FOR THE PC MOM: Seagate Replica

April 27, 2009 By Stephanie

seagate_replica_laptop_hrPC – as in a non-Mac-owning mom.

Although politically correct moms might like this gift too…

Moving on.

ATTN: PC moms!

If you’re not worried about backing up your computer…you should be.

Especially if you store your “memories” (aka: pictures, movies, slideshows, etc.) or your “talents” (aka: that draft of your children’s book, the first chapter of your novel, your birth story, etc.) there.

For many moms, though, I know that the term “back-up” is downright frightening. It sounds exceedingly complex. Just hearing the term makes you want to ask your husband or your nearest tech-savvy buddy to come read this post.

But wait! Seagate just introduced a product TODAY that is designed with you in mind.

seagate_replica_rightdocked_hrThe Seagate Replica is “an easy-to-use back up appliance that allows consumers to effortlessly execute a complete PC backup (including pictures, music, movies, operating system, programs and settings) – not just individual files and folders.”

Essentially, you just plug in Replica ONCE, hit “ok” on the initial install (never again thereafter) and forget about it!

Check out this description from Seagate: “Unlike other complex blackup methods, Replica completely eliminates the need to manually learn, manage, and dedicate time to the backup process…Gone are the days of burning stacks of discs or saving only a few files on flash drives. With Replica, consumers have the comfort of knowing that they are prepared in the event of a data disaster – even a PC crash...”

There are two versions of the product available for purchase:

The multi-PC version of Seagate Replica includes a dock and is available for homes with two or more PCs (Suggested Retail Price: $199.99). The single-PC version is recommended for use with individual laptop or desktop computers (Suggested Retail Price: $129.99).

The Replica will be available in May exclusively through QVC. Additional online and retail outlets will be added thereafter and interested parties can check Seagate.com/Replica for more details.

YOUR TURN: Do you own a PC or a Mac? I’m a Mac Girl myself, but “to each his own…”

WIN IT! There will be two winners. Each winner will receive the Single-PC version of the Seagate Replica ($129.99). To enter, leave any topic-related comment on this post prior to Tuesday, May 5 at midnight (Don’t forget to follow the rules…all generic comments like “Enter me!,” “Love it,” and “Cool stuff!” will be disqualified.).

*UPDATE* The winners are #90 Ali and #184 Randy Bailey. Congratulations!

I really need to back my files up and this actually looks like something even I can use!!! I am NOT a computer genius and to set most things up they use technical terms. Screech… I immediately have to stop because I have no idea what they want me to do. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway!

I use a PC. Why? Let’s just say that I learned my lesson with 8-track players and um…. whatever the format of tapes was that was NOT VHS. From now on, I stick to the popular stuff.

I back up all my music, pictures, mail, and embroidery designs to a hard drive right before each time my mother comes to visit. I’m terrified that one of these times she’s waving her mouse around without paying attention, she’s going to wipe something out on my computer.

Finally, something that even computer novices can use to backup all their important stuff without having to ‘find’ it all first! I have clients that would benefit greatly from a device like this. As to the PC/Mac questions, my opinion is that Macs are made for people that want to merely use a computer for what a company tells them to do with it. PC people want to actually control their computer to do what they want to do… mac’s are different enough to be annoying, but not different enough to be relavent. imho.

I am actually using my 3 year old iMac which I had to have semi-rebuilt last summer. I love it and the inverter and logic board went on it and rather than part with it, I chose to have it fixed. My husband has a Dell laptop which he swears by ~ yes, the battles of the apple vs pc does exist in our home, giggle! Right now we really need to do some major backing up of our files, which we are so behind in doing. That’s why when I saw this giveaway of yours I had to enter, it would give us the motivation we need to just do it! Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter.

I have a Seagate back-up drive, so if I’m the lucky winner, I’ll give it to my mom. She can play Freecell and post to her favorite forums, and that’s about it. She doesn’t even really know how to save things onto her computer, but I do, so there’s a lot of photos on her hard drive – family, pets, her garden, her crafts. She lost everything once, but she still doesn’t know how to back up. I’d feel a lot better knowing her irreplaceable photos are safe!

Our family is going through the effects of not backing up a PC right now. The pc in question luckily is one of many that we have, but what a pain, everything wiped out, including all of the drivers.

You don’t know the meaning of fun until you’ve tried to get this computer back up and working with a screen and font that’s huge because it doesn’t have the proper display driver. I’ve never had to scroll so much in my life.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I have macs, pcs and linux boxes ( irun a small consulting firm from my home). Though an incident this weekend reminds me how import backups are. My sister’s laptop was stolen and she had to handle the loss of all her data (it was unencrypted besides) reminds me that today the hardware loss is cheap compared to the value of the data.

