Spiffies: a natural teething remedy for babies & toddlers

Spiffies: a natural teething remedy for babies & toddlers 1What's your solution for teething discomfort for your baby? I tend to breastfeed the pain away (and it works quite well).

I also try to avoid all those numbing agents in the baby care aisle. Because they scare me. It just doesn't seem sensible to put chemicals right into a baby's mouth.

Recently, I learned about a natural way to soothe a baby's sore gums (and prevent cavities at the same time!). Spiffies toothwipes are a research-backed product, created by a Tucson-based Pediatrician. The secret ingredient? Xylitol (a natural sweetener found in many fruits and plants - click on the link to read all about it).

The Spiffies Teething Kit is still in marketing development, but should be available for purchase at select retailers and on the Spiffies website by the end of the year. The kit will include an assortment of toothwipes, plus a mini booklet about teething. Just stick the wipes in the freezer and then gently rub baby's sore gums, as necessary. As of right now, there are 3 flavors - grape, apple, and mango. Both of our girls (19 months and 4 years) enjoy using the wipes on a nightly basis (our 19mo has a whole mouthful of teeth coming in).

Spiffies: a natural teething remedy for babies & toddlers 2

Spiffies is looking for 20 moms of teething babies/toddlers (4 months to age 3) to provide feedback about the packaging and messaging on the teething kit box (which is not yet available for purchase).

Interested? Leave a comment on this post by Friday, October 22nd, at 11:59pm. I'll select 20 names at random. All 20 moms will receive a free teething kit, plus 100 refills. After you've had a chance to try it, I'll ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire about your experience. Then, I'll have Spiffies send you a $20 gift card to buybuyBaby. Easy as pie.

How do you soothe your teething baby's sore gums?

  1. Sounds like a neat idea - my littlest lady is 20 months and in the process of cutting some very painful teeth right now. It's exciting to see her grow, but SO hard to watch her with an "owie" mouth.

  2. I would love to try these out! My daughter is 6 months and has started teething (no teeth yet) and I am looking for more natural solutions to help ease her discomfort! I have an amber necklace and that seems to be helping but I know that once the teeth start popping through she will need something else to help with the pain. I hope I win! :) YAY!

  3. I love the design on the box! It looks so homemade and natural and one of the first things Im looking for is to avoid ways to chemically solve my baby's issues. I have been so afraid of "ingredients" in things i use since i learned about the legal term "natural". FYI...it is not literal. How amazing that there is a baby teething soother that is 100% natural and in no way harmful. I hope they are reviewed well and I see them soon

    XOXO

  4. I would love to try a natural remedy for teething discomfort! I would much rather use a natural product versus running to the Ora-jel or Tylenol! My 11 month old loves teething rings and once I hand it to him, he puts it in his mouth and he's on his way again!

  5. My baby girl's two top teeth are coming in and boy is she cranky! She chomps down on me and bites her own hand raw/red.... these seem perfect for her. I don't want to use the other remedies out there...

  6. Lucy only has her 2-yr molars left. She got her teeth super fast so I feel like she didn't know anything other than the pain of teething. It's probably why she's only just recently started sleeping through the night. I tried to nurse when she was teething but she was constantly biting me. I think that may have contributed to the reason our nursing relationship only last until her first bday. Ouch!

  7. My little guy only has one tooth and he's 10 months old. I'm not looking forward to the next few months! I'd love to try Spiffies to hopefully bring him some comfort!

  8. I've got a 20 month old, a 3yr old and one on the way. I've tried the Hylands Teething tablets, but can never tell how effective they are. I try to limit use of Tylenol, but also know that being in such constant pain isn't great for them either. I totally agree with nursing as a good soother. Thanks!

  9. Wow, this is so awesome! My 8 moth old just started teething, he has one tooth in the front on the bottom and his two front top teeth are coming in right now. He is such a grump because of it, on bad days he won't be out of my arms because it hurts him so much. This would be awesome to try out!

  10. Teething is terrible. I think it's one of life's greatest injustices that they LOSE their baby teeth! After all that hard work?!?! My second just got her bottom two in... pretty painlessly, actually, so hopefully she won't be as dramatic about it as her brother was.
    :)

  11. What a great opportunity! I have a 5 month old and we are expecting his first tooth to pop through any day now. This is perfect timing!!

  12. Oh, man!! We are in the throes of first-time teething here, and it's rough on little Sprout! I would love to be part of the trial team for the Spiffies wipes. Growing new teeth is SO HARD for little babies.

