What to Pack: TravelKiddy

What to Pack: TravelKiddy 1Long trips can be hard for little ones.

There is so much waiting (for the plane to take-off/land, for the stoplight to turn to green, for the car to get filled up with gas, etc.)...and so much sitting still.

If you are under three feet tall, waiting and sitting still are two things that are not on your list of favorite things to do.

As a parent, I think it is wise to extend a lot of grace to small children when traveling...and to be very, VERY prepared with food, activities, and break stops.

One idea is to purchase a TravelKiddy for your trip. Invented by a mom of four, the activity kits are packed with fun toys, crafts, and games to keep kids entertained.

What to Pack: TravelKiddy 2We took the BASIC TravelKiddy for ages 3-6 on a recent road trip and our 3-year-old kept asking for the "green bag." You can refer to the website for the kit's entire contents, but her favorite things inside included the stickers, the measuring tape, the toy animals, and the hand sanitizer wipes (go figure...who knew germ-killing could be so much fun?).

I think the kits would be best-suited for air travel since some of the contents work better with a tray or flat surface, but it was great in the car too.

Available in four different age categories (toddler, ages 3-6, ages 6-9, and ages 8-adult), the kits retail for between $21.95-$44.95.

  1. What a great idea..there is nothing worse than traveling with a bored child..They would stay pretty busy with this :)

  2. We might go to San Diego in the summer...and I'm in Maryland. The TravelKiddy would be fabulous to keep my little one occupied for the cross-country trip!

  3. These are a great idea-grab & go. All the kits have such a nice variety of items, they would definitely keep the kids interested. I love that they are kid powered, not electronic.

  4. It is a 12 hour car ride to visit the in-laws. This would be a huge help for me when I make this trip alone with 3 kids.

  5. My 4-year-old sister would love this! (and my parents too) She's the only child at home now, so entertaining her can be challenging.

  6. With a 2 and a 5 year old the most important thing to pack is activities and healthy snacks!! Even though we have a DVD player in the car, we try not to rely on it or they are like little Zombies when we stop.

  7. WOW! This would be perfect! :) We are going on our first family vacation. My older sons (3 and 6) are so excited for their first plane ride and this would be a fantastic way to keep them entertained. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for the chance :)

  8. One big bag..tons of crafts = happy kids. This is a great idea. Most of my days are spent thinking of how to keep my kids occupied and having fun. This would take care of it!
    Thanks!

  9. I was one of those people that thought "why can't they calm that child" (before I had kids). Maybe everyone who has never had kids thinks that. Now I know, it can be hard sometimes.

  10. This would be a great birhtday present for my daughter for the long trips that we sometimes have to take. With my husband deployed overseas i need anything to keep her busy during those long trips!

  11. Finding new activities for the kids to try is a great way to distract them during travel. I bet this kit would also come in handy if you had to take them to someplace like the Dr. office if you had to wait in the waiting room for a while too.

  12. It is a nice alternative to video games while traveling. It would actually encourage creativity. However, I also appreciate that the makers decided to add hand sanitizing wipes, tissues and bandages.

  13. I would love to win this for my little boy! it would be perfect for car trips, doctor appointments(long wait in waiting room), restaurants, or at home.

  14. We haven't been on any flights with our toddler yet, but would definitely pack all sorts of things to pass the time. I wonder if there are any items in there the TSA would have a problem with ;)

  15. We have a timeshare that we go to about four times a year that is a five hour drive away. I am always trying to find fun new things to entertain my DS when we are both in the car and once we are there. We pack up a backpack of toys that he can take with him and I always try to include something new so he is excited by it. What a wonderful new addition this would be.

  16. THIS IS PERFECT! We fly to disney every year (sometimes twice a year) and the plane ride can get a little crazy. I pack things for them to do, but this would be perfect! It would be a little bag they could be in "charge" of. And all those cool things in there! It is so much better then the little things I make up. lol

  17. We took our kids (5 ages 7 and under!) on a 20 hour trip this past Thanksgiving and one of the REALLY would have come in handy! Since we're planning on the same trip this Thanksgiving, I'D LOVE TO HAVE ONE OF THESE!!! Thanks for the chance to win one.

  18. Our family often takes long trips to visit various family members. My husband likes to get in the car and get there with as few stops as possible. This is fine for me...but not so fun for our 3 year old. This sounds like a great idea to have a kit of things specially put together to keep her occupied and happy on our long trips.

  19. We like to take trips throughout the year. Mostly camping so, the Travel Kit would come in handy for my 2 girls. This can keep them busy in the car & when we are relaxing at the campground. :)

  20. What a great assortment in those kits. I've got kids in all those age ranges. I like the lacing cards, that would keep them busy.

  21. This would be nice to have. My almost 3yo has begun to not want to be in her carseat for any long period. It's becoming a challenge to keep her occupied. It's cool that they have something for the older set too.

  22. My kids do not particularly like to travel but we play DVDs and also each child is allowed to pack their own goody bag, with colored pencils, notebooks, small toys, snacks, etc. My teenager has an Ipod so of course that's all she needs ;0)

  23. My three year old loves to travel, but with this kit he would love it even more. It's a wonderful idea and an innovative product!

