Running Tips from Nicole DeBoom, Pro Triathlete 1
Running Tips from Nicole DeBoom, Pro Triathlete 2As many of you know, I recently started training for a 5K. I want to be in-shape, toned, and healthy...for my little girl, for my husband, for me. I feel so much better when I exercise and there are so many health benefits that I can't afford to not make time for it.

So, I've been running as it's the most cost-effective and time-efficient work-out there is. All I have to do is put on my running shoes, buckle my little beauty into the jogging stroller, and...we're off!

That said, I'm a new runner so I went to Nicole DeBoom, pro triathlete, for some expert advice. Here's a transcript of our conversation.

Me: I've never been much of a runner, but I'd like to get started. What plan do you recommend?

Nicole: I would start with a walking/running plan*** Go for the scheduled 3 days/week of running, building slowly and on 1-3 other days/wk add a cross-training activity to keep the body loose and keep the core strong. I’m a huge believer in a strong core. I do my push-ups and crunches while I travel and it really helps my overall fitness (5 sets of 10 push-ups/50 crunches).

Me: I'm training for a 5K, but I'm worried that I'll be "left in the dust" by athletic pros. Will I be embarrassed if I sign up? After all, I'm not very fast...

Nicole: Most people who participate in running events are of the “slower species” of runner! You will be surprised by how many walkers and walk/joggers you will see. There is absolutely NO need to be embarrassed. You will have a blast and you’ll find that you are passing more people than you expected, so cheer them on, they need your support just as much as you need theirs!

Aside from being a professional triathlete, did you know that Nicole is the Founder and CEO of SkirtSports, the "number one running skirt company?"

I just received my GymGirl Skirt last week. When I pulled it out of the package, I knew I was going to like it. The material is lightweight, soft, and breathable, yet also snug-fitting. The skirt comes with built-in compression mesh shorties with a pocket for your keys or your iPod. Plus, the skirt is incredibly cute. I actually feel pretty while I'm running.

If you're looking for a way to add some pizazz to your athletic wardrobe or if you want some clothes to help you get motivated, a running/biking/triathlon skirt might be just the thing. There are plenty of colors, styles, and lengths to choose from - and you can even get coordinating shirts and tanks.

From time to time, SkirtSports has awesome sales so be on-the-lookout. I'm not sure if they have a Thanksgiving or Christmas sale planned, but I definitely will be checking in from time to time. I think I'd like to buy another GymGirl in a different color - or maybe I'll get daring and try one with spankies underneath.

*** There's a great one from Health Magazine called Girls Gotta Move - that's the one I'm following. Right now, I'm up to alternating 4 minutes jogging, 2 minutes walking, for 30 minutes, four times a week.

  1. I love these running skirts and I really want one. I am not running now (7 months pregnant) but once I have the baby and start running again I will be looking to buy one. Don't worry about being passed by everyone. I have been running for 10 years and I am not a fast runner by any means. Whenever I enter a race my goal is to run the whole thing (no walking) and to not finish last - second to last is okay with me. I did do a 5K recently where I was last but hey I was 5 months pregnant at that time.
Take the running slow - run for a minute and walk for a minute if that is all you can do and eventually you will be running miles!

  2. Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

Ashley, don't let the prices discourage you because (a) SkirtSports has some smokin' sales every now and then, and (b) I just might have a giveaway in early 2008 where you can vie for your chance to win one of your own. Stay tuned!

P.S. I wish you lived next door and we could go running together!

  3. I wish I lived in an area conducive to running. Before I had kids, I ran five miles a day - 2.5 in the morning and 2.5 after work. But now we live off a busy highway and I would have to drive someone to run. And in the winter, I tend to be a bit of a bear and hibernate. So now that I've given my millions of excuses, there is NO excuse as to why the treadmill has not been used in ages.

  4. Keep up the good work!! How do you keep yourself motivated to go out and run...and what part of the day do you exercise??

That skirt is so cute...and you look adorable in it...I would love to buy a few items from Skirt Sports...I just wish the prices were able to fit into our "Stay At Home Mamma" budget:(

  5. I love SkirtSports styles! A great alternative to gym shorts and you can actually go run errands after your workout and not feel like you just came from the gym!
