The Shred is Over. The 5K Awaits.

tennis-shoes-mizunoThe Shred is over.

The weather is (hopefully) going to start cooling off soon.

It's time to lace up my tennis shoes and start running consistently again.

The best way for me to stay motivated is to sign up for a 5K. There is a race in my area on September 12th, but I think that might be too soon. I'll keep you posted.

My plan is to follow this six-week 5K plan, starting soon (maybe this week, maybe next week).

Anyone want to join me?

  1. I'm doing couch to 5k on coolrunning.com and it's turned me into a runner. so much of it is mental. you CAN run. you CAN. good luck. my first 5k is Oct 3

  2. Each year I wanted to get myself out there to do this. Kristen is going to do x-country and track this school year so I think that is great motivation to do this. Thanks for including the six week schedule - I think that will help a lot!!

  3. I am doing the Couch to 5k program. I am in Week 3. I download the podcasts, so that I don't have to time myself. It makes it really easy. The music isn't bad either.

    My first 5K is mid-October.

Look forward to reading more about your progress.

  4. I'd love to join you! Though, it'll be several weeks until is cool enough to run in the evenings here. I've gone out a couple times, bearing the heat, and I felt I could have put in a lot more if it weren't 100+! Love the suggestions for exercise gadgets. I could definitely use something fun and inspiring! ...5k? hmmm... first I'll see if I can make it all the way around the block without walking :) Let us know how it goes for you!

  5. I wish that I was a runner like you - every single step I take while running I hate hate hate!! I have a friend who told me that he was going to run 8-10 miles the other day then just happened to run 18 -- crazy crazy!!! If I run 10 steps I want to crawl into a ball =) What is your secret to liking (loving) it?

  6. I'll do it with you! I like this better than the Couch-to-5k plan because it goes quicker. I don't know if I'll sign up for a 5K but I'll definitely try to stick to this plan.

Are you starting on Monday or are you modifying the plan to start earlier?

  7. I've been training since end of June and just ran a 5k! My next one is Sept 19th. My group trained by jogging 20 minutes as far as you could- no set distance with a 45 second sprint at the end (walking only when necessary). Week 2 we upped it to 23 min. Week 3 was 25 minutes. Then we started going certain distances (started at 2.5 miles) running regular pace for 3 minutes and increased pace for one until the run was complete. We then started doing the 5k distance, and then did it on hills (our 5k had several hills to conquer). Now that our first 5k is over, we increased our distance to 4.5 miles. I say all this to say that the plan in your link seems a little easy for you (you seem in pretty good shape to me! :). I am a beginner myself and after about 4 weeks of running the above pattern, I could run the entire distance including the hills without all the walking. I'm just encouraging you to push yourself and you WILL be ready by Sept 12th!

  8. Ohh good for you! I don't run but my goal this month is 15 in home walking miles in addition to my other workouts. One day I'll walk a 5k outdoors that is for sure.
