FOR ATHLETES/FITNESS BUFFS: Five Stocking Stuffers Under $30

December 12, 2008 By Stephanie

And now – for the runner/hiker/walker/biker/swimmer/skier on your list…

Don’t just stuff their stockings with cheap chocolates and DVDS this Christmas. Give something healthful (and helpful).

wristrunner nathan sportWrist Runner ($6.95) or Reflective Shoe Pocket ($5.95) from Nathan Sports

Both of these handy little items serve the same purpose. Make it easy for the runner/biker/walker in your life to carry his/her keys, credit card, and a little bit of cash…while still being able to keep his/her hands-free.

steel_flip_straw nathan sportsSteel 700 ml Flip Straw Bottle (~$22.99) from Nathan Sports

Say good-bye to plastic water bottles and say hello to this wide-mouth, BPA-free water bottle – sturdy enough for the serious athlete, stylish enough for the fashion-conscious, and eco-friendly enough for the truly green.

shrinq pocket pedometer sportlineShrinQ Pocket Pedometer ($29.99) from Sportline

Help someone you love get to 10,000 steps a day with the ShrinQ Pocket Pedometer. This handy miniature gadget is designed to fit in any-size pocket and tracks your steps, your distance traveled, and your calories burned.

sport-beansSport Beans by Jelly Belly

Packed with Electrolytes, Carbohydrates, and Vitamins B & C (oh, yeah…and sugar), these high-flavor fruity beans will keep your athlete going as he/she bikes, runs, hikes, or expends energy in some other athletic capacity. Available in four fruity flavors (Berry Blue, Orange, Lemon-Lime, Fruit Punch), the 1 oz. bags retail for about $1 each and are available at a variety of health stores.

sharkies1Sharkies Organic Energy Sports Chews

Another excellent alternative to the typical energy bar! These tasty shark-shaped treats are gelatin-free, fat-free, wheat-free, gluten-free…and are packed with electrolytes. Available in five fruity flavors (Citrus Squeeze, Fruit Splash, Berry Blast, Watermelon Scream, Peach Tree Breeze), these fruit snacks retail for just over $1 per 1.58 ounce pouch. My husband and I both liked the taste of these yummy, gummy, power-packed chews. Such a delicious way to stay energized on a bike or trail!

I’d love for you to share your fitness/health-themed stocking stuffers ideas if you feel so inclined to share…

I have a family of fitness fanatics. We include exercise DVDs, hot hands and feet packets to place in gloves and socks while running, Buffs to keep the head and face covered and protected from wind and cold, also smart wool socks for the runners as well as lights to wear so they are visible at dawn and dusk.

It is time to lose that baby weight that I have been carrying for some time. I try to hit the gym at least 5 – 6 times a week for an hour, which I have thoroughly enjoy doing. It was having the time to eat healthy that was hard for me with the family always on the go. I’ve already noticed a diffrence in my body and strive to stay motivated. Enjoy living a healthy lifestyle…

    Happy Holidays!!

As a kid, my stocking was my favorite part of Christmas morning, and I always enjoyed searching for unique stocking stuffers for my kids, and now have the joy of doing the same for my granddaughters. A tradition I have is to always put a huge orange at the foot of the stocking!

Thank you for the healthy giveaway.

I’ve seen little clip on flashing lights that runners can use if they’re out at night. They’d fit in a stocking. A roll of reflective tape could be used on shoes, belts, or caps to increase visibility at night. Maybe some new shoelaces would be a nice stocking stuffer, too.

My favorite fitness-themed stocking stuffers are warm hats such as the Hind ones, as well as nice running gloves like the Manzella ones, and Wigwam or Thorlos socks. That keeps my athletic family and friends cozy while they are out in the cold for fairly cheap. I also like getting them tasty fitness/healthy munchies. My hubby loves the GU chocolate outrage energy gels, and my mom is a fan of the Luna bars, and I love those new caffeinated Cherry Jelly Belly sport beans.

I have to say I really have no good ideas. Only the littles in this family will have stockings so I haven’t thought much about anything grownup for a stocking! I do really like that Wrist Runner. My husband runs and doesn’t have anywhere to carry ID or anything so sometimes he doesn’t and that makes me nervous. I think I’m going to have to seek one out if I don’t win.

Oh, and I so love those water bottles!

I’d like the flip straw bottle and the pedometer; I’ve been using my big old cup I got at the hospital when I gave birth as my water bottle, and I’ve always wanted a pedometer but never purchased one. It would be nice to upgrade the drinking vessel and see how much I’m movin’ around every day.
