Sunscreen is for Summer, Right?

When the weather turns cool and brisk, it's easy to relegate our sunscreen bottles to the back of an unseen bathroom cupboard to wait for summer. After all, it just seems weird to apply sunscreen when the mornings are dark, the sky is overcast, and the sun seems to be taking a sabbatical. But sunscreen in still important during the fall and winter months.

According to a 2006 press release by Ohio State University Medical Center, "only 2 percent of Americans wear sunscreen in the winter," despite the fact that many dermotoligists and researchers recommend wearing a moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher every day of the year on any exposed skin.

Sunscreen is for Summer, Right? 1If you don't like the ooey, gooey nature of many creams and lotions on the market, you might be interested in hearing about Desert Essence's SPF 30 Sunscreen Towelettes. Essentially, these little "towelettes" are like baby wipes with sunscreen in them. You pull one out of the container, wipe your face/skin, and - ta da! - you're done. The towelettes feels refreshing on the skin - a bit like an astringent might feel (tingly and tight) and are not oily or creamy. The towelettes are not devoid of the typical "sunscreen smell," but it's not overpowering either. The biggest benefit of these little wipes is the ease of application - no tell-tale white circles or streaks to smooth in. The downside is the price - a container with 25 individual towelettes costs $12.99 (that works out to about 52 cents a wipe!). I guess convenience does come at a price...

You can find Desert Essence Sunscreen Towelettes at a variety of health food stores.

  1. I generally don't wear sunscreen in the winter - I do have a lotion with spf 15 for my face, but we live in the Northern Plains and don't go out much in winter time!

  2. I could really use this product especially since I have very fair skin and need to use sunscreen so I don't burn. This is a great giveaway and I really hope I win. Thanks.

  3. i try to wear it no matter what the season, but sometimes forget. i like the coppertone sport continuous spray because you dont feel all greasy and gross and you dont have to reapply it as much

  4. No, I don't wear sunscreen in the winter time. I live in the Pacific NW and it's never sunny here in winter. Honestly I don't have a favorite brand; I generally use whatever I see in the store.

  5. I wear a foundation with sunscreen, but I need to remember to wear sunscreen on the exposed areas where I don't wear foundation, such as my neck. I have tried Desert Essence cleanser before and loved it and would love to try out the sunscreen.

  6. We use sunscreen mostly in summer...I admit it!! Although I use it on my face year round in my moisturizer. Now I feel like a bad mom. We use Johnsons or Banana Boat spray SPF 50 (don't have a favorite..its what I have a coupon for) because its hard to slow down a toddler or rub lotion on every part of a 5 month old.......this product sounds like something I could incorporate into our getting the kids ready routinue w/o too much hassle tho. Thanks!

  7. This is such a brilliant idea because if one happened to be in a place where they were caught out in the sun without having put sunscreen on, a towelette from the purse would be the answer!

As for my wearing sunscreen in fall/winter, my daytime facial lotion and foundation both have sunscreen in them so I'm protected year round.

  8. I do wear sunscreen year round because I have fair skin. My favorite brand is Neutrogena because it feels light on the skin.

  9. I am stationed in Hawaii, so I have no choice but to wear sunscreen all of the time. My favorite brand is Clinique. They have this tinted sunscreen for your face. I love it!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  10. I don't wear it in the winter or fall... I should. I usually buy the store brand sunscreen because its cheapest

  11. I use sunscreen year round as I am quite fair and my father has already had skin cancer. I usually opt for the store/generic brand of baby sunblock because the store brand is cheaper and the baby sunblock in gentle enough for my sensitive skin. Thanks for the giveaway!

  12. never wear in the winter... I'm never outside long enough in the winter to do any damage, beside living in Michigan, we don't see the sun for 4 months, pretty much starting in a couple weeks

  13. I don't wear sunscreen during Winter, until now, I didn't realize I should. My favorite brand is a Neutrogena for old broads, like myself!

  14. No, I have been lax in the winter. And must have missed my hands somewhat in the summer as the age spots are showing. Try to buy face moisturizer with sunblock. Never too much for being brand specific.

  15. I don't put on actual sunscreen from a bottle during the winter/fall, but there is SPF in my make up. I love Neutrogena because it feels silky, not sticky.

  16. These are so neat!

NO...i dont use it in the fall and winter but i dont know why!!!! My aveeno face lotion and makeup has spf in it though...so i guess I DO wear it on my face!

