Natural Cold Remedies for Kids

sneezyCoughy. Stuffy. Sneezy. Wheezy.

What do you do when one of your little munchkins gets a cold?

Before turning to medications (which we have *never* administered to our 2-year-old daughter and which we rarely use ourselves), I always try to think of home remedies first.

raising baby greenDr. Alan Greene, one of my favorite "celebrity" physicians and author of the incredible book Raising Baby Green, has an excellent article entitled Alternatives to Cold Medicines on his website.

I especially appreciated this quote: "It’s worth remembering that what we think of as cold symptoms are mostly tools the body uses to get rid of the virus. A low-grade fever...activates our immune system. Congestion is the dilation of blood vessels, bringing needed supplies to the scene of the battle. Coughing and sneezing forcefully eject the virus from the body. Fatigue helps you get the rest you need to heal. The goal of any treatment is to gently do what it takes to make a child comfortable while the body does its healing work."

In essence, our bodies take good care of us. We don't need to immediately turn to cough syrup. In fact, Dr. Greene doesn't recommend over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for kids under age 6.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a similar stance: "The AAP strongly recommends that over-the-counter cough and cold medications not be given to infants and children younger than 2 years because of the risk of life-threatening side effects. Also, several studies show that cold and cough products don't work in children younger than 6 years and can have potentially serious side effects."

vicks germfree humidifierGreene recommends Vitamin C, plenty of rest, and humidified air as three great ways to treat colds...naturally.

Vicks offers a wide variety of humidifiers for you to choose from if you decide to use humidified air as a remedy.

We have the Vicks GermFree Humidifier (which has a 4 1/2 star rating on Amazon.com and retails for $99.99). It features a pure sanitized warm mist that kills up to 99.999% germs, mold, and bacteria in the water, plus 2 tanks for easy filling and longer run times. Vicks actually has a total of 6 humidifiers to choose from. Fortunately, we haven't had to use ours yet (we're all pretty healthy around here), but I will definitely turn to it next time we get the "ah-choos" or the "runnies" in our house.

Vicks also sells a wide variety of thermometers and vaporizers.

  2. The vicks product has been in my famiy for years, so I no it is the best. I would love to try this one too !!!! Thank You.

  3. I use vicks humidifier in my 2 1/2 yr old room at night. So far this year..YES THIS YEAR..he has had bronchitis and then bronchial pneumonia...now we are battling the common cold. I LOVE the Vicks Cold Rub. I use that on my little boys chest, back and feet when he is sick. It does work wonders. (we also battle with allergies and asthma)...

    Thanks.

  4. I use Vicks vapo Rub on the bottoms of my feet to relieve coughing. I was given the hint by my mother in law and thought it was silly until I got a nagging cough and tried it. I slept great.

  5. I'd love to win these Vicks products. I have always had success getting rid of colds using Vicks products in the past and I think these products would really come in handy especially since we are in the middle of cold and flu season and flu season has been pretty bad in my state. I know the products will help me get rid of colds again. This is a great giveaway. Thanks.

  6. I think we use Vick's in our vaporizer at least four times a year during cold season. Since we're in a humid environment anyway, this looks like something we would welcome. Thanks so much!

  7. I like Vicks products, they work great. I really want to try the Vicks Soothing Vapors Plug-In Waterless Vaporizer and Nightlight. Thanks for having the contest!

  8. Vick's is a name I trust, have been brought up on it since a child and some 50 yrs later still trusting it. I'd like to be entered for this and ty. skyxsky27(at)gmail.com

  9. It seems like my daughter always has a cold. We use a Vicks humidifier but she hates it when I rub Vicks cream on her. I think the vaporizer would come in handy because then she wouldn't smell like Vicks just the air.

  10. At the preschool we use a standard underarm thermometer. The children do not like to sit still and it makes it difficult to get an accurate temperature. Thank you

  11. My family has relied on Vicks all my life. I can only use it a little now, because of my husband's allergies. Hot chicken soup really works, too. I think it's holding your head over a hot bowl of steam that helps.

  12. i so wish i has this right now i have been so congested since yesterday.right now im using a family dollar brand menthol rub but it does not seem to be helping..