  13. I would love to volunteer! Seems like my 14-month-old is always gnawing on something. The only thing I've done is give her ice cubes to chew on (which she isn't always thrilled about) and I give her some homepathic pills which seem to help the most. I've tried rubbing her gums with oral gel, but it doesn't seem to do much good and right now she's more like to chew on my finger if I try to put it on her gums! I'd love to try something that was natural and worked!

  14. I am very interested. I, too, avoid things like orajel, etc. I did use the teething tabs in the past (with my now 6.5 year old) because I liked that they were homeopathic. Now, We us an amber necklace and I'll freeze washclothes for her to chew/suck on.

I'll have to check out Spiffies as Miss Calleigh still has tons of teeth to go.

  15. We never really did much except give teething rings and it seemed to work okay. However, I was breastfeeding and maybe that did help too? I have another little one and I'd love to give this a try when it comes his turn to teething.

  16. Pick me, pick me! Haha! I usually breastfeed the pain away, too. Lady is almost a year old and has 5 teeth so far (and a 6th that is holding on for dear life, it just refuses to break through). She doesn't do well with teething. Princess never had any issues, but Lady's teeth just give her grief all the time!

  17. I'd love to be a part of this - our baby just turned 4 months old and I'm not looking forward to teething time! When my oldest was teething, I'd put ice in one of those mesh fresh fruit/veggie holders for him to suck on. I also did a lot of nursing and when he was getting his molars we tried Hylands teething tablets (which worked well).

  18. These sound like a great product. We use herbal teething drops - they seem to help. My middle little sister almost died because she got the baby Orajel and ate half the tube - turns out that the main ingredient, Benzacain, actually inhibits the red blood cells from carrying oxygen. My sis was blue by the time we got her to the ER - it was SCARY, she was literally suffocating and we couldn't do anything to help her. They ended up pumping her stomach, putting her on oxygen and treating her with some sort of charcoal stuff (I was only 14 or 15 - I don't remember the specifics, but she reacted to the charcoal stuff and that was another crisis) She ended up spending the night at the hospital and then came home and seemed to be all right. Within a month she had contracted Bell's Palsy - which she did recover from aside from a bit of lingering paralysis. All that to say - I'm all for natural remedies!

  19. I have a six month old that is on tooth #2. I HATE teething and say that one of my first questions for God is "why???" I would love to try this idea. My 3yo's dentist swears by these and I keep forgetting them at the store. Fun!

  20. We tried orajel once, BIG mistake. My poor baby, you could tell his whole mouth went numb. We threw that stuff away immediately. As for kiddo #2, and well #1 is still awaiting six teeth too, we don't do anything besides freezing rags. I wish i could find a better solution...looking forward to these becoming available

  21. This sounds like a wonderful product. I too stay away from any type of numbing agents. Yuck! They scare me, and I don't like the idea of numbing my child's mouth, what if she chokes because she swallows some of the numbing gel. I can't wait to check it out when it becomes available. Thanks for the tip Stephanie!

  22. We've moved on to the Tooth Fairy stage! Both of my children's teeth are all in and now my son's baby teeth are starting to fall out....luckily the Tooth Fairy hasn't forgotten about any lost teeth yet. Best wishes on maneuvering through the teething stage! (the Tooth Fairy stage is much more fun :)

  23. I have an 8 month old who is working on his 8th tooth so it hasn't been fun! Not really sure anything helps but like you breastfeeding is the most comforting I think. Otherwise I try to make sure he has something to knaw on and have recently gotten the Hylands tablets but can't tell if they work?

  24. I would love to try these. Eleanor's at the drooling on everything, gnawing on everything stage. No teeth yet, but she's obviously having discomfort, and I'd love to try these. (Oh, and I think the breastfeeding makes it worse sometimes...she'll start to nurse, and then pull away crying. I looked it up, read that sometimes sucking can exacerbate gum pressure. Maybe it's different once they actually have some teeth though?)

  25. I would like to try these! My almost 1-year old has only four teeth now, more to come soon I'm sure. They've come in in batches of two and she was very grumpy both times. Breastfeeding definitely helped, and I never used any of the usual over the counter stuff, I didn't think it would help much anyway.

  26. My boy is 9 months and has 4 teeth so far. I have used oragel a few times, but I prefer to try cold teethers like the toys you can buy to put in the fridge, or cold washcloths.

