Surprising Way to Save Money #2: Exercise

Exercise is important for a hundred reasons.

It makes you look good. It makes you feel good. It makes you strong. It makes you confident.

And it saves you money.

The healthier you are, the better it is for your pocketbook. If your muscles are engaged, your body is toned, and you have a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index), you are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, liver disease, infertility, and joint problems. Thus, you are likely to bypass the high bills associated with hospital stays, doctor visits, prescriptions, and surgeries.

I try to remind myself of these things every day when I want to say, "I'm too tired to exercise" or "I don't feel like exercising" or "I only had five hours of sleep last night." There is always a reason not to exercise - and sometimes the reasons can seem quite logical.

before-my-run-sept-2009BUT I can't let myself go down that road so I operate under a "no excuses" mentality. Unless the sky is literally falling (and I don't mean that it's raining), I follow a fitness plan. Right now, I'm training for a 5K. It's not the toughest or the longest workout in the world, but it's something.

I don't skimp on workout gear either. I buy the best sports bras, tennis shoes, and running clothes because I know that those expenses are minimal compared to the huge price tag of poor health.

Today, in honor of healthy living, I'm giving away a $100 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods. Maybe you need a new pair of tennies. Or hiking boots. Or a tennis racket. Or a running skirt.

I think I'd want to buy:

  1. Good for you -- running a 5k. I'm currently babying my knee from overuse, but my goal would be to do the same. I'd use this card to get some new running shoes. I think I have too many miles on my current ones!

  2. I follow them on twitter. :-)
I have been holding out getting my kettlebells with hopes that I'll get either a gift card or a really nice coupon first. Those things are expensive! Right now, it doesn't matter much. I'm recovering from knee surgery...

  3. Oh, I could so use this! I recently started the Couch to 5K program and I am hooked! However, my shoes are the pits, not even made for running. I would love to win this, so that I can purchase some appropriate running shoes.

Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed!

  4. I'm still trying to work off all the pregnancy weight. I've been meaning to get a pair of jogging sneakers and quit making excuses!

  5. I have to admit I've been slacking off. I don't eat that healthy, so I need to exercise even more. I just have to find the time!

  6. One of my New Years Resolutions is to run a 5k - needless to say, I haven't gotten there yet! Would love a new pair of running shoes!

  7. I could really use some good shoes to walk in! I started exercising and did great and lost 30 pounds and for the last 3 months I just pretty much stopped and am steadily gaining back! I've got to get back in gear and I would love to be able to buy some stuff to get me started back again!

  8. There are so many things we could shop for at Dicks. Hubby is a hunter and deer season is coming up so we have stuff for that. Both kids need new tennis shoes. I could use some decent workout clothes...to hopefully motivate me....

  9. I would purchase the ASICS Boy's GEL 1140 (White/Black) Running Shoes for my son who desperately needs new ones and with the remainder of the GC I'd also purchase the Columbia Sawyer River Jacket Boys for my son. Wow, who new $100 could purchase such great QUALITY items! Thanks so much for the chance to enter.

  10. Good for you for training for a 5k! I'm trying to gear up for a "couch to 5k" plan myself, so new gear would be a great motivator!

  11. Being a fan of the pub sport of darts, I'd use the winnings to buy a new dart board to improve my hand and eye coordination while drinking alcohol.

That, or I'll buy some free weights and a chin up bar to give myself a workout.

  12. I would really like to buy a new hoodie as someone stole mine, plas pants would be nice. I have to workout EVERY day before I do anything else. Don't like it but I do it. The garage gets cold in winter and I wear my jammies so I could really use this!

  13. Both of my kids are in year-round sports. This gc would help offset my out of pocket expenses on the millions of things they need every season!

  14. We are planning a camping trip for next summer. I would use the gift card toward some of the camping gear that we still need. Thank you.

  15. I plan on trying to exercise more once it cools down outside. We will be walking 5 nights a week.It is just too hot and humid in fl right now to be outside. Thanks!

  16. It may not be good for me to win this. Going to Dicks takes me like a whole day! Nice job working out though. You would think it would make you more tired, but it's just the opposite!

  17. My husband's father has just started a fitness plan for the first time in many years and we would give him this as a form of encouragement. Thank you!

