Nursing Clothes Review: Japanese Weekend

japanese weekend logo

As I mentioned in a previous post, nursing clothes are not a necessity...but they can be very nice. Especially in circumstances that may require you to nurse in public (example: taking a trip by plane).

I know some women feel comfortable nursing anytime, anywhere - but I'm a more private person. If I am out-and-about, I much prefer to nurse in a dressing room, a designated nursing lounge, or in my car. Or, at the very least, I use my Bebe Au Lait nursing cover.

Nursing clothes offer extra modesty because they allow you to show less skin...and less tummy (that's an especially good thing for the first few months postpartum...).

Japanese Weekend is the 5th brand of nursing clothing that I have reviewed and I can honestly say that it is the very best of the ones I have tried. Other brands tend to offer clothing that is too tight/form-fitting or too rigid, but JW pieces are buttery soft and more "forgiving" when it comes to covering up the postpartum belly.

luxe jersey maternity and nursing camiThe luxe jersey maternity and nursing cami ($60) is probably my favorite piece. The material is breathable, soft, and "cool" - perfect for summer weather! The double strap makes the top "interesting" and the layered look is so modern. I love that top is fitted, yet not clingy.

vintage knit v-neck japanese weekendThe vintage knit v-neck nursing top ($59) will probably be the "most-worn" of the items that I was sent to review because of its classic appeal and simplicity. Paired with jeans, it's perfect for a busy mom on a casual day.

d&a nursing hoody orange japanese weekendThe hug a boo d&a nursing hoody ($70) is soft and flattering. It's simple and doesn't attract much attention - which is good for a nursing mama who may not want her body to be the "center of attention."

hug a boo side shirred cami japanese weekendThe hugaboo side shirred nursing cami ($60) was probably my least favorite of the samples that I received. The emerald green color is positively radiant (I LOVE it!), but the material isn't quite as soft as the other tops and it's a bit too fitted around the stomach area. The cami also "plunges" quite low - which is probably my biggest "complaint." As a mom, I don't feel comfortable showing quite that much skin...especially because I want to be an example of modesty and "class" to my daughters.

Overall, I am thoroughly impressed by the JW collection. I'd love to see JW design more pieces in rich "jewel" colors (wine, forest green, plum, navy, etc.) and bright, non-pastel colors (orange, red, pink, etc.). And I'm always a fan of v-necks, scoop necks, and off-the-shoulder pieces.

YOUR TURN: Have you tried nursing tops/clothes? If so, what did you think (and what brands do you recommend)? If not, what would convince you to "give it a shot"?

WIN IT! One winner will receive her choice of one of the four nursing tops mentioned above. 1. Since I am in the small juniors sizes, nursing tops never fit how I'd like for them to. I've done fine without them. Maybe next time around I'll be able to enjoy them.

  2. I did buy a few nursing tops, gowns and dresses. I find that it's much easier to nurse in them...however...I don't know what to do with them afterwards since they're not the most stylish (at least not the ones I bought)
BTW...my friend is due ANY DAY! LOL! : )

  3. I've tried some tanks and they are ok except they don't always hide what I'm trying to hide, LOL.

  4. I've never purchased any nursing clothing other than nursing bras. I'm currently nursing twins and just wear shirts that I can pull up or unbutton. If I could find some that are not too expensive (none i've seen have been within my budget) I would most definitely give them a try. I'd especially love dresses for nursing moms :)

  5. I haven't tried nursing tops because I don't nurse, but my sister in law does and I would love to win this for her. She has zero nursing clothes right now, mostly because she's a new mom and hadn't thought about it, and I think she's hoping to wear her old clothes (don't we all wish?).

  6. I sooooo love nursing my 18 month old ds. And.....don't laugh, but I call him my LUSCIOUSLY VORACIOUS MILKY MONSTER because he loves to nurse with wild abandon! Nursing is the most amazing communication I've ever experienced with another being before.

And, I can fully attest that Japanese Weekend makes the best Nursing Tops! : )))

Thanks so much for this fabulous give~away! : )))

  7. These items are so stylish. My mother in law bought me a few sleeveless tanks from motherhood maternity a few years back and now that my second one is on the way I found them with the tags still on because they just were so blah and short. I felt like my belly would show. These are a great improvement for nursing mothers.

