Travel With Kids: Cincinnati

Isn't it nice when something exceeds your expectations? That's how Cincinnati was for us.

We pulled into the Winton Woods Campground and were immediately impressed. The well-manicured campground is part of the larger Winton Woods county park, which includes wide biking/walking trails, several playgrounds, a lake for fishing & boating, AND a splash park for little ones (only $2/child). This was among the top 5 campgrounds we have stayed at during our trek across the USA.

A highlight of our trip was our dinner cruise onboard BB RiverBoats. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. We enjoyed a buffet indoors and then wandered around the three decks. To be more accurate, we chased our two littles girls (ages 2 & 4) up and down the steps. Guess what their favorite part of the night was? The dance floor and DJ, of course!

We also stopped in at Jungle Jim's International Market. Featured on the Travel Channel, this "foodie paradise" is HUGE. The superstore has food from all over the world, plus an extensive wine and beer collection. There's also plenty for kids to look at - a huge soup can that talks, a scene from Robin Hood, and more. Definitely worth a visit. Anyone want to guess why we took a photo near an outhouse door?

Finally, we walked through the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. The facility features a look at creationism versus evolution...and also walks guests through the Bible. It would be best-suited for elementary-age students and older.

All in all? We will always have fond memories of our time in Cincy. It's a city I hope to visit again in the future.

Have you ever been to Cincinnati? What did you like/not like about it?

* Special thanks to Cincinnati USA for providing a campground spot and passes to area attractions.

  2. You didn't do my two favorite things to do in Cinci. The Newport aquarium and the zoo. The zoo is my favorite onr in the country.

    1. That must be quite a zoo! We haven't actually visited many zoos on our trek across the USA. I think we prefer parks, libraries, beaches, and museums. :)

  3. This looks like a fabulous time! Are you hanging in there with the crazy heat? I know you are used to it being from Tucson and all, however there's something completely different about the heat when you are in an RV! I have never been anywhere in the middle section of the US...I have visited most of the eastern seaboard and everything west of Colorado...must get exploring!

    1. We actually have two AC's in the RV so we are staying cool...as long as we stay inside. ;)

The worst part of the weather on this side of the country is the humidity. I MUCH prefer a dry heat.

    1. The wet playground WAS fun - perfectly designed for toddlers & preschoolers! The slide was a particular hit.

Overall, the Hamilton County Park District was very impressive. Others counties should use their park system as a shining example of what to do right.

  4. We went to Jungle Jims on our last trip to Cincinnati. We loved looking at all the decor, but decided it wasn't that much fun to visit unless you actually had something to shop for!

    1. True. Jungle Jim's is definitely a grocery store, not necessarily a tourist attraction. That said...WHAT a grocery store! We did a bit of shopping there and we were impressed by the selection, the prices, and the quality.

If you ever get a chance, try the cinnamon raisin rugelach. Superb.

Also - I wish Jungle Jim's had a giant playground on-site. Wouldn't that be fun?
