National Breastfeeding Awareness Month: a giveaway

Let's celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Month together!

Pull up a chair, grab a snack, and we can share our favorite resources & give our best breastfeeding advice.

Oh, and please do enter this fabulous giveaway...for yourself or a friend.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One mama or mama-to-be will receive the following breastfeeding starter pack (valued at over $94):

Lifestyle Microfiber Bra by Bravado! Designs ($39)

lifestyle microfiber bra by bravado designs

All nursing bras are not alike. The Lifestyle Microfiber Bra (available in sizes B-F) stands out from the pack because it is comfortable, attractive (in a simple, no-nonsense kind of way), and easy to use. Plus, the material is soft and wire-free so you won't be poked or jabbed.

NOTE: I'd also love to try Bravado's cute Nursing Tank Shrug ($25) in Ruby, especially after seeing a recent photo of Jo-Lynne {Musings of a Housewife} in a shrug (not that exact shrug, but a similar one...). She always looks fabulously stylish and I often look to her site for fashion inspiration.

Tube of Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Topical Cream ($9.99)

This cream was a godsend for me in the early weeks of breastfeeding. I applied it liberally. In fact, I went through THREE tubes of it in the first two weeks with baby #2. It's great for sore, chapped, and/or bleeding nipples.

tube of lansinoh hpa lanolin topical cream

Box of Lansinoh Ultra Soft Nursing Pads ($6.49/36 pack)

There are regular nursing pads and then there are ultra-soft nursing pads. The ultra-soft ones are the best for those first...um...sensitive days.

Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump (~$30)

I'm not really a pumper because I prefer to keep my babies by my side all of the time (yes, all of the time). But - if you plan to work or volunteer or go out with friends without your baby in the first year, you may want this handy, well-priced device.

Mommy's Breastfeeding Book ($8.95)

Not a reader? No problem! This pocket-sized book is a breeze to skim or read in one setting. The concise and practical text features 101 tips on everything from how to latch your baby properly to how to manage engorgement to how to increase your milk supply. So many good ideas in one miniature book!

Healthy Baby Bounty Bag (FREE, at select hospitals nationwide)

If you delivered your baby at a hospital, there's a good chance you received a "goody" bag with lots of...formula. I know I did. Now, there's a better option for hospitals (and for moms) - the Healthy Baby Bounty Bag, a discharge bag that only features coupons and samples that support breastfeeding. The bag includes mini samples/coupons from SaniHands, Boogie Wipes, Aquaphor, Lansinoh, Sears, ERGO, and other breastfeeding-friendly companies. The samples certainly aren't spectacular or electrifying. But it's a step in the right direction.

P.S. I'd love to see coupons for Majamas, Bebe Au Lait, The Shower Hug, and Melinda G in there. Oh, and maybe there could be a little MetropolitanMama.net card in each bag too (It's a great resource, after all).

  1. I breastfeed with my first baby and I think the Healthy Baby Bounty Bag is such a great idea. Its more healthy to breat feed, but it seems in the hospital they sorta promote formula. I know they wanted to push it on me when i was struggling at first to breast feed. I am hoping to have more real soon, and this would be the perfect gift to win to get the party started.. LOL

  2. That looks like a great gift pack to give to my friend who is due to deliver next month. I know for me, I have tried several different nursing bras and tanks. I Most of them seem to be very low support though, not great for chasing my two-year old around the house in. The other problem (one that I actually like though) is that I have lost so much weight that my bras don't fit so well anymore.

  3. What a perfect package for the new mom! I nursed my first for 18 months and next week will be one year with my twins. Would love to share this with my dear friend who is pregnant with her first.

  4. Expecting Number 5....God what was I thinking, but I am happy now, the first few minutes..well weeks, shocked me sicne I hvae a 18, 13, 4, 2 and one on the way, i have never breast feed before so this would be fantastic, i have alwasy wanted to breast feed, but was on Medication and didnt want to take any chances...but now I am on nothing!