  13. this would be so great in Our home right now We are on DAY 10 of the 3 of Us with different forms of the flu. We think it is gone and back it comes in a differet way....ear aches, fever, aches, coughes, pain and it goes on not a great way to spend the days....

  14. I heart vicks....seriously...my husband can't stand the smell but when I'm sick its the only thing that helps me breathe.
We use a humidifier in my son's room when he is sick but I'm always confused as to which is better....warm or cold...do you know?

  15. We need a thermometer so badly. I used to have like 10 of them but now am left with only the old mercury rectal thermometer that my mom thought I HAD to have when I was pregnant and I never used. I would love to win this!

  16. We always use Vicks products when my son is stuffy. It would be great to get a new thermometer too! Thanks for the chance!

  17. I sure wish they had this when my daughter was little. I've been using Vicks products since I was a child. Great to have on hand for when the next cold hits.

  18. This would be great to put in my granddaughter's room as she is prone to colds and stuffiness. I've always used Vick's products myself so think this would help her out quite a bit.

  19. My grandma was always a strong believer in the power of vicks! I have carried on her tradition! this would be great! thanks!

  20. We run a humidifier but I think we need a new one or at least a new filter because it isn't working very well - basically, we just wait out the cold the best we can!

  21. I would love to win these products. They would provide some needed protection for my family against colds and viruses.

  22. I turn to natural remedies anytime I can as well. We're in the market for a new humidifier too since we gave ours to my grandma who is in a nursing home.

  23. I could use this for my youngest son who always seems to have the sniffles! He is way to young for meds and the vaporizer we have has seen better days!

  24. We have a similar humidfier in the living room, but this one would be great for the bedroom while sleeping at night. I don't know how many times I wake up with very dry nose!

  25. Vicks Soothing Vapors Plug-In Waterless Vaporizer and Nightlights would be wonderful for my grandson when he gets stuffed up from a cold. I like the added feature of a night light and quiet operation.

  26. This is something I have seriously needing! My son and husband have asthma and serious seasonal allergies! The nurse at his school and his doctor have been telling me that a Vaporizer would really help. I trust your name, so I would trust your product!

  27. I love vaporizers but I'm always worried about leaving them in the kids room (between a cat and two kids there's no telling whether or not it will get knocked over!) These would be perfect!

  28. Someone in the house is almost always getting sick! This would be used a lot in my house! :) Thank you for this chance.

  29. We are more of a natural family. Actually when we took our son to his 2 year check up our new pedi was surprise that he hadn't been to the office for sick visit, only well visit.

  30. A Speed Read thermometer would be so greta to have when you have a squirmy baby. It just would make life easier! And I didn't know there was sucha thing as a Vicks GermFree Humidifier! This is wonderful how it kills germs! Fantastic!

  31. I love humidifiers. They are great for adding moisture to the air during cold, dry winter months. No more nose bleeds!

  32. I really try to avoid giving Christopher any cold medicines. I usually try a cold mist humidifier and that seems to help, but I think the Vicks Soothing Vapors would really help hime when he is stuffy!

    Thanks for the contest!

  33. Thanks for this great giveaway! I love just about all of the Vick's products i've ever tried, and love the idea of a vaporizer and nightlight in one!

  34. I love Vick's products and have a humidifier myself. I definitely use it when my kids have a cold and rub some cream on their chests for cough and congestion.
I agree with you that unless necessary, children should not be given medication. I have never given cough syrup to either of my children because of the suggestions of the AAP.
    Thanks for the contest!!

  35. I could really use this when I have my LO. A humidifier is on my list of things to get so it would be a blessing to win one. Money is tight around here.

  36. We recently had a scary bout of croup and while it was only one night, it was horrible. I've been reluctant to get a humidifier for colds because of the germ factory they usually are, but I sure wish I had the Vicks Germfree the other night (water takes way too long to boil when your kid can't breathe!!)

  37. I don't believe in medications first either. I always prefer alternatives. These products sound like an excellent alternative. Thank you.

  38. I could have used this for my kids but I'll settle for winning it for my grandsons. They have radiators and their bedrooms are so dry!

  39. We already use some of these items for my husband who works with construction materials all day and they work great. We are just getting ready to stockpile these items for the baby's room.

