Product Review: Froose

Product Review: Froose 1I interrupt my normal blogging schedule to tell you about Froose, "an innovative new beverage for children that combines the best of organic whole grains and fruit to make a delicious and nutritious alternative to juice that is naturally low in sugar and a good source of fiber."

Froose® is different from other juices because it uses a whole grain base and it is sweetened with 100% fruit concentrates and organic brown rice syrup. Every 4.23 fl.oz. box contains 3 grams of fiber.

My daughter and I sipped the Froose juice shortly after we received it. She liked the taste. I liked it (it was much better than Motts for Tot's Apple White Grape Juice, which is icky and packaged in 6.75 fl.oz boxes. Way too much for a toddler or child under age 6! See AAP policy below...), but it was a bit too thick with sweetness. It almost tasted like nectar. I appreciated, however, the smaller box size...perfect for toddlers' hands and tummies.

In case you're wondering if your child is ready for juice, you might want to consider these statements from the latest policy about juice consumption by the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Juice should not be introduced into the diet of infants before 6 months of age.
  • Infants should not be given juice from bottles or easily transportable covered cups that allow them to consume juice easily throughout the day. Infants should not be given juice at bedtime.
  • Intake of fruit juice should be limited to 4 to 6 oz/d for children 1 to 6 years old.
  • Children should be encouraged to eat whole fruits to meet their recommended daily fruit intake.

Furthermore, the AAP states that, "100 percent fruit juice can be a healthy part of a child's diet, if it is provided in appropriate amounts. But excessive juice consumption is associated with malnutrition, diarrhea, stomach problems, and tooth decay."

Re-cap:
1. Froose is tasty and the 4.23 fl.oz. box is appropriate for 1 year olds and up.
2. Froose is healthy, or so the makers claim. But so does every other juice manufacturer. I wish I knew how to really break down the ingredient list on the labels.
3. I'd buy it again, but I wish they would "thin" it out a little bit and I'd like them to add other flavors (Apricot, for starters...).

Froose is very new and is making its way into brick-and-mortar locations slowly. Until you find it near you, you can purchase a variety of juice boxes online.