This would be so grea, with all my kids, i could never afford these things myself right now
    Thansk for the Fantastic Giveaway

  5. I'm currently nursing my twins.. it will be for one year in less than two weeks. No bottles, no formula.. it's a huge milestone!

  6. Our baby boy was just born August 10 th. so this would be great. All this little guy wants to do is nurse and so this is great!

  7. This would be an amazing gift for my friend who just had her baby on Tuesday. The baby is nursing like a champ, but of course her nipples are still getting used to nursing. And although my friend won't be returning to work for a while, she does plan to pump occasionally in order to run errands, etc. and so a manual pump would be perfect. I am a huge Lansinoh fan, one of my favorite brands.

  8. What a great idea for hospitals to carry these bags! I was shocked at the lack of breast feeding info I received when my first 3 children were born. My daughter was born premature in 1997 and spent the first month of her life in the NICU. The nurses there were not supportive at all of my choice to breast feed. I had to ask for the right to feed her as the nurses were much more interested in feedings through her G-tube and didn't seem to want to waste time allowing me to feed naturally. I'm currently due with our 4th child this winter and will be breast feeding this little one as well.

  9. I just had baby #3. I think our bodies are absolutely amazing. I feel so much satisfaction everytime my baby nurses (once I get passed the beginning pain). I am so greatful for all the products that make life easier for breatfeeding moms!

  10. I love nursing my baby, I especially enjoy the quiet time with her in the morning while everyone else is asleep. I breastfed my toddler until she was 18 months. And will nurse the little one for a slong as I can. Even though I have to pump every day while I am at work, it is all worth it

  11. This is a wonderful gift pack and would be useful to any new mother just starting to nurse her baby or even one that has before!

  12. What a great giveaway! It's so annoying to get all that formula that doesn't get used. I always gave it away so it didn't get wasted. But it's WONDERFUL that they finally have a pro-breastfeeding bag to give to new Moms. My daughter that never nursed at night, but she nursed every 2 hours all day until she was 9 or 10 months old I bought undershirt tank tops and just cut slits in them. I wore them under my regular shirts. It was like making my own nursing shirts with no sewing involved! :) My sister just had a baby so I'd love to win this giveaway for her!

    Thanks!
    Jen

  13. If you haven't tried the Bravado nursing tank tops - do it! They aren't cheap (about $45-50) but so worth it. They don't stretch out and actually support your ladies! Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com

  14. I'm expecting DD2 in November. I was lucky to breastfeed DD1 fairly easily. My only problem was that no one told me about OVER production issues and that led to a few problems. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  15. Breatfeeding was the bestfeeding. There is nothing so precious as that mouth coming at you to latch on. Like a heat seeking missle. And the natural immunities passed on made it so helpful. I realy noticed a difference in colds etc from when the little ones breastfed and when they stopped.

  16. I am expecting my first in Nov and am excited to venture into breastfeeding. This sounds like it would be a great start package to get me going!

  17. I'm really nervous about breastfeeding. I haven't bought anything yet because I don't know what brand is best! I know I'll need a pump and nursing pads. I've heard good things about Lansinoh, and I'd like to try if I can!

  18. I am currently nursing baby number 2. I have to say that breastfeeding is much easier this time around. I knew what to expect and that if I grunted through the hurdles (like my son having thrush and passing a breast infection on to me) that a few days of pain are still well worth the advantages of breast milk for my little one. It's also important to have the right products at hand. The Lansinoh cream is a must those first two weeks or so and without the nursing pads you'd be changing your shirt 14 times during the day!

  19. i have breast feed my last 2 babies and am ttc now again. but i love breast feeding but it it hard to find the perfect breast feeding bra.

  20. I have been breastfeeding for 10 months so I do not need this but my friend about to give birth could definitely use this. Breastfeeding is definitely something I feel passionate about.

    ykatrina at hotmail dot com

  21. I'm nursing a 6wk old baby girl and as with my son I could not do it without Lansinoh lanolin cream. That stuff is amazing and a must have for nursing mothers. This is a really cool sweepstakes!