  17. I usually use Banana Boat! I would love to try this new product. I wear sunscreen or my mineral makeup year round to prevent sun exposure! Thanks!

  18. I'd LOVE to try these!

I wear sunscreen year round. During the summer if I'm going to be out I make sure to put on a high SPF, but at all other times I'm wearing SPF 15. My lotions all have it, and I wear lotion every day!

  19. I actually wear makeup that has a sunscreen in it (SPF 15). I probably need to wear sunscreen on the other exposed areas since I live in Sunny CA! I recently reviewed the sunscreen soap and I like that too!

  20. In summer I wear any sunscreen that I happen to pick up - don't have a favorite. In winter I rely on the sunscreen that is in my make up.

  21. I do use sunscreen everyday, it is very important. I use coppertone oil free. I would really like to try this product, sounds great!

  22. Excellent product that my children's teacher can use for when they go to play at recess.

  23. I don't wear it because it's terrible under make-up. I also don't usually plan on being out in the sun for any length of time. Unlike summer when we go to the pool or lake.

  24. In the Fall and Winter I do not use "bottled" sunscreen but I do buy facial moisturizer that contains sunscreen. I usually buy Oil of Olay moisturizer with SPF 15 for sensitive skin.

  25. I have to be honest and say I never thought of wearing sunscreen in the winter. We use Banana Boat though in the summer months. This would be a great way to apply sunscreen and I would even begin using in the winter. Thank you!

  26. I took my wonderful but light skin grandson to the park Tuesday and we had to leave because I didn't think to bring and sunscreen. Thank you for this wonderful contest and prize!

  27. I really don't use sunscreen in the winter. Yes in the fall. though. I don't really have a favorite brand; I just buy what's on sale. Thank you!

  28. I use Neutrogena Intensive wrinkle everyday. and my makeup also has an SPF if I wear it too.

Bethseda soap has a SPF in it of 10 if anyone is interested I am not connected to them, but hey it is an easy way to get some protection!

  29. I use Aveeno SPF 50 lotion. It sinks in quickly and is fragrance free. Perfect for summer, spring, fall and winter!

  30. I wear facial moisterizer with sunscreen in the winter. I buy whatever kind of sunscreen that is on sale for the rest of the year.

  31. I have started wearing it all year just in the last 5 years. I didn't really think about it before. I really like Neutrogena, I think it's called daily defense. It's not greasy at all.

  32. I'm super sensitive to the sun, so I use sunscreen year round. My favorite is Neutrogena because they make a cream with an SPF of 85 & a spray with an SPF of 70... perfect for me. Towelettes would be ideal for the folks in my family who think it's too much trouble to apply!

  33. I could use this on the slopes. I usually get burned when I go snowboarding. These would be handy to take with me.

  34. I used Bullfrog this summer. The rest of the year I just use makeup with sunscreen and/or moisturizer with sunscreen.

  35. Love to have for hubby, he has had numerous skin cancers removed from face and arms, he would truly enjoy these, year around

  36. What a great idea, though. My family has a history of skin cancer, so I'm the sunscreen police at my house. We'd definitely use this!

  37. Whoa, you're right. It's expensive. I definitely wouldn't use this as our main source of sunscreen due to cost, but keeping it in the car or purse for unexpected outdoor excursions would be great. I also hate that slimy feeling of sunscreen, especially on my face, so this might be a splurge sometimes too. In answer to your question, I wear sunscreen when I know I'll be outdoors for an extended period of time, but not on a regular basis. I don't like to buy several different kinds so I usually wear a Coppertone Kids or something, but I also enjoy Coppertone oil-free for my face.

  38. We're definitely not winter sunscreen apply-ers, but then...when temperatures are below freezing, we're usually not sporting hardly an inch of bare skin anyways! ;) These look super handy - especially for squirmy kiddos.

  39. I'm bad, I don't remember ever applying sunscreen in the winter. For the summer time my favorite is Bull Frog spray on sunscreen with bug repellent.

  40. Hi, What a neat way to apply sunscreen! Our family wears it throughout every season. For sports games, outdoor activities and even outside in the snow. The suns' rays are reflected off of the snow. Right now, we use "Banana Boat Continuous Clear Spray SPF 50!
The spray reaches hard to get places and doesn't sweat off. It can blow off in a large breeze. Please enter me in your drawing. We would love to try this product. Many thanks.....Cindi