  8. They all look so nice. I like the hoodie and the luxe cami. I've read about this company before and they look super high quality.I would love to try one. My nursing shirts are so frumpy.

  9. The HugaBoo hoodie looks really cute! These items all look comfortable and fashionable. Thank you for the chance to enter. :-)

  10. Expecting my first baby in a few weeks and really need anything nursing related. I would love the Vintage Knit Nursing Top. Looks comfy. Thanks.

  11. I've been nursing for three years straight, and still going. I have yet to find a nursing top that works better than a plain old t-shirt, but I have to admit that the t-shirt look isn't the most fashionable. These look like they might be soft enough and cute!

  12. These look great! I especially like the hug a boo d&a nursing hoody. I have had the worst time finding appropriate nursing clothing--and these certainly look like a great solution. Thanks for the introduction!

  13. I have never tried nursing tops but would love to. They look like they will make it a little bit easier to stay covered while nursing. I really like the vintage knit v-neck.

  14. These nursing tops look wonderful. It's so hard to find something that works well. I think every woman likes something different. The hug a boo hoodie looks comfy and functional.

  15. I don't think I could have survived without my nursing tank tops. I got a bunch at Target and just lived in them all summer. These clothes are much nicer and would be more fun to wear - the investment is definitely worth it if you plan to nurse for awhile!

  16. Nursing clothing is a whole new thing I've recently been considering. I'm due with my first little girl in June and am trying to prepare. I'm wondering how a nursing top can fit correctly- I have a hard enough time finding clothes that fit correctly that don't have purposeful wholes or quick releases in them. This concept seems crazy and yet practical at the same time. I would really love to try to high quality brand to see if I can find something that may work for me and my daughter!

    THANKS

  17. Around the house, I don't bother with nursing shirts, but they sure are nice when you're in public. I have a few tops I got from Motherhood maternity, and have found them to be really useful, but they aren't as cool looking as these. I'd love to win the first one.

  18. I love the hoodie, it's casual looking and can be worn anywhere. I've been eyeing this line for some time, and would love to try out JW apparel.

  19. I'm expecting baby #1 and really want to try to nurse and think these clothes would be a great asset--they seem convenient and stylish at the same time. Thanks so much for the opportunity!

  20. I have tried a few nursing tops, but none that I really cared for. I didn't like the ones with the built in bras, since they never seemed to fit right with the increase in breast size from nursing. I would like to try the vintage v neck top since summer is coming soon.

  21. I used mostly Target (liz lange) stuff or things from the consignment store because of living on a tight budget but I would love to try JW!

  22. I find that vintage knit v-neck nursing top very appealing. Looks comfortable too. wombatspurple at yahoo dot com

  23. I lived in my nursing tops and tanks for the 22months that I nursed! I loved Japanese weekend and one other european brand that I can't think of and you didn;t mention!! I'd love a new one for our next one!

  24. No, I've never tried nursing tops/clothes. I can definitely say after seeing all of the modern styles and choices that are available, I would be willing to give them a try.

  25. My sister-in-law would love this. I went through nursing with regular tops and what a mess. I had to throw them all away from milk stains, and they all streched out from pulling them down over my breast. Would have been great to own one of these.

  26. I am trying to get pregnant now and I will be nursing, so I definetly need nursing apparel. All I ask is that it's stylish and comfortable!

  27. I have a couple of nursing tops but so far none that I love. I do as well with oversized t-shirts. But my best nursing bra is one from Japanese weekend, so I'd love to try their tops!

  28. I don't really have any nursing-specific clothes, but I would love to try something that would allow me to stop wearing nothing but button-down shirts!

  29. I am a nursing mom and haven't had the funds to purchase many nursing tops this time around unfortunately. I would love to win the luxe jersey maternity and nursing cami that you reviewed. I agree that this will be the perfect style and look for summer and I will definitely be nursing my little girl throughout this summer! I have still been wearing some of my maternity t-shirts, because I can fit my daughter under the shirt without any issue OR I will cover up with a blanket if I am out and about and wearing a "normal" shirt. A nursing top would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the great giveaway!

