Two years ago, I wrote a READY FOR SUMMER GUIDE with all of the fun products my kids were loving for the long and warm days of summer (popsicle makers, pool inflatables, and water shoes!).
This year, I thought it would be fun to share some of the products that my almost-teenage-daughter and I have been loving. Although the first official day of summer was just two weeks ago, it feels like summer has been here for some time since our family lives in Arizona. School has been out for over a month and we are starting to sink into a new rhythm.
As I inch into my late 30s (I am 37), I care more and more about protecting my skin from the sun. I'm beginning to understand that 1999 song I listened to in high school, "...but trust me on the sunscreen."
Last summer, I asked one of my friends with flawless skin for her best skincare advice. She replied, "sunscreen." My friend is an MD and vividly remembers making the rounds during a dermatology residency and seeing horrific skin issues that resulted from too much sun exposure. Her sunscreen of choice? La Roche-Posay's Anthelios Sunscreen Milk SPF 60. I've been trying it and it's smooth (not oily) - with a much higher SPF than the norm.
I am always delighted when I discover a company that creates stylish clothing options with great skin coverage. I want to look sophisticated (not frumpy) as I cover up more intentionally. These days I prefer long-sleeve light layers rather than tops that leave my shoulders and chest exposed - especially since we have a whopping 260+ days of sunshine in the city where I live.
Coolibar offers sun protective clothing for the whole family - rash guards, swim shorts and skirts, cover-ups,swim leggings, and so many fabulous hats! I'll be sharing some of my favorite kid picks from Coolibar in a future post.
I've been using burlybands for a year and a half - and they are the best hair tie I have found! If you have thick, curly, and/or long hair, these hair ties will wow you. They are soft, but they also keep your hair firmly in place in a bun or ponytail. I love that they don't break or get tangled in my hair.
SOMA is synonymous with SOFT. Have you touched the dresses, tees, and pajamas by this brand? The perfect material for comfort! I've been living in and loving this turquoise paisley set. There is a built-in sleep bra, which offers support without being tight or constricting.
The daytime temperatures are climbing into the high 90s and low 100s where I live, but it's been surprisingly lovely to run in the early mornings with my neighbor (who is also a good friend). We head out our doors sometime between 5:50-6:30am and catch up as we jog a 3-mile loop. My last two pairs of running shoes have been by Salomon and I can attest to their quality, workmanship, and comfort. I especially love the no-tie technology and the great support - not to mention the vibrant colors and cool designs.
Summer calls for lighter lip color and I recently discovered Vapour Beauty's Elixir Lip Gloss. My almost-13-year-old daughter promptly swooped them off my bathroom counter and has been loving the hint of color and the moisturizing gloss. As for me, I'm a new fan of Vapour Beauty's mini bronzer. It's a great color for my skin tone and is the perfect size to take traveling.
If you love the outdoors, you probably know the Patagonia brand. Patagonia consistently puts out adorable and comfortable clothing pieces for men + women. You'll also want to know that Patagonia is committed to creating sustainable clothing from hemp and recycled nylon. They pay a premium for Fair Trade certified items so that workers are paid a fair wage in a healthy and safe environment.
90's girls - celebrate! Scrunchies are back in style! I love the simple, sophisticated, and gorgeous styles by Slip. Slip's hair accessories are shiny, soft, and durable - with just the right amount of stretch for comfortability, while also staying in place. In fact, they actually don't "slip" from your head. The caramel gold is my favorite color.
What products are you and/or your teenage daughters loving this summer?
* We received some of the above items for review and others we bought ourselves. As always, if you have any specific questions about the products (sizing, durability, etc), I'm happy to answer them!