  18. I would buy a new pair of sneakers! Mine got wet, my mother-in-law put them in her dryer, they shrunk....so yeah, I need a new pair of shoes! :)

  19. One item I would like to get is a Leatherman Surge Multi-Tool. It's something that would come in handy not only when we're camping, but also around the house. And my husband would be just a little bit envious in a good sort of way... :)

  20. I too think that being healthy saves money. Its terrible to say, but it can make you money too. Research has shown that many employers won't hire those overweight, feeling they may not be up to the work days. And it might be true, I need to lose weight and I find I'm much more tired. Running after a little toddler helps the tired thing though!

Only, I'm dyspraxic and have trouble with a lot of things so I want one of those reclining bikes I've seen on my stroller walks on bike trails. The term, "Its just like riding a bike." Doesn't apply to me. I learned to read at around two but things like tying my shoelaces and riding a bike I learned well after others. And trying to take up riding later didn't work so well. So I think I'd buy some riding gear or put the money towards a reclining bike if they have one. Or those grown up trikes.

  21. It's FOOTBALL season and our Kansas State Wildcats are working on a comeback with Coach Snyder. We need some new Cats gear from Dick's!!!

  22. My husband and I could use some new shoes. I'd buy myself the Nike Women's Air Miller+ Walk (White/Silver/Black) and my husband the Nike Men's Air Team Trust II (White/Silver).

  23. I have been following Dick’s Sporting Goods on Twitter for a while
    camper223

Thank you so very very much

    camper223[at]live[dot]com

  24. My kids have been asking for 2 things running spikes and a tread mill. My daughters favorite store is Dicks which is over 20 miles away but she always wants to go and look around to see what they have new and of coarse try on running shoes. When ever we go it takes forever to leave as husband and son always end up going to the Foosball table on display and start playing and of coarse the competition so maybe if I won the prize I should just buy the Foosball table.

Thank you so very very much

    camper223[at]live[dot]com

  25. I'd love to get the Head NanoPower 600 Badminton Racquet from Dick's to use for my fall intramural badminton league - it would definitely give me an edge in my matches and help me stay in shape when the weather turns and outdoor activities become less of an option. Thanks!

  26. My day feels off when I don't do my usual morning exercise routine it really rejuvinates me.

:) Thank you for the wonderful giveaway! :)

  27. I would buy a new pair of sneakers, mine are really worn out, but I have been putting off buying things. I saw a cool black Nike's on sale for $59.99 at Dick's, so if I win the gift card, I will buy them and have money left for some workout shorts too.

  28. I would buy the Puma Gradiant Track Jacket Set Infant Boys. You can never have too many kids clothes! Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com

  29. I really need a new pair of running shoes, I try to run 3-5 miles a day and my shoes are proving that I'm not slacking off! Thanks for the chance!

  30. I agree thoroughly with you. Regular exercise is important to your health and weight. I try to do some form of cardio workout 5 times a week and strength training 2 times a week. The proper clothing and good shoes are an important part of exercise.

  31. Being a fan of the pub sport of darts, I'd use the winnings to buy a new dart board to improve my hand and eye coordination while drinking alcohol.

That, or bumbbells and a door frame chinup bar to give myself a workout.

  32. I am starting a new work out program and really need some clothing for this. I would love to win this as workout clothing sure is expensive.

  33. i would give this to my wife, she recently lost 45lbs to better her health and get a breast reduction i think she deserves some new outfits.

  34. Oh ugh. I just hate exercizing. Seriously. If only I could achieve that "runner's high" stage then maybe I'd enjoy it more but I can never seem to get there! I must be doing something wrong. Oh yeah...I need to run to get that, don't I? All kidding aside, it is important and it only gets harder the older we (I!) get. Time for me to get back on it before Christmas is here and I totally indulge in all of that fab food!

  35. We love Dicks Sporting Goods...my husband could definitely use some new golf clubs! I think new gear is a great workout motivator!

  36. My kids could really use some new sports equipment. My daughter needs soccer cleats and a soccer ball and my son could use some new street hockey equipment.

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  37. My husband and I have started working out finally, we try to go for daily walks or exercise on equipment in our basement. My goal is to lose 50 lbs! I would definitely get some new running shoes with this, mine are from Walmart and are slowly falling apart!