  30. I love the vintage nursing top. I had no nursing tops with my first. With the second on the way I could definitely use something easier than lifting up the entire shirt.

  31. After giving birth I went and bought one nursing (tank) top. I was all excited but after a while I was not so impressed and just wore it during the night. It was just too baggy, not very pretty and gave no support. I guess it was my fault, I'm the one who bought it!
The black tank seems really nice though and I'd love to give it a try.

  32. I would love to win a nursing top for my friend who is expecting. I never tried any nursing tops myself simply because I breastfed my daughter at home and gave her bottles in public, but I'm sure my friend would give it a whirl!

  33. I haven't actually tried any yet except the ones from Motherhood (so comfy) and would love to give other brands a whirl! Thanks for the contest!

  34. I'd choose the hugaboo hoodie. I've used nursing tops before but they've never fit me correctly. Maybe these would!

  35. I had such a hard time trying to find nursing clothes. There was a Japanese Weekend store in the mall but closed before I was pregnant :( I would have loved one of these!

  36. I like the vintage v neck. I bought 3 tees from Motherhood Maternity, but they are just okay. Not too fashionable. I still breastfeed so I would love to win!

  37. I think that all the newest nursing tops are so fantastic. I love how convenient they are and I don't know what I would do without them!

  38. I'd love to try the luxe jersey maternity and nursing cami! I nurse my children with a nursing cover and would love to not be showing the tummy! Thanks for the chance!

  39. I had a couple of "knock off" nursing tops that I picked up at a garage sale. I like the concept- but they were not great shirts. I would love to try finding better nursing tops to be more discreet in public- like in restaurants! I would love to have a nursing cami you mentioned. It seems so versatile!

  40. I had one nursing sweatshirt for my 1st babe, and it was awesome - esp for flights were I was so close to a stranger. These JW options are great and would be a good fit for me as I will have a summer nurser this time around!

  41. I have a few button up style nursing tops and love them, since I can layer them with camis/tanks and it still looks like I am wearing "normal" clothes.

  42. I have not bought many nursing tops. However, I did have a couple of Bravado nursing tanks/bras I used last time that I loved. I liked the convenience of being able to feed my son without flashing the world. I am due again in Sept, and open to all suggestions.

  43. I haven't because I didn't nurse with my first one; however, baby #2 is due in July and I will be nursing so I really need some nursing clothes.

  44. I haven't tried nursing tops yet, we are TTC so it is just a 'not yet' for me. I bet they are much more comfy and modest than just a regular top.

  45. I visited my grandmother in the Bay Area during my first pregnancy, and I was stunned to visit a Japanese Weekend store! I live in Arkansas, the land that fashion forgot, and I truly had no idea that pregnant women had such amazing options.

It' so encouraging to see these nursing options. Thank the Lord for the internet!

  46. Japanese Weekend has the most stylish nursing clothes I have seen. The nursing shirt I used looked uber-matronly and ugly. The fabric was poor quality. I think the nursing hoody would've been a staple in my post-partum wardrobe.

  47. I'm pregnant now, with my first, so haven't had a need for nursing gear yet. I think my main reason for buying nursing-specific clothes is convenience. If a top makes it easier to nurse in public, I'm all for it. Otherwise, my own clothes will probably do.

  48. I love my nursing tops and dresses! I have quite a few Motherwear tops and one of some other brand. I'd love to try a new brand!

  49. I wore nursing tanks and open-front hoodies/sweaters/blazers with #1, but I'd love to try something a bit simpler for #2.

  50. The luxe jersey maternity and nursing cami looks like something that would really get used. I like that the top is soft, cool and not clingy. Have they made the perfect summer nursing top or what!

  51. WHen you are nursing, you are sometimes mopey and feeling unattractive bc you are devoting your LIFE to feeding your baby. THIS would be awesome to lift those spirits!!!

  52. Im entering for my best friend. As far as I know she has never tried nursing tops. Im not sure if she's ever really known much about them.

  53. we don't have any nursing clothing but you don't have to convince us here b/c soon we will be having a baby and will need. Japanese Weekend makes beautiful clothing and this would be perfect to win.

  54. I love being able to find good nursing clothing, and having it be stylish can be so hard. These tops look and sound fantastic! I would love to win one.