  40. I've been needing a humidifier. My kids would have benefited when they had the flu last week. The Dr. said by keeping moisture in the air, helps prevent the spreading of the virus. I'm so glad my kids are both over the flu that ended up turning into 2ndary infections...one with Bronchitis, and the other with pneumonia. We have a lot of homework to make up for. Thanks for the free products that can be used during the flu season.

  41. I would like to try the plug in vaporizer for my grandaughter. I love vicks in the winter months for head colds and I just told my daughter-in-law to try it for my grandaughter. usually works great for me!

  42. I still use Vicks whenever I have a cold. The scent actually is comforting to me and my kids. It really clears up the nose when you are stuffed!

  43. vicks is always on hand in our house....it seems as though we go from one cold to another. we could always use more here.

  44. I could really use these. My 3 children always seem to be fighting stuffy noses. I would put one in each of their rooms.

  45. I was not aware of a "waterless" vaporizer, let alone a plug-in. I'd love to try these because, if they only work half as well as claimed, we could use these in virtually every room.

  46. I have six children and it seems there's always a cold among one of them. This would be nice to have to help alleviate the cold problems. Thanks.

  47. One thing I remember from being sick as a kid is the smell of Vicks. Just the smell made me feel better, made me feel like I was getting well.

  48. Vicks has been a staple in my medicine cabinet for years and I remember the days when my Mom would rub us down with it. I havent tried the plug ins and would love to! Thanks!

  49. Thank you for the giveaway! I'm dying to try these, I have a lot of problems with colds and sinuses and my vet actually recommended these for my cat's allergies!

  50. i live in michigan and the weather here dramatically changes day to day.
which in turn, leaves my daughter with a slight cold almost all winter long.

i would love to have these products to help fight off her colds.

  51. A Vicks SpeedRead thermometer is just the thing! I have a lot of trouble reading those glass type thermometers that you have to turn so that the light hits it just right.

  52. It seems like when when of us gets sick, we all shortly get sick. I think the vicks products would help us from being sick.

  53. Oh goodness. I would so live to have those plug-ins right now. I just came down with a wicked cold and my lungs feel all gunked up. Sigh, I could use some of those fabulous Vicks Vapors right now!

    seattlevess at gmail.com

  54. Allergies run rampant in my household, and the cold season is here...so this would be the perfect time to try the Vicks Soothing Vapors plug-ins. Thank you for this opportunity! :-)

  55. I too, try to stay away from over the counter medications for colds as much as possible...especially cough syrups. I don't even like to take them myself. This vaporizer would be great to help them sleep better when they have a cold. thanks for the giveaway.

  56. I shy away from medicines unless they are truly necessary, with cold meds, it is hard to get just the medicine you want and not all the other medicines you don't need. I am a big fan of chest rubs, a good way to get those helpful vapors without ingesting anything.

  57. We have been so lucky the past few years that no one has suffered to greatly from colds or the flu. I'd love to try the vaporizer out for my husband. He suffers from allergies and I think this would greatly help him at night to keep his sinuses clear.

  58. Wow! Never heard of this. This would be awesome -- we retired our old humidifier after a funky, stale smell began emitting from it.

    Thanks for the chance!

  59. It seems that my daughter has been congested all winter. These plug in vaporizers may be the answer. I had not heard of them previously.

  60. This would be a great shower gift for my step dad's baby. I might even keep one for myself! :) thank you for the giveaway!

  61. As a pharmacist, I love the move towards safer children's products for colds. Vicks has been tested and true for generations.

  62. I really like the plug in vaporizers from vicks. My kids always seem to have a stuffy nose in the winter and these are a big help!

    daytonat1(at)yahoo(dot)com

  63. Oh lordy I could use this. I haev a 4 month old and 5 year old, and my baby is always congested! I couldn't live without humidifiers and would love to win this to help out also!

  64. Sorry to follow up on my own post, but I meant I don't use it on my KIDS and I myself only use it maybe once a year :)

  65. I dont use cold medicine either, and I've only used it when I can't breathe or sleep. I rely on my neti-pot but for my kids, you can't beat the vaporizer with some vicks to help them!

