Today is the last day of my four-part series on common breastfeeding concerns.
I encourage you to log on to the Lansinoh website to:
1. Sign up for Nurture Notes ("a free weekly e-message...").
2. Get answers to frequently asked questions.
3. Enter to win a free manual breast pump or double electric breast pump.
To conclude the series, I asked Gina Ciagne, Director of Breastfeeding Relations and Outreach at Lansinoh Laboratories Inc., to share her top breastfeeding tips. Here's what she said...
GINA'S TOP TIP: I have two tips. My top tip for moms is to trust your body and be realistic about what breastfeeding a baby will be like especially in the beginning. Breastfeeding is natural but it does not always come naturally and that is a hard thing for some moms to cope with. Every baby is different and every breastfeeding relationship is different. The early weeks may be tiring and tough but the time will pass quickly so try to take it a day at a time. In today’s fast-paced world, it is hard to slow down and relax but take the time to sit or lie down with your baby and concentrate on establishing your breastfeeding supply and relationship and - again - trust that your body will do all that it needs to do to nourish your baby. That confidence and commitment that you can breastfeed your baby and the knowledge that you can persevere can be helpful when you are pulling an all nighter and seemingly nursing non-stop. Hang in there those first few days or weeks—it does get better.
My other tip which is equally important: don’t wait until a situation gets dire before asking for help. There are lactation consultants, counselors, and other breastfeeding moms all around the US who are available to help and there is no problem too small or large for them to handle. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. So many situations can be remedied quickly and can help you continue to breastfeed successfully. Resources for finding breastfeeding help can be found by on the Breastfeeding Resources page on Lansinoh's website.
I also asked Gina...
What resources (books, websites, magazines, etc.) do you recommend that address the topic of breastfeeding?
Websites:
www.Kellymom.com
www.LaLecheleague.org
www.ILCA.org
www.Lansinoh.com
www.4woman.gov
Books:
Breastfeeding Answer Book (La Leche League)
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (La Leche League)
Nursing Mother’s Companion (Kathleen Huggins)
Nursing Mother, Working Mother (Gale Pryor)
My top tip? Hang in there! Breastfeeding will not only get better, it will become a precious and treasured time between you and your baby. Right now, it's uncomfortable, perhaps agonizing. In a few short weeks, it will likely be pure bliss.