Kind of on the topic, off the topic. I weaned my daughter from nursing because I was having a lot of pain with this pregnancy (long story) but these are my first non-nursing bras in 3.5 years. LOL!!!! So, you know, I basically live in nursing clothing. =) Thanks.

  55. My fav nursing tank is the Bravado nursing tanks. They support and are super easy to release. Also a little too fitted in the stomach area, but worth it for the ease & support. Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com

  56. I really like the nursing cami for my friend who is expecting. She is planning on breast feeding for as long as possible and this would really help her out.

    ferriza2[at]yahoo[dot]com

  57. I have never tried nursing shirts. I will probably be using them often once my twins are born however and I am sure they would make my life so much easier.

  58. I haven’t tried any nursing clothes, but I'd like to get some for my sister in law and these look like excellent choice!
    Thanks for the chance :)

  59. I never tried nursing tops before. Maternity & nursing clothes aren't that stylish so I'd change my mind if it's good-looking!

  60. I haven't tried any nursing clothes, but would love to try them. I don't mind nursing in public, but it would be nice to cover up my post baby gut!

  61. vintage knit v-neck nursing top is my favorite. I haven't ever tried nursing tops but would love to. I'm due with my second boy in June.

  62. While I don't wear much nursing-specific clothing, I do love to have a few pieces for the rare times I nurse in public. The cami looks sensational! Thanks for the giveaway!

  63. Ohhh that nursing cami looks so comfy! I'd love to try it, and I thank you for hosting this thoughtful giveaway :)

  64. I really like the hug a boo d&a nursing hoody and the vintage knit v-neck nursing top. I think that they are definite staples for a wardrobe.

  65. I totally love wearing nursing tops! I feel more covered & confident nursing around other people when I am wearing a nursing top. The brands I wear are Motherhood Maternity Nursingwear, Motherwear & Expressiva. I have not bought a Japanese Weekend Nursing Top, but would love to win one. I'm not sure which one I like the best-they are all cute!

  66. Good nursing clothes--actually made for nursing--are so hard to come by without breaking the bank. I've gotten by with normal clothes that pull up easily, but it would be nice to have something actually made FOR breastfeeding! It's really the lack of nursing-friendly DRESSES that gets to me!

  67. I would love to add one of these to the wardrobe that I don't have...okay thats not totally honest because I do have a glamormom nursing tank. It would be really nice though to have some cute nursing tops this time around.

  68. I haven't used nursing tops, only because I didn't want to spend the money (they are so expensive!). But, I would love to have been able to wear them! I'd love it if I didn't have to cover with a blanket so the world didn't see my exposed, still full of baby fat torso!

  69. Would you believe I have spent 13 yrs of my life producing milk and now have another newborn?
I recently bought two wrap nursing dresses from a company called ILM - I Love Mama. Very nice quality stuff.

  70. I don't really own any "nursing" clothes just because I don't go out much in public to nurse and if I do I just wear a button down shirt or a "loose" shirt that I can pull over to pop my milkbags out =) I'd love to try nursing clothing but i'm so tight with my money that I don't like to get specific clothes like that.

  71. Sadly I have to say that I have tried a lot of different types of nursing tops and have not been particularly pleased with any of them. I absolutely hated the motherhood one that I got, but the glamour mom top was ok, still wasnt perfect though. So far i have found that I like the thin kind of spandex tank tops from Costco to just wear under my regular clothes. They are super thin but really flexible so I can just pick up my top shirt and pull down the tank top, plus then the nasty after baby stomach is held in and covered up.

  72. these are some of the best looking maternity and nursing clothes out there, i dont like to spend a fortune on my maternity stuff, but some things are worth it! Thanks for showing yet another great clothing line!

  73. They only type of nursing clothing I have tried are the tank tops with a built-in nursing bra. I like that I can wear them under anything, and when I pull up the outer shirt to nurse, my tummy is hidden by the tank. I get mine at Target.

  74. I've always been a little more private, too, but it could be because I never purchased separate nursing gear! I'm due in 6 weeks and would love to try it! Thanks!

  75. I'd love to try out some new maternity clothing this time around--I wore my first baby bump wardrobe into the ground!

