If my house was burning down and I could only grab 1 thing... 2I recently had the opportunity to review the Sony DSLR-A300K, a camera that is a fantastic choice if you are new to DSLR photography. If you are a techie and you want to read all of the specs, you can check out the Sony website (click link above). Otherwise, I'll just point out a few of my favorite features:

  • 10.2 megapixel resolution - which, essentially, means crisper and more beautiful photos.
  • Super SteadyShot image stabilization system - which helps prevent blurring due to "camera shake" (which I am a culprit of because I often have "something" else in my arms - a bag, a baby, etc...).
  • Continuous shot "mode" - which means you can take action pictures in sequence and the camera doesn't need time to "rest" in between.
For example, take a typical activity like a daddy/daughter car wash:

If my house was burning down and I could only grab 1 thing... 5

If my house was burning down and I could only grab 1 thing... 6

If my house was burning down and I could only grab 1 thing... 7

This camera is packed with features, yet it's also easy to use for beginners. If you've been thinking about diving into the DSLR world, check out the Sony DSLR-A300K ($599.99).

  1. I have all of our photos uploaded into PhotoBucket. That way out of state family can view them, and if something happened, I'd still have them (even though photo bucket shrinks the resolution down). It took me hours to do, but I finally got through them all. If you don't have your photos backed up on CDs, you should do that. You never know when the computer could just die on you. I've had that happen a few times before so luckly I also keep photos backed up on discs.

  2. Thanks for the review, I always wonder about buying a larger, nicer digital camera such as this. In addition to having a great camera, we just lost all our pictures from a hard-drive crash. Of course, we didn't back-up, so lesson learned. Once you have the pictures, take very good care of them: back-up your drive. :)

  3. Thanks for this review! I've been hearing a lot about these cameras but knew nothing about them. A nice camera really makes all the difference when it comes to taking photos!

  4. Nice review! Do you have to know something about photography in order to use a DSLR properly? Or can you get by with a point and shoot method?

I've often thought about the house-burning-down scenario, too, and similarly, I would be most devastated by the loss of my pictures over all my other possessions. My photos are also all on my computer, but my computer isn't a laptop like yours, and therefore, I can't grab it in a hurry. Do you have any storage tips or reviews of special products that might help for someone in my boat?

  5. I'm dying for a DSLR, and I've been studying up on them. Janice from 5MinutesforMom also said the Sony DSLRs are very nice. I just wish I had an extra 600 bucks lying around right now...

Well, I guess it's nice to have something to dream about. :)
