A Brief History of Maytag

We read through the Little House series last year (pure magic, by the way!) and now I often think of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. Out on the brave frontier - building house after house, lovingly by hand, as they moved west.

Tim almost always snuck in as I read aloud to the girls at bedtime, listening at the foot of the bed. That's how utterly enchanting the books were.

At one particular junction of reading, Tim said matter-of-factly, "they must have smelled really bad." Lack of electricity, plumbing, and gas made for a tough combination for cleaning clothing. Add in harsh, blizzardy weather in the winter...and the result would undoubtedly have been a surplus of unpleasant smells. Can you imagine changing diapers or cleaning up spills without easy access to warm, clean water?

How thrilled everyone must have been in 1909, when Maytag came out with this beauty:

A Brief History of Maytag 1

A hand-powered tub. Oh, the luxury!

You would add water, soap, and clothing...then, you would put your muscles to work as you cranked the lever.

Forty years later, in 1949, the company came out with an automatic washing machine. Maytag's first automatic dryer debuted in 1953.

Now, over 100 years since that very first tub, Maytag continues to innovate and design dependable appliances to help families save time and money.

The latest Bravos XL washer, for example, features 13 specialty cycles - including the Powerwash Cycle and the Allergen Cycle (which helps eliminate 95 percent of common household allergens). The washer is also 4.6 cu ft - which means we can easily wash our queen size comforter and sheets, with room to spare! Oh, what a wonder it is to be able to add in laundry, push a button, and see a countdown timer that tells me when my load will be done. I am grateful.

* I wrote this post participating in a Maytag Moms Dependable Laundry Ambassador program by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Maytag. I was provided with a Maytag washer and dryer set to facilitate my post.

  1. We love the Little House series! (and I like your new blog header too!)

The laundry and bathing difficulties of pioneer days are one thing I've never wanted to experience, even though I think I would have loved living in that time period.