  76. I thought that giving a nursing gown at a baby shower would be sort of weird, but it was very much a treasured gift when I gave it. I also saw the mom using it a lot after the baby was born. These are such great presents and I'd love to win so I could be the hit of a baby shower again!!

  77. wow they are all gorgeous and useful...
I'm having a baby this summer...
    It'd be good to win...
    thanks for the chance...

  78. I usually think nursing tops look horrible, because the flaps are so obvious. These look really nice - I don't even see any flaps! :) Thanks!

  79. I have bought nursing shirts from Motherhood maternity for about $25 each - and I'm glad I did. I was so sick of wearing the same 5 shirts that would give me access! It really makes a difference. Nursing in public is a breeze. With the discreet slits, you honestly can't even see he is nursing! I love them and highly recommend the splurge! You are nursing and that is a huge commitment! Get yourself something to feel pretty and get the job done! :)

  80. The hug a boo™ slit front nursing top from their site looks great, too! I wasn't very prepared with nursing gear for my first baby (I nursed her for 9 months), but with the second I'll need to get some gear ahead of time. This stuff looks great, I'd love to try it!

    [email protected]

  81. I only was able to breastfeed my son for 9 months but I am going to try for at least 1 year with this baby. It is so important for their health!

  82. I plan to breastfeed our little adopted one, which is quick a tricky dance with extra equipment to make it work. so I would absolutely LOVE anything that would make our private moments a bit more discrete...and hey! it'd be great have a cute new top :)

  83. I'd definitely be interested in trying these. I've only tried a few nursing shirts and tanks, and I just wasn't impressed. Either because I thought they looked too much like nursing shirts or because they showed too much skin. I will keep these in mind!

  84. I am due in jsut 4 weeks, and I have not purchased any nursing tops yet. This would start me ont he right foot.

  85. I have a few nursing tops from Old Navy. I'm not a big fan of nursing tops in general as most have the criss-cross V thing on top which I don't like. I like the second layer with cut-outs underneath much better.

  86. I've never tried a nursing top before, but the idea sounds awesome! I've always wondered how so many woman breastfeed in public without everyone seeing the goods... I guess here's my answer!

  87. What I found worked the best for me when I was nursing Lily was a large cami-tank top and a regular top over that. I would lift the top shirt and my belly was still covered and then pull down the cami to pull my breast out for Lily. Nothing was showing that should not have been (no tummy, no breast, nothing!)

  88. With my first I never purchased any nursing clothes. But he was born in November so it was pretty easy to cover up since it was the dead of winter when I was nursing exclusively. By the time summer came he was eating solids and not nursing as much.

This time around I will be exclusively breastfeeding during the summer. I'm not looking forward to covering up in the hot sun so I would be interested in some nursing camis or tanks. Either of the two camis you just listed look like they would work perfectly. Here's hoping I'll win!

  89. Considering I'm trying to win this for my cousin's new babies' basket, I don't feel I'm qualified to really talk about nursing clothes. BUT. When I do have kids I plan on nursing them, because I think a mother's milk is the best thing you can give your kids. And if you're going to be doing that, you need clothes that are better for that lifestyle..something that allows you to nurse comfortably and easily and that fits very comfortably. I love that huga boo d&a nursing hoody...its sylish and just looks comfortable, and if I were a new mom, thats what I would want to wear!

  90. I think I would like the vintage knit v neck nursing top best as well. It is a cute look with great function. I had a hard time choosing though, they all are very pretty

  91. I really like the vintage knit v-neck, it is the kind of thing I would wear anyway... that fact that it is a nursing top too is just awesome.

  92. I LOVE the Vintage Knit V-Neck! I have a baby on the way...and this would be perfect for everyday wear! It's so cute too!

  93. Again, I went cheap with nursing items and opted mostly to wear my own clothes that are baggy, or zip/button in front. I have a nursing nightgown, a couple nursing bras and then 4 nursing tank tops. But there have been times that I've lamented not having more true nursing tops that I can wear out and about. The clothes that I do have and are workable with nursing, are very limited. Might be time for a shopping trip!

  94. The hug a boo d&a nursing hoody ($70)is nice, I'd love to win it for my daughter. I nursed all my kids, and they were rarely sick.