  27. I'd love to try these. I've never heard of them and I like that they are natural! My 16 month old is still working on her teeth! Also with a 3 month old, I'm bound to just get done teething with one, and start on the other! :)

  28. Hi Stephanie, I would LOVE to be considered to try these out - we are already well aware of the benefits of Xylitol, and have used products with this natural sweetener before. Having a 7 month old cut his first teeth on the bottom was NOT pleasant (lots of crying/screaming at night), and I would SOOOO love to try something else to help soothe him. He did NOT like to breastfeed while going through those two teeth coming up -it was terrible!!! So... to soothe him I usualy rub his gums with my finger, or use those teething tablets (not sure if that helped at ALL but figured why not try it). :)

Please let me know if you'd like me to help with trying out this product if you don't already have enough mommies! :) Thanks!!

  29. I would love to try these. I have never tried the numbing agents because they scare me, too. I usually just hold my baby and comfort her. When she was nursing, that worked great!

  30. I'd LOVE to volunteer for this...my 6 month old has been teethng like crazy it seems and it makes me soo sad to not know what to do. So far we've been giving him Humphrey's Teething Strips.

  31. I would love to try these! I cringe every time I give Thatcher (now 8 months) the numbing stuff, but sometimes I need something instant (like in the middle of the night, or while I'm out and about). These sound amazing! Thatcher just cut his first tooth this past weekend, and so we have many teeth to go! (YAY!) (not!)

  32. My 19 month old is also suffering right now through lots of teeth coming in at once. She just cries and cries. I hate the numbing products, too! I usually will wet at washcloth and put it in the fridge. She likes to suck on it, and it seems to help alleviate some of the pain. We also do a lot of cuddling. She isn't nursing anymore, but when her gums are bothering her, or if anything is bothering her for that matter, she just wants me to sit and hold her all day. I would love to try out the spiffies. It sounds like it would be a great product.

  33. My 21 month old has all her teeth and used to be really good at brushing them. She would brush her teeth all day long if I would let her. Then, suddenly, she hates brushing her teeth! I would love to give these a try to see if she likes them!

  34. Count me in, as well! Darah is 14 months old, and we rarely use the teething gel on her, as we find it only helps for a few minutes. And I seem to have cavity-prone teeth, so I'm already worried about cavity prevention for Darah, just in case she inherited my teeth!

  35. Count me in! My 3 year old is not the best at brushing his teeth and these wipes would sure be "spiffy." He got his first teeth at five months and I used Hyland teething tablets to ease the pain.

  36. My oldest didn't get teeth until 11 months, and then it was just one bottom tooth (which was hilarious! I was sort of sad when she started popping others because it was so stinking cute to see that one little tooth!) Then she got twelve teeth in a two week period. She wasn't super fussy, but we mostly dealt with it by wrapping ice cubes in wash cloths and letting her gnaw on them. My 6 month old hasn't popped any teeth yet, but is drooling nonstop. I'd be willing to try the Spiffies wipes and see how they work, it seems like a good idea!

  37. I'd volunteer! My 3yo and almost 2yo both resist brushing... they does ok, but I'd love to try something that would help keep their teeth clean and reduce teething pain!

  38. I tend to be a breastfeed the pain away mom too. But I would LOVE to try these Spiffies!! They sound perfect. I have an 11 month old, a 3 year old and a 5 year old. Even if I don't get picked I am definitely going to try them once they come out. Sounds great.

  39. I have a 7.5 month who seems to be working on teeth. We have used the mesh feeder with ice in it with our older daughter. Other than that not much other than breastfeeding. Definitely have not used those numbing agents. I'm afraid of them.

  40. For our 11 month old we use frozen bananas or other fruits in one of those teether rings, in combination with the baby teething tablets.

I too am interested in trying out the Spiffies products - my girls are 11 months and 3 years (turning 4 in December).

    Thanks!

  41. Our 17 month old has experienced a lot of teething pain. She seems to notice it mostly at night. We tried teething tablets with little success and we tried the numbing gel with very short-lived relief. We have offered her cold teething rings and cold wash-cloths but she is not interested enough in them to put them in her mouth. We would love the opportunity to try these out!

  42. wow that sound like a great product!!! funny I have 2 little goose teething right now!!! I nurse the pain away of my youngest 4 1/2 months and my 21 months is given frozen bananas to ease her pain

  43. I nurse and use amber...lately though my little one has been attached to me. Makes it hard to get anything done! So another option would be great to try.

  44. I would like to volunteer, I have a three year old who hates to brush, she just likes the taste of the toothpaste. I offend worry about how clean her teeth really are.

  45. Would love to volunteer! My just turned one year is working on her 9th and 10th tooth right now and I feel so bad for her pain.
