Objective Information about Vaccines from Dr. Bob Sears

Objective Information about Vaccines from Dr. Bob Sears 1As you know from previous posts, I am a huge fan of the Sears family of physicians. They come across as warm and sincere rather than sterile and stodgy like so many MD's. I trust their advice and that's why I was overjoyed when Dr. Bob Sears wrote a book about vaccines this past year. It's an excellent, comprehensive, and objective book and I highly recommend it to all moms and moms-to-be.

Here's a transcript of my recent interview with Dr. Bob.

ME: When did you decide to become a doctor and why did you choose pediatrics?
DR BOB: I kind of always wanted to be a doctor…it seemed to come naturally to me. My dad encouraged us to become doctors. He always said we had the freedom to become whatever kind of children’s doctor we wanted. I love kids and I love parents.

ME: Were you vaccinated as a child and what memories do you have of the experience?
DR BOB: I was vaccinated, but I have no memory of it at all.

ME: You offer three different possible vaccine "schedules" in your book. Which did you use with your children and way?
DR BOB: I did a variety with all three kids. Overall, I don’t really share what I do with my own kids. I want parents to think for themselves. I wouldn’t want a parent to find out what I did and just do it blindly. [Interjection from ME - I LOVE this answer. I appreciate that Dr. Bob presents the facts, but then lets parents make the decision that is right for them.]

ME: Which "schedule" do you offer to patients in your clinic?
DR BOB: We offer the Alternative Schedule to everybody. We’re happy to give the full AAP schedule to them. We also have patients that don’t want any shots at all.

ME: Because it's flu season, I have to ask...What's your take on the flu shot for little ones?
DR BOB: It's a 50/50 thing in our office. I don’t just automatically give it to everyone. If a baby is breastfed and not in daycare/child care, I tend to not give the flu vaccine. If a baby is not breastfeeding or is in daycare/child care, I tend to give the flu vaccine.

  4. Ok, here is my second try let's see if I can figure this out! This is my first blog ever. I love the Sears family and would love to win this book. If I don't I will for sure buy it. We selectively vaccinate on a more delayed schedule when compared with the AAP schedule. We also tend to give one at a time rather than a whole bunch at once. Let's see if this blog works...

  5. Thanks for this interview and your review. Baby #3 is due any day now, and I've already decided to postpone the Hep B vaccine until two months, but am very interested in Dr. Sears' alternative schedule. We have a great pediatrician who I'm sure will cooperate once my husband and I decide what to do.

Yes, I'd love to be in your drawing! Thank you.

  6. Thanks for the giveaway Stephanie! I would love to win a copy of this book. I'm VERY leery of vaccines and because of this my son has only had a few. Plus, he's one of the healthiest toddlers I've ever been around!

  7. Stephanie,
I found your blog from your response to my Mom-Finds post about stylish plus size maternity and nursing clothes. Thank you SO much for that list! (I tried responding via e-mail but the mail was bounced back). It was so nice finding other options for maternity wear.

I'm very interested in this book. One of my nephews is autistic and though we are not sure of it's cause, certainly vaccines are suspect. I'm not sure what I will do with regards to vaccinations and our baby when we do deliver, but this book would be welcome in my library.

    Thanks so much (again),
    Olerica

  8. I really want to read this book! I have a 5 month old and we have been selective about what vaccinations he's received.

  10. Hey My Dear Staephanie,
I have never left a post on your blog, what a shame! I have read it for so long and have enjoyed it so much. What a fantastic, fantastic job you do. What a great thing to provide for mommies.
This is a great article. Immunizations are such a hot issue. It is very difficult to sort through all the info. Dr. Bob offers parents the tools they need to make sense of the options surrounding immun. That is so valuable when the opposite happens and parents make fear-based decisions, rather than informed decisions because they are not handed to tools needed to make sense of the issues.
    Good info. my friend!
