How We Keep House :: Bon Home Heat & Dry Dish Rack

March 7, 2011 By Stephanie

How We Keep House :: Bon Home Heat & Dry Dish Rack 1Do you have a dishwasher? We did when we lived in our house (it was a nice one too), but now that we are living in an RV for a year…we don’t.

We wash all of our dishes by hand and it’s really not half-bad, especially since we have a Bon Home Heat & Dry Dish Rack ($99.95). It’s absolutely perfect for our family of four. We wash the dishes, put them in the very well-designed rack, hit a button, and the dishes are dry ten minutes later. It’s a thousand times better than using a dish towel (and more sanitary too).

We showed it to our neighbors when we stayed at Jellystone Park Hill Country and they were awed by it. In fact, one of them ended up ordering one within 10 minutes of seeing it. She later wrote to us and said, “I wanted you to know I got my dish dryer today! I’m very excited and it fits right where I want it to be. If you hadn’t invited us to see the inside of your trailer, I’d have never seen yours!”

Do you have a dishwasher? If not, do you wish you did? Why or why not?

When we bought this old place, it came with a dishwasher. We were excited: It was the first time either of us had ever lived anywhere that had a dishwasher! But alas, it was nothing more than a big clunky useless (or worse) piece of plastic and metal that actually managed to making washing dishes even more of a pain that it already is:

First there is the “pre-wash/rinse” you have to do before you even put the dishes in. Then there’s all the noise and lack of hot water and water pressure while this socalled “dishwasher” not only does not really get dishes clean – just the opposite – it BAKES the dirt on to the dishes!

I’d never heard of the Bon Home Heat & Dry Dish Rack – but now I REALLY want one ASAP!

We haven’t been using it to wash dishes for the past 4 or 5 years though because its one of those portable ones on wheels and it turns out to be a very handy work space in the kitchen. I live in a really old house without a dishwasher, but I don’t really mind that we don’t have one. When I watch people who do have one it seems like they pretty much have to clean their dishes first anyway before they can put them in the dishwasher. If they don’t, they don’t seem to turn out clean. Cleaning by hand gives you control over making sure your dishes are spotless.

What an amazing product – I had heard these were out there but was not sure how they worked out. VERY cool! We do a mix of dishwasher and hand washing. Generally all the little stuff, plates, cups, silverware goes into the dishwasher and the big stuff gets washed by hand. this way, I feel like we’re really filling up the dishwasher to capacity before running it instead of having just a few pots and pans in there. :)

We do have a dishwasher. It’s a mini one that I so appreciate having as it does save time on washing by hand. For the times that we can’t fit it all in though, this is a wonderful idea. It almost seems too good to be true so thanks for sharing that it does work. I may look into this for when we camp.

  135. Mamatini says

    March 7, 2011 at 11:54 am

Hmm, you lost me on this one, Stephanie. It seems rather expensive for having only two functions: drying dishes and storing dishes until they are dry. It is very bulky; I didn’t see that it was collapsible. I’d think when RVing space would be precious. And finally, I don’t really see how it is more sanitary than using a clean dish towel. The dishes are clean when they are being dried.

But then, I was ‘trained’ (seriously!) to wash and dry dishes by my German grandmother, who, before she got married was the chef/head of the kitchen of a large manor home. And this is what she taught me. 1) Use *very* hot water. The hot water will dry off the dish almost before the person drying the dish can get to it. 2) Wash dishes in the following sequence: glasses, then silverware, then dishes, then pots/pans. 3) Use designated dish towels. She always had a towel for glassware, a towel for silverware and dishes, and a towel for pots and pans.

I kind of like washing dishes, especially when I have a dish-dryer to keep me company. Sometimes it is one of my daughters, sometimes it is my husband. Either way it is a wonderful time for conversation!

So, you don’t need to include my name in the giveaway. Clearly, the dishrack has appeal to others! I do enjoy the peeks into your RV life. Thanks for that.

    • Stephanie says

      March 26, 2011 at 1:58 pm

You clearly know a thing or two about dishwashing! I, on the other hand, am a pitiful dishwasher. Tim is much more efficient than I am. ;)

The rack is wonderful for us because it saves time. Our kitchen is very small and only accommodates 1 person at a time so we like to clean as quickly as possible. The rack helps us keep our dishes all in one spot and it dries them in just a couple of minutes (without having to use any towels at all).

It might not be ideal for everyone, but we really like it for RV living.

  138. Debbie C. says

    March 7, 2011 at 11:36 am

We have a dish washer, but it’s old and we usually only use it as an extra dish rack after we hand wash our dishes. Plus, it takes a long time to fill it up with dirty dishes and when the water drains out it goes on the tile and is causing the grout to fall apart. The Heat & Dry Dish Rack looks like something I could really use!

Cool, you are so right when it comes to dryer racks, they are not all the same. We have a dishwasher, but we do a lot of extra washing. i am tired of getting water on the counter-tops. We do have a dishwasher but it’s not very good (it’s old and we have very hard water which I’m sure doesn’t help.) We’re renters so I can’t just go out and buy a better one. Regardless, I do hand wash certain items like my antique colored pyrex mixing bowls that were my grandmothers or large pots and pans that take up a lot of space in the dishwasher or are just an unusual shape. I set these on a towel on the bartop above my sink and let them air/drip dry.

I have what I like to call my “One Day” house. As in one day I’ll have a house with a really good dishwasher or One day I’ll have a house with space for a garden. It makes the wants right now but not possibles easier to deal with knowing that “one day” I can have them.

My brother and I were roommates in one half of a VERY OLD duplex for our last three years of college. It was awesome not having roommate issues by the way as our very seldom issues were sibling issues – much easier. One of those issues, however, was dish washing as we didn’t have a dishwasher. Sadly, sometimes the dishes would be stacked in the sink. Yeah, I know – pathetic since there were only two of us. But this baby would have been so nice! After those three years, I swore I’d never live in an apt. w/o a dishwasher, and I haven’t. I am now on my second DW in my house – hard water just kills them! But, I still hand wash lots of things. I’m almost as weird with my dishes as I am with my laundry. I never put pots, pans, bake ware, non stainless steel stuff, my pretty Franciscan dishes, or tupperware in there. Yep, it all gets hand washed. I’ve been criticized for not washing pots and pans in there, but DW’s are just too hard on them. Old habits are hard to break, but I am all about preservation so I don’t have to shop for new stuff. I hate shopping!