  22. I am nursing 6 month old twins and it is lots of work but I love it. I use lansinoh products religiously and they have help with leaking and cracked nipples.

    member (dot) thao (at) gmail.com

  23. Could you imagine if this giveaway kit was your discharge kit from the hospital?!
    It really should be!

Lansinoh can also be used to help protect baby's skin. I love that it is such a versatile product.
I got alot of pressure to go out without the baby, but I have enjoyed being together alot more.

  24. I would love to give this to my friend as a gift. She just had her 2nd one week ago and is giving BF a much better try this time around. I am so proud of her for sticking with it this time!

Lansinoh was my best friend some days when I nursed my daughters.

  25. I am breastfeeding my baby and I love the lansinoh electric breast pump esp. when I started work. I have been able to pump the milk at work and store it for use later. I have enjoyed breastfeeding and it gives me some alone time with my baby. It will be really good to provide some informational material about the breastfeeding in the goody bag from the hospital. I remember the number of questions I had after I left the hospital.

  26. I too am typing this one handed as I nurse #2. Once the first few weeks of excruciating pain, cracking, and bleeding are over, nursing has been a breeze. I plan on goibg for one year with #2 as I did with #1. I STILL have to use nursing pads every day! (I have always only used the lansinoh ones - and the Lansinoh cream is a MUST in the beginning!) I tell all of my friends who are nursing to hang in there...it WILL get better! It is a special time and best for baby!

  27. My husband and I are trying for our first baby and this would come in handy for when we do get pregnant and welcome our new addition!

  28. love the healthy baby bounty bag. At the hospital they asked what brand of formula I wanted, I said I'm breastfeeing, she said yeah but don't you at least want the free diaper bag. That was a big fat no, I would have loved to have a bf'ing option along with all those formula give aways. BF'ing is something the Dr's seem to encrouage, so why aren't the hospitals following in that trend by offering items like this?

  29. I'm going to be a first time mom in Dec and plan to try breastfeeding. I'm rather nervous since most of my friends either chose not to or weren't able to and no one seems like they jumping to throw the boobie-related advice around! I'd love to win this prize pack.

  30. I'm very curious about that cream - I'm going to be a mom for the first time and all of my friends who BF say the first few weeks of it kills. I could use all the help I can get!

  31. i brestfed my son when he was born and wish i invested in some thngs. with ur first you never no what its like and i didnt know what to do.but as months went on i became a whole lot eaisier. im having my 2nd baby in dec and plan on breastfeeding again but i feel a lot more prepared on how painful its going to be at he begining and how awful it is when u dont feed for awhile and dont wanna wake the baby because he never sleeps and have no breast pump. i dont reccomend that. or if u hear a baby crying even if its not yours and you start leaking, but in the end its all worth it, its not like u do it forever.

  32. I have a 3 week old, who is my second child, but it's my first time breastfeeding exclusively. I have been struggling so much to keep up with it, it's completely exhausting! I have the Lansinoh cream but hadn't tried some of the other products you've listed. I have a few nursing bras, as well, but this Bravado one sounds really nice! I went for cheaper ones - I'm on a budget, after all. And the hospital bag full of breastfeeding stuff? Hello, where has this been?! I don't need the formula, I need my own person lactation consultant to keep in my pocket, whispering encouraging words and keeping me on track!
I may have to buy that book even if I don't win your contest, sounds like it might help me out!

  33. Looking forward to receiving the help for breastfeeding. Thanks for the information. It'll definitely help a lot of people.

  34. I would love to win this package for the Bravado nursing bra alone. My oldest is about to turn two and I am expecting again (9 weeks from my due date). The first time I bought the cheapest nursing bras that I could find that fit and they were NOT great. I am currently debating what to buy for this time around. I always wonder whether paying more is good or if you are just getting "taken." In the case of a good nursing bra, I'm starting to think it is worth the extra money. Thanks for the info on some products I hadn't heard of before!

