When I say "Alabama," I say it all drawn out and southern style, with a hint of country music in my voice. Like this. "Allllaaa...BAMA." It's a fun word to say. Try it.
At Tim's request, we toured the USS Alabama. I surprised myself by having a lot of fun - walking from deck-to-deck, climbing LOTS of steps. We saw the captain's quarters, the church, the dental office, the kitchen, and a spooky prison. Let it be known forever and always that I would not want to live on a ship like that - gave me the creeps.
Afterward, we played at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. It was full of hands-on exhibits and HUGE insect displays ("the Big Bugs," as our girls referred to them).
My favorite part was the My BodyWorks section though. I'm kind of a closet doctor at heart. I used to think I wanted to be one as a kid and I'd set up a doctor's office in the bathroom, making toilet paper casts for my siblings.
At the end of the day, I asked our 4-year-old what her favorite part of the day was and she answered without hesitation, "the SHIP!"
Have you ever been to Mobile? What did you like/not like about it?
Would you ever want to live on a ship? How are your "sea legs"?
Special thanks to the Mobile Bay Convention & Visitor's Bureau for providing us with a passport for area attractions.
I can resonate with your oldest's favorite thing for the day :) My dad was in the Navy, and I dearly loved to go visit him on his ships. For a while he was the XO on a destroyer that looked (at least in my memory) a lot like the battleship that you visited. My sea legs were not the best though.. I can remember losing my lunch (and my strawberry ice cream cone I had just scarfed down :P) in one of the hallways on that ship :P
The My BodyWorks section looks awesome! Never been to Aaaallllllaaaa baaaaaammmmma.
I haven't been since I was a kid. I don't remember much, but it looks like fun!
We just got back from Allllaaaabama! We were in Huntsville for a family wedding (my husband grew up in Huntsville). I love spring in the South!
I always think of Forrest Gump when someone says "Alabama."
I don't think I could live on any ship but a luxury cruise ship!
PS - The picture of your 4 year old is super-cute. I had to look at it twice to see how you did that.
pretty amazing. Where are you guys going next? If you are travelling through Georgia, come by, stop for dinner!
Where are you in Georgia? That's where we're headed next!
If you are coming through Atlanta - we are close by - we are about 40 minutes north of Atlanta - in Suwanee/Cumming/Alpharetta area.
If you are travelling along the coast, we would be pretty far away :(
Looks like you guys enjoyed your time in Alabama. I love that along with your travels and tourist trips you are finding fun parks to enjoy along the way as well.
oh you think a ship is scary... my dad took us down to Groton, CT to tour the submarine he LIVED in for 3 months at a time when he was in the navy. Are you KIDDING? I would go bonkers cooped up in that thing. It is soooo claustrophobic! (and you'd be UNDERWATER! ahh!). But I don't think I'd mind living on a BIG big ship for a little while...
You're right - a submarine would be worse. I think I might go crazy down there.
And I'd be sick-sick-sick either way. I have terrible sea legs.