  38. I am on a mission to start working out better... Once it cools off! LOL! Living in AZ, you know how hot it still is (although maybe you're a bit cooler down there than we are up here in Phx?). I need a new pair of running shoes, and a new sports bra! Maybe a better pair of hiking shoes too... =)

  39. This would be such a fantastic gift to my very sports minded son--he is very much into golf and fishing and recently taken up hunting--he would be like a kid in a candy store!

  40. I've been slacking on the exercise lately. I had surgery on my foot three months ago & I'm having a hard time getting back into exercising. Yeah, I know, excuses, excuses.....

  41. I would totally get some under armour gear. I'm really pleased with their apparel, especially for running outside. I would like to try their shoes next!

  42. I need some new running/aerobic shoes, so I'd definitely snatch up the Nike Women's Air Max Tailwind pair. Thanks!

    musesofmegret (at) gmail (dot) com

  43. Being a lover of the pub sport of darts, I'd buy a new dart board, so as to improve my hand and eye coordination while drinking alcohol.

Hope I hit the Bulls Eye!

  44. I would buy a Baggo: Official Bag Toss Game for my family all to enjoy! We have seen people in the park playing this and it looks so fun!

  45. I could really use a new pair of walking shoes. I walk 5 miles 4 days a week, and my shoes are two years old. No cushion left!

  46. I am having a baby in November and this would really help me get in shape after the birth. I have gained alot of weight and I will really need to hit the gym hard to get back into my size 6 jeans.

  47. I'd love to get a frisbee golf set for the kids (and me). We played frisbee golf on vacation and it was lots of fun, and we have a large field behind the house that would be perfect for setting up a course.

  48. I would buy the Adidas Copa Sling Pack (my son wants a sling backpack, and I haven't been able to find one that is well-made yet), and the Wenzel Ponderosa Sport Dome Tent for our camping/hiking trips.

  49. I end up going to Dicks a lot for our sons, my husband, and myself! It's a great place to get athletic shoes--and gifts for brothers-in-law that are hard to buy for!

  50. I need some new hiking boots, and also some bike supplies. I just did a 30+ mile bike ride recently, and if I'm going to do that again I need to upgrade some things!

  51. following @stiffilicious

I've had a renewed interest in camping recently and would love to grab some new gear for fall camping! $100 could go a long way.

  52. I love playing tennis but my tennis racquet is really old and I would love to get a new one. Thanks. Following Dicks on Twitter.

  53. I got my yoga mat and blocks at dicks! Now we need warm clothes for going to Buffalo Bills games. I got really good winter boots and gloves from dicks that are fantastic. My feet and hands are never cold or wet. We have tried the cheap stuff before and it just doesnt keep us warm! Now i need some good snow pants and and thermals!

  54. I just started working out again after i had my daughter, she is 20 months, and I need a nice pair of gym shoes and a few work out outfits. How awesome would that be to win this! fingers crossed.

  55. I would buy a new sports bra and a workout top to go with my yoga pants. I love to do yoga at home, and I'm just starting to try out pilates.

  56. I would buy some new training sneakers as well as some new workout clothes to inspire me to jumpstart my fitness regimen again. Dick's is my favorite sporting goods store!

  57. Camping supplies - we have a family camp-out next month that we're looking forward to and I get the feeling that at the very least I'll need earplugs (it's a girl troop w/ mostly younger girls - I kid, I kid! :-) and some form of sleeping mats. We'll know more as the time approaches, though.

  58. This is one I desperately need to work on. If I won the gift card it would mostly get spent on something for hunting and camping (a couple of our favorite activities) but a part of it would also get spent on getting me a new seat for my bike so that I can ride comfortably again!

  59. I think you are so cute with your money saving reasons for exercising. I am going to start thinking that way too. I cant even start to narrow down what I would buy @ Dicks, Jon needs new shoes so bad, but I'm gonna need a new sports bra for the post baby boobs. =)

  60. I didn't feel much like exercising today until my brother gave me a pep talk. It's nice to have a supportive family. :)

  61. I buy all my son's carthartt clothing from Dick's. I think they have the most reasonable prices and they have excellent customer service.

  62. I love Dick's Sporting Goods. I think giving yourself a physical fitness goal other than weight loss such as a 5K to train for is a great way to motivate yourself to go to the gym!

