Wordless Wednesday: day 2 of the shred

shred-1 shred-2

For those of you who don't know, I started Jillian Michaels' 30-Day Shred yesterday (It's on-sale for $6.99 at amazon.com right now if you want to order it and join me in this crazy adventure...).

GOALS:

  • Complete all 30 days (Last Day: August 5).
  • Lose 15 pounds.
  • Tone up.
  • Increase cardiovascular strength.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKOUT IN 1 WORD: OW!

QUESTIONS FOR OTHER SHRED USERS:

  1. Do you use 3, 5, or 10 pound weights? I use 5 (but I think I need 3). Ha!
  2. Do you do "regular" push-ups or "girl-style" push-ups? I do girl-style push-ups (as evidenced in embarrassing photo above...please disregard my bad form).
  3. What "day" are you on and does it get easier? Please say "yes."

  1. Hi,

Wanted to let you know that your friend and my friend Celia told me about your blog and I love it! You inspired me to get the 30 Day Shred video and I am on day 2. It will be interesting to see how it works. I will continue to check in and see how your progress is going. Good luck!

  2. Sorry, but I didnt mean I am sad about being pregnant, I really wanted to get pregnanat, just wished that I had lost the weight right after Jordan instead of waiting until right before I got pregnant again. =)

  3. You can do it!!! Keep going! I know it hurts, I know all you want to do is skip it for the day, but dont. It will be worth it. I used 5 pound weights but like you I considered switching to 3 pounds but I felt glad that I never did when I finished. I did try it with a friends 3 pound weights though one day and it is way easier compared to the 5 pounds. On to the push ups, I started doing the girly ones just like you are but by the end I had switched to regular push ups, I dont remember exactly when I made the switch though, sorry. And thirdly, it definetaly gets easier! Keep going, I think the first week is the worst, then the first 2 or 3 days after you switch to the next level is also killer, but the end result is worth it. I wish I had pictures or something to show you results but sadly after the nice weight loss my body decided it was time to get pregnant, so I dont even have the results to share. But let me tell you, I am starting the video again as soon as I am cleared to excersize after the baby. So worth it!

  4. Wow! Good for you! I just ordered this video too! Ugh! I sure need something to kick me in the rear and get my act together. Just saw some pictures of me and I look pregnant...and I am not! Thanks for the inspiration. Now that you are a few more days in, how is it going!?

  5. So, I have not yet shredded. Well, I attempted day 1, made it 8 minutes into the 20 minute workout, and couldn't decide if I wanted to cry or just altogether die. To my credit, though, I was only 8 weeks post-partum at the time, so I will give it another go after a few weeks of toning exercies and cardio work.

  6. I just moved up to Level 2 and it is kicking my butt hard. My shoulders are killing me. (I use 3 lb weights.) I'm on day 17 but I waited until day 15 to move up because I was struggling with level 1 for so long. (It may be a 60 day shred for me LOL) Good luck!

  7. I love this workout! I use 3 pound weights because I am seriously out of shape after having my 4th baby! :) When I first looked at doing it, I was like, "Oh that looks easy. That can't be too hard." HA! Wow is it a workout or what?! But I feel so good afterward. I have to say that after day 4 it did get easier for me. I didn't feel nearly as sore as the first few days.

Keep up the good work! It will be worth it! :)

  8. 1. I use 3 lbs. It's plenty. :-)
    2. Girl style. I tried the other and I can't even do one. Sigh...
    3. I am not sure what day I'm on anymore. I set out to do it 5X a week and got to Level 2. Then I pulled an ab muscle doing the walk-out pushups. Made it so the whole video was kind of pointless b/c you use that muscle for so many of her moves. So I went out and did a brisk run/walk for 25 min a few times before I went on vacation. Since I've been back, I've done Level 1 twice. This morning I'm walking with the neighbors instead.

I would like to get back to Level 2 again and doing it 5x a week. I feel GREAT after I do it.

It has NOT helped me lose weight, but then my body seems to be "stuck" right now. I guess it can't hurt, right?

    Good luck to you!

  9. I'm in the middle of the shred and am doing a case study on my blog with a total review at the end. You can read about my experience every day so far on the blog. Tomorrow is Day 10 so it's my last day on level 1. YEA!!!

I switch between weight sizes, 4 lb and 2 or 3 lb (I think is the lightest one but they are old so I can't read the size).

Girl style push ups for me but I use Perfect Pushups which make it so much easier for me.

The workout has gotten easier for me as the days progress. I have a hard time with some of the moves due to knee issues but I modify those and feel great.

  10. Good for you! I would so love to try this dvd! I might have to convince hubby that I really need 7 dollars for an...um...emergency!

Good luck, I hope it goes well. Of course the fact that you've announced your intentions to stick w/the program might be good motivation! :)

I do girlie pushups, when I have to do pushups, because I avoid any kind of pushups whenever humanly possible!

  11. Yuck - push ups!

I bet you can meet your goal!

I don't know what it is about working out to a tape, but I just can't do it.

I'm a hiking, bike riding, roller blading, walking, swimming kind of gal. That way it doesn't feel like exercising.