  66. Thanks for the contest and chance at winning. After just going through a 8 days in a row of an 11-month old being sick, I could really use something like this.

  67. Great Blog on children's natural remedies.

There is a new product that has been shown to be safe and effective for children 1 and older. It is called Honey Don’t Cough, you should check it out and let parents know about it. http://www.honeydontcough.com

  68. We never have a thermometer either around when we need one. Also the Vick's plug in sound interesting. I am used the to big humidifiers and a splotch of Vicks under the nose to help you sleep!

  69. We seem to never be able to find a thermometer at our house. Vicks makes great products and we've used them for years.

  70. We've been sick so many times this winter, it's not even funny. ugh. Vicks provides such breathing relief, I'd love to win these.

  71. Between me, my boyfriend and my nieces, I go through a lot of tissues and I love the Puff's with Vicks. I use the Vicks vapor rub on my nieces a lot, they've both been so sick this winter. Wick's definitely helps!

  72. We would love to win this prize. We have a five year old and a new baby. This time of the year it always feeld like someone has the sniffles.

  73. I love that the speedread thermometer takes less than 8 seconds to get a accurate result. It is so hard to get a kid to keep a thermometer under their tongue longer than that. Thanks for the giveaway!

  74. I've used Vicks brand products for decades. There are none that compare with the quality of relief and comfort you enjoy with Vicks.

  75. We all fret over a sick baby, but if we are so equiped with the latest more accurate tools in helping them fight their illness, it's such a calming and confidence building experience, especially for a new mom. Thanks for such a great giveaway!

  76. Being away at college doesn't allow me to have my Mom's tender touch when I'm not feeling good, these would certainly be helpful.

  77. Very smart idea. My dad use to put Vicks in water and boil it on the stove, with a towel over his head. That was in the good old days. He should have invented this.

  78. i have grandkids who have allergies and this would work great for them. I am from the "old school" and believe vicks really helps on colds thank you for the chance to win

  79. If you're going to be in heated homes that get so dry, you really need a humidifier! It helps your nose and throat stay healthy so much. I also love Vicks...my dad would put a little under his nose at night, and I've pretty much taken up the practice, too. It helps my nose stay unstuffed and reminds me of him :)

  80. What neat items! I'd never seen any of these before but they would be perfect for my youngest who is suffering her first cold away from home in her dorm room!

  81. We use a humidifier during the winter when we have a fire going in our house - it keeps the air moist. Without one I get a terrible sore throat and nose. So I could definitely put this to good use! Thanks!!

  82. I love Vicks products. They are so soothing when I have a cold and feel stuffy. Last winter I bought one of the vaporizers and it is fabulous!

  83. Thanks for the great tip on the GermFree Humidifier. I've been wanting to get a humidifier but was worried about the potential to grow mold. I will be getting this Vicks one.

  84. What a great idea - the vaporizers you can plug into outlets. I am not a fan of filling up humidifiers, then adding vaporizers. It's a pain, and I am always nervous about water sitting around in the house. Thanks!

  85. This would be great to win!! I find when I have cough drops and cold remedies in the house, I don't get sick!
So winning this prize would be a win-win situation - either I don't get sick and don't need it, or I get sick and I have what I need to treat it, LOL!

  86. We're still TTC but I personally will try everything before taking medicine. I just don't want my body to relay on a pill to fix it when it should be doing it on it's own.

  87. Ughh, my whole family just got over a nasty cold! This would have really come in handy! I would love to win this! Thanks for the great giveaway!
    janine at lovegiveaways.com

  88. I remember the days when I was a kid, got sick and then my mom would get the vicks and a big pot of hot water standing on a chair leaning over with a towel over my head. Too bad they didn't have waterless plugs-ins back then. It would have made my mom's life a lot easier.

  89. Professional accuracy
    30-second temperature readout
    Waterproof for easy, thorough cleaning
    On-off button for easy control
All that makes for a quality product

  90. My nine year old who goes to school is always bringing home germs to my three year old. So this would come in handy for both my daughter and son. Actually all of us have been coughing here and hope to get rid of our colds soon.