  63. I love Dicks Sporting Goods. We have a new one buy us that just opened 5 min. away. I have 5 boys all in sports and have already been in that store a dozen times...I would love to win a Gift Card!

  64. i would buy some really good running shoes. mine are pretty beat up and i can't afford to buy new ones since i lost my job

  65. I'm training for a 5K now too - our family does a 'fun run' together in december for the holiday. Even 3 miles can kick your tush when you're totally out of shape! Yikes!! :)

FYI- I actually really like the champion sports bras sold at target. They're very supportive and snug for me, and they're not expensive. But, I have small to medium sized boobs. So to anyone reading, I think body shape does determine what level of workout gear you should buy to get maximum comfort while exercising.

  66. How's the 5K training going? I'm on Week 3 and so far so good. The workouts aren't easy but they also aren't so hard that I get discouraged.

I think if I won I'd buy some new running shorts and tees. I'm in desparate need! I have some nice stuff but very little of it so I tend to wear the same thing over and over.

  67. I try to exercise with my son from the baseball pitches in the yard to the frisbee golf. He keeps me active and I enjoy every minute of it.

  68. I'd get the Under Armour Sports Bra for me and the Under Armour UPDATED Style Heat Gear T-Shirt for Aaron, he's training for a 5K too :)

  69. I would definitely grab some North Face clothing with a $100 gift card to Dick's. When it rains, I feel like I am the only one without a waterproof fall jacket...it sucks being wet all the time.

  70. Hubby and I are walking the dogs more and more, and the shoes I have aren't cutting it. So, I'd probably get new shoes for walking if I won.

  71. I would love to buy a Nike+ Sport Band. I am very into the numbers when working out. I love to know how fast I am going, how fast I went, how many calories I have burned, how long I have been going... These are things I love about a treadmill and even more on the Wii Fit. I know exercise is not necessarily all about the numbers, but sometimes they can help motivate us. As a swimmer in my younger days, it was all about the time! BTW - I would want the pink one!

  72. I could really use this. I am a stay-at-home mom of a beautiful baby boy. I love my job, but having dropped to one income and having added expenses of the baby, it is difficult for me to spend money on myself lately. A new pair of running shoes, or a cute new jogging outfit, could go a long way toward making me feel better about myself... and helping me lose that last 10 pounds of baby weight!

  73. I could use a nice pair of sneakers. I also need some nice exercise clothes. I've found a couple of lands end shirts that wick the moisture away but I'd love a couple more and some nice capris or pants for exercising. I'm walking my first half marathon this coming year so I'll be training quite a bit. Thanks!

  74. If I won a gc to Dick's I would buy myself some new running shoes and some new running socks that wick the moisture from my feet. I think that I must be washing my current ones wrong or they have absorbed too much fabric softner or somethign b/c they are no longer wicking like they should and my running shoes should be replaced.

  75. Oh, the sports bra dilemma that is my life. I have a sensitivity to nickel, frequently found in clasps of bras. I also have a sensitivity to my own sweat on the sensitive skin near my boobs. All of this means I spend a lot of money on sports bras and I really need a new one!!

  76. I am training for my first organized run ever! I am 30 and am training for an 8k to be held in November. I REALLY could used some new shoes, as well as some cooler weather running clothes!

  77. I follow Dicks - bsw529.
I really need to get some good athletic shoes. I joined a gym and use the treadmill as my "reward" for getting through all the machines, but I've noticed I have pains in my feet that I never had before. Maybe that's why you aren't supposed to have holes in the bottom of your shoes.

  78. I love that store, I would buy hunting stuff for dove and quail season, arrows for a bow, camping stuff, and maybe a pair of shorts.

  79. I really could use some nice new tennis shoes. Not sure yet if I would want running shoes or walking shoes as I do some of both.

  80. Boy do I need new exercise gear. My tees, clean as they are, have stains in the underarm area. I'd run to Dick's and purchase pretty, durable replacements. Here's my hit list:

    $20.00 - Nike Women's Power House Tee
$19.99 - Under Armour Heat Gear Tech Tee Womens
$14.97 - Nike Women's Cheetah Print Short Sleeve Tee

I'd purchase 2 of each in different colors.

Thanks for the chance. I'm crossing my fingers on this one.

