Themed Weekend: Breastfeeding

themed-weekend-breastfeedingThere are so many things to talk about when it comes to breastfeeding...

We could get down to business and talk about how much it hurts, but also how worth it is to continue because there are so many benefits of breastfeeding.

Or we might discuss more "embarrassing" topics: what to do about engorgement, how to know if your milk has come in, or how to soothe sore nipples

Or we could talk about how breastfeeding can work as birth control (sometimes).

Or you could pull up a chair with a cup of coffee and a blueberry scone - and I could tell you about what it was like to nurse a toddler or how bittersweet it was to wean. While we're having a heart-to-heart, I might as well share my favorite places to nurse a baby in public

Undoubtedly, breastfeeding is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. I've read about it, researched it, been to breastfeeding groups, and interviewed lactation consultants. And, of course, I nursed my oldest daughter until she was almost two and I am nursing a newborn now.

To me, breastfeeding is a private thing - an intimate thing - a special gift that I choose to give to my babies for their optimal health and development. It has taught me a lot about love and about sacrifice and about what it means to be a mother.

I hope you'll join the conversation this weekend. There will be tips and product reviews and giveaways galore. Thanks in advance for participating!

  1. Good topic! Breastfeeding has really taken the modesty out of me -- I used to be shy to even tell anyone I was nursing. I'm not sure why, I guess because I had never been around it. My sisters and I were formula fed, and my family in general is just really private about things like that.

I have overcome my shyness now though and have become quite the advocate. I never thought I'd breastfeed, and I certainly didn't think I'd consider any form of extended breastfeeding. I'm so glad I didn't let my fears prevent me from sharing this wonderful gift with my daughter. She is 7 months now and I look forward to nursing her for as many more months as she'll allow.

  2. Breastfeeding is the one thing I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did end up enjoying it. I breastfed my little one until she was about 15 months old - it was bittersweet when it ended.

In a few months I'll be breastfeeding my new baby - I'm looking forward to this themed weekend.

  3. Great topic. I really enjoy breastfeeding my children. Even though I struggle with it in the first week because my milk comes in on day 6 instead of the 3rd or 4th day like other women.

  4. I loved breastfeeding my children and although I am done, I will try to *pipe in* with my experience breastfeeding.
