Decorate Your Child’s Room {ideas for both the uncommitted and the adventurous}

December 15, 2008 By Stephanie

sugarplumdreamslogo2I’m what you might call an “uncommitted decorator.”

I plan and I dream and I scheme and I draw…and one day I might get around to actually decorating.

I truly admire people who can just stop by a home improvement store “on a whim,” buy a bucket of paint and a cartful of accessories, and turn a white room into a room that looks like it came straight out of a model home catalog (ahem…I’m thinking of Germaine here). Those people are brave, creative souls – and maybe one day I will have that same courage and gusto.

Instead, I tend to fret over the final project. Will the color be too dark/too light? Will that picture really stand out? Should the bookcase be in this corner or right over there?

This timorous decorating “style” explains our white walls and simple decor. It’s not that I don’t have grand dreams. I do. I just need a little nudge to get going.

yhst-34754502057660_2031_33203823I’m proud to say that I took a step in that direction this weekend. My husband and I (okay, mostly my husband…) put up Wall Candy Arts Wall Decals in Dottilicious ($61) from Sugarplum Dreams in our 2-year-old daughter’s room. The kit contains 80 polka dots in various colors and sizes. Essentially, the dots are oversized stickers – just peel and stick! Not happy with the way you placed them? Just peel them off and reposition them. Easy as pie!

And these polka dots are so cheerful, bright, and fun! Now I’m so excited to go out and buy a matching bedding set.

And maybe I’ll even get this cuddly Shaggy Raggy Raspberry Rug ($55).

shaggy raggy raspberry rug

And I’m head-over-heels for this Oopsy Daisy “Alphabet with Kooky Birds” print ($139) for the walls.

alphabet kids art sugarplum dream

There are so many lovely decorating options over at Sugarplum Dreams, “the ultimate baby and children’s boutique.” If you live in Texas, you’re lucky because you can actually go into the shop and browse the selection in-person (Feel free to bring your little ones along…the store is designed with them in mind! They’ll be treated to a balloon and shortbread cookies). If not, no need to worry – you can shop online to your heart’s content.

WIN IT! One winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Sugarplum Dreams. To enter, leave a comment on this post stating what you would buy OR what item(s) catch your eye prior to Tuesday, December 23rd at midnight (don’t forget to follow the rules). * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.

*UPDATE* The winner is #18 Nicole. Congratulations!

I love the growth charts (better than marking on a wall!) and that ladybug napmat is SO adorable-it would be so perfect for her to take to daycare (except she doesn’t sleep much there…but maybe this would encourage her to?) thanks!

I love the “Around the World” mural and the “Chinese Zodiac” mural and wall art. We are in the process of adopting internationally, and either of these would be great in our little one’s room!

I’ve been intending to get decals for my daughters new room. I was going to say that the Dottilicious was my favorite until I saw the Growing Tree Decal. What a fun way to keep track of both my children’s growth.

I love all their cute ideas…especially the chalk board decals. We just “de-babied” the boys’ room :( so no more firetrucks and ducks dressed as firemen (that border was SO cute!) We’re looking for some fun chalk board or bulletin board displays for their walls. Great shop!

I’ve been dying for some wall decals since I can’t paint the rooms here. I looked at the site, and although I like the chalkboard stuff I’m wary to teach my children that it’s okay to write on the walls…so my favorite is Dottilicious, just like you guys have. I want to come over and see it on her walls!

Oooh, I have some wall candy and love it! After 3 years it still sticks to the wall perfectly and can still be moved! If I were to win I would probably buy one of the goodnight moon fairy clocks – how adorable! :)

It might sounds kind of funny…but the activity books sound cool. Especially since there’s 2 feet of snow outside. No big house projects for us right now. Thanks!

I would get the train wall decals. I have been looking for something like this. I was trying to do my boy’s room in trains but find it hard to find train stuff. Usually you find transportation stuff that has cars, boats, plains, etc with it.

As a full-time working mom to an active preschooler, I unabashedly fall into the “uncommitted” category! I’ve got my eye on the Goodnite Moon Princess and Frog Clock (http://www.sugarplumdreams.com/goodnite-moon-princess-and-frog-clock.html) to spruce up her bare white walls in our apartment. Plus, it would be great as she starts learning to tell time! Thanks for sharing this site; what a great find!

Wow, that’s a huge website with a ton of fun stuff! I was looking mainly at baby & room decor, as I also have lagged behind in getting around to decorating. The thing that ended up catching my eye was a really cute bird mobile, as I’ve never had a crib mobile for any of my babies, and I’m sure #3 would love one ;)