  81. It's finally starting to get a little bit cooler (read: its staying under 100 degrees!) here in Texas. We recently bought one of those bike trailers so that we can go on family bike rides with our 8 month old riding in the trailer. However, my bike was stolen and I have not been able to replace it. I would use the giftcard to purchase a new bike so that we can go on our family rides when it gets a little bit cooler. Thanks for the offer!

  82. I love to walk, and it's funny how the soles wear down according to the shape of the road--slanted road equals slanted wear.

  83. I don't run but I love to walk and I would buy a pair of their New Balance 576 Walking Shoes; they look so comfortable! Thank you!

  84. I am a nurse, and all I do is walk, walk, walk. I would buy some new New Balance walking shoes, and some gold toe socks.

  85. So true! It, in the long run, saves you so much money to be healthy, and that includes both exercising and eating well. I'm very good about eating well, but not so good about exercising...it's something I really want to work on, and maybe 100 dollars would get me the gear I need to force myself to do it ;)

  86. We as a family love Dick's and buy all of our athletic and sporting goods there. I love finding everything we need at Dick's at a great price!

    thinkingbrain135 at gmail dot com

  87. I love to go for walks almost every day. I need a way to exercise when it's rainy or too cold. I would use the gift certificate towards the Stamina SpaceMate Folding Stepper.

    mscoffee77(AT)juno(DOT)cm

  88. You're completely adorable in your little running outfit. I thought about getting one of those skorts. I might have to now that I see a grown woman can wear them and still look adorable and age appropriate!

    Nell

  89. great prize, I would buy the reebok easy tone at dicks. have been wanting them for a while. keeping my fingers crossed :0)

  90. I love to walk and with the weather starting to cool a little morning walks are so enjoyable. I could really use some new work out clothes. I am throwing around the idea of doing a 5k.

  91. I'm trying to keep walking through my first pregnancy, I hear that the more you excercise the easier your labor is and the quicker you bounce back after birth. I'd buy a stretchier pair of workout pants, as my belly grows mine are becoming tighter and tighter...

  92. I have just found a love for running within the last 6 months. We got a membership to the YMCA and LOVE it. I am training for a 5k run and using the http://www.c25k.com program. It is a great program that uses intervals to get you up to 5k in 9 weeks! I would love to get some new workout clothes since the ones I have are starting to get too loose from the weight that I am losing. Exercise is WONDERFUL!!

  93. First if all, let us know when you do the 5K and how it goes.
With 5 people in our house, we always could use stuff from Dick's. I would have to say one of the best items we buy are nice running shoes.

  94. There is always somebody in the family who needs shoes, so that would probably be the purchase that would come first. After that, would depend on how much was left on the card!

  95. I had foot surgery and want to get back into walking and fitness, so I would love to get a brand new pair of Cross-Training sneakers.

  96. I need a new pair of tennis shoes. I want to pay a little more for the next pair in hopes that they may last a little longer!!

  97. Hm, I tried leaving a comment and something went wrong.

I'd love to try out a running skirt. I've been looking for that perfect pair of hiking shoes for quite a while now. I'm rather picky when it comes to what protects my feet while hiking. I've been making-do with my 8-year-old running shoes from high school...that makes it sound like I'm NOT picky, but I really am!

  98. I would buy the Nike Women's Shox Experience+ 2 (White/Silver/Red) they are $99. I exercise a lot and my sneakers are no good, worn out and cheap. These shoes would be perfect!

  99. I love walking, running, hiking, pretty much anything outdoors. Last year I walked miles and miles with my little guy strapped to me in a sling. I loved it. This year he is running alongside me, and I really need a new pair of running shoes to keep up with him! I bought my last pair very early in my pregnancy--almost two and a half years ago--and they have seen far too many miles. Here's to health and good living!

  100. I walk everywhere, all the time and my sneakers show it. I've had them for almost 2 years at this point. I know, crazy. But it's hard to do it when so many other things are in need to.

