Themed Weekend: Money Matters

wad of cash moneyI have heard that in most marriages one person is usually the "saver" and one person is usually the "spender."

That is not the case in our marriage.

Actually, we sometimes joke that my husband is the "saver" and I am the "super saver." We are both extremely "aware" of what we spend, how we spend it, and why we do what we do.

Most people would actually be very surprised if they found out exactly how much money we make because we are able to live quite well on just a little.

Stay tuned this weekend for tips, ideas, product reviews, and giveaways - all related to wise money management. I look forward to engaging in these conversations with you. I hope you'll join in!

  1. I'm not exactly sure how you would classify us.

I'm best described like this: stick it in the savings account right now so that I can't spend it because if we don't I will spend it - and I won't spend it on big stuff, I'll just nickle and dime the budget to death.

Hubby is best described as: save until something big comes along that you want, then buy that, and then buy the next big thing that comes along, and...

It seems like I'm the spender and he's the saver, but really we're both spenders we just spend differently. We had a pretty severe financial crisis a couple of years ago that just about cost us our marriage. Since then I'm a whole lot more of a saver than I ever was before - but I'm still not to where I want to be on that issue.

  2. Somewhere I heard that money issues are one of the top reasons cited for divorce. How great that you and your hubby are on the same page about that.
As for me, I am definitely a saver. I live on very little money, but I live very comfortably. It takes some effort, but it's well worth it. To me saving money equals more time that I get to spend with my little one.

  3. fun fun!
we too surprise people with how little we make in a year but somehow manage to do it with three kids and one income.

  4. Unfortunately, it is the case is our marriage. It is mostly my fault, though. Actually, I am a member of Debtor's Anonymous and it and my determination not to lose my family means that we are happily married for 23 years. Many thanks, Cindi

  5. Ohhh...I am so excited for all the info you post. Hubby & I are much better with our money, but when we first started sharing money it was a different story. We were both so used to getting what we wanted as soon as we wanted that it didn't matter we just went out and bought whatever. Not a good way to start things off. But thankfully we have matured in the money area and are doing much better. I guess I would say I am more of the spender then he is, but we are trying to pinch and save and not spend on just anything like we used to.

  6. I'd say Adam is a lot more frugal than myself, but we both are savers. If that makes sense? He is more uptight about it and I'm a little more laid back about it. Luckily, money has never been an issue in our marriage.

  7. Hi Stephanie,

I came upon your blog for the first time today and have been here for so long :) I like your blog. Its both informative and interesting. I would like to let you know that I have added your blog to my blog roll.

    Cheers

  8. I started couponing earlier this year. It is so fun to see what items I can get for free/cheap. I I can't wait to hear some of your money matter ideas.

  9. We are rather "thrifty" too. My husband is a huge fan of Dave Ramsey, and our household motto is "You will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else". I have no doubt that is true.