  24. neat idea. we usually make our own little travel bag- we travel a fair deal. the idea about including a measuring tape is cool- it would help math skills and be very enetertaining too!

  25. This kit is genius. pure genius. I actually didn't even bring anything in the car the last time we took a road trip.... with my four kids, no less... this would be a lifesaver!

  26. I really do love this idea. My daughter uses that term all parents dislike very much: "Are we there yet?" We do not have a DVD player in our vehicle and were very lucky to have borrowed a friends when we went on a plane ride this last summer. My daughter just got a DS for Xmas, so that keeps her busy on longer car rides, but that too gets old and she gets fidgety. I like these travel kits a lot. Such a good idea for any kid! Thanks for this giveaway.

  27. I've used various activity books and small, handheld games for plane rides and road trips, but it's nice to see someone package something like this together. Makes for an easier purchase. I would be interested in trying this on my friend's very precocious toddler.

  28. We have traveled to and from South Africa with our now 3 year old two times. That's generally about 24 hours of traveling each way when you add in customs and airport commutes. Our tips for plane rides?
1 year old - Make sure to give them a bottle at take off and landing...the swallowing will prevent popping ears.
2 years old - I have never seen a kid drink and pee so much in my life. On a 16 hour flight we went through at least as many diapers. Don't forget flashcards and a personal DVD player...the flashcards are good for when they are demanding attention and the DVD player is the ultimate back-up plan.

Doing the trip again at the end of May...sure would be nice to have a Travelkiddie along for the ride...talk about the ultimate test drive! ;)

  29. We could use this right now. We're on vacation in Kissimmee, FL and still have the long trip home. This has so many different things for our children to do and keep them occupied.

  30. This would be so welcome and helpful for our family's trip to Disney this fall. We haven't decided if we're driving or flying yet -- but this would be fun for either!

  31. My son has been invited to go on a trip that is a four hour plane ride, this would be a great tool to help us get through that!

  32. Fabulous site! I love the idea of their products! I would love to win this for my son. Such useful items!!!

  33. For road trips, I pack a tote bag full of a few new books, or small toys that I've stashed away specifically for that purpose. The tote is next to my son in the car so he can grab and exchange items throughout the long car ride.

TravelKiddy seems like the way to go for a flight when you want entertainment without a lot of extra packing weight and bulk for a carry on. I remember playing with lacing toys as a kid, and I love them!

  34. Looks like the bag contains a huge array of items. It's always nice to have several new activities to pull out throughout the trip. Nothing's worse than listening to someone ask "are we there yet" for the 50th time!

  35. The travel bags look like they would be fun for kids. I like the variety of activities inside it. It would keep my daughter busy for awhile.

  36. I like how everything fits neatly in and the child can have their own little bag. This would be very nice for my son.

  37. Thi si sa great idea! I used to run around shopping and gather up odds and ends to make things similar to this. This is one easy item, already packed! Oh yeah, already packed, that sounds good!

  38. Yes these would be great to travel with, even my 2 oldest enjoy doing activities with the 2 smaller ones, it must bring out the kid in them.

  39. Wow these are great. We tend to travel a lot with our soon to be two year old and would love one of these!
    Thanks!

  40. TravelKiddy is convenient and has everything for little ones, such a nice idea, I like it.

  41. I'm heading on an airplane next month with my 3-year-old, I need this! I had plans to just pack a whole bunch of random stuff to keep her occupied, but I love how the TravelKiddy does that for you! It's great that they have multiple age options so that the kits can grow with your children.

  42. We make a 4 hour drive to my parent's house frequently and this would be perfect for the older 2 kiddos! I always have grand ideas of putting something like this together on my own but after 7 years of having children I still really haven't :)

  43. We recently took a road trip back to Colorado and i put together my own kit of sorts for the trip. This is nice because it's all in one place. What a great idea!

  44. My kids love to bring activity books on all of our vacations. The Travel Kiddy looks like a nice way to have everything come together and stay organized.

  45. My daughter would totally love this. When we go on trips, she usually gets so bored that she ends up sleeping the whole way.

  46. So whenever we travel, I create my own version of this- but it would be so much easier and more compact to get these for the girls. The ones I made for my girls were bulky and we had to gather them up multiple times from their bags falling on the floor of the car.

  47. I like the sport bag their items come in! I use various sizes of ziplocs for snacks, games, etc.
    Many thanks, Cindi

  48. This would be perfect for our upcoming drive to Phoenix. I'm beginning to realize it will be more difficult with an 18 month old then it was last year with a 5 month old.

  49. ooo - this would be perfect for my my toddler's trip across the pong in a few months. He hates planes and I am dreading the flight. This looks amazing though!

  50. I really could have used the TravelKiddy when I went on vacation this past summer with my son (2) and his cousin (4). I searched high and low for activities that would keep them busy on an all day car ride, besides a portable DVD player. I would love to win the one geared for 3-6 yr olds.