  35. I am now expecting my second child after a ten year gap. I'm nervous and feel like I'm starting all over from scratch. With my first I didn't breast feed out of fear and lack of knowledge. I would love the opportunity to have such a great starter kit to help me along the right path with my new baby. Thanks for the opportunity!

  36. My best advice about breastfeeding is to not stress out if things aren't going exactly as you think it is supposed to. Relax. Everyone is different.

  37. This would be wonderful. I nurse each of my kids until age 1. I am planning on one more child. I could use them. Thanks for the chance to win! I could use them.

  38. This would be amazing! I had a baby girl almost 3 weeks ago and we are breastfeeding. These are all things that I would definitely use! Thanks for the chance!

  39. Ok, I'm entering this for my sister. We both made a pack that we were done with babies so we sold everything, and now she is pregnant. I was trying to convince her to just get a manual pump this time around but couldn't remember which one I had. And thanks, it was the Lashinoh. This would help her stock up a little! Thanks!

  40. have an 11 month old son and he has been exclusively breastfeed since he was born. I work full time outside of the home so I have to pump twice a day at work. At times it is challenging to stop what I am doing and pull out the pump. Whenever I think I may too busy to stop, I just think about my son's cute little face looking up at me and smiling. The innocent, loving look he gives me always makes my heart break. I plan to continue to nurse him for as long as my milk supply allows.

I have encouraged so many of my friends to nurse their children. I have helped them clear up all of the misconceptions about the pain, the time and all the other negativity that people but into their mind. I have even gone so far as to sit with one of my friends to help her get the proper latch when she was at her wits ends.

A new nursing bra would be great because I have grown 2 cup sizes since my son was born and I only have 2 bras in my new size.

  41. I am planning ahead, due in January, and looking forward to breastfeeding. This is a great opportunity to have the supplies I need for breastfeeding my baby. Thank you

  42. Would love, love, love to see a "breastfeeding kit" handed out at hospitals rather than the Similac bag. Definitely interested in seeing that kit.

  43. How fabulous! I'm breastfeeding my third baby and I've loved the experience with each of my kids. The healthy baby bounty bag is fantastic - I would love to see more materials given to moms that support breastfeeding. I'd love to see a major publisher support the effort by including a board book, too. That's the bag I'd definitely choose!

  44. I'm due with my first in about 5 weeks and these products would be really helpful... I love the idea of hospitals providing bags that actually Support breastfeeding too!

  45. Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Topical Cream was a life saver when I was nursing my first. I was in SO much pain and my nipples were so sore I didn't think I would make it past the first week. This made the difference allowing me to continue nursing. It has never been as bad with the subsequent babies, but that first time is something I will not forget.

  46. I have been breastfeeding my little guy since he was born 8 months ago. I really enjoy breastfeeding and have been so glad that I decided to go that route. I would love to have a breastpump. That way maybe hubby & I could go on a few dates without having to supplement formula which I don't want to do.

I would also love to find a great nursing bra. I haven't found one that I really like yet.

  47. I didn't realize that Lansinoh made a manual breast pump. I am needing to replace my Isis and might have to look for a lansinoh one instead. I only pump very occasionally so I wonder if this would work for me.

  48. My daughter just had her first baby and the hospital gave her the traditional goody bag with formula, but there was a coupon toward a breast pump. Again- step in the right direction! The products you mention are all really nice to have. I have found that nursing pads are hard to find as well as a variety of nursing bras. I breast fed 5 of 6 kids (the 6th was adopted) and the advantages are huge.

  49. I love Bravado nursing bras! What an excellent prize. Also, I love the Healthy Baby Bounty Bag. I wish I had received that after my sons' births. I have a friend who's expecting twins & would give this and the other prizes to her if I won:)

  50. This would be wonderful for me as I am due in 3 wks. I am taking a breastfeeding class next week and cannot wait to get started. Our oldest son has HORRIBLE food allergies and I really tried unsuccessfully to breast feed him, but did not get the proper equipment(breast pump), or have someone to help me through it. This time I am going to a class, reading a manual and making sure before we leave the hospital that I am completely ready to successfully breast feed!! I think breast feeding is so important and the best bonding experience you can achieve with your little one. Thanks for the giveaway!