  12. Today is day #4 for me! OUCH is right! I started with 8lb weights because that is all I had. Double ouch. I switched to 3 lbs yesterday and will do most exercises with 3 then 8 for some. It is totally do-able because it is only 20 minutes. Even if I want to chicken out and give up or cheat and take a day off I tell myslelf, you can do 20 minutes!! I took a peak at level two yesterday. I think I will wait until week 2 for that. Did one woman comment she does ALL THREE LEVELS in one go? YIKES! She also runs/walks every day and does yoga? She takes Sundays off. Well I should hope so! I am not that gung ho. I am hoping to make the 30 days and then do it about three times a week for maintainence. Good luck and keep us posted. PS I do girly push ups and feel no guilt, hey I am a girl!

  13. Stephanie, you are my inspiration. Way to go. Let me know if it works... 15 lbs in a month??? I think I would die, tho. I am such an exercise wimp.

  14. I'm glad you like it!
and yes, it gets easier. I used 5 and 8lb weights, depending on the exercise and usually started out with full pushups but then had to switch to the modified ones.

  15. I'm now 11 weeks postpartum and have been stuck at +10 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight for the past five weeks or so. I swear it's harder to lose it after this second baby than it was with the first.

I've never tried this video but am so excited that you're trying it out! Inspire me! Let me know how it goes -- especially if you think it's doable. I just can't imagine working out every single day for 30 days. I'm more of a 3-day-a-week kind of gal. But I think I could commit if it really worked.

  16. This is the second time I've started (I didn't do the video while at the beach for a week) and I'm on day 4. My weights are only 2 or 3 lbs, but I really need heavier ones for all but the very last strength set (that side squat arm raise really gets me)! I still do girly push-ups, but I think I could switch over... maybe?!?

  17. I need to do something! But I need to heal up for a few more weeks first. I started this week by working in the garden and walking - pushing my oldest in the stroller and carrying the baby in my Bjorn. I have to get started on losing this baby weight before winter gets here - I'll do things outside until then and will need some kind of workout to do inside then so I'll be interested to see what kind of results you get from this!

  18. Glad you started it! I do the whole DVD (all 3 levels) in one workout b/c I need something that long/intense and I switch it w/ Jackie Warner's workout DVD (which I love too) 3 times a week and then do the Advanced Tae Bo DVD the other 3 days (I rest on Sundays:) as well as run or walk every day...I also would really recommend adding some yoga in there - I start every day with Rodney Yee's AM Yoga and it's wonderful!

I use 5 or 8 pound weights depending on the move, and I do both kinds of pushups as well...

I hope you like it, continue it, and see the results you are wanting!

  19. I use 3 pound weights, it's all I can handle.

    Definitely girl-style push-ups for me!

I'm not really on a "day," because I know it's unrealistic for me to say I'm going to workout every single day. I prefer to do 2 days on and 1 day off. It definitely gets easier as you go along!

  20. I finished this video a long time ago, but i still use it from time to time. It is a really really good video, Jillian Michaels is one of the BEST fitness trainers out there, i love her excersices routines, for beginners, they can be very very hard, but it really pays off, there isn't one muscle in your body that won't be worked out with this video. I currenty use Chalean Xtreme so i don't do these videos as often, but when i did her videos i used to use 5 pound weights, 3 or 5 are a good weight to start for beginners, if you haven't used heavy weights before i wouldn't recommend you use 10 pounds, start with either 3 or 5, you don't want to strain your muscles to the point of injury, what you want to do with this video is lose weight and tone up, which you will achieve by using small weights to do along with the cardio by doing several repetitions to burn more fat. When you lift heavy weights you create more muscle mass, but you also do less repetitions. So don't go too far yet with your weights.

Push ups, i do both, push ups on my toes and girly push ups with my knees bent and on the floor, you also have to start by doing push ups the easiest way which is by doing "girly" style first, what you want is to be able to do as many push ups as you can with a proper posture so that they are effective and actually work the muscle, if you try too hard then your posture gets sloppy and you don't get good results. Try doing one or two push ups on your toes at first, and add one more or two little by little, this will make you stronger and you will be able to do the "regular" ones all the time when your wrists, arms, shoulders, and most importantly, abs get stronger.

Like i said above i already finished this program, and YES it gets easier! by the time you reach your 30 days it will so much easier, i am not going to say that it will be a piece of cake just yet, but it will get much easier. When you are done with this program if you are still planning on keeping on working out, you can either keep using the same video but switching things up a bit so you don't hit plateu, after 30 days it is recommendable that you change things up a bit with your workout routine so that your body doesn't get used to the same routines all the time and make you gain the weight back by hitting plateu, your body needs to keep getting challenged to work different muscles to keep building them to burn fat. And don't worry, you won't ever bulk up by doing weights either, you can only tone up, since women's testosterone levels are way too low for you to bulk up :)

Congratulations on working out, exercising is the best thing that you can do for yourself, as you are taking years off yourself and your body and boosting up your metabolism, it will also make you feel more energetic and in a better mood since exersice makes you produce endorfins.

Good luck! i hope you reach your goals!

  21. I heard about this workout at Mommy in Pink. She managed to do 28 days! You can read her daily posts here: http://www.mommyinpink.com/search?q=30+day+shred
I'm thinking I need to try this too so I can lose the last 10 lbs (I managed to lose 40 of the 50 lbs of baby weight) but I know in my heart that I won't stick to it. I'm just way too lazy! Good luck!

  22. I have started The Shred twice. And quit. Twice. It totally hurts but I hear it gets better. I wouldn't know because, uh, did I mention I quit? Twice? You can totally do it though Steph! Inspire me! Um, gotta get back to my popcicle now...

(Maybe I should start up again and try to do all 30 days. Hmmm. But then I run the risk of maybe being a three-time quitter.)