I have a PC and it’s a little… sketchy. It always starts up just fine, but sometimes it seems to do its own thing, so I do worry that someday it is just going to not turn on. If that happened and I lost all the pictures of my two daughters, I would be devastated so I would love a reliable way to back them up. Thanks!

Just a click of the mouse is all it takes to back up a PC to the Seagate Replica, a new external model from the hard drive maker. Seagate thus joins a number of other companies in trying to radically simplify back ups. They’re trying to stir us from our dangerous lethargy of computing without a safety net.

Just plug the Replica into the USB port on a PC and it automatically loads its own software. The ever-cautious Seagate requires you to click once on a license agreement, and then the software quietly does its thing in the background. It backs up the PC’s main hard drive, and updates the backup as files change.

I really need one of these!

Even with the huge jump in storage available by going from CDRom to DVD (from 650 Megabytes or so, to 4.something Gigabytes or so), the typical size of system hard drives has gotten bigger faster… We’re now talking 25 or 30 DVDs to fully backup my desktop system, JUST the files, not the registry or operating system in any recoverable form, JUST the files… And any kind of ongoing backup (just tracking stuff that has changed) is still a nightmare.

This gizmo would be greatly appreciated, thank!

  107. Deborah says

    May 3, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Ya know, it’s about time that back up solutions became simplified and automated. This sounds like just the ticket for those of us who never think of backing up sensitive or irreplaceable files until the unthinkable happens. I’ve learned my lesson the hard way with losing data in the past because of hardware failures, but that still doesn’t mean I actually back up on a frequent basis. It’s just not something you think of every day (or even every week or month). So having this chore automated for me would be a blessing!!

  175. Mandy Latran says

    April 29, 2009 at 10:44 am

I noticed the review on the Seagate Replica and wanted to point out something VERY important that was not mentioned. The Seagate Replica does a full image scan. This may sound like a great feature, but what needs to be highlighted here is that it is EXTREMELY difficult to restore your data back onto your computer. With an image backup – you must restore back to your original PC with identical specs. What if your computer got stolen or completely broke – then what? You cant access any of the data you saved. Additionally, when you do a full image restore, you must boot from a CD into a linux kernal. Do you even know how to do that? I sure dont. This is not an easy solution so please do not be fooled.

Anyway, I like the idea of this gizmo. My husband got himself (note: HIMSELF) a backup external hard drive and it is still in the box. I would love to try this backup device as it would help me protect all of those personal photos and files and show my husband that I was able to accomplish what he hasn’t! Hah!

I have tried a few different back up routes. I have a jump drive I put my pictures on, they are all digital. I have also tried to burn CD’s of the pictures, they take up a lot of space. Before I had children, my computer died, I had a lot of documents and pictures that were lost. They were un-recoveralbe. I really think this would take the head-ache out of backing up all those important documents!

I am very lucky. When my hard drive had problems last year, the computer shop I brought it to was able to make an exact copy of the drive, so I didn’t lose anything. I don’t do back-ups often enough. The Seagate Replica sounds like it would make backing up a lot easier.

I own a pc, I have used macs though when I took video editing, they were cool but I would need more time with one to decide if I wanted to actually buy one. As for the Replica, wow, it sounds awesome! I hadn’t heard about Seagate before your last review and give away of the Go drives and desktop terabyte, but I am not all into the hard drive world of computers. I love their Go drive, with the Seagate manager you can set it up to back up certain files every night at a certain time or customize it to once a week or something, it is much simpler than how I used to back things up, hence the reason I almost lost all my pictures before. I hardly ever used to back up anything, now that I have my Go drive I am backing up stuff all the time. Plus we just bought a Seagate terabyte from Wal Mart, ran around $190-something but it is worth it. Next I want to buy a dock for my Go drive. Another good thing about Seagate is their great customer service and public relations, it is worth shopping their site just for that. Right now they are offering a free dock and free shipping with the purchace of a FreeAgent Go drive on their website. Thanks for the great giveaway!

Unfortunately, all the software I need to use in my practice is not Mac-compliant. My laptop is multi-purpose for practice records, photo-editing and blogging. However, one day, I WILL own a Mac, and it will be a most lovely day.

My external HD is HUGE in size compared to my husband’s tiny little credit card sized one (but it’s his and he rarely let’s me play with it…LOL)….but we backed up my important stuff on both just to be safe; I am so paranoid. This product looks at least half the size of my current one and WAY easier to operate! I’d love to win one and that’s a fact.

As someone who has ‘lost everything’ in past computer crashes, drive failures, etc., I try to back up as much as possible, but it’s such a pain! It always seems I’m guilty of ‘I’ll do it tomorrow…’ syndrome. I need an easy-to-use back-up method because, believe me…, computers tend to crash without warning. ‘Tomorrow’ is always too late but I still procrastinate… I definitely need the pc version of this…