  51. this is a great prize pack. Yes times have changed over the years and this would help with a new breastfeeding mom, I would love to give to my niece.

  52. This would have been very helpful when I was learning to breastfeed. I can now give this to my daughter. Thanks for the giveaway!

  53. As we wait for the arrival of baby 2.0- I've been mulling over what to wear to nurse in- I've always wanted to try a Bravado- So this would be just perfect. I also think the Healthy Baby Bounty Bag is such a great development. When I had my first son- I really did not like that we new moms were given the black bag full of formula offers & samples! I've already politely declined the bag given at the doctors office this time around...

  54. I am currently breastfeeding my newborn baby girl. this is my 5th child and I have breastfed them all. it would be great to win this prize pack to help me breastfeed another little one.

  55. I would love to win this for my mom who is due with baby #9 in Novemeber. She has a hard time find nursing bras that are comfortable and she loves Lansinoh! She has breastfed every single baby and this would be a great surprise to give her for the new baby!

  56. I have such an issue with hospitals giving out formula. My good friend recently had a baby, who was born a little jaundiced, the doctor at the hospital told her to feed the baby formula or pumped milk in a bottle to make sure the baby was eating enough and excreting the billirubin. Of coarse she did, and now the little on is having difficulty latching on.... I was SO mad! Anyways enough of my rants!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  57. that healthy baby bounty bag is an excellent idea! (don't enter me. i just wanted to say props to the company that is getting those into hospitals!)

  58. I'm due in December with my first, a little baby girl that we're naming Chloe. I plan on breastfeeding her. All these items would come in handy. It would make my day if I could win!! :)

  59. With my first child, I only breastfeed the first 10 days. I had to go back into the hospital with appendicitis, and by the time I returned home 4 days later, he only wanted a bottle. I'm having my daughter next week and I really hope this time I'll be able to breastfeed for an extended amount of time. These supplies would definitely help in that endeavor.

    mfalcon13 (at) hotmail (dot) com

  60. I love Lansinoh's breast pads... especially since I tend to be a bit leaky :) I nursed Sugar until she was 15 months old and then we just weaned because she pretty much was eating lots of regular food and I just felt like it was time. I'm not sure how long I'll nurse Goose. My initial goal is always 12 months then start weaning, gradually.

  61. This would be great for baby number 2 that is expected in about 8 weeks. I'm a big advocate for breastfeeding as it reduces breast cancer (which I lost my mother to) and hope to be able to continue it with this new baby. It's great bonding!

  62. I've really enjoyed reading everyone's comments and experiances breastfeeding. I breast fed our now 2 year old daughter for 14 months...and now wish that I would have attempted to do so longer. I also plan on breastfeeding the baby that I'm currently pregnant with (only a few more months to go before my due date!)

This would be a great prize to win. I loved using the Lansinoh products - both the cream and the pads.

That's also super exciting about some hospitals offering the breastfeeding bag - new mom's need all of the support that they can get!

  63. I would love to win this. My DS is now 3 and we nursed for two years. I'm expecting our second in November so this would be a wonderful thing for me! What a great giveaway!!!

  64. Fun! I'm due with my second daughter in 8 weeks (!!!), so this sure would come in handy!! I loved nursing Princess, so I'm extremely excited to begin a whole new nursing relationship with this baby!

  65. One of my girlfriends gave birth this morning to a 9lb 3oz baby girl and when I went to visit her (I was invited!) her little one was latched on and going to town. This was such a blessing as she struggled with nursing her first two. I would love to give her this gift pack.

  66. I've loved nursing all my babies (once we get past the excruciating pain of the first few weeks!) It's such a precious experience (I say as I type 1-handed while my baby nurses ;)

  67. All of this would be a great gift for a baby shower!! I usually give boring gifts at those things, but I bet this would go over well!

