FOR HIM: Home Depot

December 12, 2008 By Stephanie

photo-2Home Depot is one of those shops that appeals to every guy: the handyman, the gardener, the landscaper, the cook, the builder.

When we went shopping there this morning, my husband immediately became distracted by the long aisles of products that seemed to beckon him.

I like the store well enough, I suppose. But it certainly doesn’t make my eyes light up or my toes tingle.

That’s why my husband volunteered to serve as your “personal shopper” this Christmas. Well, sort of. He perused the store/website and came up with some excellent guy-approved picks for your consideration.

Without further adieu, I bring you another edition of gifts guys REALLY want…all items that are under $50.

general tools mini infrared thermometer home depotGeneral Tools Mini Infrared Thermometer ($49.95)

Featuring a “rugged, pocket size design with built-in laser sighting,” this little thermometer will take accurate temps in mere seconds. He’ll be pointing and “shooting” that red laser beam at everything in the house in seconds after pulling it out of the stocking. And I can guarantee he’ll show off this gadget to all of his friends with pride.

zircon stud finder home depotZircon Studsensor Stud Finder With Wirewarning Alert and Spotlite Pointing System ($19.97)

Need to hang a picture up in your house? Take the hassle out of that project with the Zircon Stud Finder. With an easy-to-read display and the ability to find metal studs up to 1 1/2 inches beneath the surface of walls and ceilings, this is a practical (and affordably priced) stocking stuffer that won’t go unused. For example, if I take it and aim it around our house, it lands right on my husband – he’s such a stud (HA!).

xantrex power inverters home depotXantrex Compact Power Inverters ($34.99)

I don’t really know how to explain this succinctly, but my husband assures me that guys want this. “By plugging the Micro Inverter 175 into a vehicle’s lighter socket, users can conveniently recharge and run electronic devices such as cell phones, camcorders, laptop computers, and more.”

home depot gift cardsHome Depot Gift Card (available in denominations between $10-$500)

Let him decide what he wants. But YOU can have fun picking out the gift card. Home Depot has some of the most creative gift cards that I’ve seen out there for Christmas. Choose a card that looks and feels like duct tape, a card that smells like gingerbread and can be decorated with stickers, or a card that looks just like a paint color sample card.

photo-3Home Depot has it all! Well, almost. They really need a comfy seating section with couches, magazines, beverages, and a kids play area…for the moms and kids who venture into the store with their spouses.

Then, little ones won’t end up running “fast” through the aisles or “resting” on aisle shelves. Not that my little beauty would ever do that. I’m just saying…

WIN IT! One winner will receive a $100 gift card to Home Depot! To enter, browse the Home Depot website and leave a comment on this post stating (1) what you would buy with the card, (2) what you like about the website/store, and/OR (3) what you would improve about the website/store…prior to Monday, December 15 at midnight (don’t forget to follow the rules). * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.

FOR AN EXTRA ENTRY: Link to my site! Anywhere! You can add one of my buttons to your blog, add me to your blogroll, add my site to your Facebook page, you choose…Then, come back here and leave a second comment with a link to where you linked to me.

***For a complete listing of all of the reviews and giveaways in my “Super Stocking Stuffers” series, click here.***

*UPDATE* The winner is #177 Dan. Congratulations!

I’d probably be looking at a deadbolt lock like the Schlage Plymouth Double Cylinder Deadbolt. And I heartily second the desire for a waiting area for non-constructionally-inclined-with-small-children spouses. Believe me, they’d get a lot more of our business . . .

I would get my mother in law a new leaf blower, she has a huge pecan tree in her front yard and is all the time trying to sweep up leaves off of her driveway. Everyone always slides on it because the leaves get sooo slick! So for her and our safety, I think a leaf blower would be the best bet!!

I liked that the website was easy to navigate and it had at least some Christmas appeal to it. The prices are a little high but still reasonable.

My favorite thing about the Home Depot website is the comprehensive list of categories across the top, each of which having a drop-down menu of additional sub-categories. This website is easy to search or “browse” for anything you might need!

Oh, and we’d buy paint…lots and lots of paint for a new nursery color, an updated kids’ room color, and we’d finally banish the pink (rose – but it’s pink) from our master bedroom as well!

This is my husband’s favorite store and the one place I can send him to get rid of him for awhile. I would just give the gift card to him and let him have a field day. I like Home Depot because the staff is friendly and helpful.

  25. Steve Higgins says

    December 15, 2008 at 4:37 pm

With the $100 Home Depot Gift Card, I would purchase a new wheelbarrow (Jackson
6 Cu. Ft. Contractor Wheelbarrow) for lawn work. Our garage barely fits our two cars and I do not have a storage shed, so the wheelbarrow spends most of its time in the elements. My current wheelbarrow’s wooden handles have splintered and the plastic tub is cracked, so this new one would make lawn work a little more enjoyable. Home Depot’s website has an easy to use layout with the categories listed across the top – a feature that I like. If they were to improve their site, they might chose slightly larger fonts in their tabbed categories across the top.

    (1) what you would buy with the card,

We would be purchasing a new kitchen faucet. Ours looks horrible and is held together by duck tape (attractive huh!). We have looked and they are not cheap, I would love this one:
    Delta
Uptown Single Handle Chrome Pull-out Kitchen Faucet With Soap Dispenser
    Model 16928-SD
It is regularly $138, on sale for $118 and it has free shipping!!!

    (2) what you like about the website/store, and/OR

Home Depot is one of my favorite stores. I really like their Garden Club, I signed up with them for it well over a year ago and it was inspiring during our last garden, we had the best tomatoes this last year and I do owe some credit to Home Depot for that.

