Campground Spotlight: Campland on the Bay

Our family recently spent three idyllic nights at Campland on the Bay over fall break.

Campland on the Bay is a huge, family-friendly campground in the Mission Bay area of San Diego.

While Campland is considered an urban campground, you won't feel like you are in the middle of the city. Instead, it will feel more like you're tucked away in a beach paradise while also having fast and easy access to grocery stores, shopping centers, beaches, and amusement parks.

This is truly the kind of campground that makes SUPER FANS - people who return year after year to make new memories with family and friends.

Playground

Campland on the Bay has subtle theming that revolves around the story of The Three Little Pigs. Strangely, the playground for small children is named "Huff and Puff Park." When we first saw it on the map, we avoided it because we mistakenly thought it might be a smoking area (oops!). We later discovered that it is a super fun playground with slides, swings, and small climbing walls. Super fun for ages 2-10!

Swimming Pools & Jacuzzis

There are two swimming pools and two hot tubs at Campland on the Bay. They are regularly maintained and offer an inviting space for splashing or relaxing.

Dining/Food

Campland on the Bay has a Cantina, a Market, and an Ice Cream Shop.

The Cantina has pretty standard fast casual fare, but don't bypass it! The prices are surprisingly affordable and it's delightful to sit outside in the San Diego sunshine while your kids play in the adjacent grassy field. The Campland Cantina serves up breakfast, lunch, appetizers, and dinner - with most menu items in the $9-$13 price range. A children's menu is also available ($5-$7).

Restrooms & Laundry

We did not use the restrooms during our stay, but the laundry rooms were spacious and sparkling clean.

  • Boogie boards, surfboards, buckets, shovels, beach chairs, and other beach gear

* Note that balls are not available for check-out so you will want to bring your own for use on the basketball court, beach, and grassy fields.

TIPS

  • Bring or rent bicycles for your kids and/or yourself. There is a great bike path nearby that takes you right along Mission Beach.
  • The arcade does not accept quarters. Instead, you will need to purchase a rechargeable game card. Most games are $1.00. Players can win prizes from the redemption machines.
  • Off-season is the most cost-effective time to stay, including weekdays after Labor Day until New Years. Off season is also mid-week from January until Spring break. Booking ahead is always a good idea. As the campground fills up, the rates do increase, just like the airlines.
  • October is KIDS FREE SAN DIEGO month so that's a particularly strong option for families since many restaurants and attractions offer BOGO specials.