  68. I really enjoyed breastfeeding but me and the pump did not get along. With both girls each time I went back to work my milk supply dropped and I eventually had to stop and this was with pumping twice a day at work, before and after work and nursing whenever I could.

I am so proud of my younger sister who I had thought would try to brestfeed but give up too quickly. She nursed her little one until he was 1 and she was pregant with number 2 and she was working full time. She is a milk machine!! I wish I could have been more like her.

If I won this prize I would hand it over to my co-worker who is pregnant and is on bedrest for pre-term labor right now. She was life flighted out of Gunnison to a hospital in Colorado Springs, where they could deliver a baby at 33 1/2 weeks about 2 weeks ago. She has one more week to go and she will be at 36 weeks and able to deliver this little one.

  69. What a neat prize. I try breastfeeding every child, and have succeeded for about 6 months each kid. Hopefully when i have my next one I will last longer, but my sister and sister in law are both expecting.. that would be a cool prize!
    Liz

  70. I think the very most important aspect to breastfeeding is learning to relax and realize that you are learning a new art. It takes patience and practice to get that your new precious one latched on right, but if you talk to them, tell them to open wide, and be willing to gently take them on and off again until they get a really good latch it makes all the difference in the world. Be patient with each other, work together, and learn this new "dance". I know it hurts like crazy sometime but you will be rewarded in time, it is beautiful!
Don't be afraid to ask for help, as weird as it may seem to some, having another mom show you how to get a baby to latch on and keep them on can help so very much.

  71. I really wish they'd had the Healthy Baby Bounty Bag at my hospital! I had a great experience, they were supportive of my desire to breastfeed and all, but I could have used a few resources afterwards!

Although, I was glad I had a bit of formula to tide my baby over till my milk came in...

  72. I'm breastfeeding my little man and it is fantastic, except that I haven't found a really great nursing bra (or many good nursing tops) yet, so that is a bit of a challenge. It would be great to win this and have a new bra to try - and to purchase more of if I like it!

  73. That is a cool giveaway bag from the hospital. I am glad that they are figuring out a way to attempt to support breastfeeding. I thought it was kind of silly that they gave me a bag full of formula and formula related items when I had just finished telling them that I was going to only breastfeed.

  74. With my first daughter I tried breastfeeding, but she never took to it. My pediatrician just said not to offer her anything else but the breast and when she got hungry enough she would take it. That seemed a bit cruel to me, making your baby suffer when you know she is hungry. So eventually after all the frustration and depression I finally just gave it up as a lost cause. I just used a double electric pump to pump as much as I could for a couple months and then fed her formula.

With my second daughter, it was also a challenge and there were times(especially in the middle of the night, when she would wake up hungry and I would have to sit there and listen to her cry while I pumped so that I could feed her because the extra I got during the day never seemed to be enough to last all night. I was pumping at this point because both my nipples were bleeding from latching issues, I think her mouth might have been too small for my nipples. However I just used some Lanolin cream and pumped until they healed and then after that it was a dream and all my hard work and pain paid of...maybe a little too well, because here I am 17 weeks pregnant and she it 2 years old and still breastfeeding. I am ready to stop and she has cut down to maybe two feedings a day on a good day.

I can really see a difference between the two health wise, as my first daughter was sick a lot more and my second daughter had one ear infection and maybe two colds since she was born. IT is so rare that she is sick that when she does get sick it tends to worry me much more than when my first daughter gets sick.

I plan on breastfeeding number three, it is so much easier in the end to only have two or three bottles and to just breastfeed than get a bottle ready, especially in the middle of the night.

  75. OH, yes! Now that I'm expecting #3 (and the news is out now, by the way...no more secrets!) this would be expecially useful! :) I used Lansinoh pads with my first two, and they are AWESOME! I'm also in need of new nursing bras, since most of mine saw their way through two children and need to be pitched.