    (3) what you would improve about the website/store

Honestly, nothing. I have never had a bad issue at either the brick store or the website. Happy customer at both of them.

  27. Natalie Hill says

No mater what I ask him to do around the house it always involves at least three trips to Home Depot. I think he jut likes being in their store.

I’d put the hundred dollars towards buying mortar, grout, and tile spacers for our family room tiling project. We bought the tile four years ago, right after we bought the house, and it’s still stacked up in the corner. We had a rough time with the bedroom tiling, and this room is at least twice as big. A gift card would really help us get rolling on this project!

OOH OOH OOH!!! This definitely makes my toes tingle!!! What a great thing this would be, we are doing a massive remodel and we buy materials from Home Depot all the time!! My guess is that we would either buy lumber, or put it towards windows, or a Miter saw (I mentioned needing one in the Lowe’s giveaway, too….we need one!!! LOL!!!). But I also need a new oven, so maybe I could put it towards a GE 30 In. Freestanding Electric Range, found here: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100597008&N=10000003+503399+90401&marketID=90401&locStoreNum=8125
As for what I like about the store? The prices, the selection – we just got one in my area a few months back, and I love it! It is SUCH a help to have one locally.
What would I improve about the store? They move things around a lot, which makes them hard to find. The contractor bags in my store are forever changing places – sometimes they’re in a display by the cash register, sometimes they’re stacked by lumber, and who knows where they will be next time! So there’s my two cents, ha ha!
Thanks so much for the chance! I’d be thrilled to win!!

Home Depot is HUGE in my area. There are 3 within a 10 minute drive of my suburb of Columbus, OH. We love Home Depot’s paint department. Their employees are very friendly and always have the answers to our list of questions. I would use this gift card to put towards new peel and stick tiles for our kitchen. They have this one that we’ve used in both our bathrooms that looks just like real slate but without the hassle and cold feel! The one improvement my husband and I could think of is that it never seems like there are enough checkout lanes open.
Another thing I love about Home Depot is they host a kids workshop once a week/month. They give your kid one of their aprons and write their name on it and let them do some kind of tool craft. So cute!

You are just overflowing with great giveaways girl!

Okay, on to my entry…if I were to win a $100 Home Depot gift card I’d use it towards the purchase of a new sink. It’s a long story but suffice it to say we need one in our kitchen.

I like that Home Depot is one stop home improvement shopping. When I go there to peruse the herbs in the garden section I can also pick up chlorine for the spa and rock salt for the water softener. I’m all about convenience!

What would I improve? I think they need better coverage as far as employees in their departments. Often times my husband and I have questions but we can’t find a store associate to help. And when we do find a store associate he/she is usually already helping someone else.

Thanks for offering these great gift idea giveaways Stephanie!

How awesome would that be. I already carry a book with me where ever we go…I’d throw in some knitting and be a happy girl. No more having to sit on a shelf in a quite part of the store. You wouldn’t believe how many times I get asked if everything is okay. LOL They probably think I’m nuts!

I also appreciate that they do a free Kid’s build-it activity on the first Saturday of every month, and my boys have really enjoyed that when we’ve gone. I love Home Depot – I find all kinds of unexpected things there – like the $60 butcher block cutting board I bought on clearance for $15 for my sister’s Christmas present this year! I also like to wander around the lighting, kitchen and floor coverings sections and dream about improvements I’d like to make to our house!

Another GREAT giveaway. If I was fortunate enough to win, I would buy myself birdfeeders and birdseed, a new snow shovel for my husband, a few gallons of paint to paint my daughter’s bedroom, and whatever was left over I’d buy some new knobs for my bathroom vanity. I LOVE Home Depot. I have always gotten exactly what I need there, everything’s in stock!

We moved into a new house about 6 months ago. When we first moved in, I joked that we should buy stock in Home Depot because we were there about 3-4 times a week for the first few weeks! Now that we all the little things are working, we are focusing on bigger things like replacing window coverings! I know my husband would be willing to apply it to new blinds for our living room windows! Great giveaway – thanks for offering!

Home Depot is one of those stores that I love to shop in. There is just an endless amount of possibility in that store. I’d give the gift card to my father for Christmas but if I was to say what my favorite thing is it would be a panini grill.

Oh my gosh, what project do I start with from our TO DO list??????!!!! I can spend $100 at Home Depot in 3 minutes flat!!! I do use their website when when need to compare prices. Most of the time, I just go to the store instead of shopping online.

I can’t ever find anything I am searching for on Lowe’s website but I always can on Home Depot’s … so compared to the comp – their website rocks.

We would absolutely buy some landscaping items–flowers, mulch, more mulch & maybe some big pots for flowers. Our yard is just on the bottom of our budget at this time. What I like about Home Depot’s site is the listing of the workshops they offer! Sometimes the individual stores just don’t know what’s going on. LoL.

We would buy a dehumidifier for our basement. I love the “Online Deals” section of their website! Thanks for the chance to enter.

Okay, the commenter above me stole my idea. :) We moved to SE Texas last year, and we don’t have any ceiling fans in our house! I would like to save on our A/C bill next year, so yeah, we’d buy a ceiling fan, too. :)

This probably sounds boring but we’d likely put it towards the purchase of a ceiling fan for our living room. Ours is old and tacky ;)

I wanted to make a toy box for the little guy and this card would come in handy. I wish HD would have calendars of their how-to classes online because there have been a lot of projects that appealed to me yet I missed.

I’d probably buy paint and painting supplies to repaint my bathroom, but I’m eyeing the popup greenhouses on their website. Their website is pretty easy to navigate which is nice.