  91. I remember our old fashioned vaporizers when I was a little girl. I'm sure they were horribly unhealthy, but I liked the smell of the Vicks! Thanks for the giveaway!

  92. I used a humidifier in my kids room. They've been bringing home colds from school this winter and it helps to quiet coughs at night. They seem to feel better in the morning after using the humidifier at night. We also use Vicks Vap-o-rub to open up breathing. I use the kids version too.

  93. I remember my mom using a hot stem humidifier that had a little container to hold Vicks Vaporub; it helped a lot but the hot steam is such a danger to kids (and sleepy adults). I think the Vicks night light is the perfect solution.

  94. My kids have both been sick for a couple of weeks. My nearly two-year-old had RSV and the new baby had a bronchiol infection that we are so lucky hasn't turned into RSV. I am sure that they are doing as well as they are because I borrowed a humidifier so we have one in both of their rooms. I'd love to win this so we wouldn't have to borrow any more. I think these would be great to use all winter long.

  95. I really need these items at my home, especially since my son has chewed the tip of our current thermometer and it barey works anymore. Thanks for the contest.
susan dot lochkart at gmail dot com

  96. Vicks Vapo Rub will always bring back memories of when I was a child and had a cold and my Gramma would rub it on my chest and a little under my nose. Then she would set up the vaporizer, bring me homemade chicken noodle soup and give me the gentlest TLC! Thank you for the contest!

  97. my grandaugther has asthma, and when she gets a cold, she has asthma attacks, alot, plus 4 month old twins in the house, when the twins got sick recently with cold, i had my daugther put them in the bathroom and run the shower , she said it worked great. we have been trying to get a vaporizer, but money is sooooo tight, thanks for this give away, also if you rub your feet with vicks at night and put on warm socks, it helps stop the coughing and helps you sleep. it works ive tried it!!!

  98. I have seen those plug-in vaporizers at the store. We live in an apartment - it is very dry. We wake up with scratchy throats and stuffy noses. I wonder if this would help??????

  99. I adore vicks. I have three kids. Two of them are twin toddlers and I swear every time we leave the house and go in public they get a cold. I feel like I have to keep them in a bubble. Anyway, it helps make the air so much more breathable when you throat and lungs hurt.

  100. Have you tried the plug-ins? I was telling my girlfriend about them and she said she had read that putting medicine like that in the air is actually harmful to infants?

    autumn398 (at) yahoo.com

  101. I would love to win this. We tried the Soothing Vapors plug in waterless vaporizer last week when my daughter and I had colds. They really do work. I would love to get some more.

  102. I would love to have these! This is the first year my daughter has had a flu shot, and she has been sick soooo many times this year! Great giveaway!

  103. I would love to win this for my son! Vicks is about all you can do when they are under 4! Thanks for having the giveaway!

  104. We have 4 kids and we use Vicks in our house especially during cold season. It really seem to help them breathe better.

  105. I really believe in humidifiers when trying to treat colds. It would be great to have one from such a reputable brand that I know is a good product.

  106. I love Vicks. I use Vicks vaporub everytime I get a cold. I put a dab on my pillowcase and a tiny bit just above my upper lip. Works wonders unstuffing my nose.

  107. Vicks is wonderful. I have heard that putting it on your feet at night and then wearing socks can be helpful for a cold, though I have not tried it yet.

  108. We love Vicks when our little pea is sick. We have also found that a spoonfull of honey really helps calm her cough so she can sleep.

  109. Humidfiers are great to use in the bedroom or anywhere in the home. I like mine in the bedroom! I breath so much better! I like to walk into the bedroom with one running and smell the moist air. Right now I don't have a good one.

  110. all very useful for cold season. Right now we use a cold mist humidfier every night because it is so dry out.

  111. everyone on my block has had a cold/flu like we are passing it house to house right now!
so i would love to win

  112. These would come in handy at my house. We have had two bouts of nasty colds so far this year. And it is hard on my grandson because he is only one and can't take any cold meds. But he has been using the Vicks vaporub for kids!

  113. When I was kid the only things my mom gave me when I had a cold were tylenol and Vicks. It has always been the one thing that made a stuffy nose feel better without feeling "drugged". Any product Vicks makes is one I would trust. Would love these products.