  101. "Wow!" What a fantastic prize giveaway. Dick's Sporting Goods is one of my favorite places to buy my waking gear! I love to walk and make sure that I change my shoes quite often, and I am in need of a new sports bra and cushioned socks to help absorb the shock of walking from my knees. Many thanks, Cindi

  102. I have been in such a rut and need a good pair of walking shoes - with extra support for the weight I've recently gained. (long sigh)
    tvollowitz at aol dot com

  103. I don't have a strict exercise routine, but I do try to stay active and in shape. Mostly I garden and run around with my little fella. Being a single mom makes it hard to find large chunks of time for exercise. Some days the to do list is just too long. But I still try to do things like squats while I'm in the shower or drying my hair and stomach crunches when I'm on the floor playing.
If I won the gift certificate, I'd probably give it to a friend of mine who LOVES to exercise.

  104. I'm impressed with your no nonsense attitude about exercise. I'm the girl with all of the excuses. . .

Maybe a new pair of shoes and a sports bra would give me some motivation. You think?

  105. I agree with you that the healthier you are, the better it is for your pocketbook. If only more people felt this way and got and exercised, I think the healthcare costs in this country would go way down.

  106. You are much more disciplined the me :) I have an eliptical that I need to use more often, I do much better going somewhere to exercise!

  107. I've been wanting to do some bicycling to get back in shape. My bike was stolen from a bike rack a while back and I've been wanting to get a new one.

  108. man i wish we had a Dick's close by. i enjoy their store although pricey i find.
if i were to shop there (without a conscience) i would buy a new kids sleeping bag (the North Face blue ridge) and the texsport jumbo folding cot.
i also perused the clearance sections and checked out the camera cases but didn't see anything that caught my eye.
good point too about exercise saving me money. i had never really thought about it that way.

  109. again, you're such an inspiration to work out - i've been trying to at least walk more...but i'm such a lazy girl!

    autumn398 @ yahoo.com

  110. Oh my, i would definitely buy a new pair of running shoes, i don't own a single pair! but then...if i think about my husband, he needs a new pair of boots, hiking boots, so i'd probably buy that for him, to make sure i don't just think about myself, he deserves something nice and new too :)

~It's great to hear/read that you like exercising! i love exercising, it's so good for you in so many ways, you look great by the way =)

    Thanks for the chance!

  111. After I have my baby next month, I'm going to start training for a half marathon in June. I need to get new running shoes first though! I can't wait until the weather cools down more in Arizona so I can enjoy exercising outdoors again.

  112. I guess I never thought about the importance of quality when buying a sports bra until today. While trying to shed postnatal weight, I have noticed that the inexpensive sports bra that I purchased is just not cutting it. I would definitely buy a better sports bra and possibly a new pair of shoes. Comfort where possible would sure make exercising more enjoyable.

  113. Now that my daughter is two I've realized how much she learns by watching me. I want her to know how important exercise is, so I need to lead by example. When we moved to a new town at the beginning of the year, I considered joining a gym. But I decided instead to find ways to work out that include her, so she can see that it's a part of my life. Instead we go on long walks, short jogs, bike rides, as well as doing yoga and just playing in the backyard.

  114. Exercising can also save you money by lifting the brain-fog that induces us to make stupid money choices. Ask any internet shopaholic if you don't know what I mean. ;-)

Incidentally, I've won so many giveaways in the last year or so that I think my UPS man thinks I'm an out-of-control spendthrift. I'm actually very thrifty--OK, cheap as Scrooge--so I really, really want to explain myself every time he knocks on the door.

  115. I would buy a new moving comfort sports bra... because they are amazing for those of us who weren't blessed with small chests ;-)...
I would also buy a running skirt, because they are just adorable and I haven't splurged on one yet.

  116. I just bought some new exercise stuff -- I figured some new tennis shoes would eliminate at least one excuse for not exercising (my old shoes really hurt my feet). So I'd probably buy some gear for someone else. I can think of a couple people who could use some new sunglasses.

  117. I seriously need a new pair of running shoes. Mine are, if I remember correctly, somewhere around six years old. Ridiculous. I need good equipment if I'm going to do this right.

  118. Exercise does save a lot of money in the long run, but I can't convince myself to exercise just for the sake of it, so I ride my bike or walk whenever I can, park in the boonies, and do other small things in daily life that lead to exercising without thinking about it.

  119. I could really use a new pair of athletic shoes. I walk every day and I tend to wear out shoes quickly.
I agree if you get some exercise you will feel better and look better, not to mention the health benefits,