  51. These are awesome- we brought clothes donations when we adopted our daughter and these types of bags helped us bring more clothes to donate!

  52. I have seen things like this advertised before and what a great idea. I am planning a car trip back to KC in April and it will just by Mikayla and I. I think I will have to get her one of these for the ride. I normally put together a bag of fun things to do in the car but since this would be new stuff she would love it.

  53. I love that they come with a first aid/clean-up kit-genius! Also, not to be a downer, but I think they would be great if you need to take your child to a funeral. We recently had a funeral for my hubby's grandmother and as family we were there ALL day. That gets really long for the kiddos. Thanks for the chance to win! Tracy

  54. We're planning a road trip in May and this sounds like it would come in handy! My son hates long car trips so maybe something like this would make it a little easier on all of us :)

  55. another sanity-saving idea! Love it! We do long car rides, so having this to pull out for my twins would be helpful. :)

  56. This is such a great idea!! We have several road trips planned for this summer so this would be great to have for our little one. She'll be 3 in June and (as you know!) needs to have lots of options to stay busy! :)

  57. What a fun idea. We have a road trip coming up to visit family this spring. My husband may not be able to get away from work, so it could just be me and two little kids in the car. This kit would be a lifesaver!

  58. Really? This is right up my 5 year-old's alley... 10 hour flying day ahead of us... This series of posts have been awesome.

I'm buying this on February 2nd... You know, if I don't win it :-)

  59. My husband has relatives in Canada, and the car rides there (between 5 & 8 hours, depending on where we go) are so hard on our 5 year old and 7 year old. We try anything to avoid the 'are we there yet?' whines and I think this would be a great thing for the kids!

  60. We have lots of trips planned this year - both driving and flying and I am going to take a serious look into this idea. I feel like I spend so much time and money preparing for the trip and need all the help I can get!

  61. I am always searching for plane activity kits - although to be honest, on a really long flight the seatback entertainment system usually wins. Can you imagine watching Lilo and Stitch 4 times back to back?!

  62. Ha, meant to say that we are going on a 12 hour trip this summer, brother in law's air force graduation!! And I am already dreading the looong time in the car with the kids!! My little boy would love having something like this along.

  63. This is a really clever idea for keeping all of the stuff together in one area. I think coming up for the ideas of what to put in a pack could be excruciatingly difficult.

  64. That is great how they come for different age groups. I have found as the kids get older that it is harder for them to sit still. How does that happen?

  65. This is a really neat idea, to put all these things together. We do a lot of traveling on short 3 to 4 hour trips, and this would be perfect for my 3 year old. I like the fact that it has so much stuff. He can be finicky and get bored quickly. There is so much variety in this pack that it would take him a while to get bored.

  66. Calvin likes to have a coloring book for the five minute ride from Target, so this would be great. He is at the stage of liking mazes so that would be fun.

  67. my mom was always so good about making her own of these when we traveled (which we did... A LOT). I hope to be as creative as her someday.
Are you planning any trips soon? You should come to the east coast... I hear it's beautiful in the spring :)

  68. That's a great idea! I sometimes collect various coloring books, stickers, etc and put them together for my kids. I was keeping a small tote bag in the car full of stuff. I've really slacked off on that though. This kit is perfect!! And I love the different age groups.

  69. I really like the design of this, especially the colors and the quality of the contents. We have an upcoming trip to Florida and I've been stashing away things to entertain my toddler on the plane. This would be the perfect thing to take with us.

  70. I've always packed as many entertaining goodies into individual little backpacks while travel with my daughters. This pack already filled and age appropriate is an excellent idea! Thanks for offering!

  71. That looks like a great pack - I put our own pack together for the trip to California over Christmas but I like the idea of being able to buy a pre-made pack. We've got another trip in June coming up - it will be shorter than driving to California was, but still will be several hours so I'll be checking these out before then!

  72. I always have lots of snacks, toys and activities for my girls. Also lots of book to read over and over! Also never under estimate the power of a lollipop. they don't get candy often but trips they do!

  73. I love those wiki-stiks in the pack. My kids were given some of them at a restaurant once and they didn't want to put them down to eat! (And if you know my kids, that really says something)

  74. I think my son is going on a 6 hour train ride with his grandparents this summer... I'm sure they would love a little something to help keep him occupied! ;)

  75. My daughter would love this! I always try to bring one new thing for our travels but this bag of fabulous treats would certainly keep my little one entertained. We are going away in March and so I would love to win one!

  76. What a great idea, and all put together in a nice, slim, tidy package. They really aren't too badly priced, either, when you think of all the time and effort you'd have to put in to gather all that up yourself. I'm not sure that there could ever be enough stickers, though. My girls love stickers. Give 'em a pile of them, and they're occupied for hours. The lacing cards are another great idea--you could make up games for those!

  77. Traveling with 3 children aged 3-9, I have found that stopping often and food are great ways to make the trip go smoothly. Those kits seem really cool too. Might be a great way to distract them for a little while.