  114. I could have used this last week. My whole family had some nasty colds. I've used Vicks for many years for myself, and it would be great to try some of their products made for the little ones.

  115. I have never used any vicks products. Would be a great way to try them. My kids would benefit greatly from the plug ins. Thanks for the chance.

  116. Love vicks--I heard if you rub the stuff on your feet, it has the same effect as rubbing on your chest! Haven't tried that.......

  117. Vicks Vapor Rub has been a mainstay in our home since we first got married, as it was when I was growing up. It would be nice to try some of the new generation products that Vicks has to offer.

  118. I am getting over my third cold of the season. I actually had to break down and go to the doctor for antibiotics (per my husband's request). Turns out I have had bronchitis. As an adult, I still use Vicks Vapor Rub to help me breath when my lungs fill up with gunk.

  119. Just an FYI on humidifier use: I thought it was a good thing to use for a cough, BUT our pulmonologist said that it actually makes the lungs work harder to breathe. He suggested keeping the overall humidity level in our home at an average level but NOT having a humidifier in our daughter's room.

  120. I have been wanting to try these products. This house is so dry and when you add a cold to that well, we are just miserable so this could be the answer we need.

  121. I need this so badly, my 2 and 14year old had the worse fever this weekend and it took me forever to get the reading of the thermometer.

  122. Oh my! We could use this! My daughter gets sick quite often and I have thought about purchasing something like this!

    Thanks!

  123. I've been wanting to try these plugins. I have a vicks humidifier and I dont remember how I got through winter without it! Definitely makes colds and infections easier to deal with.

  124. I have been meaning to get a humidifier for my daughters room since we use heat in the winter and it dries out the air so much! It is a great way to try to prevent or treat common winter colds!! Thanks so much for your giveaway!!

  125. I really love Vicks products, they always do the job. The vapor rub has saved us so many times when the kids had bad coughs.

  126. Our grandchildren are in day care/kindergarten. They are ALWAYS suffering from colds, sniffles, etc. The two oldest are having their adenoids removed in March. Until then, they both always breathe through their mouth - especially at night.
This would be a great help.

  127. I've been curious about these. I wonder if I plugged one into my kids' room, if they would manage to leave it alone?? ;) But it would be nice to try them, truly!

The only thing that I always feel a need to medicate is a stuffy nose. From personal experience, the inability to breathe through my nose is the most horrific experience, especially when your throat is dry and scratchy and you just want to *sleep* already, but it feels impossible to breathe comfortably. I agree with the idea that medicating a cold reduces the body's ability to get rid of the virus... but in the end I'm always reaching for the nose spray and sighing in relief when I can finally breathe normally again.

But for my kids, I never feel comfortable giving them anything but extra vitamin C, some herbal tea, or simply extra rest and cuddles. Kids must be a lot more resilient than I am, because their constantly dripping noses never seem to annoy them like I would expect.

  128. this would be so great! my 2 yr old gets stuffy a lot and has also inherited her daddys allergy problems so this would be a lifesaver to us! the FDA has me too scared to give her any OTC drugs!

  129. I get so 'sick' of using cold medicines and just feeling worse (groggy, tired, etc...) I love that this is a safe and side-effect free way to feel better fast!

  130. my husband and i bought the vicks humidifier while we were vacationing at his parents' home in washington state over christmas. sadly, it was too big to fit into our suitcase on the way home so we left it behind. i would love to win this giveaway!

  131. I have been wanting to try these plug-ins, especially in our boys' rooms. All of us already use Vicks Vapor Rub in place of cold medicines when we can. This also sounds like a great alternative.

  132. This looks like a great product. Kids have been having colds like crazy this winter. Would love to have one of these.

  133. It is definitely cold/flu season in my town. My youngest daughter (13 years) had 7 kids out of her class last week from either a cold or a flu. Now, my daughter is home with head congestion and a low-grade temperature. Vicks helps wonderfully with my daughter, since she hates the taste of liquid medicines. Plus, I prefer not to medicate her unless I have to.

  134. I really try and stay away from using pain or cough meds until it's just necessary. Have you any experience with sinuprat (?)? I've thought of giving that a try next time my son has a sinus problem.
