Themed Weekend: Entrepreneur

Themed Weekend: Entrepreneur 1"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." - Thomas Edison

Tommy Edison was a smart man. In case you need a refresher from high school history, he invented the phonographic, the motion stop camera, and the light bulb. Three inventions that changed the world.

His perspective on life is truly motivating. He believed in creating the impossible. He believed in hard work. He believed in making life better for mankind. As do I.

Themed Weekend: Entrepreneur 2I believe in dreaming and doing, in waking up early and staying up late, in giving my all today to make tomorrow better. Entrepreneurship suits me well because I like to have the freedom to be creative, to make my own hours, and to dream my technicolored dreams. Best of all, I get to do all of those things in the company of the people that I love most...my family.

YOUR TURN: Are you an entrepreneur (or do you dream of becoming one)? If so, what kind of business do you own? Are you a freelancer, a consultant, a blogger, an Etsy Shop owner...?

  1. I never would have thought of myself as an entrepreneur but I do find myself constantly inventing ways to do things more naturally and with less money. In fact I have something I'm working on that I plan on giving you to see what you think :)

  2. I guess I am an entrepreneur. I work from home/with my kids in tow as a floral designer. I don't take/get very many jobs. But, I love it. I love that I am not the big breadwinner for the family, so having my own business isn't very stressful. It's exciting.

  3. I am not an entrepreneur yet, but I have a few businesses I would LOVE to start. Right now I have a wonderful job that allows me to work from home and set my own schedule. I do have to go and visit Wish Kids and attend meetings, but I work around my husband's schedule to make sure that our kids don't have to go to daycare.

  4. I've been an independent consultant for several different companies but it never really was my thing until Scentsy! I finally found a company I feel good about and love love love their candles. They provide a lot of the tools I need to sell with and that makes it easier to be successful. The best thing to do is to do what you love!

  5. That's a great quote. I'm definitely the entrepreneur type. I've mostly worked for myself for the past 10 years with a few stints working for others. I especially love working from home. But, truth be told, I'm excited about not having to work from home once I'm married. I'm kind of ready for a break (I think). I'll still keep up the blog, of course. And, really, I'll probably focus more energy on it, but it's so much fun that it doesn't seem like work.
Can't wait to see what you come up with this weekend!

  6. Nope. But my husband has started building furniture from our garage to make an extra buck or two. Times are hard... and he makes BEAUTIFUL pieces. Hopefully people will agree and pay well for his artistry.

  7. Before my son was born, I had my own law firm. It was just me, and there was SO much to do. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the "behind the scenes" business stuff in addition to the legal work. Right now I'm looking in to some freelance writing and/or editing work. If you have any tips or ideas on how to get started, I'd love to hear them!

  8. Yep, I'm an entrepreneur! I enjoy working for myself and need to dedicate some more time and effort to making my business really grow. I am looking forward to this theme!

  9. hmmm, I don't think I would have called myself an entrepreneur although since my son was born I have tried a number of different things to make some extra money for our family. Unfortunately I think most of them have either ended up a wash or cost more than we made. :( So I don't suppose I would consider myself an entrepreneur...
I do like photography and would love to take more pictures of people and nature, but I have a hard time charging for my work. :) I have an etsy shop with some of my note cards at http://creativechaosimages.com
I sold Discovery Toys for awhile and now am trying to make a go of Creative Memories scrapbooking supplies. At least this one meshes well with my personal hobby of scrapbooking!

  10. I enjoy collecting handmade folkart, antiques,etc.
Owning my own Crafts Shop with items made by artisans and Fair Trade has been a goal of mine.
    Thanks, Cindi

  11. I am NOT an entrepreneur! I definitely have the personality and the drive, and I sure could use the cash, but I have so much going on that I cannot conceive of a way to continue with my obligations to my family and start a little business, too. I wish I could. There are a ton of things I could do, but homeschooling is so time-consuming, and I wouldn't want to put my kids on the back burner too often.

  12. I'd love to start an Etsy shop or something because I love to create, but a little voice inside keeps telling me, "The world doesn't need another X."

  13. Sure am! Love working from home although it's not a cake walk that's for sure. I am an affiliate/Internet marketer, blogger and VA (Virtual Assistant) although my VA work is limited and I don't usually promote it.

Looking forward to more on this subject!

  14. When I started teaching fresh out of college, I thought for sure I had found my calling - it fit me perfectly. After I got married and decided to stay home to raise my family, I figured I would just always miss that part of my life - doing a "job" that I love. I sort of fell into my business, so when I became a momtrepreneur, I shocked myself! I would never 'go back to work' in the sense of teaching again because I couldn't bear to live my little ones for the short time they are little, but I sure do love running my business on the side. I'm passionate about the cause and love the challenge, but also love that I can turn it all off for a while to do a puzzle with my 3 yr old.

  15. I am self employed as an Interior designer - so interpret that as you will. But I feel I identify more as a write and blogger than anything else. I just wish it paid a tad bit more...

  16. I like to dream big...I always have. Sometimes I'm a little fearful of stepping out to achieve those dreams, especially when I've gotten a little burned. I decided, though, that I'd rather regret stepping out and failing than not taking that step at all.

    Looking forward to these post!

  17. I own a catering business... never thought I would do this in my wildest dreams but I love it. I wake up everyday to the challenge of offering good food and of wanting to teach my clients and staff about the importance of good, local ingredients.

It is the greatest fit for me and I am so grateful for a husband that dreams big and supports me 100%.

I'm so proud of you, Steph, for pursuing your dreams. There is truly no feeling more satisfying than knowing that you are doing what you are meant to do.

  18. yay for blogging! I don't like choosing between little money or working for "the man" but, for now that seems to be what I've traded. It's a good trade and one that I hope will give me the best of both worlds, financial AND personal freedom. Working for one's self is truly a liberating experience. It tells you exactly how much your worth (weep), but it's also constantly in flux which means you could be worth millions of pennies depending on fortune and hard work.

My twin sister is in the Coast Guard. She has financial freedom but no personal freedom. She tells me I should find steady work. To which I say, "are you wearing pajamas now?" LOL!

  19. No, but I'm married to one. My husband has taught me much about taking chances and believing in myself. One quote I have stolen from him is, "Asking isn't stealing." Great reminder to "go for it" in life and not be afraid of being told no.

  20. I sure am. Have been since 2004, but I was born/raised one. I always knew I'd be my own boss.

I'm starting a new business, with the heart of it being a blog. But I've already done all the planning/prepping to create three monthly membership sites around it, three ebooks and entwine affiliate marketing into my income funnel.

I always look at a project and plan it for where I'd like to see it 5-10 years down the road. I don't run a business as a day-to-day business, because I find that you'll likely be farther behind in your success if you do it that way.

    Looking forward to this theme.

    Your friend,
    Nell Taliercio

  21. I am a blogger and Etsy shop owner, but dream of taking it to another level. Finding time to create, while being a full time mother, wife, and running my husband's Ebay business is really difficult. I like your attitude of getting up early and staying up late. You know I love your blog Stephanie. I am slowly working through your book too. GREAT tips there! :) ~Lanie

  22. Funny thing, I am. But I would not consider myself the type. I'm more the type to go into work, do what I'm told, and then come home and veg. But here I am, with a blog that makes a few pennies and a blog design business that helps our family pay our bills (and allows me to shop without asking permission, lol) and I love it! I wish I were more of an innovator. I'm not one to dream big dreams, but I love how something I do for the fun can be both my job and my hobby.

My daughter is entranced with the picture of your older daughter on the sidebar. She wants to know why she looks like that with her bottom lip jutted out. She says she wants her mommy. :-)
